• How do I use JDK 7 on Mac OSX?

  OK. This is a newbie question but I can't figure it out... I would like to use the WatchService API as mentioned in this link: http://download.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/essential/io/notification.html After reading around, I found out that WatchService is part of the NIO class which is scheduled for JDK 7. So, it is in beta form. It's fine. http://jdk7.java.net/download.html has the JDK which I downloaded and extracted. I got a bunch of folders. I don't know what to do with them. Then, I read around some more and found that some nice group of people created JDK 7 as a binary so someone like me can install it easily. It is called Open JDK: http://code.google.com/p/openjdk-osx-build/ So, I downloaded the .dmg file and instal it. Then I open "Java Preference" and see that OpenJDK7 is available. So, now I feel that I can start trying out WatchService API. From the tutorial in the first link, the author gave a .java file to test it out first and make sure that it is running. Here is the link to the file: http://download.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/essential/io/examples/WatchDir.java So, I boot up Eclipse (actually I use STS) and create a new Java project and choose JaveSE-1.7 in the "use an execution environment JRE:". Under the src folder, I copy pasted the WatchDir.java file. And I still see tons of squiggly red lines. All the "import.java.nio.*" are all red and I cannot run it as a Java app. If you read this far, thanks a lot. So, now... What do I need to do? Thanks. EDIT: I actually did not pursue using Java 7 but there are a lot of interest in it and it seems like people keep answering this question. What should I do to make it more relevant to people who search for it? Let me know by PMing me. Thanks.

• SQL To Filter A SubSet Of Data

  I have an arraylist that holds a subset of names found in my database. I need to write a query to get a count of the people in the arraylist for certain sections i.e. There is a field "City" in my database from the people in the arraylist of names I want to know how many of them live in Chicago, how many live in New York etc. Can someone help me how I might set up an sql statement to handle this. I think somehow I have to pass the subset of names to sql somehow.

  This is a general question, or perhaps a request for pointers to other open source projects to look at: I'm wondering how people merge an anonymous user's session data into the authenticated user data when a user logs in. For example, someone is browsing around your websites saving various items as favourites. He's not logged in, so they're saved to an anonymous user's data. Then he logs in, and we need to merge all that data into their (possibly existing) user data. Is this done different ways in an ad-hoc fashion for different applications? Or are there some best practices or other projects people can direct me to?

  How can I check what objects, tools, variables, anything... are used from .NET 2.0 in a C# application. How can I get a C# application run without .NET 2.0 ? UPDATE: sorry, I didn't clarify enought. Here's my situation: I have developed a pretty simple application in C#: embeded browser which displayes static webpages with an option of searching inside of these html pages. I'm using simple textbox, buttons components for this. The application will be distribuited for people wich have very old PCs, even with windows 95. I would like the app to be runable on it, or at least on win 98, without telling the people to install .NET 2.0, as the users don;t really have PC usage skills :) .

• Contacts activity doesn't return data

  In my app I simply open the list of activities and when a contact is clicked I attempt to retrieve the name of the contact selected and put it into a string. The app crashes in the onActivityResult() function. • Develop iPhone application remotely?

  4 java developers are new to iPod Touch/iPhone app development. They have an idea for an app. They have never used Xcode or Macs before. Instead of spending money for a new iMac or Mac Mini for each of them, my boss would like to sell them a $999 Apple server, hosted at a facility connected a single T1 line, and have all 4 people work remotely in Xcode. Is this feasible? Is anyone doing anything like this? Specifically, is 1 T1 enough for realistic remote app development? Would they have to work in black & white via Logmein or Gotomeeting to get decent speed? Can four people work remotely together on an Xcode project at the same time? Do they absolutely need their own Macs to connect their iPod Touches or iPhones physically to, or can they connect to their existing PCs with iTunes and install their in-development apps that way?

  I'm completely mystified. I do not understand why Eclipse does not show me my list of projects! And all the answers I've seen to similar questions do not mention any 'go here and do that' type of answers. I tried 'Import/General/Existing Projects into Workspace/browse-to...' but that told me the project was already in the workspace. But I KNEW THAT! The project menu does not have an 'open project' option!!!! There is no 'open workspace' option. How do people open Eclipse and 'resume working'??? What is the single, dependable, repeatable option for opening the 'project tree' to show my project? [or tell me my expectations that Java people are smarter are way off base!] Thanks, Kimball

• Android App: Proximity

  Is there an API for Android that will find other people nearby running the same app? For instance, if you were to perform a "scan" it tries to find other people running the same app nearby. Would it be possible to perform the same task across multiple OS (Android, iPhone, Windows, etc.)? Or would the best way be to just have the app communicate to a server your location and have a server-side app that pushes a list of others nearby??? My goal is to find an easy way to eventually transmit data between two devices contigent on those that are nearby.

• Using SVN alone or in small workgroups - workflow approach?

  Hi everybody, I have spent some months working on a web application and we're come close to production stage. It's soon time to expand the development group with 1-3 people on this project. I have not too much experience on working with SVN, but It's obviously the choice for a big part of the larger companies out there, so I am guessing that the pros of SVN without a doubt outweights the time spent on commit/check ins / check outs etc. The workflow seems to become a bit more complicated with SVN, and even though I have read Version Control with Subversion by O'Reilly Media and I am not sure yet if it's overkill to use SVN for any reasons besides backup when developing alone or in a small (1-3 people) workgroup? How do you do it? What's your workflow with version control while working alone or in small workgroups? Thanks!

• Having a UITextField in a UITableViewCell

  Hi! I'm trying to do that for a couple of days now, and after reading tons of messages of people trying to do that too, I'm still unable to have a fully working UITextField in some of my UITableViewCells, just like in this example: http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/4858/picture4za3.png Either I have the form working but the text is not visible (although I set its color to blue), the keyboard goes on the field when I click on it and I haven't been able to correctly implement the keyboard events. I tried with a bunch of examples from Apple (mainly UICatalog, where there is a kinda similar control) but it's still not working correctly. Can somebody help me (and all the people trying to realize this control) and post a simple implementation of a UITextField in a UITableViewCell, that works fine? Thank you very much.

• Vector Troubles in C++

  I am currently working on a project that deals with a vector of objects of a People class. The program compiles and runs just fine, but when I use the debugger it dies when trying to do anything with the PersonWrangler object. I currently have 3 different classes, one for the person, a personwrangler which handles all of the people collectively, and a game class that handles the game input and output. Edit: My basic question is to understand why it is dying when it calls outputPeople. Also I would like to understand why my program works exactly as it should unless I use the debugger. The outputPeople function works the way I intended that way.   I have 3 tables in my database. ab_contacts id first_name last_name addressbook_id ab_addressbooks name id co_comments id link_id comment I'd like to create a query that will let me select all the contacts and comments related to them in a given addressbook. To select all the people in a given addressbook, I can use: select count(*) from ab_contacts where addressbook_id = '50'; This returns 8152 people. However, when I run my query: select ab_contacts.first_name, ab_contacts.last_name, ab_contacts.email, ab_addressbooks.name, co_comments.comments from ab_contacts JOIN ab_addressbooks ON (ab_contacts.addressbook_id = ab_addressbooks.id) JOIN co_comments ON (ab_contacts.id = co_comments.link_id) WHERE ab_contacts.addressbook_id = '50';` the format works, but I only get 1045 results. I'm sure there is something I am missing, but I cannot figure it out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Correct folder structure for sites

  I've just started tidying up the server for a particular site and am running into some trouble when moving files. I originally had style.css in my main folder, and another folder called images, so paths in the .css went images/myimage.png Now I have moved style.css into another folder called css. So the image links in the CSS no longer work, as it's looking for the folder images from it's own CSS folder. I changed the file path to /images/myimage.png as I thought this would make it climb up a level and then look for the images folder, but this doesn't seem to work. I'm interested to see what solutions people have and also any suggestions on how people organise their folders for a particular site. Thanks!

  Hello I've been tasked with doing a few queries on a large SQL Server 2000 database. The query I'm having trouble with is "find the number of people between ages 20 and 40" How would I do this? My previous query to get a count of everyone looks like this: select count(rid) from people where ... (with the ... being irrelevant conditions). I've googled some but the only thing I've found for calculating age is so large that I don't see how to embed it into a query, or it is a stored procedure which I do not have the permissions to create.   I have a paid app in the store which will remove the ads in another app when it is installed on that device. Now I want to remove this 'remove ads' app, as I want to have an in-app payement for this for instance (or maybe I just keep the ads version only). But the problem is, if I unpublish the app, people who bought it will not be able to download it again when they get a new phone or reset their phone. How to I keep the app in the Play Store, but prevent people from buying it? Is this possible? • How do i force a file to be deleted? Windows server 2008

  On my site a user may upload a file (pic, zip, audio, video, whatever). He then may decide to replace it with a newer revision. This user may upload a file, make a post then decide to put up a new revision replacing the old (lets say its a large zip or tar.gz file). Theres a good chance people may be downloading it if he sent out an email or even im for the home user. Problem. I need to replace the file and people may be downloading and it may be some minutes before it is deleted. I dont want my code to stall until i cant delete or check every second to see if its unused (especially bad if another user can start and he takes long creating a cycle). How do i delete the file while users are downloading the file? i dont care if they stop i just care that the file can be replaced and new downloads are the new revision.

• Prevent .htaccess syntax error

  Hi, As part of one our system's we enable a user in the backoffice to add a block of 301 redirects should they need to. This is just a textarea which then populates a specific area of a .htaccess file. As much as this may seem insecure it has only previously used internally by people who know what they are doing but for various reasons they cannot access the specific file. We need now to allow more access to this function, not for the general public, but for people that probably have far less knowledge of regexp etc and syntax in htaccess files. Obviously the major concern here is the user enters some bad syntax and makes their entire site, including the backoffice where they could fix the issue, totally inaccessible without manual intervention. What approaches can i take to make sure that they do not break their site? A htaccess syntax check? copy the file elsewhere and check it doesnt generate a 500 error (with cURL or similar)?. We are going to have people come from a particular site during a acquisition campaign and was wondering how I could conditionalize a certain section of my site to display a thank you message instead of the sign up form as they would have had the opportunity to fill this out before coming to my landing page. I have seen solutions like: $referal = mysql_real_escape_string($_SERVER['HTTP_REFERER']); I would like to know if this is the best way to get this to work??? - okay this is what i think might work. The third party website that is referring people to our landing page once the form on that site has been filled out can push into the record a hidden input value of "www.sample.com" or whatever... then I can have something check the for that particular value and fire off the conidtional. Does that even sound right?
