  • Styling Windows Phone Silverlight Applications

    - by Tim Murphy
    If you have not developed with styles in Silverlight/XAML then it can be challenging and resources can be sparse depending on how deep you get.  One thing that you need to understand is what level you can apply styles and how much they can cascade.  What I am finding is that this doesn’t go to the level that we are used to in HTML and CSS. While styles can be defined at a page level if you want to share styles throughout your application they should be defined in the App.xaml file.  This is of course analogous to placing a style in your HTML file versus an external CSS file.  This is the type of style I will concentrate on in this post. The first thing to look it how styles associate to elements.  TargetType defines the object type that your style will apply to.  In the example below the style is targeting the TextBlock object type. <Style x:Key="TextBlockSmallGray" TargetType="TextBlock"> Next we use a Setter which allows you to apply values for specific attributes of the target object type.  The setters can be a simple value or complex.  The first example here is simply applying a color to the background property of the target. <Setter Property="Background" Value="White"/> The second setter example here is for the same property, but we are applying a the definition of a LinearGradientBrush. <Setter Property="Background"> <Setter.Value> <LinearGradientBrush> <GradientStop Offset="0" Color="Black"/> <GradientStop Offset="1" Color="White"/> </LinearGradientBrush> </Setter.Value> </Setter> The last thing I want to cover here is that you can leverage the system styles and then override or extend them.  The BasedOn attribute of the Style tag allows this sort of inheritance.  In the example below I am going to start with the PhoneTextTitleStyle and then override properties as needed. <Style x:Key="TextBlockTitle" BasedOn="{StaticResource PhoneTextTitle1Style}" TargetType="TextBlock"> So now that we have our styles defined applying it is fairly straight forward.  Add the style name as a static resource to the style property of the element in your page and off you go. <Grid x:Name="LayoutRoot" Style="{StaticResource PageGridStyle}"> So this is one step in creating consistency in your application’s look.  In future posts I will dig a little deeper. del.icio.us Tags: windows phone 7,mobile development,windows phone 7 development,.NET,software development,design,UX

  • Proper way to use a RenderTarget2D to draw multiple textures?

    - by TheBroodian
    In the process of trying to resolve a split screen issue, I've been trying to use a RenderTarget2D to draw a portion of my scene to a Texture2D, and then again to another Texture2D, but the end result of both Texture2D's is coming out the same. Can anybody tell me what I'm doing wrong? Texture2D camera1Render; Texture2D camera2Render; GraphicsDevice.SetRenderTarget(RenderTarget); GraphicsDevice.Clear(Color.Transparent); map.Draw(mapDisplayDevice, Camera1, new Location(0, 0), false); camera1Render = RenderTarget; GraphicsDevice.Clear(Color.Transparent); map.Draw(mapDisplayDevice, Camera2, new Location(0, 0), false); camera2Render = RenderTarget; SetRenderTarget(null);

  • How do I create a curved line or filled circle or generally a circle using C++/SDL?

    - by NoobScratcher
    Hello I've been trying for ages to make a pixel circle using the putpixel function provided by SDL main website here is that function : void putpixel(int x,int y , int color , SDL_Surface* surface) { unsigned int *ptr = static_cast <unsigned int *> (surface->pixels); int offset = y * (surface->pitch/sizeof(unsigned int)); ptr[offset + x] = color; } and my question is how do I curve a line or create an circle arc of pixels or any other curved shape then a rectangle or singular pixel or line. for example here are some pictures filled pixel circle below enter link description here now my idea was too change the x and y value of the pixel position using + and - to create the curves but in practice didn't provide the correct results what my results are in this is to be able to create a circle that is made out of pixels only nothing else. thank you for anyone who takes the time to read this question thanks! :D

  • Multiple Document Interfaces in Visual Basic

    What is Multiple Document Interface (MDI)? In most VB.NET applications, it is using a single document interface (SDI). In this type of interface, every window is unique to aother window. But in multiple document interface, it works by having one parent window with child windows under it. See the screenshot below: As you can see, there is one parent window (in gray color) and there are 3 child windows (in blue, violet and orange color). You can have more than 3 child windows depending on your application requirements. But you can only have one parent window. Depending on the design of your MDI...

  • How to create realistic 2d lighting using colour temperature

    - by Truncheon
    I'm looking for a lighting algorithm that produces realistic lights expressed in kelvins, from about 2500k to 6500k. What I'm confused about is how to make the lights properly interact with the colors of game objects. If a whole level is fully lit (overcast daylight) then it would seem that I should use just the color of the object. But what if I'm in a closed room with no windows, and there is an incandescent bulb shining light in the room? How would that light properly light up the objects in the room? There does not seem to be an obvious solution to the problem. And simply mixing the color of the light with the colors of the object, seems an inaccurate approach.

  • Scale DIV with tiles

    - by user15350
    I am trying to create a repeating background. I have a main DIV with a grid of small 16x16 DIVs. I am trying to scale the main DIV in CSS; when the small DIVs simply have a red background color everything works great, but when there is a background image in the small DIVs then borders become visible between the tiles. This image explains the problem: http://cl.ly/FpNW/o Check the HTML in these examples: With BG-COLOR: http://jsfiddle.net/pTLXw/ With BG-IMG: http://jsfiddle.net/vkpuY/ Does anyone know what is causing this problem and how to fix it? If it is not possible to fix while using DIV, is there another way to do this? Thanks you so much!

  • Uniform not being applied to proper mesh

    - by HaMMeReD
    Ok, I got some code, and you select blocks on a grid. The selection works. I can modify the blocks to be raised when selected and the correct one shows. I set a color which I use in the shader. However, I am trying to change the color before rendering the geometry, and the last rendered geometry (in the sequence) is rendered light. However, to debug logic I decided to move the block up and make it white, in which case one block moves up and another block becomes white. I checked all my logic and it knows the correct one is selected and it is showing in, in the correct place and rendering it correctly. When there is only 1 it works properly. Video Of the bug in action, note how the highlighted and elevated blocks are not the same block, however the code for color and My Renderer is here (For the items being drawn) public void render(Renderer renderer) { mGrid.render(renderer, mGameState); for (Entity e:mGameEntities) { UnitTypes ut = UnitTypes.valueOf((String)e.getObject(D.UNIT_TYPE.ordinal())); if (ut == UnitTypes.Soldier) { renderer.testShader.begin(); renderer.testShader.setUniformMatrix("u_mvpMatrix",mEntityMatrix); renderer.texture_soldier.bind(0); Vector2 pos = (Vector2) e.getObject(D.COORDS.ordinal()); mEntityMatrix.set(renderer.mCamera.combined); if (mSelectedEntities.contains(e)) { mEntityMatrix.translate(pos.x, 1f, pos.y); renderer.testShader.setUniformf("v_color", 0.5f,0.5f,0.5f,1f); } else { mEntityMatrix.translate(pos.x, 0f, pos.y); renderer.testShader.setUniformf("v_color", 1f,1f,1f,1f); } mEntityMatrix.scale(0.2f, 0.2f, 0.2f); renderer.model_soldier.render(renderer.testShader,GL20.GL_TRIANGLES); renderer.testShader.end(); } else if (ut == UnitTypes.Enemy_Infiltrator) { renderer.testShader.begin(); renderer.testShader.setUniformMatrix("u_mvpMatrix",mEntityMatrix); renderer.testShader.setUniformf("v_color", 1.0f,1,1,1.0f); renderer.texture_enemy_infiltrator.bind(0); Vector2 pos = (Vector2) e.getObject(D.COORDS.ordinal()); mEntityMatrix.set(renderer.mCamera.combined); mEntityMatrix.translate(pos.x, 0f, pos.y); mEntityMatrix.scale(0.2f, 0.2f, 0.2f); renderer.model_enemy_infiltrator.render(renderer.testShader,GL20.GL_TRIANGLES); renderer.testShader.end(); } } }

  • Very slow direct3D texture sampling

    - by __dominic
    Hi, So I'm writing a small game using Direct3D 9 and I'm using multitexturing for the terrain. All I'm doing is sampling 3 textures and a blend map and getting the overall color from the three textures based on the color channels from the blend map. Anyway, I am getting a massive frame rate drop when I sample more than 1 texture, I'm going from 120+ fps to just under 50. This is the HLSL code responsible for the slow down: float3 ground = tex2D(GroundTex, multiTex).rgb; float3 stone = tex2D(StoneTex, multiTex).rgb; float3 grass = tex2D(GrassTex, multiTex).rgb; float3 blend = tex2D(BlendMapTex, blendMap).rgb; Am I doing it wrong ? If anyone has any info or tips about texture sampling or anything, that would be nice. Thanks.

  • RadCaptcha for ASP.NET AJAX audio feature available in Q1 2010

    Now that the Q1 2010 release is here, I want to bring your attention to a cool new feature in our RadCaptcha control for ASP.NET AJAX - audio support. Head on over to our online demos to see the feature in action. Enabling this on an existing CAPTCHA is easy - you just need to set the CaptchaImage-EnableCaptchaAudio property to true. Adding this feature to your site will allow blind or partially sighted people to use it as well. The audio support presents some very interesting possibilities for people who like to customize things. For example, you can replace the original audio files that come with the control (stored in the ~/App_Data/RadCaptcha/ folder in your web application) and add some custom ones - instead of hearing simply "alpha", you can make the control ask "enter the third letter in the word boat". You can also make it speak in ...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • How to get rid of the orange highlight in Unity?

    - by user74660
    I've installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and I'm using Unity. I also installed Adwaita theme and Elementary icons. Everything is cool. Highlightings are blue, as I want them to be, but there are some places where the default orange color remains: When clicking on Workspace Switcher, the borders of the current or the selected workspace are still orange. When dragging a window to the edges of the screen, the highlight effect for the Snap Window feature is still orange as well. All other highlights are blue, according to the Adwaita theme. So, how can I get rid of those two mentioned orange highlights and turn them into blue, following the Adwaita color theme? Thanks for your attention. brunces

  • Rendering transparent textures in directX

    - by Vibhore Tanwer
    I am working with a directX application with WPF, I am facing a problem with videos and images that contains transparent pixels, I have to draw a color in background an then a video/image over it. What I expect is background color should be visible while playing video only non transparent pixels should be visible but what I get is a black background behind the video. I am using following settings on device to achieve alpha blending : device.RenderState.SourceBlend = Blend.SourceAlpha; device.RenderState.DestinationBlend = Blend.InvSourceAlpha; device.RenderState.AlphaBlendEnable = true; What am I missing here? What is the best approach to handle transparent videos? Any help will be of great value to me.

  • SpriteBatch.Begin() making my model not render correctly

    - by manning18
    I was trying to output some debug information using DrawString when I noticed my model suddenly was being rendered like it was inside-out (like the culling had been disabled or something) and the texture maps weren't applied I commented out the DrawString method until I only had SpriteBatch.Begin() and .End() and that was enough to cause the model rendering corruption - when I commented those calls out the model rendered correctly What could this be a symptom of? I've stripped it down to the barest of code to isolate the problem and this is what I noticed. Draw code below (as stripped down as possible) GraphicsDevice.Clear(Color.LightGray); foreach (ModelMesh mesh in TIEAdvanced.Meshes) { foreach (Effect effect in mesh.Effects) { if (effect is BasicEffect) ((BasicEffect)effect).EnableDefaultLighting(); effect.CurrentTechnique.Passes[0].Apply(); } } spriteBatch.Begin(); spriteBatch.DrawString(spriteFont, "Camera Position: " + cameraPosition.ToString(), new Vector2(10, 10), Color.Blue); spriteBatch.End(); GraphicsDevice.DepthStencilState = DepthStencilState.Default; TIEAdvanced.Draw(Matrix.CreateScale(0.025f), viewMatrix, projectionMatrix);

  • why are my players drawn top the side of my viewport

    - by Jetbuster
    Following this admittedly brilliant and clean 2d camera class I have a camera on each player, and it works for multiplayer and i've divided the screen into two sections for split screen by giving each camera a viewport. However in the game it looks like this I'm not sure if thats their position relative to the screen or what The relevant gameScreen code, the makePlayers is setup so it could theoretically work for up to 4 players private void makePlayers() { int rowCount = 1; if (NumberOfPlayers > 2) rowCount = 2; players = new Player[NumberOfPlayers]; for (int i = 0; i < players.Length; i++) { int xSize = GameRef.Window.ClientBounds.Width / 2; int ySize = GameRef.Window.ClientBounds.Height / rowCount; int col = i % rowCount; int row = i / rowCount; int xPoint = 0 + xSize * row; int yPoint = 0 + ySize * col; Viewport viewport = new Viewport(xPoint, yPoint, xSize, ySize); Vector2 playerPosition = new Vector2(viewport.TitleSafeArea.X + viewport.TitleSafeArea.Width / 2, viewport.TitleSafeArea.Y + viewport.TitleSafeArea.Height / 2); players[i] = new Player(playerPosition, playerSprites[i], GameRef, viewport); } //players[1].Keyboard = true; } public override void Draw(GameTime gameTime) { base.Draw(gameTime); foreach (Player player in players) { GraphicsDevice.Viewport = player.PlayerCamera.ViewPort; GameRef.spriteBatch.Begin(SpriteSortMode.Immediate, BlendState.AlphaBlend, SamplerState.PointClamp, null, null, null, player.PlayerCamera.Transform); map.Draw(GameRef.spriteBatch); // Draw the Player player.Draw(GameRef.spriteBatch); // Draw UI screen elements GraphicsDevice.Viewport = Viewport; ControlManager.Draw(GameRef.spriteBatch); GameRef.spriteBatch.End(); } } the player's initialize and draw methods are like so internal void Initialize() { this.score = 0; this.angle = (float)(Math.PI * 0 / 180);//Start sprite at it's default rotation int width = utils.scaleInt(picture.Width, imageScale); int height = utils.scaleInt(picture.Height, imageScale); this.hitBox = new HitBox(new Vector2(centerPos.X - width / 2, centerPos.Y - height / 2), width, height, Color.Black, game.Window.ClientBounds); playerCamera.Initialize(); } #region Methods public void Draw(SpriteBatch spriteBatch) { //Console.WriteLine("Hitbox: X({0}),Y({1})", hitBox.Points[0].X, hitBox.Points[0].Y); //Console.WriteLine("Image: X({0}),Y({1})", centerPos.X, centerPos.Y); Vector2 orgin = new Vector2(picture.Width / 2, picture.Height / 2); hitBox.Draw(spriteBatch); utils.DrawCrosshair(spriteBatch, Position, game.Window.ClientBounds, Color.Red); spriteBatch.Draw(picture, Position, null, Color.White, angle, orgin, imageScale, SpriteEffects.None, 0.1f); } as I said I think I'm gonna need to do something with the render position but I'm to entirely sure what or how it would be elegant to say the least

  • Movie Poster Colors Over Time

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
    This spectrograph-like image records tens of thousands of movie posters over the course of a century, showing a steady shift towards posters that emphasize black, purple, and blue color tones. It’s a neat look at how the color tastes of an entire industry shift over time. Vijay Pandurangan had a disagreement with a friend about whether or not movie posters were becoming darker/bluer over time. Rather than simply agree to disagree, he whipped up a piece of code that downloaded and analyzed thousands of movie posters proving that, in fact, there was a slow and steady shift towards darker and bluer posters. Hit up the link below to see the interactive version (and larger!) version of his infographic as well as his explanation of the process and the source code. • Kubuntu 12.04: Change login screen background?

    - by drezabek
    I am having trouble changing my login screen background. I can select the default wall paper, the Kde-default one, but when ever I select my own custom wallpaper, there is no image, just a solid color. Normally, I would just ignore it, but the thing that bugs me is that this is a fresh install of Kubuntu 12.04 64bit, and the OS before this one, the one I overwrote, I had no trouble using the exact same image as the background... Settings In the System Settings application, Login Screen settings, Background tab, enable background, Under "Background", selected Picture, under options, selected Position: Scaled. Colors: Single Color. Blending: No Blending.

  • Highlighting new rows in ADF Table

    - by Sireesha Pinninti
    About This article explains how to hightlight newly inserted rows in an ADF Table without writing any extra java/javascript code.IntroductionSometimes we may wish to give more clarification to the end user by differentiating between newly inserted rows and the existing rows(i.e the rows from DB) in a table by highlighting new rows in different color as in the figure shown below. SolutionWe can achieve the same by giving following EL to inlineStyle property of every column inside af:table: #{row.row.entities[0].entityState == 0?'background-color:#307D7E;':''}ExplanationHere is the explanation for row.row.entities[0].entityState given inside EL which returns the state of the row(i.e, New, Modified, Unmodified, Initialized etc.)row - Refers to a tree node binding(instance of FacesCtrlHierNodeBinding) at runtimerow.row - Refers to an instance of row that the tree node is based onrow.row.entities[0] - Gets the Entity row at zeroth index. In most of the cases, the table will be based on single entity. If your table is based on multiple entities then the index needs to be given accordingly.row.row.entities[0].entityState - Gets Entity Object's current Entity-state in the transaction.(0 - New, Modified - 2, Unmodified - 1, Initialized - -1,  etc.,)

  • How can a programmer refine their skills in non-visual ways?

    - by Martin Josefsson
    I feel like when I am not writing, I am reading. When I come home from my programming job I write and read software and about software. The problem is though, both reading and writing requires my eyes to be focused. That doesn't work when I'm biking, cooking shopping for groceries. Sometime I use text-to-speech programs to listen to blogs, but I feel like there could be more. What ways can a software developer learn more without requiring eye focus? How to blind coders learn the craft?

  • fast java2d translucency

    - by mdriesen
    I'm trying to draw a bunch of translucent circles on a Swing JComponent. This isn't exactly fast, and I was wondering if there is a way to speed it up. My custom JComponent has the following paintComponent method: public void paintComponent(Graphics g) { Rectangle view = g.getClipBounds(); VolatileImage image = createVolatileImage(view.width, view.height); Graphics2D buffer = image.createGraphics(); // translate to camera location buffer.translate(-cx, -cy); // renderables contains all currently visible objects for(Renderable r : renderables) { r.paint(buffer); } g.drawImage(image.getSnapshot(), view.x, view.y, this); } The paint method of my circles is as follows: public void paint(Graphics2D graphics) { graphics.setPaint(paint); graphics.fillOval(x, y, radius, radius); } The paint is just an rgba color with a < 255: Color(int r, int g, int b, int a) It works fast enough for opaque objects, but is there a simple way to speed this up for translucent ones?

  • Some help understanding and modifying a 2D shader

    - by electroflame
    I have a similar question as the one posed here, except that I don't wish to use a 1D Color Palette. I simply wish to have it display 1 color of my choosing (red, for example). I plan to use this as a "shield" effect for a 2D ship. I also wish to understand how it works a little bit better, as I'll be the first to admit that shaders in general are not my strongest suit. I'm not asking for an overview of HLSL (as that is too broad of a subject), just an explanation of how this shader works, and the best way to implement it in a 2D game. Code examples would be ideal (even if they are theoretical) but if the answer is explained well enough, I might be able to manage with plain old text. This is also in XNA 4.0. Thanks in advance.

  • Collaborative Whiteboard using WebSocket in GlassFish 4 - Text/JSON and Binary/ArrayBuffer Data Transfer (TOTD #189)

    - by arungupta
    This blog has published a few blogs on using JSR 356 Reference Implementation (Tyrus) as its integrated in GlassFish 4 promoted builds. TOTD #183: Getting Started with WebSocket in GlassFish TOTD #184: Logging WebSocket Frames using Chrome Developer Tools, Net-internals and Wireshark TOTD #185: Processing Text and Binary (Blob, ArrayBuffer, ArrayBufferView) Payload in WebSocket TOTD #186: Custom Text and Binary Payloads using WebSocket One of the typical usecase for WebSocket is online collaborative games. This Tip Of The Day (TOTD) explains a sample that can be used to build such games easily. The application is a collaborative whiteboard where different shapes can be drawn in multiple colors. The shapes drawn on one browser are automatically drawn on all other peer browsers that are connected to the same endpoint. The shape, color, and coordinates of the image are transfered using a JSON structure. A browser may opt-out of sharing the figures. Alternatively any browser can send a snapshot of their existing whiteboard to all other browsers. Take a look at this video to understand how the application work and the underlying code. The complete sample code can be downloaded here. The code behind the application is also explained below. The web page (index.jsp) has a HTML5 Canvas as shown: <canvas id="myCanvas" width="150" height="150" style="border:1px solid #000000;"></canvas> And some radio buttons to choose the color and shape. By default, the shape, color, and coordinates of any figure drawn on the canvas are put in a JSON structure and sent as a message to the WebSocket endpoint. The JSON structure looks like: { "shape": "square", "color": "#FF0000", "coords": { "x": 31.59999942779541, "y": 49.91999053955078 }} The endpoint definition looks like: @WebSocketEndpoint(value = "websocket",encoders = {FigureDecoderEncoder.class},decoders = {FigureDecoderEncoder.class})public class Whiteboard { As you can see, the endpoint has decoder and encoder registered that decodes JSON to a Figure (a POJO class) and vice versa respectively. The decode method looks like: public Figure decode(String string) throws DecodeException { try { JSONObject jsonObject = new JSONObject(string); return new Figure(jsonObject); } catch (JSONException ex) { throw new DecodeException("Error parsing JSON", ex.getMessage(), ex.fillInStackTrace()); }} And the encode method looks like: public String encode(Figure figure) throws EncodeException { return figure.getJson().toString();} FigureDecoderEncoder implements both decoder and encoder functionality but thats purely for convenience. But the recommended design pattern is to keep them in separate classes. In certain cases, you may even need only one of them. On the client-side, the Canvas is initialized as: var canvas = document.getElementById("myCanvas");var context = canvas.getContext("2d");canvas.addEventListener("click", defineImage, false); The defineImage method constructs the JSON structure as shown above and sends it to the endpoint using websocket.send(). An instant snapshot of the canvas is sent using binary transfer with WebSocket. The WebSocket is initialized as: var wsUri = "ws://localhost:8080/whiteboard/websocket";var websocket = new WebSocket(wsUri);websocket.binaryType = "arraybuffer"; The important part is to set the binaryType property of WebSocket to arraybuffer. This ensures that any binary transfers using WebSocket are done using ArrayBuffer as the default type seem to be blob. The actual binary data transfer is done using the following: var image = context.getImageData(0, 0, canvas.width, canvas.height);var buffer = new ArrayBuffer(image.data.length);var bytes = new Uint8Array(buffer);for (var i=0; i<bytes.length; i++) { bytes[i] = image.data[i];}websocket.send(bytes); This comprehensive sample shows the following features of JSR 356 API: Annotation-driven endpoints Send/receive text and binary payload in WebSocket Encoders/decoders for custom text payload In addition, it also shows how images can be captured and drawn using HTML5 Canvas in a JSP. How could this be turned in to an online game ? Imagine drawing a Tic-tac-toe board on the canvas with two players playing and others watching. Then you can build access rights and controls within the application itself. Instead of sending a snapshot of the canvas on demand, a new peer joining the game could be automatically transferred the current state as well. Do you want to build this game ? I built a similar game a few years ago. Do somebody want to rewrite the game using WebSocket APIs ? :-) Many thanks to Jitu and Akshay for helping through the WebSocket internals! Here are some references for you: JSR 356: Java API for WebSocket - Specification (Early Draft) and Implementation (already integrated in GlassFish 4 promoted builds) Subsequent blogs will discuss the following topics (not necessary in that order) ... • XNA GameTime TotalGameTime slower than real time

    - by robasaurus
    I have set-up an empty test project consisting of a System.Diagnostics.Stopwatch and this in the draw method: spriteBatch.DrawString(font, gameTime.TotalGameTime.TotalSeconds.ToString(), new Vector2(100, 100), Color.White); spriteBatch.DrawString(font, stopwatch.Elapsed.TotalSeconds.ToString(), new Vector2(100, 200), Color.White); The GameTime.TotalGameTime displayed is slower than the stop watch (by about 5 seconds per minute) even though GameTime.IsRunningSlowly is always false, why is this? The reason this is an issue is because I have a server which uses stopwatch and it is faster than my client game. For instance my client notifies the server it has dropped a mine which explodes in one minute. Because the stopwatch is faster the server state explodes the mine before the client and they are out of sync. I don't want to have to notify the client when the server explodes it as this would use unnecessary bandwidth.

  • Why does unity obj import flip my x coordinate?

    - by milkplus
    When I import my wavefront obj model into unity and then draw lines over it with the same coordinates in the obj file, the x coordinate is negated. I don't see any option in the importer that might be doing that. And I'm using the same localToWorldMatrix and the same coordinate data in the .obj file. Hmmm GL.PushMatrix(); GL.MultMatrix(transform.localToWorldMatrix); CreateMaterial(); lineMaterial.SetPass(0); GL.Color(new Color(0, 1, 0)); GL.Begin(GL.LINES); GL.Vertex(p1); GL.Vertex(p2); GL.Vertex(p2); GL.Vertex(p3); //... • Best way to determine surface normal for a group of pixels?

    - by Paul Renton
    One of my current endeavors is creating a 2D destructible terrain engine for iOS Cocos2D (See https://github.com/crebstar/PWNDestructibleTerrain ). It is in an infant stages no doubt, but I have made significant progress since starting a couple weeks ago. However, I have run into a bit of a performance road block with calculating surface normals. Note: For my destructible terrain engine, an alpha of 0 is considered to not be solid ground. The method posted below works just great given small rectangles, such as n < 30. Anything above 30 causes a dip in the frame rate. If you approach 100x100 then you might as well read a book while the sprite attempts to traverse the terrain. At the moment this is the best I can come up with for altering the angle on a sprite as it roams across terrain (to get the angle for a sprite's orientation just take dot product of 100 * normal * (1,0) vector). -(CGPoint)getAverageSurfaceNormalAt:(CGPoint)pt withRect:(CGRect)area { float avgX = 0; float avgY = 0; ccColor4B color = ccc4(0, 0, 0, 0); CGPoint normal; float len; for (int w = area.size.width; w >= -area.size.width; w--) { for (int h = area.size.height; h >= -area.size.height; h--) { CGPoint pixPt = ccp(w + pt.x, h + pt.y); if ([self pixelAt:pixPt colorCache:&color]) { if (color.a != 0) { avgX -= w; avgY -= h; } // end inner if } // end outer if } // end inner for } // end outer for len = sqrtf(avgX * avgX + avgY * avgY); if (len == 0) { normal = ccp(avgX, avgY); } else { normal = ccp(avgX/len, avgY/len); } // end if return normal; } // end get My problem is I have sprites that require larger rectangles in order for their movement to look realistic. I considered doing a cache of all surface normals, but this lead to issues of knowing when to recalculate the surface normals and these calculations also being quite expensive (also how large should the blocks be?). Another smaller issue is I don't know how to properly treat the case when length is = 0. So I am stuck... Any advice from the community would be greatly appreciated! Is my method the best possible one? Or should I rethink the algorithm? I am new to game development and always looking to learn new tips and tricks.

  • Drawing Shape in DebugView (Farseer)

    - by keyvan kazemi
    As the title says, I need to draw a shape/polygon in Farseer using debugview. I have this piece of code which converts a Texture to polygon: //load texture that will represent the tray trayTexture = Content.Load<Texture2D>("tray"); //Create an array to hold the data from the texture uint[] data = new uint[trayTexture.Width * trayTexture.Height]; //Transfer the texture data to the array trayTexture.GetData(data); //Find the vertices that makes up the outline of the shape in the texture Vertices verts = PolygonTools.CreatePolygon(data, trayTexture.Width, false); //Since it is a concave polygon, we need to partition it into several smaller convex polygons _list = BayazitDecomposer.ConvexPartition(verts); Vector2 vertScale = new Vector2(ConvertUnits.ToSimUnits(1)); foreach (Vertices verti in _list) { verti.Scale(ref vertScale); } tray = BodyFactory.CreateCompoundPolygon(MyWorld, _list, 10); Now in DebugView I guess I have to use "DrawShape" method which requires: DrawShape(Fixture fixture, Transform xf, Color color) My question is how can I get the variables needed for this method, namely Fixture and Transform?
