• "cannot receive new filesystem stream: invalid backup stream" error when unpacking flash archive on solaris 10

  I've searched around but i'm having no luck with some peculiar behavior with a flash archive. I'm using HP Server Automation 9.14 to deploy the OS. I'm creating a Solaris 10 flash archive to create a snapshot default build in our environment. I create the flash archive with # flar create -c -S -n g8-solaris10-u10 g8-solaris10-u10.flar It seems to create the file without any problems (exit status 0). When deploying to a new system (same hardware), it extracts to a point and then bails. The last error in the log I can see is Extracted 2047.00 MB ( 82% of 2488.98 MB archive) ERROR: Could not read file (172.27.118.100:/media/opsware/sunos/flar/g8-solaris10-u10.flar ERROR: Errors occurred during the extraction of flash archive. The file /tmp/flash_errors contains the list of errors encountered ERROR: Could not extract Flash archive ERROR: Flash installation failed The error log contained the following message cannot receive new filesystem stream: invalid backup stream A previous version of this flash archive (1.8gb) worked ok, so I suspect size may be a factor. The source system (the one the flash archive is an image of) is an HP BL460C GEN8 some more info below. • Opening and Testing Ports on Modem > Router Connection

  Working off of my last question, I can access my server's FTP over the LAN but not over the internet. I'm using Filezilla on port 666. My router/modem configuration is as such (similar to other post): 1) Modem connects to WAN 2) WAN port on modem connects to LAN port on Router 3) Modem internal IP address is 192.168.0.254 4) Router internal IP address is 192.168.0.1 5) Modem has DHCP turned OFF 6) Router has DHCP turned ON 7) Router is running Tomato firmware and it's set as 'Router' (not 'Gateway') 8) The internet is working (just had to say that) I've set up port forwarding both on the modem and router - both route port 666 to the IP address of 192.168.0.3 (TCP); that is the IP address of the server which has FileZilla running. I don't know if that's hindering anything but I've also tried it with just the modem and just the router...same result. I've also tried setting the server to be DMZ (both on router and modem). Neither router nor modem have anything in their logs about denying inbound traffic on port 666 so my ability to troubleshoot stops there. I've tried contacting my ISP (Telus, running on mobility plan...it's a "Smart" Hub) but they weren't much help. They said they only block port 25 and 80 and maybe a few others, but not most ports. I test whether or not the port is open by going to canyouseeme.org - I don't know whether or not that would produce a 'connection refused' result just based on the fact that the FTP requires a login...I'm not well versed on this matter. FWIW, sometimes I get a 'connection refused' error on canyouseeme.org but mostly it's 'connection timed out'. I don't know what else to do at this point.

  I often use openssl s_client to test and debug SSL connections (to LDAPS or HTTPS services). It allows me to isolate the problem down to SSL, without anything getting in the way. I know about klist that allows me to purge the ticket cache. Is there tool that would allow me to ask a Kerberos ticket for a given server, not event sending it ? Just enough to see the whole Kerberos exchange in Wireshark for example ?

• Hardware issue: UI freezes and hard drive light goes solid several times per hour

  I have a workstation that has been acting up for the last few weeks. It currently has Windows Server 2008 R2 installed on it, and 2 HDD mirrored. A few times per hour the screen will freeze up, applications will say "not responding", sometimes the screen will turn a lighter shaded color--at the same time the HDD light is on solid. This lasts anywhere from 10 to about 50 seconds. Could this be something with one of the drives or the mechanism keeping the mirror in place? Any other ideas?

• Installing/Uninstalling Windows 8 UI Apps in Windows 8 for all users

  I'm using Windows 8 Pro 64 bit quite a while now. My account is the only Administrator account on the PC. There are 2 other standard (and local) accounts. I've noticed that if I install an app from Windows Store, that app is only available from my start screen. Also when I uninstall an app that's common for all users (e.g., Finance), it only uninstalled from my account. I want to install app and want it to be available for all users. When I'll uninstall an app, it should be removed for all users. No other user should have access to it. Just like installing/uninstalling programs on previous versions of Windows. How can I do that?

• ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386 does not work with HTTP preseed?

  Installation media: ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso I tried a lot of different boot parameters, but either the installer ignored the preseed configuration, or it boot itself directly as LiveCD. An example of the boot parameters I've tried: auto url=http://mydomain.com/path/preseed.cfg boot=casper only-ubiquity initrd=/casper/initrd.lz quiet splash -- If I remove only-ubiquity, it boots as a LiveCD. If I remove boot=casper, it won't boot. If I add vga=normal locale=en_US console-setup/layoutcode=us console-setup/ask_detect=false interface=auto, it still can't do automatic install. If I remove auto, it's the same. What is the correct boot parameters for launching such an installation? From the apache log of the server hosting preseed.cfg, I see that the installer has no problems fetching the preseed file. My preseed file is almost identical to the one at https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/installation-guide/example-preseed.txt. Moreover, I have run debconf-set-selections -c preseed.cfg to ensure that the preseed file is correct.

• Stress test speed on a gateway?

  I'm interested in stress testing my gateway server but am lost on how. Most of the stress testing applications I've seen only see how much load an app like Apache can handle, but not this. Essentially I want to send as many packets I can into this box with one computer on one card and see how many come out the other in another computer just to get an idea of what kind of load this can handle. I'm also interested how Snort will perform. I'm not really sure how to do this though. What tools could you recommend that could do this?

  Does anyone know a good GUI alternative for file copying on a Windows 2008 Server 64 bit edition. The built-in GUI has a hopeless interface and is bug-riddled which really hinders the ability to get things done safely. For example, often when moving a directory with subfolders, the directory and its subfolders will still remain, empty and not deleted. I've been through many of the common file copier and Windows Explorer alternatives, but either they flat-out do not work on a 64 bit/W2k8 machine or they do not actually fully replace the file copier.

  I'm trying to test Tomcat virtual hosts on my dev machine (windows 7/Tomcat 6). I'd like to have requests for localhost, test1.localhost and test2.localhost all route through to the same tomcat instance. I've edited my hosts file to look as follows: 127.0.0.1 localhost ::1 localhost 127.0.0.1 test1.localhost 127.0.0.1 test2.localhost And added modified the Engine in server.xml as follows: <Engine defaultHost="localhost" name="Catalina"> <Realm className="org.apache.catalina.realm.UserDatabaseRealm" resourceName="UserDatabase" /> <Host appBase="webapps" autoDeploy="true" name="localhost" unpackWARs="true" xmlNamespaceAware="false" xmlValidation="false"> <Alias>test1.localhost</Alias> <Alias>test2.localhost</Alias> </Host> </Engine> However, I'm getting a 404 when hitting test1.localhost:8080/myWebApp, although localhost:8080/myWebApp works fine. I can ping test1.localhost fine. What have I missed?

• Testing domains on intranet/local network?

  This may sound like a very silly question, but how could I setup domains ( eg www.foo.com ) on my local network? I know that all a domain is, is just a name registered to a name server and that nameserver has a zone record, and in the zone record there are several records of which the A Record is the most important in dictating where the lookup goes to, which machine it should point to. I basically want to make it so that I can refer to my other computer/webserver as 'www.foo.com' and make my local sites accessible by that, mess with virtualhost records in Apache and zone records for the domain except locally so I can explore and fiddle around and learn instead of having to rely on the domains I own on a public registrar that I could only access through the internet. Once again I apologize if this is a silly question, or if I'm completely thinking backwards. Background information: My OS is Debian, I'm a novice at Linux. I've done very small edits in zone records on a Bind9 Server but that's the extent of my networking experience.

• WMIC returns error when querying product

  I'm trying to automate the installation of an MSI on my server, however before the installation can go ahead I need to uninstall the previous version from the server. Searching on the internet I've found that WMIC is the tool required but there seems to be a problem with the setup of WMI on the server.   I'm trying to build a shell script to automate the installation of several packages onto an Ubuntu 10.04 server, and I'm having problems with proftpd-basic. I'm using the command line apt-get -qy install proftpd-basic >/tmp/install.log For most packages, this approach would work fine, however proftpd-basic appears to require some interaction (it asks whether to perform an inetd or standalone installation). Is it possible for me to pre-select this option on the command line somehow, as I don't want the user to be bothered by this question? - For info, if it matters, I want to choose the 'standalone' option.

• Autoinstall of Microsoft Security Essentials give random error message

  I'm using wpkg to auto install Microsoft security essentials on WinXP. At the first login after the installer finishes I get an error message as msseces.exe starts. After a reboot the message goes away. The error message indicates a random access restriction. "An error has occured in the program. Try to open it again. If this problem continues, you'll need to reinstall Microsoft Security Essentials from the Microsoft Download Center. Error code: 0x80070005" Firstly: Does anyone know why I get this error message? Second: How do I debug this kind of problems? The event log doesn't seem to contain anything useful. Is there a tool to detect and list denied system calls?

  I've used SimpleOCR, which has a nice GUI for correcting errors. Unfortunately it makes a lot of errors! (and suffers other bugs and limitations) Is there a free OCR program for Windows which has such a GUI and a low error rate? I want it to show the original (bitmap) word while I'm editing the OCRed word similar to what SimpleOCR does: Free is good. Open-source is better.

One of the problems with MSMQ is that it's not installed by default on most Windows desktops, and that it doesn't seem to be available as a redistributable for inclusion in our MSI. Given that the administrator will have access to Microsoft SMS or ConfigMgr or similar, how do I persuade them that it's easy to install? That is: how do I automate installation of the MSMQ components?

  I'm writing an application for storing lots of images (size <5MB) on an ext3 filesystem, this is what I have for now. After some searching here on serverfault I have decided for a structure of directories like this: 000/000/000000001.jpg ... 236/519/236519107.jpg This structure will allow me to save up to 1'000'000'000 images as I'll store a max of 1'000 images in each leaf. I've created it, from a theoretical point of view seems ok to me (though I've no experience on this), but I want to find out what will happen when there will be directories full of files in there. A question about creating this structure: is it better to create it all in one go (takes approx 50 minutes on my pc) or should I create directories as they are needed? From a developer point of view I think the first option is better (no extra waiting time for the user), but from a sysadmin point of view, is this ok? I've thought I could do as if the filesystem is already under the running application, I'll make a script that will save images as fast as it can, monitoring things as follows: how much time does it take for an image to be saved when there is no or little space used? how does this change when the space starts to be used up? how much time does it take for an image to be read from a random leaf? Does this change a lot when there are lots of files? Does launching this command sync; echo 3 | sudo tee /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches has any sense at all? Is this the only thing I have to do to have a clean start if I want to start over again with my tests? Do you have any suggestions or corrections?

  I have created a platform that i want users to sign up and a new site is created for them instantly. Users will register and afterwards they will receive a username and password for their personal site. The system will work like ecommerce platforms such as www.shopify.com, www.bigcommerce.com, etc.. where users sign up and a new web-shop is created for them instantly. I have been searching for a while how i can create a script to automate this task but couldn't find any tutorials. Am using LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySql and PHP). Am asking if someone can guide me how to write such script or maybe point me to a tutorial or a book or probably similar scripts to automate this task.   Where is the bare cygwin package list located and how do I manipulate it programmatically or from a shell or with a different method than the gui? I know the gui (setup.exe), and I'd love to go one or more levels deeper. I can retrieve a list of selected/installed packages ( http://serverfault.com/questions/83456/cygwin-package-management ), but how do I write it back or to a different machine? What I have in mind is when I install a new windows I would like to start with my package list in text form, an apply or inject it somehow to the new system. Where is it? In the registry? In a binary file? in a local database? Or has anybody done this, is there a tool, a tutorial? The essence of what I want is to manipulate the selected package list with something else than the gui. It is ok for me to use the gui for the setup process. So I could imagein manipulating the package List and then run setup.exe and just click through it. Note: I do not want to manipulate the list of already installed packages but of packages that "should be installed". But if htis is not possible, maybe there is some workaround. E.g add an outdated version as installed and the installer will then install the new version.

• Recursively resize images from one directory tree to another?

  I have a large complex directory tree full of JPG images. I would like to create a second directory tree that exactly mirrors the first, but resizing all the images down to a set size (say 2000x1500 or something) and quality (perhaps 85%). Is there any tool that would allow me to easily do this on Windows? I could write some scripts to automate it with bash and image magick, but first want to see if it's already been done. Faster is better too, as I have thousands of images. So something like Photoshop is probably not a good solution as it might take a couple of seconds per image.

I haven't received any errors from my machine, and don't see anything related to the Firewire port in the logs. • Unable to force Debian to do unattended install... libc6 wants interactive confirm

  I'm trying to create a script that forces a Debian Lenny install to install the latest version of CRAN R. During the install it appears libc6 is upgraded and the install wants interactive confirm that it's OK to restart three services (mysql, exim4, cron). This process HAS to be unattended as it runs on Amazon's Elastic Map Reduce (EMR) machines. But I'm running out of options. Here's a few things I've tried: This previous question appears to be exactly what I'm looking for. So is there a way to make libc6 just restart these services with no user input? Or is there a way to stop cron so it does not cause an interactive prompt? Maybe a creative option I've never thought of? Keep in mind that this system is brought up, some Hadoop code is run, and then it's torn down. So I can put up with side effects and bad behavior that we might not want in a production desktop machine or web server.
