• dnsmasq not running

  i installed ubuntu 12.04 on a netbook with 16GB SSD. To keep the installation small i used the mini.iso i got from here. Everything worked fine, but i noticed that dnsmasq does not get started by NetworkManager. On a different machine i installed 12.04 from a regular iso and netstat shows dnsmasq running and listening on port 53. NetworkManager.conf look identically on both systems. The line dns=dnsmasq is present. Although i do not really need dnsmasq - name resolution works fine without - i would like to know the reason why dnsmasq is running on one system, but does not run on the other and how i could adjust this behavior. • Getting front audio jacks to work

  I run Ubuntu 10.10 on my Intel D945. My front audio ports don't work in Ubuntu, the rear one does. I never got it working earlier when I had Ubuntu 10.04 but this time I am going to try it again. My codec is SigmaTel STAC9227 My ALSA information is here. How can I proceed from here?

• How to adjust DPI in 14.04

  I asked about fixing DPI in 12.04. The 14.04 release notes list "Support for High-DPI screens and desktop scaling." Post upgrade, it seems that nothing has changed. Similar symptoms from my previous post persist: The 1" square here is closer to 1/2" Despite the line xserver-command=X -dpi 170 in /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf, xdpyinfo reports 96x96 dpi I did find that I was able to use the "Scale for menu and title bars" slider in System SettingsDisplays to fix title bar text size instead of setting org.gnome.desktop.interface text-scaling-factor as described here. The last post also mentions that in Gnome 3, DPI is hard coded to 96. Is this a limitation in 14.04? (I am somewhat ignorant to the distinction between Gnome and Unity) Can I do anything to properly set my DPI?

• Why is Lubuntu default desktop environment

  So I just wanted to try things out on 14.04, so I did sudo apt-get install lxde sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop When I get to the greeter, it reads Lubuntu (Default) Lubuntu Netbook LXDE Openbox Ubuntu Why is Lubuntu default? I don't know if its because its the last thing I installed or if its because it is in alphabetical order. I'm tempted to test this theory by installing Xubuntu and see if it becomes default. I'd like it to read Ubuntu (Default) and have the Ubuntu splash instead. When I open lightdm.conf, there is no line "user-session" nor "greeter-session". They are missing. Is this normal and I have to add it manually?

• OwnCloud RSA certificate configured for SERVER- ISSUE, webpage has a redirect loop

  I had Owncloud running on a server that had died, I remember installing being easy, I have migrated server and Owncloud is one of the last apps to install. Ok Just downloaded and installed the newest version of Owncloud on a Ubuntu 14.04 server with PHP 5.5.9-1, I am trying the manual install. I have tried adding repo and installing from apt-get install owncloud, did not work for me :/, whereis owncloud reported nothing. It's installed but never was able to bring up site. Now for my issue I finished the manual install from .tar.bz2 when it came time to login I receive "This webpage has a redirect loop" , I receive the error from Chrome and Safari web browsers. I can't login at all, with no user, I get the error page. Don't know if it is related or not but here's a look at the owncloud-error.log "RSA certificate configured for "mysite.com" Does NOT include an ID which matches the server name" Installed new ssl cert with CN as my ServerName directive in the vhost config file, same error :/ Re-installed owncloud same issue... • Nginx rewrite for link shortener + Wordpress pretty URLs

  Okay so I installed Nginx/PHP/MySQL/Wordpress via a online walk through, and it had me enter these rewrites to enable Wordpress pretty URLs: if (-f $request_filename) { break; } if (-d $request_filename) { break; } rewrite ^(.+)$ /index.php?q=$1 last; error_page 404 = //index.php?q=$uri; This is then included in the vhost for my domain. What I'm trying to do now is add some redirection/link shortner rewrites that will play nice with the setup I have in mind. I'd like to redirect "x.com/y" to "x.com/script.php?id=y" for all external links that I post. The Wordpress link setup right now has almost all internal links begin with "news" (x.com/news/post-blah, x.com/news/category/1, etc) BUT I also have a few root links that point to some internal content (x.com/news, x.com/start). I'm guessing that's going to cause some conflicts. What's the best approach to do this? I've never worked with Nginx (or any rewrite rules) but maybe I can distinguish between "x.com/news" and "x.com/news/" to allow it to play nice? I had a friend setup a working version of this in Apache and it'd be nice if I could get this up on Nginx again.

• How do I set up XDMCP access via GDM?

  I am a newbie to ubuntu linux, and want to setup xdmcp access, so i can access it from my windows box using xming. part of it is learning exercise also, since i know i could use vnc to directly connect to ubuntu. I modified the gdm's custom.conf file like this [xdmcp] Enable=true but when i launch xlaunch, i see a blank screen, further diagnosing with wireshark, i got that the udp port 177 on the linux box is unreachable so i disabled the firewall on linux box, but still same result. I checked with nmap and there is no service listening on UDP 177 port, the gdnsetup on natty is quite different from the older version, where setting up xdmcp was in UI

• Apache2: Limit simultaneous requests & throttle bandwidth per IP/client?

  I want to limit simultaneous requests & throttle bandwidth per IP/Client on a single apache vhost. In other words, I want to ensure that this site, which hosts large media files, doesn't get hammered by someone trying to download everything all at once (just happened the other night). I'd like to limit the outgoing transfer speed overall for this site, as well as limit the number of connections a single IP can make to the server to a sane default (i.e. within normal browser limits for multiple requests so page loads aren't effected too much). Bonus points if I can actually scope it to file types (i.e. leave web files alone, but apply these rules to just the media files). We're running Ubuntu 9.04 on all the servers, and have two apache/php servers being load balanced via Round Robin by a squid proxy server. MySQL is running on its own box as well. We've got plenty of bandwidth to give them, so I don't really want overall caps, but just want to throttle the amount of memory/CPU it takes to serve this site. There other sites on these servers that we don't want to apply these rules too, just want to keep this one from hogging all the resources. Let me know if you need more info!   This really doesn't make sense. I've been using many other distros and never had such difficulty managing autostart services. I found three ways of disabling autostart services, and none of them works for me: update-rc.d -f service_name remove chkconfig --level 12345 service_name off sysv-rc-conf I tried all the three ways to disable mysql daemon, mongo daemon, redis server, cups daemon, yet all of the utilities confirmed that the daemons are disabled, yet they still automatically start on boot. Please suggest the most correct way to disable services from auto-start at boot. Thank you! btw, it's running 12.04

• dhcpd fails to start

  I recently installed Ubuntu 11.10 I then used apt-get to grab isc-dhcp3. I removed Network-Manager and manually configured my network interface eth0. In addition, I hand edited a dhcpd.conf file and designated eth0 as the listen port in /etc/default/isc-dhcp-server. However, each time I attempt to start dhcpd it fails. When I view the syslog file, the last line is as follows: "Not configured to listen on any interfaces!" My eth0 interface works fine. I can ping addresses inside and outside the network and perform DNS queries. Any help would be greatly appreciated. AJ

• Sharing samba-folder with root access

  Hi everyone, I have a staging server in my network running Ubuntu server 10.10, being my main development area. As I need to access the files in the Apache root from other computers in the network, I have setup samba with the following settings: [www] comment = Apache root www path = /var/www writable = yes force user = root force group = root On the host computer, running Ubuntu 10.10 desktop, I am trying to mount the drive with a bash file looking like below: #!/bin/bash sudo mount -t cifs //192.168.1.5/www /media/www/ -o username=myusername,password=mypassword,rw,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 What happens is that I get mount error(13): Permission denied Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs) thrown in my face whilst trying to execute the mount. I've done exactly the same, with exactly the same smb.conf & mount-bash file on another computer in my network, but this just wont work. What am I doing wrong? I am running out of ideas.

• Need to adjust touchpad edge scroll area

  I have an Acer Aspire that I have dual booting XP and Ubuntu. On the Windows side, the driver allows you to set how close your finger has to be to the edge of the touchpad before it goes into scroll mode. In Ubuntu I don't have the option (at least in the GUI) to change the scroll area on the pad. Is there a conf file or other way to change this? I'm constantly getting into the scroll area during normal usage. I would like to leave it on without losing so much pad area to the scroll feature. Thanks a lot.

• Debian 6: setting up FTP just for website editing

  I have a VPS using Debian 6.0. Currently, SSH is set to not accept password logins, and only key-based ones. A person who needs to work on one particular website (a vhost) wishes to use FTP. He doesn't need/want SSH. How can I set up FTP access for him, enabling him to have write permissions for all files in the relevant directory, and only the relevant directory? The directory is /srv/www/domainname.com/public_html Currently, all directories and files in that directory belong to www-data:www-data and are 644/755. I've installed vsftpd and have been reading some guides, but they all seem to deal with allowing multiple users to have their own user-named directories which isn't what I'm after. I can't seem to work out how to simply define one FTP user with a password that has access to one directory of my choosing. This is my first experience of setting up an FTP server. Thanks. Edit: have also found this - maybe I should be using ProFTPd, or can vsftpd also do what I want?

• How do I get Catalyst 11.10 with ATI Radeon Mobility HD 5470 working on an HP DV7?

  I have a HP DV7 with a HD 5470 512M card. Installation of the Catalyst 11.10 is repeatedly failing on a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.10. Catalyst 11.8 proprietary drivers were working well with Ubuntu 11.04. I have tried installing directly from the .run and generating the distribution specific packages. Nothing has worked. After installation which goes through successfully, the system hangs on reboot after the flashing dots. I have to replace the /etc/X11/xorg.conf to get the X working. I have followed instructions as per the http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Main_Page wiki. Request for support to ATI/AMD gives the response that this model is unsupported on Linux by HP :). Updated 14-Nov I have reverted back to the open source drivers which work well enough for me.

• Programmaticaly change lightdm autologin session type

  I have problem with lightdm setting autologin session type (using my config tool). Lightdm logs into previously selected session. I see that autologin-session is UNIMPLEMENTED in version 1.2.1. Maybe I can somehow cheat lightdm? but it seems program writes actual state when stopping and overwrites my changes to /home/user/.dmrc and /var/cache/lightdm/user.dmrc. At the current I have two sessions: default and kiosk. in /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf I have line: user-session=desktop but after I logged into kiosk session it starts all the time. Changing .dmrc and /var/cache/lightdm/dmrc/user.dmrc doesn't work.

• Numlock doesn't work after logging in

  I've a strange problem after upgrading to Ubuntu 11.10 The Numlock of my Apple Keyboard (white, wired) doesn't work anymore. Strange thing because it works with the guest account but not with my user account. I did change the lightdm.conf to get the numlock working for the login and it works, but nor in my user account. Even stranger, pushing zero effects a right click? I also tried different keyboard layouts, but it shows Numlock on (stuck on) but doesn't work. Any idea which config file stores information about this?

• How to install Edubuntu on a system with low memory (256 Mb)?

  I'm preparing an old system with 256 Mb RAM to send it to some children. It doesn't have Ethernet controller and there are no Internet access at the destination. I've chosen Edubuntu for obvious reasons and modified it with UCK trying to minimize memory usage just to install, let alone using it yet. But Ubiquity won't start even in openbox (edited /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf) because there are no space left on /cow right after booting. I've already deleted things like ibus, zeitgeist, update-manager (no network access after all), twisted-core, plymouth logos. I'm thinking about creating a swap partition on HDD, can it be later added to expand this /cow ? Is there a package for the text-mode installation which is used on Alternate CDs? I don't want to re-create Edubuntu from an Alternate CD. This behavior is reproducible in VM limited to 256Mb RAM.

• Zoneminder user control reset

  i have ubuntu 12.04 and i think i was an idiot and set all the restrictions to view" in the "users" tab on ZoneManager not "edit" as it should be. Now i cant do anything in the options, ive tried to find the conf file to edit to no avail. Uninstalled Zoneminder, apache and SQLite and reinstalled, but it just reverts all the settings back to the "view" setting. Ive googled all day tried to edit the sql files with sql browser, and it tells me its not a valid sql file.. many thanks in advance for any help. Ben

The problem is, local traffic can browse fine but remote traffic is directed to the root folder and getting 403d (because I have that folder blocked off through my .htaccess file). If I append /public to the URL it works fine.

  How does one configure the Radeon Open Source drivers? I have just installed Ubuntu 12.10 and want to try the Open Source drivers instead of the proprietary AMD binaries. After the installation, the driver seems to be installed, I have wobbly windows working (can't use a PC without wobbly windows!), and life is generally good. I have a problem when I connect a secondary monitor. Performance is killed (everything becomes laggy and jerky) and my laptop sits on the right-hand side of the monitor, not the left. I'd like to know how to turn off the Laptop's monitor so I'm just using the external monitor. How can I do this using the Open Source Radeon drivers? I can't find a GUI management tool, and there's no longer an xorg.conf. What to do?
