How to test an HTTP 301 redirect?

How can one easily test HTTP return codes, like, say, a 301 redirect? For example, if I want to "see what's going on", I can use telnet to do something like this: ... $ telnet nytimes.com 80 Trying 199.239.136.200... Connected to nytimes.com. Escape character is '^]'. I know that I can enter the name of the URL in a browser and "see" that I'm redirected, but I'd like to know what tool(s) can be used to actually really "see" the 301 redirect. Btw, I did test with a telnet, but when I enter www.example.org, which I redirected to example.org (without the www), all I can see is an "200 OK", I don't get to see the 301.

I have the following console application written in VB.NET: Sub Main() Dim ie As Object = CreateObject("InternetExplorer.Application") ie.Visible = True ie.Navigate2("http://localhost:4631/Default.aspx") End Sub This program uses the InternetExplorer.Application automation object to launch an IE window and navigate a given url. The problem that I encountered is that even if I launch multiple instances of my application, the IE windows that are created with this method all share the same cookie container. Is there any parameter I could use specifying that a different cookie container is created for every window? Why won't .attr('checked','checked') set?

I have the following snippet of code (I'm using jQuery 1.4.2): $.post('/Ads/GetAdStatsRow/', { 'ad_id': id }, function(result) { $('#edit_ads_form tbody').prepend(result); $(result).find('td.select-ad input').attr('checked','checked').click(); }); Assume that the post works correctly and returns a correct pre-built <tr> with some <td>s. Here's the weirdness: the $(result).find() line finds the correct input (which is a checkbox, as it's the only input in the cell) and runs the chained click() function correctly, but it REFUSES to set the box as checked, which I need to happen. Here's a crazy twist, too... when I get super specific and change the $(result).find() line to this (the id of the checkbox): $('#ad_' + id).click(); It checks the box, but doesn't run the click() function! If I set it to $('#ad_' + id).attr('checked','checked').click(); it runs the click function as though the box were checked, but the box remains unchecked, and if I do $('#ad_' + id).click().attr('checked','checked'); it does nothing at all. What in the world could be the matter with this? I'm running out of hair.... Thanks!

window.onload seems to trigger before the DOM is loaded (JavaScript)

I am having trouble with the window.onload and document.onload events. Everything I read tells me these will not trigger until the DOM is fully loaded with all its resources, it seems like this isn't happening for me: I tried the following simple page in Chrome 4.1.249.1036 (41514) and IE 8.0.7600.16385 with the same result: both displayed the message "It failed!", indicating that myParagraph is not loaded (and so the DOM seems incomplete). <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.1//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml11/DTD/xhtml11.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en"> <head> <script type="text/javascript"> window.onload = doThis(); // document.onload gives the same result function doThis() { if (document.getElementById("myParagraph")) { alert("It worked!"); } else { alert("It failed!"); } } </script> </head> <body> <p id="myParagraph">Nothing is here.</p> </body> </html> I am using more complex scripts than this, in an external .js file, but this illustrates the problem. I can get it working by having window.onload set a timer for half a second to run doThis(), but this seems like an inelegant solution, and doesn't answer the question of why window.onload doesn't seem to do what everyone says it does. Another solution would be to set a timer that will check if the DOM is loaded, and if not it will just call itself half a second later (so it will keep checking until the DOM is loaded), but this seems overly complex to me. Is there a more appropriate event to use?

Rails, RSpec and Webrat: Expected output matches rendered output but still getting error in view spe

Hello all, I've just gotten started using BDD with RSpec/Cucumber/Webrat and Rails and I've run into some frustration trying to get my view spec to pass. First of all, I am running Ruby 1.9.1p129 with Rails 2.3.2, RSpec and RSpec-Rails 1.2.6, Cucumber 0.3.11, and Webrat 0.4.4. Xunit: Perform all 'Assert'ions in one test method?

Is it possible to tell xUnit.net to perform all e.g. Assert.True() in one test method? Although I have seen dozens of forum questions relating to "Could not load type", none of the advice in them seemed to apply to my situation. I wrote a new web application using aspx.net VB 2005. It is tiny, with just 2 pages, 1 of which has no code-behind. How to get Firebug to tell me what error jquery's .load() is returning?

I'm trying to find out what data/error jquery's .load() method is returning in the following code (the #content element is blank so I assume there is some kind of error). Where do I find in Firebug what content or error .load() is returning? In Firefox 2, usage of overflow:hidden makes other divs overlap current div

Hi, When I use overflow:hidden for div which is positioned absolute (for menu), other div overlaps. Here is the code. It works fine in FF3. Any help appreciated. Please note that html should be as it is. Also if you can provide solution, just by changing styles of menu div (the div which contains menu text) it is more helpful for me. embedded php in html to include header (top part of page) into the page

Hi there, I'm trying to put the top of my page (which is all html) in a seperate file so I only need to change things once like the menu bar etc. So I googled some and found a solution on this website as well, but it doesn't work and I don't know why. So I have a page like article.html and on the top I have this: <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd"> <html lang="en"> <head> <?php include("/pages/header.php"); ?>  In the header.php I have the html that should be on the top of each page and it starts with: <?php /** * @author name * website header */ ?>  So what's wrong with this. When I open the page article.html and right click on it to view the source, I can see the php from above calling the header.php file. Thanks!

Stop IE users typing into the file upload input

My testers have discovered that if you type free text into a file upload input then none of the buttons on the page work until that text is removed (so the page cannot be submitted). It seems that this is only possible in IE - Firefox and Chrome natively prevent text from being entered into upload input fields. I've seen solutions elsewhere which suggest hiding input and replacing it with a label / button combo, but this seems like it might cause more problems and work inconsistently across browsers. Any thoughts?

.NET regex: Match.nextMatch() never returns

I have a regex that seems to have worked fine for the past year or so, and all of a sudden today with a new slightly different text to match against, Match.nextMatch() never returns. I'm no regex expert and I'm sure the regex can be optimized, but previous data sets weren't much more complex than what I've tried today. Furthermore, the regex works fine against the offending data set in a tool like RegexBuddy; it's only in .net (running in debug in Visual Studio) that it seems to hang. Nevertheless, if anyone can figure out how to tweak the regex to make it work, I'd really appreciate it. This is the regex: <tr>(<td[^>]*><a[^>]*>(?<callOptionTicker>[A-Z]{1,5}\d{6}C\d{8})</a></td>)(<td[^>]*>.*?</td>){6}(<td[^>]*><b><a[^>]*>(?<strikePrice>\d*\.\d*)</a></b></td>)(<td[^>]*><a[^>]*>(?<putOptionTicker>[A-Z]{1,5}\d{6}P\d{8})</a></td>) It's meant to extract put and call option tickers from a Yahoo option chain page (i.e., raw HTML). How do I cancel the link action?

I though returning false would be enough to cancel the link action, but apparently it isn't. When I click the link in the code below I do get the 'click' message, which is expected. Magento - Show Custom Attributes in Grouped Product table.

I need to find a way to show the value of a custom attribute in place of the "Product Name" shown in the image below. I'm working with /app/design/frontend/default/defaultx/template/catalog/product/view/type/grouped.php The code below doesn't work(the custom attribute is yearmade): <?php if (count($_associatedProducts)): ?> <?php foreach ($_associatedProducts as $_item): ?> <tr> <td><?php echo $this->htmlEscape($_item->getYearmade()) ?></td> Any help would be appreciated. EDIT: So the answer turned out to be quite simple. You see what I failed to mention above was that there was indeed output... but that it was just a number (eg: 52). Turns out this was the ID for that custom attribute value (It was a Dropdown type of custom attribute). So in summary This works for custom attributes of type text: echo $this->htmlEscape($_item->getYearmade()) But for all other types of custom attribute (I think), the following should be used: echo $this->htmlEscape($_item->getAttributeText('yearmade')) I would not have discovered this without the most excellent answer provided by Alan Storm, below. Thank you sir.
