  • How to stop Windows Server Standard from booting me while remoted in?

    I'm using Remote Desktop connection to connect to a Windows Server box, on which I am an admit. If I'm idle for a few minutes, it locks me out (killing file transfers, which is a problem), and a few minutes after that, it severs my connection. Where can I find the settings that govern these things to stop that from happening? I want it to let me stay connected, regardless if I'm idle.

  • What's wrong with my grub configuration?

    I have one hard drive with 2 partitions. I had Windows XP and Windows Seven installed. I've deleted Seven partition and installed Ubuntu 11.10 on it. But when I turn on the computer and the grub menu appears on the screen, I can only see my ubuntu installations and a windows 7 loader. I've already got installed windows XP on another partition, but it doesn't boot. If I want to use Ubuntu alongside Windows XP, ¿how can I fix the problem?

    Consider one feed like this: http://feeds.feedburner.com/codinghorror It has the entire content inside the description tag of the feed, so you don't need to access the website to read the post. Now I have the problem of creating an interface for a feed like this on a desktop client. What's the best way to render the text in a pleasant way to the user? My first thought was to parse the entire HTML as if I was a web browser, but that looks really hard to do in a satisfying way. Are there any better (faster) alternatives? Rephrasing: how a desktop rss client such as feeddamon parses the input to display it nicely? Does it have a web browser inside it?

  • Why screen freezes in Windows 7 and Vista?

    On Windows 7 and Vista I use auto-hide task bar and turn off graphic card after 1-2 minutes. When I want to use my desktop again screen freezes sometimes for 10 seconds. What I do does not effect anything immediately but cursor moves. For example if I click Firefox bookmark it opens when screen unfreezes. This happens at any of my computers and about a month after new installation. I don't think that problem is related with the drivers.

    I have two Mac notebooks at home, I have assigned them static private IPs. I have also set my router to a DynDNS address, which updates everytime my router gets a new public IP. I have enabled Screen Sharing on both notebooks. I can successfully goto my router webpage using the DynDNS address. I understand I need to port-forward to get Screen Sharing to work from outside. Lets assume, notebooks have private IP 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.3 I am kind of lost here, would appreciate some help (I need to be able remote desktop to both notebooks)

  • Lightest Linux Desktop supporting Firefox/graphic browser

    I am on Windows and I have a remote server with Ubuntu 10.10. I want to use Firefox or other graphic browser on that remote server. The problem is, the server's memory is only 512MB, so I can install larger desktop environment. I used to use XFCE and NoMachine NX, but they consume too much memory on that Ubuntu server. The only thing I want to use is a graphic browser (for example firefox) on that server. Nothing else. Do you have any good suggestions? Thanks a lot!

    I currently have Windows 8 32-bit installed from MSDN (I didn't realise at the time that my processor supports 64-bit). I understand that you can't upgrade within Windows 32-bit to 64-bit directly from the ISO. I have burned the ISO to a DVD, and have attempted booting from this drive. The problem I am encountering: The operating system couldn't be loaded because a required file is missing or contains errors. File: CI.dll Error code: 0xc0000221 You'll need to use the recovery tools on your installation media. If you don't have any installation media (like a disc or USB device), contact your system administrator or PC manufacturer. Additional info: Computer: HP Pavillion m9280.uk-a Processor: AMD Phenom 9600 Quad-Core RAM: 3 1GB sticks Thanks in advance!

    I want to make a thick-client, desktop, open source twitter client. I happen to be using .NET as my language and Twitterizer as my OAuth/Twitter wrapper, and my app will likely be released as open source. To get an OAuth token, four pieces of information are required: Access Token (twitter user name) Access Secret (twitter password) Consumer Key Consumer Secret The second two pieces of information are not to be shared, like a PGP private key. However, due to the way the OAuth authorization flow is designed, these need to be on the native app. Even if the application was not open source, and the consumer key/secret were encrypted, a reasonably skilled user could gain access to the consumer key/secret pair. So my question is, how do I get around this problem? What is the proper strategy for a desktop Twitter client to protect its consumer key and secret?

    I have a quick question regarding Microsoft Remote Desktop Services in a virtualized environment using VMWare. This environment will actually be hosted in a large data center with in a cloud that is offered. This particular data center has the ability to establish high speed point to point connections with customers via metro-ethernet who are hosted in the cloud. The result is that customers can actually host their corporate domain in the data center's cloud. Put the merits of such a configuration aside for the time being. Believe me when I say that the cloud is stable and had enough hardware behind it to rival a dedicated cabinet. My question has to do with RDS in a virtual environment, which would amount to virtual desktops hosted on a virtual server. I've read that this works without issue using Hyper-V and VMWare. But before I take the plunge I wanted to get some feedback from the community.

  • How to stop jucheck from running? Java won't remember "Check for Updates Automatically" setting.

    I've installed Java on Windows Vista, and every day I get a Vista security warning asking me if I want to run "jucheck". Apparently this is the Java automatic updater. Well, I don't want it to run on its own, ever. I cancel it, and quit it. I right-click on the taskbar and unclick "Check for Updates Automatically", and then click "Never Check", and "Apply". And yet, it never remembers this setting. If I come back to the "Java Control Panel" right after clicking "OK", the very same box is checked again, all on its own. Is there some way to kill jucheck once and for all? If I simply delete jucheck.exe, will Java (other than the automatic check) still work, and will manual updates still work, and will it stop even trying to update every morning?

    Using Windows Server 2012 Remote Desktop Services, I have a 'Personal Virtual Desktop Collection' with automatic user assignment enabled. According to Microsoft "Personal virtual desktops are permanently assigned to a user account and the user logs on to the same virtual desktop each time." Is there a way either through the Server Manager UI or PowerShell to determine which user has been assigned to which VM? The only way I have found so far is to query the 'Remote Desktop Users' group on each VM in the collection, however that requires each VM to be powered on. There must be a better way.

    I'm looking for advice on how to enable our team to take down and re-start our company systems for maintainance purposes. The scenario includes several Oracle db machines several MS SQL Server machines with multiple instances windows services (IIS etc.) BizTalk EAI solution Apache and Tomcat instances lots of scheduled tasks on win2003 and win2008 machines (physical and virtual). The main focus is on capture all dependencies between said databases and services and tasks connecting to them. At the moment an enterprise class solution is not an option. We are considering developing a solution driven by PowerShell scripts but I hope for some more suggestions.

I have a lot of respect for the People who visit this SITE and help others ! Just To clarify : Just to go by SF rules - I am not seeking someone to Design this solution, I am simply seeking real world examples, experiences, technical expert opinions / suggestions, any tips or tricks they may have or any problems they may have faced while doing something similar above with these products. I am also not asking for Capacity Planning for Storage, We have done some research and I am seeking Expert Assurance / Suggestions. We (our company) are planning to deploy Symantec Endpoint Protection and Symantec Desktop Recovery 2011 Desktop Edition to our 3000 - 4000 workstations (Windows7 32 and 64) with a few 100s with Windows XP 32/64 Bit. I have read the implementation guide for SEP and have read tech-notes for Desktop Recovery 2011. Our team have planned to deploy this as follows : 1 x dedicated SQL 2008R2 for Symantec Endpoint Protection (Instead of using the Embedded Database) 1 x Dedicated SQL 2008R2 for Symantec Desktop Recovery 2011 (Instead of using the Embedded Database) 1 x Dedicated W2K8 R2 Box for the SEPM (Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager - Mgmt. APP) 1 x Dedicated W2K8 R2 Box for the Symantec Desktop Recovery 2011 Management Application Agent Deployment : As per Symantec Documentation for both of the above, an agent can be pushed via the Mgmt. Application (provided no firewalls are blocking ports required etc. - we have Windows firewall disabled already). Server Hardware : Per SQL Server : 16GB RAM + SAS DISKS + Dual XEON, RAID-10 for the SQL DB or I can always mount a LUN from our existing Hitachi or EMC SAN. SEPM Server : 16GB RAM + SAS DISKS + DUAL XEON System Recovery MGMT SERVER : 16GB RAM + SAS DISKS + DUAL XEON Above is the initial plan we have for 3000 - 4000 client workstation (Windows) Now my Questions :-) a) If we had these users distributed amongst two sites with AD DC / GC in each site, How would I restrict SEPM and Desktop Mgmt. solution to only check for users in their respective site ? b) At present all users are under one building but we are going to move some dept. to a new location (with dedicated connectivity), How would we control which SEPM / MGMT Server is responsible for which site ? c) We have netbackup in our environment backing up other servers, I am planning to protect these 4 (2 x SQL, 1 x SEPM, 1 x System Recovery Mgmt. Server) via netbackup or I can use System recovery 2011 server edition on all 4 of these boxes as well. (License is not an issue as we have the complete symantec portfolio included in our license). d) Now - Saving Desktop backups - What strategies have you implemented ? Any best practice recommendation for a large user base ? I was thinking to either mount a LUN from our Hitachi SAN on the Symantec Recovery Server itself or backup to the users hard drive locally and then copy it over to a network location ? Suggestions welcome :-) If you have anything to add / correct - that will be really helpful before diving into the actual implementation phase.   • Can I change the system's "Browse for Folder" dialog globally?

    As far as I know, everyone hates the "Browse for Folder" dialog: This dialog is always too small, rarely remembers locations well, and worst of all: forces you to navigate your entire computer using a tedious tree structure. Now, to be fair, some of the problems are likely to do with how apps are invoking the control -- not setting a size or a default directory, etc. But the problem about the tedious tree control remains. Is there any way to customize your Windows installation to use a different control? Preferably an app/installer that does it for you safely, but dropping in a compatible DLL or similar technique would be okay too. Or are we stuck with this terrible control forever?

I would like to record some tasks in a program (i want to make a video where i will be explaining how to use a particular program) and i haven't found a good software to do it yet... I have just tested camStudio but when i hit the Record Button the computer starts working very slowly (even when recording in a small area... so i wouldn't imagine how slow it will run if recording full screen).   • windows server secondary plex or windows server default

    I am new to handling issues on server. when my system tried to reboot I could see two installables to boot from. windows server 2012- current os windows server secondary plex. So when ever there is a system restart the system it stops at this screen. And since I am connecting to this server using RDP I have to wait for the hetzner console to click on of the os to boot. Even though the current os is set as default and time given is 30 sec, it still waits for a user input. So I want to know which of the two should I be using to boot and I just want one os.

  • Microsoft Keyboard(8000) play button opens Windows Media Player rather than Zune on Windows 7

    Im currently using the Microsoft 8000 keyboard on Windows 7 and before installing Microsoft's Keyboard application, it was opening Zune and playing music with the play button. After installation, it is now opening Windows Media Player rather than Zune. If I have Zune open and press play, it will open WMP and upon pressing it again, will kick off the play command in Zune. I've checked the default programs in the control panel and have set Zune as default for all available but that hasn't changed anything. Has anyone run into this before? I'm a bit stumped as googling does not produce any relevant results. Thanks!

  • Firewall GPO not applying despite being enumerated by gpresult

    I have a need to open up the admin$ share on all of my domain's client PC's and I am trying to do so using group policy. I defined computer policy for Windows Firewall with Advanced Security in a policy object linked to the appropriate container and added the appropriate rules. However, they are not being applied! I feel like I have tried all of the obvious steps: I've checked gpresult and the resulting set of policy is the way that I would expect it to look. I've gpupdate /force and gpupdate /sync on a few client computers, but no matter what I do they don't seem to respond to my changes. I know that other computer policies in the GPO are being applied so it is strange that these are not. I have also disabled exceptions on clients in the firewall GPO, but that doesn't seem to be applying either. Here is a screenshot of the firewall.cpl from a client: Basically, although other options in the same GPO ARE applied for computer policy, the firewall settings seem to be ignored.

  • Belkin Wireless G router not working on Windows 7

    I have a Belkin F5D7230-4 Wireless G router which used to work on XP. I have a clean Windows 7 install (on the same desktop PC), and it just won't work. Device Manager lists the adapter as a USB device, but it says "The drivers for this device are not installed", even though the driver installer said the installation was OK. Manage Wiresless Networks says "wireless is not currently enabled". The WLAN AutoConfig service is running. My specific question is which of the two symptoms above should I go for first? Should I try to fix the driver installation somehow, or should I try to enable wireless? Is one caused by the other, or is this two independent problems? Any other thoughs that could help me are also appreciated.

    I want to mount iso files without root permission by fuseiso, and this is how to mount a iso file: fuseiso -p '/path/to/isofilename' '/media/isofilename' , so I make a .desktop file followed Freedesktop Standard (The Exec key) as bellow: #!/usr/bin/env xdg-open [Desktop Entry] Name=Mount ISO image Name[zh_TW]=??????? Exec=fuseiso -p %U "/media/$(basename %U)" Terminal=false MimeType=application/x-cd-image , but it failed. I think it failed because of $(basename %U), if it is changed to a fixed string, the iso file can be mounted. How can I solve this problem?

    I have another question posted in regards to the practicality of whitelisting. In this question I'm simply looking for an frequently updated list of top known used Desktop web browsers to use as part of my whitelist. I'm not trying to target any specific OS so please show one, show all. The list of browsers for desktops isn't exploding, but it does grow. I've only recently been made aware of other browsers that have multiple rendering engines. I'm not always on top of the text based browsers found out there either. I'm aware of the mobile browser platform and there is an active list used with regular expression for identification purposes that I will use as well as whatever I can find for the desktop platforms.
