• Site Web Analytics not updating Sharepoint 2010

  If you facing the issue that the web Analytics Reports in SharePoint 2010 Central Administration is not updating data. When you go to your site > site settings > Site Web Analytics reports or Site Collection Analytics reports  You get old data as in the ribbon displayed "Data Last Updated: 12/13/2010 2:00:20 AM" Please insure that the following things are covered: Insure that Usage and Data Health Data Collection service is configured correctly. Log Collection Schedule is configured correctly Microsoft Sharepoint Foundation Usage Data Import and Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Usage Data Processing Timer jobs are configured to run at regular intervals One last important Timer job is the Web Analytics Trigger Workflows Timer Job insure that this timer job is enabled and scheduled to run at regular intervals (for each site that you need analytics for). After you have insured that the web analytics service configuration is working fine and the Usage Data Import job is importing the *.usage files from the ULS LOGS folder into the WSS_Logging database, and that all the required timer jobs are running as expected… wait for a day for the report to get updated… the report gets updated automatically at 2:00 am in the morning… and i could not find a way to control the schedule for this report update job. So be sure to wait for a day before giving up :)

• TechEd 2010 - New Orleans

  We're a little more than half way through TechEd 2010 in New Orleans and I am having a hard time finding interesting breakout sessions to attend.  Laura Chappell has completed all of her sessions, and Andy Malone is almost done.  Laura's sessions on Wireshark have been amazing.  Andy is always entertaining and informative.  I did sit through a session this afternoon on IPv6 that was interesting.  I will spend the final day in the Hands on Labs area working through some PowerShell, and Communication Server 14 labs.  The speakers for two of my breakouts had written interesting books.  I went to the conference bookstore to pick them up and found both to be sold out.  They did offer to ship the books to me with the TechEd 20 percent discount. I'm not real sure who thought it would be a good idea to hold a conference in June in New Orleans.  It has been HUMID.  On top of that TechEd 2011 will be in my hometown, Atlanta.

• Visual Studio 2010 Pro Power Tools Screencast

  Microsoft just released the Visual Studio 2010 Pro Power Tools extension and it is awesome. A summary of all the features can be found here and it is available in the Visual Studio Gallery here. There are a bunch of great features but, in my opinion, the best one is the replacement for the Add Reference dialog. This gives sub-string search capabilities as well as the ability to add multiple references without having to continually re-open the dialog. For this feature alone, you should install the Pro Power Tools right now. There are a few blogs posts that do a good job describing all the features but what I wanted to do here was to post a quick screencast (7 minutes) that shows the features that I think are really cool. I show most (but not all) of the features focusing on the ones I think are the best. • MSDN Live 2010 &ndash; Delivered : 24 sessions (4 x 6) on Visual Studio and Team Foundation Server

  We (Mikael Nitell and me) got a whole track on the Norwegian MSDN Live tour this year.  We did these as a pair, and covered 4 cities over 4 days, 6 sessions per day, taking 8 hours to come through it.  The Islandic volcano made the travels a bit rough, but we managed 6 flights out of 8. The first one had to go by van instead, 7-8 hour drive each way together with other MSDN Live presenters – a memorable tour! Oslo was the absolute top point.  We had to change hall to a bigger one. People were crowding, and even the big hall was packed!  The presentations were mostly based on demos, but we had a few slides as well.  They have been uploaded to my SkyDrive.  Info to aliens – some of the text may be Norwegian. • An Interview with JavaOne Rock Star Martijn Verburg

  An interview with JavaOne Rock Star Martijn Verburg, by yours truly, titled “Challenging the Diabolical Developer: A Conversation with JavaOne Rock Star Martijn Verburg,” is now up on otn/java. Verburg, one of the leading movers and shakers in the Java community, is well known for his ‘diabolical developer” talks at JavaOne where he uncovers some of the worst practices that Java developers are prone to. He mentions a few in the interview: * “A lack of communication: Software development is far more a social activity than a technical one; most projects fail because of communication issues and social dynamics, not because of a bad technical decision. Sadly, many developers never learn this lesson.* No source control: Some developers simply store code in local file systems and e-mail the code in order to integrate their changes; yes, this still happens.* Design-driven design: Some developers are inclined to cram every design pattern from the Gang of Four (GoF) book into their projects. Of course, by that stage, they've actually forgotten why they're building the software in the first place.” He points to a couple of core assumptions and confusions that lead to trouble: “One is that developers think that the JVM is a magic box that will clean up their memory and make their code run fast, as well as make them cups of coffee. The JVM does help in a lot of cases, but bad code can and will still lead to terrible results! The other trend is to try to force Java (the language) to do something it's not very good at, such as rapid Web development. So you get a proliferation of overly complex frameworks, libraries, and techniques trying to get around the fact that Java is a monolithic, statically typed, compiled, OO environment. It's not a Golden Hammer!” Verburg has many insightful things to say about how to keep a Java User Group (JUG) going, about the “Adopt a JSR” program, bugathons, and much more. • Sandcastle Help File Builder - October 2010 release

I am pleased to say that it incorporates the generic version of a fix, I originated that allows projects including Crystal Reports to be documented.Here is the relevant passage from the help file:"The default configuration for MRefBuilder has been updated to ignore the Crystal Reports licensing assembly (BusinessObjects.Licensing.KeycodeDecoder) if it fails to get resolved. This assembly does not appear to be available and ignoring it prevents projects that include Crystal Reports assemblies from failing and being unbuildable."There are many other fixes. Here are the release notes:IMPORTANT: On some systems, the content of the ZIP file is blocked and the installer may fail to run. • Changing the Default Windows Phone 7 Deployment Target In Visual Studio 2010

  After you download and install the January 2011 Windows Phone update, you will notice one annoying thing. The default deployment target for Windows Phone Projects in Visual Studio changes to Windows Phone 7 Device. Before the update, it defaulted to the Emulator. I found this extremely annoying as I’m more than likely going to test with the emulator before putting it on my actual device. Now to make things fair, Microsoft told you they were going to switch the default and even provided a solution, but you will have to check a tiny paragraph in the release notes. The good news is that its very easy to do: Simply navigate out to : %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Phone Tools\CoreCon See the folder named, “10.0”? Go ahead and delete it. Now, the folder will be completely empty and if you fire up Visual Studio 2010 you will see we are now defaulting to the Emulator again. In my opinion, this should have been left at Emulator. • How to force VS 2010 to skip "builds" of projects which haven't changed?

  Our product's solution has more than 100+ projects (500+ksloc of production code). Most of them are C# projects but we also have few using C++/CLI to bridge communication with native code. Rebuilding the whole solution takes several minutes. That's fine. If I want to rebuilt the solution I expect that it will really take some time. What is not fine is time needed to build solution after full rebuild. Imagine I used full rebuild and know without doing any changes to to the solution I press Build (F6 or Ctrl+Shift+B). Why it takes 35s if there was no change? In output I see that it started "building" of each project - it doesn't perform real build but it does something which consumes significant amount of time. That 35s delay is pain in the ass. Yes I can improve the time by not using build solution but only build project (Shift+F6). If I run build project on particular test project I'm currently working on it will take "only" 8+s. It requires me to run project build on correct project (the test project to ensure dependent tested code is build as well). At least ReSharper test runner correctly recognizes that only this single project must be build and rerunning test usually contains only 8+s compilation. My current coding Kata is: don't touch Ctrl+Shift+B. The test project build will take 8s even if I don't do any changes. The reason why it takes 8s is because it also "builds" dependencies = in my case it "builds" more than 20 projects but I made changes only to unit test or single dependency! I don't want it to touch other projects. Is there a way to simply tell VS to build only projects where some changes were done and projects which are dependent on changed ones (preferably this part as another build option)? I worry you will tell me that it is exactly what VS is doing but in MS way ... I want to improve my TDD experience and reduce the time of compilation (in TDD the compilation can happen twice per minute). To make this even more frustrated I'm working in a team where most of developers used to work on Java projects prior to joining this one. So you can imagine how they are pissed off when they must use VS in contrast to full incremental compilation in Java. I don't require incremental compilation of classes. I expect working incremental compilation of solutions. Especially in product like VS 2010 Ultimate which costs several thousands dollars. I really don't want to get answers like: Make a separate solution Unload projects you don't need etc. I can read those answers here. Those are not acceptable solutions. We're not paying for VS to do such compromises.

• JavaOne Latin America 2012 Trip Report

  JavaOne Latin America 2012 was held at the Transamerica Expo Center in Sao Paulo, Brazil on December 4-6. The conference was a resounding success with a great vibe, excellent technical content and numerous world class speakers. Some notable local and international speakers included Bruno Souza, Yara Senger, Mattias Karlsson, Vinicius Senger, Heather Vancura, Tori Wieldt, Arun Gupta, Jim Weaver, Stephen Chin, Simon Ritter and Henrik Stahl. Topics covered included the JCP/JUGs, Java SE 7, HTML 5/WebSocket, CDI, Java EE 6, Java EE 7, JSF 2.2, JMS 2, JAX-RS 2, Arquillian and JavaFX. Bruno Borges and I manned the GlassFish booth at the Java Pavilion on Tuesday and Webnesday. The booth traffic was decent and not too hectic. We met a number of GlassFish adopters including perhaps one of the largest GlassFish deployments in Brazil as well as some folks migrating to Java EE from Spring. We invited them to share their stories with us. We also talked with some key members of the local Java community. Tuesday evening we had the GlassFish party at the Tribeca Pub. The party was definitely a hit and we could have used a larger venue (this was the first time we had the GlassFish party in Brazil). Along with GlassFish enthusiasts, a number of Java community leaders were there. We met some of the same folks again at the JUG leader's party on Wednesday evening. On Thursday Arun Gupta, Bruno Borges and I ran a hands-on-lab on JAX-RS, WebSocket and Server-Sent Events (SSE) titled "Developing JAX-RS Web Applications Utilizing Server-Sent Events and WebSocket". This is the same Java EE 7 lab run at JavaOne San Francisco. The lab provides developers a first hand glipse of how an HTML 5 powered Java EE application might look like. We had an overflow crowd for the lab (at one point we had about twenty people standing) and the lab went very well. Give me a shout if you need help getting it up and running. I gave two solo talks following the lab. The first was on JMS 2 titled "What’s New in Java Message Service 2". This was essentially the same talk given by JMS 2 specification lead Nigel Deakin at JavaOne San Francisco. I talked about the JMS 2 simplified API, JMSContext injection, delivery delays, asynchronous send, JMS resource definition in Java EE 7, standardized configuration for JMS MDBs in EJB 3.2, mandatory JCA pluggability and the like. The session went very well, there was good Q & A and someone even told me this was the best session of the conference! Titled "JAX-RS 2: New and Noteworthy in the RESTful Web Services API" this was basically the same talk given by the specification leads Santiago Pericas-Geertsen and Marek Potociar at JavaOne San Francisco. I talked about the JAX-RS 2 client API, asyncronous processing, filters/interceptors, hypermedia support, server-side content negotiation and the like. The talk went very well and I got a few very kind complements afterwards. This time I got to check out a solid performance by local metal gig Republica at the legendary Manifesto Bar. I also wanted to see a Dio Tribute at the Blackmore but ran out of time and energy... Overall I enjoyed the conference/Sao Paulo and look forward to going to Brazil again next year!

• Talking JavaOne with Rock Star Kirk Pepperdine

  Kirk Pepperdine is not only a JavaOne Rock Star but a Java Champion and a highly regarded expert in Java performance tuning who works as a consultant, educator, and author. He is the principal consultant at Kodewerk Ltd. He speaks frequently at conferences and co-authored the Ant Developer's Handbook. In the rapidly shifting world of information technology, Pepperdine, as much as anyone, keeps up with what's happening with Java performance tuning. Pepperdine will participate in the following sessions: CON5405 - Are Your Garbage Collection Logs Speaking to You? BOF6540 - Java Champions and JUG Leaders Meet Oracle Executives (with Jeff Genender, Mattias Karlsson, Henrik Stahl, Georges Saab) HOL6500 - Finding and Solving Java Deadlocks (with Heinz Kabutz, Ellen Kraffmiller Martijn Verburg, Jeff Genender, and Henri Tremblay) I asked him what technological changes need to be taken into account in performance tuning. “The volume of data we're dealing with just seems to be getting bigger and bigger all the time,” observed Pepperdine. “A couple of years ago you'd never think of needing a heap that was 64g, but today there are deployments where the heap has grown to 256g and tomorrow there are plans for heaps that are even larger. Dealing with all that data simply requires more horse power and some very specialized techniques. In some cases, teams are trying to push hardware to the breaking point. Under those conditions, you need to be very clever just to get things to work -- let alone to get them to be fast. We are very quickly moving from a world where everything happens in a transaction to one where if you were to even consider using a transaction, you've lost." When asked about the greatest misconceptions about performance tuning that he currently encounters, he said, “If you have a performance problem, you should start looking at code at the very least and for that extra step, whip out an execution profiler. I'm not going to say that I never use execution profilers or look at code. What I will say is that execution profilers are effective for a small subset of performance problems and code is literally the last thing you should look at.And what is the most exciting thing happening in the world of Java today? “Interesting question because so many people would say that nothing exciting is happening in Java. Some might be disappointed that a few features have slipped in terms of scheduling. But I'd disagree with the first group and I'm not so concerned about the slippage because I still see a lot of exciting things happening. First, lambda will finally be with us and with lambda will come better ways.” For JavaOne, he is proctoring for Heinz Kabutz's lab. “I'm actually looking forward to that more than I am to my own talk,” he remarked. “Heinz will be the third non-Sun/Oracle employee to present a lab and the first since Oracle began hosting JavaOne. He's got a great message. He's spent a ton of time making sure things are going to work, and we've got a great team of proctors to help out. After that, getting my talk done, the Java Champion's panel session and then kicking back and just meeting up and talking to some Java heads."Finally, what should Java developers know that they currently do not know? “’Write Once, Run Everywhere’ is a great slogan and Java has come closer to that dream than any other technology stack that I've used. That said, different hardware bits work differently and as hard as we try, the JVM can't hide all the differences. Plus, if we are to get good performance we need to work with our hardware and not against it.   As with my JavaOne 2012: OpenJDK Edition post a while back (now updated to reflect the schedule of the talks), I find it convenient to have my JavaOne schedule ordered by subjects of interest. • How is WPF Data Binding using Object Data Source in Visual Studio 2010 done?

  This is probably mostly a question about how to use the VS 2010 IDE tools in a way the Microsofties didn't specifically intend. But since this is something I immediately tried without success. I have defined a .NET 4.0 WPF Application project with a simple class that looks like this: Public Class Class1 Public Property One As String = "OneString" Public Property Two As String = "TwoString" End Class I then defined it as an "Object Data Source" in VS2010, using the IDE's "Add New Data Source..." feature.   Just submitted my session abstracts for Ann Arbor's Day of .NET 2010.   Getting up to speed with .NET 3.5 -- Just in time for 4.0! Yes, C# 4.0 is just around the corner.  But if you haven't had the chance to use C# 3.5 extensively, this session will start from the ground up with the new features of 3.5.  We'll assume everyone is coming from C# 2.0.  This session will show you the details of extension methods, partial methods and more.  We'll also show you how LINQ -- Language Integrated Query -- can help decrease your development time and increase your code's readability.  If time permits, we'll look at some .NET 4.0 features, but the goal is to get you up to speed on .NET 3.5.   Go Ahead and Mock Me! When testing specific parts of your application, there can be a lot of external dependencies required to make your tests work.  Writing fake or mock objects that act as stand-ins for the real dependencies can waste a lot of time.  This is where mocking frameworks come in.  In this session, Patrick Steele will introduce you to Rhino Mocks, a popular mocking framework for .NET.  You'll see how a mocking framework can make writing unit tests easier and leads to less brittle unit tests.   Inversion of Control: Who's got control and why is it being inverted? • Illegal characters for SharePoint 2010 Content Type name

  Quick tip: you can’t include a backslash in the name of the SharePoint 2010 Content Type.  In fact, there are several illegal characters:  \  / : * ? " # % < > { } | ~ & , two consecutive periods (..), or special characters such as a tab. What, you didn’t know that after entering one of these characters in the name?  Is it because you saw this screen: Oh, that’s right….you need to turn off custom errors in the layouts folder…See this blog post for details and you’ll also need to turn off for the web application. Once you do that, you’ll see this: I wonder why the SharePoint team just doesn’t let the user know that the content type name contains illegal characters before the user hits the create button. • Modify Build Failure Work Item in TFS 2010 Build

  The default behaviour in TFS Team Build (all versions) is to create a bug work item when a build fails. This main benefit of this is that you get a work item for something that needs to be done, namely to fix the build!. When the developer responsible for the build failure has fixed the problem, he/she can associated that check-in with the work item that was created from the previous build failure. In TFS 2005/2008 you could modify the information in the created work item by changing some predefined properties in the TFSBuild.proj file:   <!-- WorkItemType The type of the work item created on a build failure. --> <WorkItemType>Bug</WorkItemType> <!-- WorkItemFieldValues Fields and values of the work item created on a build failure. Note: Use reference names for fields if you want the build to be resistant to field name changes. The hardest part of this is to actually find where this activity is located in the build process workflow. If you open the build definition in XAML you can just search for OpenWorkItem. If you use the designer you need to click your way down to the Catch section of the Try to Compile the Project sequence: To change the default values of the created work item, select the Created Work Item activity and look at the Properties window: Note the CustomFields property which is a dictionary with key (work item field name) and value. If you add custom fields to your work item you can add a value for it here by adding a new entry in the dictionary.
