  • How to explain that writing universally cross-platform C++ code and shipping products for all OSes is not that easy?

    Our company ships a range of desktop products for Windows and lots of Linux users complain on forums that we should have been written versions of our products for Linux years ago and the reason why we don't do that is we're a greedy corporation all our technical specialists are underqualified idiots Our average product is something like 3 million lines of C++ code. My and my colleagues analysis is the following: writing cross-platform C++ code is not that easy preparing a lot of distribution packages and maintaining them for all widespread versions of Linux takes time our estimate is that Linux market is something like 5-15% of all users and those users will likely not want to pay for our effort when this is brought up the response is again that we're greedy underqualified idiots and that when everything is done right all this is easy and painless. How reasonable are our evaluations of the fact that writing cross-platform code and maintaining numerous ditribution packages takes lots of effort? Where can we find some easy yet detailed analysis with real life stories that show beyond the shadow of a doubt what amount of effort exactly it takes?

    I am new in Ubuntu and I had a big trouble with wifi. My ubuntu 12.10 doesn't detect my wifi card and I can't toggle the "activate wireless" option on the tasks bar (it is grey).   • Replace conditional with polymorphism refactoring or similar?

    Hi, I have tried to ask a variant of this question before. I got some helpful answers, but still nothing that felt quite right to me. It seems to me this shouldn't really be that hard a nut to crack, but I'm not able to find an elegant simple solution. (Here's my previous post, but please try to look at the problem stated here as procedural code first so as not to be influenced by the earlier explanation which seemed to lead to very complicated solutions: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2772858/design-pattern-for-cost-calculator-app ) Basically, the problem is to create a calculator for hours needed for projects that can contain a number of services. In this case "writing" and "analysis". The hours are calculated differently for the different services: writing is calculated by multiplying a "per product" hour rate with the number of products, and the more products are included in the project, the lower the hour rate is, but the total number of hours is accumulated progressively (i.e. for a medium-sized project you take both the small range pricing and then add the medium range pricing up to the number of actual products). Whereas for analysis it's much simpler, it is just a bulk rate for each size range. How would you be able to refactor this into an elegant and preferably simple object-oriented version (please note that I would never write it like this in a purely procedural manner, this is just to show the problem in another way succinctly). I have been thinking in terms of factory, strategy and decorator patterns, but can't get any to work well. (I read Head First Design Patterns a while back, and both the decorator and factory patterns described have some similarities to this problem, but I have trouble seeing them as good solutions as stated there. The decorator example seems very complicated for just adding condiments, but maybe it could work better here, I don't know. And the factory pattern example with the pizza factory...well it just seems to create such a ridiculous explosion of classes, at least in their example. I have found good use for factory patterns before, but I can't see how I could use it here without getting a really complicated set of classes) The main goal would be to only have to change in one place (loose coupling etc) if I were to add a new parameter (say another size, like XSMALL, and/or another service, like "Administration").   • Can the Flash CS4 [embed] tag be made to export assets to frame 2 rather than frame 1?

    We're working on a Flash CS4 project where the main .fla file has ballooned in size and 'Publish' is taking forever. I suspect a large amount of the size (and at least some of the compile time) is due to the quantity of audio symbols in the library. I would love to remove this unnecessary bloat from the .fla file. I've experimented with removing an audio symbol from the library and using the [embed] metadata tag instead, like so: [Embed(source="audio/music/EndOfLevelDitty.mp3")] public var EndOfLevelDitty:Class The resulting published file works perfectly, but there is a problem. Our game uses a preloader on the first frame of the timeline, so all other classes need to be exported in frame 2 (as set in Publish Settings ActionScript 3.0 Settings). So a size report normally begins like this: Frame # Frame Bytes Total Bytes Scene ------- ----------- ----------- ---------------- 1 284515 284515 Scene 1 2 5485305 5769820 (AS 3.0 Classes Export Frame) However, if I use an [embed] tag on a small sound, my size report is now: Frame # Frame Bytes Total Bytes Scene ------- ----------- ----------- ---------------- 1 363320 363320 Scene 1 2 5407240 5770560 (AS 3.0 Classes Export Frame) As you can see, the embedded sound has been exported into frame 1 rather than frame 2. If I were to embed all sounds in this manner, the size of frame 1 would grow to be huge, and users would be looking at a white screen for ages before the preloader frame even loaded. So my question is this: can I use an [embed] tag but have the embedded asset export in frame 2 instead of frame 1? Project constraints: Our team composition means we can't change to pure Flex at this stage. The compiled .swf needs to be 'all in one', so we can't split the preloader into a separate file, and we can't access external resources. Edit: I'd also settle for having the audio in an embedded library SWC, but there seems to be no way to make that embed in frame 2 either; it always ends up in frame 1.

I know the name of the accessors for each object, but am unsure if it is possible to pass the requested accessor as a variable or otherwise achieve the desired refactoring.
