• Windows 7 Boot Loader - Remove 30 second waiting time

  I've installed Fedora 17 and Windows 7 on two different hard disks as a dual-boot system. The default boot loader is GRUB 2 maintained and configured in Fedora 17. When I startup and choose "Windows 7 bootloader (on /dev/sda1)" in GRUB 2, Windows 7 boot loader will appear, with only Windows 7 as the only choice and also the default operating system, with a 30 second waiting time if no input is detected. I'm trying to see if it is possible to remove this 30-second waiting time. I've tried to follow the instructions on the Web by configuring default operating system in the control panel but seems there is something wrong with it. I've also tried to use "bcdedit enum /all" but still receives error prompts. Update: Added my boot tab screen in msconfig.

• Ubuntu 12.04 can't boot after installing with software RAID 1

  I've been trying to install Ubuntu with software RAID on my server and there is obviously something that I don't understand about the process. This is the guide that I followed: https://help.ubuntu.com/11.04/serverguide/advanced-installation.html I have two identical 1 TB disks in my server. I went through the initial install process and manually set up my partitions. On each disk I set up: (1) 100 MB partition for EFI boot (I didn't originally have this but added it based on a forum post I found after my original install failed to boot, I ended up with EFIboot since that was what the 'guided partitioning' decided to do) (1) 970 MB partition for / (1) 30 MB partition for swap I then created new RAID 1 disks combining the two partitions, one from each disk, such that each partition is mirrored. I then configured their usage as stated above. After saving the configuration I said yes to boot in a degraded state. The rest of the setup went normally, no errors of any kind. I saw GRUB being installed and again no errors. However, after rebooting the server I get the dreaded 'Insert boot media' and nothing happens. I loaded up the recovery disk and the mdadm configuration looks correct. md0 is my EFIBoot partition md1 is my \ partition using ext4 md2 is my swap partition Running file -s /dev/md0 doesn't indicate that GRUB is there and so I attempted to reinstall GRUB using the recovery disk. I selected the md0 disk and it appeared to install just fine. Running file -s /dev/md1 shows the error needs journal recovery, I'm not sure if that's related or not or how to fix that. Rebooting gives me the same problem, no boot media found. I've searched around the internet but can't figure out what to do next or more importantly how to troubleshoot what exactly is going wrong.   I have TimeMachine enabled for my external HDD. I'm triggering backups manually 2 times per week. I have noticed, that some snapshots, that i made, are gone. I noticed this behaviour several weeks later, but i had doubts. To make it sure, i've recorded screen video with listing snapshots in TimeMachine. After watching my screen recording today, I'm sure, that for Augusut i had 9 snapshots. Now, i have only 3 of them. What's happening ? I had no crash disk reports, errors etc

• Replacing GRUB2 with Windows boot loader

  I'm trying to replace GRUB2 with Windows' standard boot loader (bootmgr?), but I can't get it to work. My Windows 7 install is in a single NTFS partition, which is marked as active (boot flag is set). First, I tried the automatic repair with the install disk, but it didn't detect any problems. Then I ran bootrec /fixmbr and bootrec /fixboot, but all I got was a black screen at boot with a blinking cursor. After that I created a boot partition for GRUB2, I figured, at least I can use it to chainload, but it give me a "disk reading error". If I used GRUB's ntldr loader, than I got error 0xc0000225 (some sort of BCD error). I tried to rebuild the BCD from the rescue environment, and it was successful, but the error didn't go away. Update: I've tried to rebuild the BCD, but nothing changed...

• Can't boot into my Windows 7 64-bit Acer laptop

  Boot normally -- it hangs on "Starting Windows" animation forever. Boot safe mode -- it bluescreens. Boot with a recovery CD (or try Repair Installation directly without a CD) -- it hangs on the green loading bar forever. I dual-boot Ubuntu and can get into the Ubuntu partition fine so I don't think anything is necessarily wrong with the harddrive, but the Ubuntu partition is tiny and I rarely use it and can't access my Windows files anyway. Is there anything I can try that'll help repair whatever happened? I just want to run a checkdisk utility or something similar that'll repair whatever got botched.   I installed Ubuntu in my new notebook. It originally comes with Windows 7 installed on it. Everything works nice however every time i boot into Windows7 the grub menu doesn't work any more. i can't boot into windows or ubuntu any more. How do I stop this? Its rather annoying to have to boot, chroot and fix this problem everytime.

Current source code is not any study material but it gives you idea how to make calendars work together. Future releases will introduce many design and architectural improvements. • Time Travel 101

  I’m thinking maybe I should have used Time Crunching 101 as the title instead… or maybe ‘Duh Duffy, where have you been? Everyone knows that!” Ok, so maybe you won’t actually learn how to travel through time from this post but you will learn how to cram more learning into one day. We all know you can’t make it to every conference, every presentation, or every training session. The good news is that many of those events make their content available to either watch online or to download for off-line viewing. The problem is who has time to sit and watch all those presentations in real time? Not me. One trick I use is to view the content at an increased play rate. Why listen to a boring speaker like me drone on for the entire length of the session when you can listen to them drone on in almost half the time. :-) I view nearly all off-line content with Windows Media Player though I’m sure you can implement this idea with any media playback software. The idea is changing the playback speed you view the content at. With Windows Media Player you can change the play speed from the menu system. Once you have the Play Speed Setting panel open you can specify the playback speed. Depending on the content and the presenter I can typically listen between 1.6 and 2.0 times normal speed. My Florida edumacation taught me that playing the video back at twice the speed means I’ll listen to it twice as fast and that means I can view it in almost 1/2 the time.  Too bad it won’t make me twice as smart. :-) I hope this helps you speed your way through more training content. • At the time of installing ubuntu, i am getting dark black screen only

  I am trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS dual boot with Windows 7, but when i click on Try or even Install ubuntu, i am getting black screen only. I can't see any text or anything else. When i see my Laptop's screen from close look, ubuntu in the middle of screen shown but screen is dark black. So because of this i am unable to install Ubuntu on my laptop. Please help in this regard. Following deatails of my laptop. Because there is no option shown for F6 key. My laptop is Acer aspire 4736, and my Video/Graphics card shows unknown by ubuntu. Please someone help me. Can changing or upgrading my laptop's graphic card solve this problem..?? If yes then, which graphic card should i go for which is supported by Ubuntu and other Linux distros? Please someone help.

• Using the Java SE 8 Date Time API with JPA 2.1

  Most of you are hopefully aware of the new Date Time API included in Java SE 8. If you are not, you should check them out right now using the Java Tutorial Trail dedicated to the topic. It is a significantly leap forward in processing temporal data in Java. For those who already use Joda-Time the changes will look very familiar - very simplistically speaking the Java SE 8 feature is basically Joda-Time standardized. Quite naturally you will likely want to use the new Date Time APIs in your JPA domain model to better represent temporal data. The problem is that JPA 2.1 will not support the new API out of the box. So what are you to do? Fortunately you can make use of fairly simple JPA 2.1 Type Converters to use the Date Time API in your JPA domain classes. Steven Gertiser shows you how to do it in an extremely well written blog entry. Besides explaining the problem and the solution the entry is actually very good for getting a better understanding of JPA 2.1 Type Converters as well. I think such a set of converters may be a good fit for Apache DeltaSpike as a Java EE 7 extension? In case you are wondering about Java SE 8 support in the JPA specification itself, Nick Williams has already entered an excellent, well researched JIRA entry asking for such support in a future version of the JPA specification that's well worth looking at. Another possibility of course is for JPA providers to start supporting the Date Time API natively before anything is formalized in the specification. What do you think?

• Hard time installing Ubuntu

  I have a MSI GT780DXR that currently is booting windows 7. I've been trying to dual boot windows 7 and ubuntu for some time now. Here's specs that I think would make a difference Windows 7 500GB*2 RAID 0 hard drives. (Hardware RAID I'm not sure if it's a dedicated RAID card though) 7200RPM Nvidia GT570M Background: I tried to install 12.04 (64 bit) a few times but the Desktop live cd and pendrive boots with a black screen. I've tried wubi but it boots to a black screen as well. I then tried the alternative 12.04 (64 bit) and went through the installation all the way til partitioning. I let Ubuntu notice the raid setup and I setup my swap, /, and home drives, I used my free space to create the three partitions. I tried to resize the windows drive and it told me I couldn't and to be happy with my current setup. When I finally got past I got an error on installing GRUB 2 and decided to skip it and continued on to finish installation. When I tried to boot up I got an invalid partition table error. Windows recovery disc, and a GPARTED live cd couldn't find any hard drives. I ended up following advice and typed this into the recovery command prompt. bootrec /fixmbr bootrec /fixboot bootrec /rebuildBcd It worked and here I am now. The question is, how would I be able to dual boot windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 with this information? Thanks,

• How do I add a boot from cd option to yaboot?

  So I'm dual-booting Ubuntu 12.04.1 on my iMac G5 powepc alongside Mac OS X and I want to add a boot cd option to yaboot because I'm trying to boot a scratched Mac OS X installation DVD that takes a while to read and the frst bootstrap moves on too fast. How do I edit the timeout for the first bootstrap anyways? So, my main question is, how do I add a cd booting option to yaboot and then, how doI boot it? The devalias from OpenFrmware tells me that 1 have 2 cd-rom instaled, on is /ht/pci@3/ata-6/disk@0 and the other on ends with a 1 instead of a zero. These are the contents of my yaboot.conf file: yaboot.conf generated by the Ubuntu installer run: "man yaboot.conf" for details. Do not make changes until you have!! see also: /usr/share/doc/yaboot/examples for example configurations.   I have an Asus u56e laptop running dual boot setup, Windows 7 and 12.04. I had Windows 7 first. I was wondering what's the easiest way possible to erase/format my drive (500GB) so that it deletes Ubuntu and Windows 7 so I can reinstall 12.04 onto my whole drive? Does the Ubuntu Live CD help make this a possibility or is there something with gparted I have to tinker with? I've already got everything I need backed up. Any help would be much appreciated.

  for work I need to get a a new and cheap graphics card for a dual boot machine: windows xp/ubuntu 12.04 LTS. The only requirements I have are: it should work 'flawlessly' in ubuntu (proprietary drivers are ok) it should handle Guild Wars 2 & League of Legends in windows xp (this is really the top priority as we need to be able to play at work :) - yes I have a cool job) I know nothing about graphics cards (and it seems to be a jungle out there). • Can't boot into ubuntu, black screen after grub menu

  Ubuntu is not booting properly for me anymore. The grub menu comes up, and whether I choose a linux recovery mode or the normal one I get a black screen after a few seconds. There is a brief message about vga=791 being deprecated, but I am not able to read it fully because the black screen covers it up almost immediately. I have googled for hours for solutions, and most people seem able to solve similar problems by editing in grub and adding nomodeset into the line starting with linux /boot... but this solution is not working for me, I still don't get any GUI. Sometimes I am able to get the dmesg rolling past, I think it was when I removed quiet splash from that line, but still no GUI - the computer seems to be on and working because it responds to a ctrl-alt-del and reboots. I have tried with 3 different graphics cards (2 nVidia and 1 ATI) and swapping them doesn't seem to change the behaviour at all. What else can I try?

• Cannot boot from USB disk with "not a COM32R image" error

  After installing 11.10 on my Dell Studo 15 (Model 1557) laptop, it started to overheat. Recently it even shutdown twice saying that critical temperature has reached even when I was just idling (not even a single program was open except for Firefox). After learning that it is a problem with 3.0.0 kernel I decided to roll back to 10.04 LTS. I have downloaded the most recent 10.04 iso from ubuntu.com and created a live USB using startup disk creator in 11.10. But when I am trying to boot from USB I am getting the following error vesamenu.c32: not a COM32R image I have installed ubuntu from usb stick a couple of dozen times before this and I think it is not a problem with my hardware. Please tell me what to do.

  I have downloaded Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 32 bit, burnt it on DVD and tried to install on my PC. My PC running in Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit mounted on C: drive. Now I want install Ubuntu along with my Windows 7. When I boot Ubuntu through CD, It boots and Ubuntu install window opens. Ask "Try Ubuntu" and "Install Ubuntu". I go on "Install Ubuntu". Then I go on install Ubuntu with Windows (First Option) - install. It shows some blank screen with some lines, and shows "Please Remove installation media and close tray and press enter". Then PC restarts and Run Windows 7 same as before normally. But Ubuntu is not installed. How to solve this problem and install Ubuntu on my PC properly? Note: I am a Android Developer. So I need to install Ubuntu for my Android Development purpose.

• Convert from EFI to BIOS boot

  I have a Samsung Notebook NP900X4C with an LUKS encrypted installation of Linux Mint 15 on it. The system is booting in UEFI mode. The problem is that the samsung-notebook kernel module is disabled in UEFI mode and due to that I am missing features like the keyboard backlight. Is it possible to modify the current installtion so it can boot in BIOS mode? Is this correct that the basic steps would be converting the disk from GPT to MBR and installing grub from a live CD? Would this be possible with a LUKS partition?

• Dell N7110 i7 overheats and doesn't boot when anything is plugged into the USB3 port

  When i plug in any devices (mouse, keyboard) into usb 3.0 system dell n7110 overheats and fan goes crazy with terrible noise. So i'm using 1 usb 2.0 slot now with a usb hub. It doesn't solve the problem completely but system stays at a low fan rate for a longer time. I've tried to lower CPU frequency, but in my case (DELL INSPIRON N7110 i7 on Linux 3.0.0-14-generic #23-Ubuntu SMP Mon Nov 21 20:28:43 UTC 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux) CPU was pretty cool (51 C) and still the same horrible fan noise. Looks like there is no such problems with ubuntu 10.04 (but there're some other problems). Ubuntu even doesn't boot if anything is plugged into usb 3.0
