  • New hire expectations... (Am I being unreasonable?)

    I work for a very small custom software shop. We currently consist me and my boss. My boss is an old FoxPro DOS developer and OOP makes him uncomfortable. He is planning on taking a back seat in the next few years to hopefully enjoy a “partial retirement”. I will be taking over the day to day operations and we are now desperately looking for more help. We tried Monster.com, Dice.com, and others a few years ago when we started our search. We had no success. We have tried outsourcing overseas (total disaster), hiring kids right out of college (mostly a disaster but that’s where I came from), interns (good for them, not so good for us) and hiring laid off “experienced” developers (there was a reason they were laid off). I have heard hiring practices discussed on podcasts, blogs, etc... and have tried a few. The “Fizz Buzz” test was a good one. One kid looked physically ill before he finally gave up. I think my problem is that I have grown so much as a developer since I started here that I now have a high standard. I hear/read very intelligent people podcasts and blogs and I know that there are lots of people out there that can do the job. I don’t want to settle for less than a “good” developer. Perhaps my expectations are unreasonable. I expect any good developer (entry level or experienced) to be billable (at least paying their own wage) in under one month. I expect any good developer to be able to be productive (at least dangerous) in any language or technology with only a few days of research/training. I expect any good developer to be able to take a project from initial customer request to completion with little or no help from others. Am I being unreasonable? What constitutes a valuable developer? What should be expected of an entry level developer? What should be expected of an experienced developer? I realize that everyone is different but there has to be some sort of expectations standard, right? I have been giving the test project below to potential canidates to weed them out. Good idea? Too much? Too little? Please let me know what you think. Thanks. Project ID: T00001 Description: Order Entry System Deadline: 1 Week Scope The scope of this project is to develop a fully function order entry system. Screen/Form design must be user friendly and promote efficient data entry and modification. User experience (Navigation, Screen/Form layouts, Look and Feel…) is at the developer’s discretion. System may be developed using any technologies that conform to the technical and system requirements. Deliverables Complete source code Database setup instructions (Scripts or restorable backup) Application installation instructions (Installer or installation procedure) Any necessary documentation Technical Requirements Server Platform – Windows XP / Windows Server 2003 / SBS Client Platform – Windows XP Web Browser (If applicable) – IE 8 Database – At developer’s discretion (Must be a relational SQL database.) Language – At developer’s discretion All data must be normalized. (+) All data must maintain referential integrity. (++) All data must be indexed for optimal performance. System must handle concurrency. System Requirements Customer Maintenance Customer records must have unique ID. Customer data will include Name, Address, Phone, etc. User must be able to perform all CRUD (Create, Read, Update, and Delete) operations on the Customer table. User must be able to enter a specific Customer ID to edit. User must be able to pull up a sortable/queryable search grid/utility to find a customer to edit. Validation must be performed prior to database commit. Customer record cannot be deleted if the customer has an order in the system. (++) Inventory Maintenance Part records must have unique ID. Part data will include Description, Price, UOM (Unit of Measure), etc. User must be able to perform all CRUD operations on the part table. User must be able to enter a specific Part ID to edit. User must be able to pull up a sortable/queryable search grid/utility to find a part to edit. Validation must be performed prior to database commit. Part record cannot be deleted if the part has been used in an order. (++) Order Entry Order records must have a unique auto-incrementing key (Order Number). Order data must be split into a header/detail structure. (+) Order can contain an infinite number of detail records. Order header data will include Order Number, Customer ID (++), Order Date, Order Status (Open/Closed), etc. Order detail data will include Part Number (++), Quantity, Price, etc. User must be able to perform all CRUD operations on the order tables. User must be able to enter a specific Order Number to edit. User must be able to pull up a sortable/queryable search grid/utility to find an order to edit. User must be able to print an order form from within the order entry form. Validation must be performed prior to database commit. Reports Customer Listing – All Customers in the system. Inventory Listing – All parts in the system. Open Order Listing – All open orders in system. Customer Order Listing – All orders for specific customer. All reports must include sorts and filter functions where applicable. Ex. Customer Listing by range of Customer IDs. Open Order Listing by date range.

  • Having Textmate warn me when writing to a file that was modified since Textmate last read it

    Scenario: I open a file, I edit it. After I began editing, the file is modified by another program. Finally, I save the file. In that case, Vim would provide that helpful warning: WARNING: The file has been changed since reading it Do you really want to write to it (y/n)? But Textmate will overwrite the file silently, which can result in unpleasant data loss (in my case, a de facto revert on Git). How can I prevent that?

  • Excel: Cell Value as Excel Document Metadata Property

    I know you can add custom Document Properties in Excel 2007. see: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel/HA100475241033.aspx#5 But I thought there was a way to pull a value from a cell as a custom metadata property without code. Maybe I'm searching for it with the wrong terminology. Maybe it has to be done as a Named Range. I know this can be done. Anyone know how?

  • How can I restart a service designed to run under supervise

    I have written a service designed to run under daemontools supervise. Because the run script refreshes a source code repository: git pull pod_server # serve up docs on source code via the web I desire for the script to restart every 5 minutes. The manpage for svc says that it applies all options to the service, so I thought this would work in cron: */5 * * * * svc -du etc/pod_server but it does not seem to be refreshing to source code repo with new pushes

  • Using more recent kernel for Xen Dom0 in production.

    Does anyone have experience running Xen dom0 on a more recent kernel than the stock 2.6.18? What host distro are you running? What release of Xen (or hg/git changeset)? What set of patches are you using on kernel source? (Has anyone got the pvops dom0 stuff working in production or is it better to stick with something like the SUSE patches? Any other tips and tricks to running a more recent kernel version as dom0 would be helpful.

    I wish to use vagrant and possibly VeeWee to construct and maintain virtual machines to automate some testing of servers etc. I am having problems getting them up and running on windows. Is there any are there any takes-nothing-for-granted setup blog posts or instructions anywhere? I live in a Microsoft world so all this Ruby/Git is new (and exciting!) to me but it does mean that I could do with everything being spelled out to me in excruciating detail! Cheers

  • Synchronize large objects to S3 efficiently

    I need to synchronize about 30GB of git repositories to S3. These repos may contain some very large pack files, on the rough order of 2GB. I know that S3 has recently added support for large objects, and has new APIs that allow the objects to be uploaded as several parallel chunks. Is there a good command-line tool for Linux that allows me to efficiently synchronize large objects with S3 in a fashion similar to s3sync?

    My team is currently looking into hosting for RoR apps, and we're considering RailsPlayground, Linode and SliceHost. We haven't found anyone recommending rails playground, and web of trust seems to caution against it - http://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/railsplayground.com I like the fact that they give you a sourcerepo account for free to host and track git repos, etc. The Questions: Is there any reason not to go with RailsPlayground? Have you had any negative experiences with RailsPlayground? (Feel free to share positives as well) Thanks!

  • Is it important to reboot Linux after a kernel update?

    I have a few production Fedora and Debian webservers that host our sites as well as user shell accounts (used for git vcs work, some screen+irssi sessions, etc). Occasionally a new kernel update will come down the pipeline in yum/apt-get, and I was wondering if most of the fixes are severe enough to warrant a reboot, or if I can apply the fixes sans reboot. Our main development server currently has 213 days of uptime, and I wasn't sure if it was insecure to run such an older kernel.

  • SSH dns issue giving break-in error

    Address ..*.* maps to ec2---*-*.compute-1.amazonaws.com, but this does not map back to the address - POSSIBLE BREAK-IN ATTEMPT! I keep getting this when I try to log-in to my remote server. I have it set for key authentication and when this error comes through, I still have to push through the password. I want to use this for automated Git pulls, and I can't have this kind of error message. anybody know what is going on here and how to fix it?

    I'm searching for something like: tcpdump -p PID # But tcpdump does not know the PID or lsof -i --continuous # But lsof just runs and exits, no «live logging» to log which connections an application opens. In my case, I want to find out to which port git connects when committing. This happens in a fraction of a second, so I cannot use lsof. If there is a lot of traffic, filtering by PID or process name would be useful.

    Hello, I'm settings up nginx to serve Mercurial repositories. It works when not using basic authentication at all, or when I use basic authentication all over. What I want to do is to just use basic auth on POST requests, so anyone have pull access, but only authenticated users can push. I tried the following, if ($request_method = POST) { auth_basic "Restricted"; auth_basic_user_file /path/to/userfile } However it complains about "auth_basic directive is not allowed here". How can I solve this?

  • Printing barcode labels

    I am trying to print barcodes for a library. I have generated a list of sequential numbers and copied them into Word 2003. I want Library name, barcode font, barcode number printed in an Avery 5160 label sheet. I can get it to work by going to tools, letters and mailing, Envelopes and Labels, labels tab and type in what data I want. I don't see how I can pull this data from the list in the word document rather than just what I type.

  • Missing the "add tab group to favorites " option in IE8

    I have internet options selected for quick tabs and tab groups in setting, IE8 WIndows XP. I can open a list of favorites from the menu using the blue arrow as a tab group. I can then use the quick tabs button to show the groups open. However, I do not have the "add tab group to favorites" option in the pull down menu for favotites at the Favorite Bar. Is this a Vista feature only?

  • Mercurial (hg) commit only certain files

    Hi I'm trying to commit only certain files with hg. Because of of hg having auto-add whenever I try to commit a change it wants to commit all files. But I don't want that because certain files are not "ready" yet. There is hg commit -I thefile.foo, but this is only for one file. The better way for me would be if I can turn off auto-add as in git. Is this possible? thx

    Varnish Security main.vcl contains # clear all internal variables include "/etc/varnish/security/build/variables.vcl"; and # fallthrough: clear all internal variables on security.vcl_recv exit include "/etc/varnish/security/build/variables.vcl"; but /etc/varnish/security/build/variables.vcl is not included into the git. I commented it out, and it is working fine but where can I get that file?

  • rsync not writing files

    I'm trying to setup rsync to backup a remote directory to my local drive. I cd to the directory that I want to pull the files to, then I enter: rsync -vrtW [email protected]:~/public_html I enter the password then it starts running. I get all the files listed, but none of them actually transfer. What am I missing? Thanks

  • How to reverse proxy with or without trailing slash

    I have a apache web server that needs to reverse proxy a site. So example.com/test/ or example.com/test pull from the same other webserver. I have setup a reverse proxy for the one without the trailing slash like this: ProxyPass /test http://othersite.com/test ProxyPassReverse /testhttp://othersite.com/test But it doesn't work with a trailing slash. Any Ideas? I have tried redirecting from /test/ to /test with no luck. Thanks.

  • windows 7: Can I make it automatically download updates during one period and install them in anothe

    When Windows 7 is configured to automatically update at a certain time (say Friday 5pm), is that also when it tries to download updates, or does it pull in the updates throughout the week, and only installs them at the update time? UPDATE: So I actually want the machines to download during one set of times (9am-3pm Mon-Fri), but install during another set of times (e.g. 5pm Friday). Is there a way to achieve this?
