• Dividing a 9x9 2d array into 9 sub-grids (like in sudoku)? (C++)

  I'm trying to code a sudoku solver, and the way I attempted to do so was to have a 9x9 grid of pointers that hold the address of "set" objects that posses either the solution or valid possible values. I was able to go through the array with 2 for loops, through each column first and then going to the next row and repeating. However, I'm having a hard time imagining how I would designate which sub-grid (or box, block etc) a specific cell belongs to. My initial impression was to have if statements in the for loops, such as if row < 2 (rows start at 0) & col < 2 then we're in the 1st block, but that seems to get messy. Would there be a better way of doing this?

• Ping remote server and wait to get data

  Hi I'm building my first application for android and I've reached a point where I can't find a solution even have no idea what to search for in Google. So the problem: I am pinging a remote server with GET request through the application passing some parameters like file_id. Then the server gives back confirmation if the file exists or error otherwise, both in plain text. The error string is $$$ERROR$$$. Actually the confirmation is JSON string that holds the path to the file. If the file doesn't exists on the server it generated the error message and start downloading the file and processing it which normally takes 10-30 seconds. What would be the best way to check if the file is ready for download? I have DownloadFile class that extends AsyncTask but before I reach the point to download the file I need the URL which is dependant on the previous request which is in the main class in the UI thread.   I have this code block here and i need to make sure the rankedPlayersWaitingForMatch is synchronized between threads properly. I was going to use synchronize but that i don't think will work here because of the variable being used in the if statement. I read online about final Lock lock = new ReentrantLock(); but I am a bit confused on how to use it in this case properly with the try/finally block. Can I get a quick example? All the subsequent video object are added to the right of the centered object; 4) Total Video object, this object links to window two with the corresponding video of this object. This object is visually build out of the following sub parts:o 4.a) Thumb object (possible playing video thumb); 4.b) Reflection of the Thumb; 4.c) Textual Explanation of Thumb. 1) Video stream, this is the video stream coming from a external server streamed to the television (maybe up scaled) as 720p stream; 2) Advertisement, the type of advertisement shown overlaid on the video is based on previous settings in the video feed. This could mean that Admob, Adsense or a third party image plus URL could be shown. When the advertisement is selected trough navigation (it will highlight in a different color as a border around the advertisement. The color an thickness can be managed trough the application xml), when clicked a browser will open with the associated site (the application will be pushed to the background process, when the user is finished it will return to the app); 3) A back button, an image and navigational element. The location of the image comes from the application xml. The button is only shown when a cursor is moved (a button is pressed on the remote) it will highlight when selected and when pressed will forward the screen to the main window. When the main window is opened the video will be removed from cache and memory and cannot be start from the point it was exited. please give me your idea....

• TableView reloading problem

  Hi All, i am in a very serious problem of tableview reloading. i have two option in my tableview 1) show next 10 Results 2) show previos 10 results I wanna show only 50 results at a time in my table view. when table is populated with 50 results after that on pressing "show next 10 results" the results from 1-10 are removed and results from 51-60 are now displayed and hence i have the total results in my table view from 11-60. As the total # of results remain 50 hence i have the cells with their identifier from 1-50 and now they are not nil. So i also have to code in else block of the condition if(cell == nil) { } else{ Have to write the same code as in if. } Now my cells are properly reloading on clicking "show next 10" and on clicking "show previous 10" but the problem is that because of the code in else block my cells are also reloaded when the user scrolls the table-view. Kindly give some good suggestion what should i do to get out from this situation.

• Counting number of GC cleanups on an object

  How do I keep a count of the number of times that objects of a specific class (type?) are getting disposed in the lifetime of my application. Imagine I have a class A, now, I want to count how many times the objects of A get collected by the GC. I hope I am phrasing this right because I was asked this in an interview today and the answer I gave did not satisfy the interviewer. And this is what I imagine he was trying to ask. What I said was that one could keep a static field called count in the class A and increment it in the Finalize() call of that object. The answer he was expecting was something called a static block. I've never heard of this in .NET/C#. Can someone explain what's this static block?

• Using a named system semaphore as an event to trigger something in another process.

  I have a thread that runs all the time: private void DoSomeStuffThread() { Semaphore sem = new Semaphore(0, 3, "sem_DoStuff"); sem.WaitOne(); do { //do some stuff } while (sem.WaitOne()); } I want to be able to only execute the stuff in the do block when something from another process says so. I am trying to use the "sem_DoStuff" named system semaphore to allow this to happen. The code that gets executed in my other process: public string DoStuff() { try { Semaphore sem = Semaphore.OpenExisting("sem_DoStuff"); sem.Release(); } catch (Exception e) { return e.Message; } } So, the idea is that when DoStuff gets called, the semaphore gets released, and DoSomeStuffThread stops waiting, executes what is in the do block, and then waits for DoStuff again before it is getting called. But, when DoStuff gets called, I'm getting the exception 'No handle of the given name exists.'. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

  I'm trying to numerically sort data that's displayed in a UITableView. Before that I used such a sort descriptor: sortDescriptor = [[NSSortDescriptor alloc] initWithKey:@"name" ascending:YES selector:@selector(caseInsensitiveCompare:)]; now I'd like to use block to sort this numerically like this: sortDescriptor = [[NSSortDescriptor alloc] initWithKey:@"name" ascending:YES comparator:^NSComparisonResult(id obj1, id obj2) { return [((NSString *)obj1) compare:(NSString *)obj2 options:NSCaseInsensitiveSearch | NSNumericSearch]; }]; but it sorts the data incorectly causing conflict with section names in NSFetchedResultsController. So I tryed to immitate the old sorting with a comparator block - just to be sure that the problem is not caused by numeric comparison. The problem is that those lines: sortDescriptor = [[NSSortDescriptor alloc] initWithKey:@"name" ascending:YES comparator:^NSComparisonResult(id obj1, id obj2) { return [((NSString *)obj1) caseInsensitiveCompare:(NSString *)obj2]; }]; also cause the same error and I don't see why they won't sort the data in the same way the first method did... Any ideas?

• arg function not using URL alias

What I found was that on some of my pages, arg(0) was showing 'node' when the URL is actually 'tampa', and of course, arg(1) is showing the node ID. However, on other pages, such as my calendar, arg(0) is actually showing 'tampa' instead of 'node'. I have used this a lot in the past, and have never had this problem. Is there a reason why Drupal is disregarding my aliases on certain pages? If so, how can I fix it?

• remove/ignore float from outer div

  This may sound weird but i have some css which aligns mys divs. In one place i also use http://www.brunildo.org/test/img_center.html which centers images. Now i want my divs inside a larger div to go to another line if this one gets full. float: left seems to be the answer. The problem is it ruins my formatting. Including solution in the above link. I have this test code. If i remove the width and float it looks fine except it may take up too much space and not go to another line. I was thinking i could use float on an outerdiv and center the image within. However float: left is still breaking it. I can achieve this by using float: ... or display: inline-block. However, I'd also like it to be centered on the page, using margin: auto. The two approaches don't seem to be compatible. Is it possible to create such a shrink-wrapped, centered container, without adding a wrapper element?

• Optimizing NSNumber numberWithInt:

  I am profiling an iPhone app and I noticed a strange pattern. In a certain block of code that's called quite frequently... [item setQuadrant:[NSNumber numberWithInt:a]]; [item setIndex:[NSNumber numberWithInt:b]]; [item setTimestamp:[NSNumber numberWithInt:c]]; [item setState:[NSNumber numberWithInt:d]]; [item setCompletionPercentage:[NSNumber numberWithInt:e]]; [item setId_:[NSNumber numberWithInt:f]]; ...the first call to [NSNumber numberWithInt:] takes an inordinate amount of time, in the order of 10-15x that of the remaining calls. I've verified that the results are consistent if I shuffle the lines (the first line is always the slow one, by the same ratio). Is there something going on that I'm not aware of? Perhaps this happens because this block is inside a try/catch?

• Cant append "used" DOMObject in IE

Area is jQuery object. In other browsers (except IE) i get area with all needed categories, but in IE i get only new received categories(that just create DomObject), other old objects that keeped old DomObject not show. I know it possible make with innerHTML, but i wont keep DomObject, not text. Because DomObject keep many events. And it very hard for browser attach events for each DomObject after refresh area.

  I would like to know how can I read a file byte by byte then perform some operation every n bytes. for example: Say I have a file of size = 50 bytes, I want to divide it into blocks each of n bytes. Then each block is sent to a function for some operations to be done on those bytes. The blocks are to be created during the read process and sent to the function when the block reaches n bytes so that I don`t use much memory for storing all blocks. I want the output of the function to be written/appended on a new file. This is what I've reached to read, yet I don't know it it is right: fc = new JFileChooser(); File f = fc.getSelectedFile(); FileInputStream in = new FileInputStream(f); byte[] b = new byte[16]; in.read(b); I haven't done anything yet for the write process.

• Finding open contiguous blocks of time for every day of a month, fast

  I am working on a booking availability system for a group of several venues, and am having a hard time generating the availability of time blocks for days in a given month. This is happening server-side in PHP, but the concept itself is language agnostic -- I could be doing this in JS or anything else. Given a venue_id, month, and year (6/2012 for example), I have a list of all events occurring in that range at that venue, represented as unix timestamps start and end. This data comes from the database. I need to establish what, if any, contiguous block of time of a minimum length (different per venue) exist on each day. For example, on 6/1 I have an event between 2:00pm and 7:00pm. The minimum time is 5 hours, so there's a block open there from 9am - 2pm and another between 7pm and 12pm. This would continue for the 2nd, 3rd, etc... every day of June. Some (most) of the days have nothing happening at all, some have 1 - 3 events. The solution I came up with works, but it also takes waaaay too long to generate the data. Basically, I loop every day of the month and create an array of timestamps for each 15 minutes of that day. Then, I loop the time spans of events from that day by 15 minutes, marking any "taken" timeslot as false. Remaining, I have an array that contains timestamp of free time vs. taken time: //one day's array after processing through loops (not real timestamps) array( 12345678=>12345678, // <--- avail 12345878=>12345878, 12346078=>12346078, 12346278=>false, // <--- not avail 12346478=>false, 12346678=>false, 12346878=>false, 12347078=>12347078, // <--- avail 12347278=>12347278 ) Now I would need to loop THIS array to find continuous time blocks, then check to see if they are long enough (each venue has a minimum), and if so then establish the descriptive text for their start and end (i.e. 9am - 2pm). WHEW! By the time all this looping is done, the user has grown bored and wandered off to Youtube to watch videos of puppies; it takes ages to so examine 30 or so days. Is there a faster way to solve this issue? To summarize the problem, given time ranges t1 and t2 on day d, how can I determine the remaining time left in d that is longer than the minimum time block m. This data is assembled on demand via AJAX as the user moves between calendar months. Results are cached per-page-load, so if the user goes to July a second time, the data that was generated the first time would be reused. Any other details that would help, let me know. • Does any language have a while-else flow structure?

  Consider this flow structure which I happen to use often: if ( hasPosts() ) { while ( hasPosts() ) { displayNextPost(); } } else { displayNoPostsContent(); } Are there any programming languages which have an optional else clause for while, which is to be run if the while loop is never entered? Thus, the code above would become: while ( hasPosts() ) { displayNextPost(); } else { displayNoPostsContent(); } I find it interesting that many languages have the do-while construct (run the while code once before checking the condition) yet I have never seen while-else addressed. There is precedent for running an N block of code based on what was run in N-1 block, such as the try-catch construct. I wasn't sure whether to post here or on programmers.SE. If this question is more appropriate there, then please move it. Thanks.
