• Rails : fighting long http response times with ajax. Is it a good idea? Please, help with implementa

  Hi, everybody! I've googled some tutorials, browsed some SO answers, and was unable to find a recipe for my problem. I'm writing a web site which is supposed to display almost realtime stock chart. Data is stored in constantly updating MySQL database, I wrote a find_by_sql query code which fetches all the data I need to get my chart drawn. Everything is ok, except performance - it takes from one second to one minute for different queries to fetch all the data from the database, this time includes necessary (My)SQL-server side calculations. This is simply unacceptable. I got the following idea: if the data is queried from the MySQL server one point a time instead of entire dataset, it takes only about 1-100ms to get an individual point. I imagine the data fetch process might be browser-driven. After the user presses the button in order to get a chart drawn, controller makes one request to the database and renders, say, a progress bar, say 1% ready. When the browser gets the response, it immediately makes an (ajax) request, and the server fetches the next piece of data and renders "2%". And so on, until all the data is ready and the server displays the requested chart. Could this be implemented in rails+js, is there a tutorial for solving a similar problem on the Web? I suppose if the thing is feasible at all, somebody should have already done this before. I have read several articles about ajax, I believe I do understand general principles, but never did nontrivial ajax programming myself. Thanks for your time!

• Why isn't this simple PHP/MySQL code working?

  I am very new to php/mysql and this is causing me to loose hairs, I am trying to build a multi level site navigation. In this part of my script I am readying the sub and parent categories coming from a form for insertion into the database: // get child categories $catFields = $_POST['categories']; if (is_array($catFields)) { $categories = $categories; for ($i=0; $i<count($catFields); $i++) { $categories = $categories . $catFields[$i]"; } } // get parent category $select = mysql_query ("SELECT parent FROM categories WHERE id = $categories"); while ($return = mysql_fetch_assoc($select)) { $parentId = $return['parent']; } The first part of my script works fine, it grabs all the categories that the user has chosen to assign a post by checking the checkboxes in a form and readies it for insertion into the database. But the second part does not work and I can't understand why. I am trying to match a category with a parent that is stored in it's own table, but it returns nothing even though the categories all have parents. Can anyone tell me why this is? p.s. The $categories variable contains the sub category id.

• PHP - "Fat Free Framework" Find Methods and Showing Results in Template

  Just started trying the "Fat Free Framework" I'm building a site using a MySQL DB with 265 fields, and 5000+ rows in the DB; I can load() a specific record easily, no problems. When using find(), afind(), and even "select()", template will show blank lines or lines with "filler" text, with the correct number of rows for the query results, but no text/data from the DB itself; Same problem whether using objects or simply arrays from result (afind() and find()). I've copied/pasted the code verbatim from examples and from documentation, with only the DB specific items changed. Still, no luck. Some data: Shared hosting, no SSH access, only hosting provider panel PHP version 5.2.5 Last year I built a site which had no problems sending mail with the same hosting Let's say the domain is “domain.com” and my private address is “[email protected]” for anonimity's sake in the following code. • Cookie not renewing/overwriting in IE

  I have a weird quirk with cookies in IE. When a user logs into the site, I'm generating a new session id and hence need to overwrite the cookie. The flow is basically: Client goes to https://secure.example.com/users/login page, automatically receiving a session id Client POSTs login credentials to same address Client receives the following headers together with a 302 redirect to https://secure.example.com/users/mypage: CAKEPHP=deleted; expires=Sun, 05-Apr-2009 04:50:35 GMT; path=/ CAKEPHP=98hnIO23...; expires=Mon, 12 Apr 2010 04:50:36 GMT; path=/; secure Client is supposed to visit https://secure.example.com/users/mypage, presenting the new session id. This works in all browsers, except IE (tested in 7 & 8). IE retains the old, unauthenticated session id, and is redirected back to the login page. It works on my local test environment (using a self-signed certificate at https://localhost:8443/...), but not on the live server. I'm using CakePHP and simply issue a $this->Session->renew(), which produces the above cookie headers. Any ideas how to get IE to accept the new cookie?

• Skip Checkout in Magento for a downloadable product

  Hello Magento boffins. I am using Magento to build an eBooks site. For the release, we plan to have a number of free downloadable books. We were hoping that it would be possible to use the normal Magento 'catalog' functionality to add categories with products underneath. However, since these are free downloadable products, it doesn't really make sense to send users through the checkout when they try to download. Does anyone know of a way to create a free downloadable product which bypasses the checkout altogether? I have noticed that there is a 'free sample' option for downloadable products, but I would prefer not to use this if I can as I plan to use this field for its intended purpose when I add paid products. [EDIT] I have noticed that some of you have voted this question down for 'lack of question clarity'. For clarity, I want: to know if it is possible to create a downloadable product in Magento which doesn't require users to go through the usual checkout process (since it is free) and which is not the 'Free Sample' field of a downloadable product Unfortunately I don't think I can ask this any more eloquently.   I'm fairly new with PHP and I am messing around with a login/registration system. On the registration page the form links to my "register.php" which checks the validity of the form and to check for any blank fields and so on. This field is hidden until the user makes a mistake. <?php if (isset($reg_error)) { ?> , please try again. My "register.php" checks the form for all the errors. Here's the bit of code that will refresh the page with the reason for the error: // Check if any of the fields are missing if (empty($_POST['username']) || empty($_POST['password']) || empty($_POST['confirmpass'])) { // Reshow the form with an error $reg_error = 'One or more fields missing'; include 'register_form.php'; Now after I submit the form without any fields filled out I get the error code, but it refreshes to the actual "register_form.php". The problem with this is that because of my PHP-SWITCH script (helps me manage the site a lot easier) I don't have any formatting on that page. The actual URL to my "register_form.php" would be: "index.php?id=register_form.php". Now I have tried several different things such as changing it to: include 'index.php?id=register_form.php' And also changing it to: header(location:index.php?id=register_form.php') Unfortunately all this does is refresh the page without the reason for the error. I know this can be easily solved by just adding a Javascript Validator but I'd like to know if it is possible to refresh the page with the error using either "include" or "header()" while having a PHP-SWITCH script on the website.

• How to suppress error message details to general DNN Users

  I have a DNN site (05.02.03) in test and nearing release into production and I would like to suppress the details of error messages (i.e. Null Reference Exception, and others) to general users (admins can still see the details). Debug is off in the web.config. By suppressing, I mean the only error message I want to display to the general user (all users) is something like "An Exception has occured". I don't want the details of that exception to be displayed to the general user. I still want it logged in greater detail in the Event Viewer. How would I go about doing this? Update: I have "Use Custom Error Messages" checked. Which shows a error message like: A critical error has occurred.[vbCrLf] Object reference not set to an instance of an object. I want just the "A critical error has occured." error message to be displayed to general users. I don't want the "Object referece not set to an instance of an object." to be displayed to general users

• Reuse, Rewrite, or Refactor?

  At work I inherited development of a PHP-based Web site after the consultant who originally produced it bailed out and left without a trace. Literally half of the code is ripped from online tutorials, and there are thousands of lines of cruft that, being incomplete, do precious little. Hardly any of it actually works. I've been trying to pull out the usable components, such as the layout (cleverly intermixed with code), session management (delicately seasoned with unescaped, unvalidated SQL queries), and a few other things, but it's very difficult to force all of this junk into place. Further, I don't speak idiomatic PHP, being more of a Perl user, and I'm supposed to be on this project principally for maintenance, so rewriting everything seems like it would take just as long as wrestling the existing monster back into place. As an aside, I have literally never seen anything as badly written as this. Welcome me to the world of working with other people's code, I guess, but I do hope it's not this common in the real world to have such gems as these: // WHY IS THIS NOT WORKING // I know this is bad but were going for working stuff right now... // This is a PHP code outputing Javascript code outputting HTML...do not go further // Not userful I'm looking for the best advice I can get here. • How do I stop redirection after form submittion?

Since I want to complete this part of the site today I can't afford to learn AJAX from the basics to do this now.. This shouldn't be something difficult and I thougt that I would be able to do this but I'm not skilled enough... I have a form, when you click submit, it posts to twitter.com/statuses/update.xml and I need to be able to do so without being redirected there. Is there an easy way to do this or do I need to learn AJAX? • Detecting whether user stayed after prompting onBeforeUnload

  In a web app I'm working on, I'm capturing onBeforeUnload to ask the user whether he really wants to exit. Now, if he decides to stay, there are a number of things I'd like to do. What I'm trying to figure out is that he actually chose to stay. I can of course declare a SetTimeout for "x" seconds, and if that fires, then it would mean the user is still there (because we didn't get unloaded). The problem is that the user can take any time to decide whether to stay or not... I was first hoping that while the dialog was showing, SetTimeout calls would not fire, so I could set a timeout for a short time and it'd only fire if the user chose to stay. However, timeouts do fire while the dialog is shown, so that doesn't work. Another idea I tried is capturing mouseMoves on the window/document. While the dialog is shown, mouseMoves indeed don't fire, except for one weird exception that really applies to my case, so that won't work either. Can anyone think of other way to do this? Thanks! (In case you're curious, the reason capturing mouseMove doesn't work is that I have an IFrame in my page, containing a site from another domain. If at the time of unloading the page, the focus is within the IFrame, while the dialog shows, then I get the MouseMove event firing ONCE when the mouse moves from inside the IFrame to the outside (at least in Firefox). That's probably a bug, but still, it's very likely that'll happen in our case, so I can't use this method).

The first initial thought is to use django's build in user handling, but then the user model is too narrow and does not contain fields that I need. The documentation mentions user profiles, but user profiles section has been removed from djangobook covering django 1.0 (ideally, the solution should work with django 1.2), and the Internet is full of different solutions, not making the choice easier (like user model inheritance, user profiles and django signals, and so on). I would like to know, how to write this in good, modern, fast and secure way. Should I try to extend django builtin user model, or maybe should I create my own user model wide enough to keep all the information I need? • curl: downloading from dynamic url

  I'm trying to download an html file with curl in bash. Like this site: http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/schedule/detselect.aspx?termsel=10S&subareasel=PHYSICS&idxcrs=0001B+++ When I download it manually, it works fine. However, when i try and run my script through crontab, the output html file is very small and just says "Object moved to here." with a broken link. Does this have something to do with the sparse environment the crontab commands run it? What are the equivalent command line options or variables to set to fix this problem in bash? (I want to do this with curl, not wget) Edit: well, sometimes downloading the file manually (via interactive shell) works, but sometimes it doesn't (I still get the "Object moved here" message). • How to handle refunds or rebates via a payment processor?

  I need to handle online payments and am trying to choose a payment processor. One requirement is to handle refunds and rebates to the customer. These won't always be at the time of sale, and not for the entire amount of the purchase. Is this something all payment processors handle? I don't want to have to do this manually as there may be many rebates, and they may be for relatively small amounts. I see PayPal has a refund API, but other parts of their site talk about sending a refund within 60 days. Is this something also required by the API? Amazon FPS also has a refund API that seems a bit more flexible. The Google Checkout refund has an amout field, but it's unclear to me if you can do a partial refund as the description reads "The refund-order command instructs Google Checkout to refund the buyer for a particular order." What are some things to look out for when looking for a payment processor that can handle rebates and refunds? Is there always a time limit in issuing these refunds? Is using a merchant account better for this type of process? I was hoping to avoid that due to the increased cost and complexity, but would consider it if it meets all of my requirements. Update It appears the refund process is fairly simple and handled by all processors. Is there any additional information on rebates? I would like to avoid a process of sending live checks to customers, but I will have to send rebates in some small amounts that may be a few months after the initial purchase.

  Hi all, We are having an annoying issue with Firefox and cookies. We have the following domains: sub1.mydomain.com sub2.mydomain.com sub3.mydomain.com otherdomain.com We have converting our framework to be multilingual and providing a drop down to change the language at any point during site. The code base is shared across all the domains above. We can not set a cookie across all "mydomain.com" sites, they have to be on each of the sub domains. To get this to work we set a JavaScript cookie when the users chooses a new language. When the page posts back to the server the code picks this up and sets the users preferences to that new language code, (this is all C# and ASP.NET). We have to set the host to be "subX.mydomain.com" and the path to be "/" in the cookie so that it is just for the subdomain and all parts of that domain. This works great on all browsers apart from FireFox. It seems that firefox will pre append a DOT to the beginning of domain so ".subX.mydomain.com". When the code posts back with FireFox the cookie is always null. Has anyone had this situation, (I imagine it is not al that uncommon). I have read a lot of people saying, remove the domain from the cookie, but that can not work for us as we have multiple subdomains that need their own cookie values. Thanks

• Render an SSRS report with a Map as an image map without actually having a ReportViewer on the page

  I have a report that has a Map with spatial data. Clicking an object on that map sends you to other pages on the site. I have tried a few different ways of displaying the report: If I put a ReportViewer on the actual page, the page sometimes takes 10+ seconds to load, but the report viewer creates a fully operable image map. If I create a ReportViewer in the code behind, I can use the Render method to to format the report as HTML4.0 and get the streamids from which I can extract the image (painfully). This is pretty fast (1-2 seconds), but only gives me an image, no image map. I can get a very similar functionality as the above example by using rendering extensions on the report URL to create an image and then set an image's source to this url. This is the fastest method, but still does not create an image map. So is there a way to create an image map from the report without having to use the ReportViewer? Or a way to substantially speed up the Report Viewer?

• .NET 4.0 Forms Authentication change?

  I'm seeing some new behavior in Forms Authentication after upgrading to .NET 4.0. This occurs only on IIS 6, not on 7. Background - In web.config, we configure Forms Authentication, and then use <authorization tags to globally deny anonymous/unauthenticated users access. Then we explicitly allow access to a login.aspx page using a <location tag. Generally, this works fine, as it did when we were on .NET 2.0 (3.5). The issue only occurs when we visit the root path of the site, ie "http://myserver/". Our default document is configured in IIS to be login.aspx. Under .NET 4.0, upon visiting that URL, we're redirected to "http://myserver/login.aspx?ReturnUrl=/". If you log in from here, you're logged in and returned back at the log in page (yuck). Just wanted to post this here to see if anyone else is experiencing this. It's not listed on any "breaking changes" documentation I've been able to find. Either I'm missing something, or the UrlAuthorization module has changed and is no longer "smart" about IIS default documents.
