  • R: How to update a package and keep it from reverting to the original?

    - by John
I want to upgrade the package ggplot2: library(ggplot2) packageDescription("ggplot2")["Version"] > 0.8.3 But the current version is 0.8.7. I tried update.packages(), which seemed to work OK. But it still returned older version 0.8.3. So I downloaded and installed the package source from Cran, which says 0.8.7 in the download page. I then install it via the GUI menu in R. It returns ** building package indices ... * DONE (ggplot2) I then run: packageDescription("ggplot2")["Version"] > 0.8.3 And still I have the older version! I don't know why this is not working, what's more I had already come across this problem before and solved it (I can't remember exactly what) but now it has gone back to the older version! What's the easiest way to keep packages like this updated automatically and not have them refer back to older packages?

  • can't explain NullPointerException

    - by John Pope
    In the following code, i have a method to get a Vector of persons with the same zodiac sign. persoane is a Vector. I keep getting a NullPointerException at the if condition (persoane is definetly not null). I am unable to see why. Any help would be greatly appreciated public Vector<Persoana> cautaDupaZodie(String zodie) { Vector<Persoana> rezultat= new Vector<Persoana>(); for(int i=0; i<persoane.size(); i++) { if(persoane.get(i).getData().getZodie().equals(zodie)) //the exception occurs here { rezultat.add(persoane.get(i)); } } return rezultat; }

  • SQL Databases and table design/organization

    - by John McMullen
(NOOB disclaimer) I'm working on a system (a type of map), that is accessed mostly via 3 fields: ID (auto incremented), X coordinate, and Y coordinate. As it is right now, i have all data on the map, stored in 1 table. Whenever the map display is loaded it simply queries the database for contents in x and y, and the DB gives the data (other fields in the same entry). If an item on the map is doing something, it has a flag saying its doing something, and then has an ID of the action in another table holding that type of 'actions'. Essentially, for all map data, its stored in 1 table. All actions of a certain type are stored in their own table. I'm a noob, and i'm wondering what the most effective/efficient structure for such a design? (a map that has items, and each item has stats/actions). I'm using PHP atm, using standard SQL queries to get my data. Should i split up the tables so that there are only x number of entries on a table? (coord range limits)? Should it just keep growing and growing? There's a lot of queries to the table... so just tryin to see what is best :/

  • Make a mouse pointer do a hyper-jump?

    - by John M
I run a dual monitor setup. To get from monitor 1 to 2 (or vice-versa) requires lots of unnecessary mouse movement. My thought was to leverage a extra mouse button (I have two) and have the mouse hyper-jump (apologies to Star Trek) from the XY coordinates on monitor 1 to the same XY coordinates on monitor 2. How would I go about doing this? Could it be done via C#?

  • Having trouble with post-commit hook

    - by John Isaacks
I am following this tutorial that is like the hello world for post-commit I am using unbuntu 10.04. I installed svnnotify and ran $ which svnnotify which output: /usr/bin/svnnotify so I changed the path in the turorial from /usr/local/bin/svnnotify to /usr/bin/svnnotify I also tried changing the line: #!/bin/sh to #!/bin/bash since bash is the login shell in ubuntu 10.04. I tried to run it the way the tutorial originally had it, with my changes, and combinations of the two. Everytime the commit is successful but I get Warning: post-commit hook failed (exit code 1) with no output. The original way had output not found I am very new to linux and shell scripting and have exhausted everything I can think of. What am I doing wrong?

  • Is this a bug? Or is it a setting in ASP.NET 4 (or MVC 2)?

    - by John Gietzen
I just recently started trying out T4MVC and I like the idea of eliminating magic strings. However, when trying to use it on my master page for my stylesheets, I get this: <link href="<%: Links.Content.site_css %>" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> rending like this: <link href="&lt;%: Links.Content.site_css %>" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> Whereas these render correctly: <link href="<%: Url.Content("~/Content/Site.css") %>" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> <link href="<%: Links.Content.site_css + "" %>" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> It appears that, as long as I have double quotes inside of the code segment, it works. But when I put anything else in there, it escapes the leading "less than". Is this something I can turn off? Is this a bug? Edit: This does not happen for <script src="..." ... />, nor does it happen for <a href="...">. Edit 2: Minimal case: <link href="<%: string.Empty %>" /> vs <link href="<%: "" %>" />

  • Paginating data, has to be a better way

    - by John Tyler
I've read like 10 or so "tutorials", and they all involve the same thing: Pull a count of the data set Pull the relevant data set (LIMIT, OFFSET) IE: SELECT COUNT(*) FROM table WHERE something = ? SELECT * FROM table WHERE something =? LIMIT ? offset ?` Two very similar queries, no? There has to be a better way to do this, my dataset is 600,000+ rows and already sluggish (results are determined by over 30 where clauses, and vary from user to user, but are properly indexed of course).

  • POST parameters strangely parsed inside phantomjs

    - by user61629
I am working with PHP/CURL and would like to send POST data to my phantomjs script, by setting the postfields array below: In my php controller I have: $data=array('first' => 'John', 'last' => 'Smith'); $url='http://localhost:7788/'; $output = $this->my_model->get_data($url,$data); In my php model I have: public function get_data($url,$postFieldArray) { $ch = curl_init(); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_COOKIEJAR, $cookieFile); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_FOLLOWLOCATION, TRUE); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER, TRUE); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_USERAGENT, "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 6.0)"); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_POST, TRUE); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_POSTFIELDS, $postFieldArray); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_URL, $url); $output = curl_exec($ch); In my phantomJS script that I am running locally I have: // import the webserver module, and create a server var server = require('webserver').create(); var port = require('system').env.PORT || 7788; console.log("Start Application"); console.log("Listen port " + port); // Create serever and listen port server.listen(port, function(request, response) { // Print some information Just for debbug console.log("We got some requset !!!"); console.log("request method: ", request.method); // request.method POST or GET if(request.method == 'POST' ){ console.log("POST params should be next: "); console.log("POST params: ",request.post); exit; } I first start and run the phantomjs script (myscript.js) from the command line, then I run my php script. The output is: $ phantomjs.exe myscript.js Start Application Listen port 7788 null We got some requset !!! request method: POST POST params should be next: POST params: ------------------------------e70d439800f9 Content-Disposition: form-data; name="first" John ------------------------------e70d439800f9 Content-Disposition: form-data; name="last" Smith ------------------------------e70d439800f9-- I'm confused about the the output. I was expecting something more like: first' => 'John', 'last' => 'Smith Can someone explain why it looks this way? How can I parse the request.post object to assign to variables inside myscript.js

Hi, In Python if I have 2 lists say: l1 = ['a', 'b', 'c', 'd'] l2 = ['c', 'd', 'e'] is there a way to find out how many elements they have the same. In the case about it would be 2 (c and d) I know I could just do a nested loop but is there not a built in function like in php with the array_intersect function Thanks

  • C++ How do I properly use getline for ifstream members.

    - by John
Ok so I have a problem with getline. I have a file that contains a couple strings. I created it by myself and I have each string on a seperate line. Ex. textfile.txt Line 1 Line 2 Line 3 Line 4 //Little snip of code ifstream inFile("textfile.txt"); getline(inFile, string1); When I debug the program and ask it to print out string1 it shows that "Line 1\r" is saved into string1. I understand that it's from me actually hitting enter when I created the file. This problem causes my program to have a segmentation fault. I know my code works because if I use ofstream to write the file first and then i read it in, it works. So for my quesiton, is their anyway to use the getline function without it picking up the escape sequence \r? If i am not clear just let me know.

  • Django display manytomany field in form when definition is on other model

    - by John
Hi I have the definition for my manytomany relationship on one model but want to display the field on the form of my other model. How do I do this? for example: # classes class modelA(models.Model): name = models.CharField(max_length=300) manytomany = models.ManyToManyField(modelA) class modelB(models.Model): name = models.CharField(max_length=300) # forms class modelBForm(forms.ModelForm): class Meta: model = modelB If I then used modelBForm it would show a select box with the models from modelA rather than just name. Thanks

  • Convolving two signals

    - by John Elway
Calculate the convolution of the following signals (your answer will be in the form of an equation): h[n] = delta[n-1] + delta[n+1], x[n] = delta[n-a] + delta[n+b] I'm lost as to what I do with h and x. Do I simply multiply them? h[n]*x[n]? I programmed convolution with several types of blurs and edge detectors, but I don't see how to translate that knowledge to this problem. please help!

  • Dynamically change MYSQL query within a PHP file using jQuery .post?

    - by John
Hi, Been trying this for quite a while now and I need help. Basically I have a PHP file that queries database and I want to change the query based on a logged in users name. What happens on my site is that a user logs on with Twitter Oauth and I can display their details (twitter username etc.). I have a database which the user has added information to and I what I would like to happen is when the user logs in with Twitter Oauth, I could use jQuery to take the users username and update the mysql query to show only the results where the user_name = that particular users name. At the moment the mysql query is: "SELECT * FROM markers WHERE user_name = 'dave'" I've tried something like: "SELECT * FROM markers WHERE user_name = '$user_name'" And elsewhere in the PHP file I have $user_name = $_POST['user_name'];. In a separate file (the one in which the user is redirected to after they log in through Twitter) I have some jQuery like this: $(document).ready(function(){ $.post('phpsqlinfo_resultb.php',{user_name:"<?PHP echo $profile_name?>"})}); $profile_name has been defined earlier on that page. I know i'm clearly doing something wrong, i'm still learning. Is there a way to achieve what I want using jQuery to post the users username to the PHP file to change the mysql query to display only the results related to the user that is logged in. I've included the PHP file with the query below: <?php // create a new XML document //$doc = domxml_new_doc('1.0'); $doc = new DomDocument('1.0'); //$root = $doc->create_element('markers'); //$root = $doc->append_child($root); $root = $doc->createElement('markers'); $root = $doc->appendChild($root); $table_id = 'marker'; $user_name = $_POST['user_name']; // Make a MySQL Connection include("phpsqlinfo_addrow.php"); $result = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM markers WHERE user_name = '$user_name'") or die(mysql_error()); // process one row at a time //header("Content-type: text/xml"); header('Content-type: text/xml; charset=utf-8'); while($row = mysql_fetch_assoc($result)) { // add node for each row $occ = $doc->createElement($table_id); $occ = $root->appendChild($occ); $occ->setAttribute('lat', $row['lat']); $occ->setAttribute('lng', $row['lng']); $occ->setAttribute('type', $row['type']); $occ->setAttribute('user_name', utf8_encode($row['user_name'])); $occ->setAttribute('name', utf8_encode($row['name'])); $occ->setAttribute('tweet', utf8_encode($row['tweet'])); $occ->setAttribute('image', utf8_encode($row['image'])); } // while $xml_string = $doc->saveXML(); $user_name2->response; echo $xml_string; ?> This is for use with a google map mashup im trying to do. Many thanks if you can help me. If my question isn't clear enough, please say and i'll try to clarify for you. I'm sure this is a simple fix, i'm just relatively inexperienced to do it. Been at this for two days and i'm running out of time unfortunately.

  • Effective Data Validation

    - by John Conde
What's an effective way to handle data validation, say, from a form submission? Originally I had a bunch of if statements that checked each value and collected invalid values in an array for later retrieval (and listing). // Store errors here $errors = array(); // Hypothetical check if a string is alphanumeric if (!preg_match('/^[a-z\d]+$/i', $fieldvalue)) { $errors[$fieldname] = 'Please only use letters and numbers for your street address'; } // etc... What I did next was create a class that handles various data validation scenarios and store the results in an internal array. After data validation was complete I would check to see if any errors occurred and handle accordingly: class Validation { private $errorList = array(); public function isAlphaNumeric($string, $field, $msg = '') { if (!preg_match('/^[a-z\d]+$/i', $string)) { $this->errorList[$field] = $msg; } } // more methods here public function creditCard($cardNumber, $field, $msg = '') { // Validate credit card number } // more methods here public function hasErrors() { return count($this->errorList); } } /* Client code */ $validate = new Validation(); $validate->isAlphaNumeric($fieldvalue1, $fieldname1, 'Please only use letters and numbers for your street address'); $validate->creditCard($fieldvalue2, $fieldname2, 'Please enter a valid credit card number'); if ($validate->hasErrors()) { // Handle as appropriate } Naturally it didn't take long before this class became bloated with the virtually unlimited types of data to be validated. What I'm doing now is using decorators to separate the different types of data into their own classes and call them only when needed leaving generic validations (i.e. isAlphaNumeric()) in the base class: class Validation { private $errorList = array(); public function isAlphaNumeric($string, $field, $msg = '') { if (!preg_match('/^[a-z\d]+$/i', $string)) { $this->errorList[$field] = $msg; } } // more generic methods here public function setError($field, $msg = '') { $this->errorList[$field] = $msg; } public function hasErrors() { return count($this->errorList); } } class ValidationCreditCard { protected $validate; public function __construct(Validation $validate) { $this->validate = $validate; } public function creditCard($cardNumber, $field, $msg = '') { // Do validation // ... // if there is an error $this->validate->setError($field, $msg); } // more methods here } /* Client code */ $validate = new Validation(); $validate->isAlphaNumeric($fieldvalue, $fieldname, 'Please only use letters and numbers for your street address'); $validateCC = new ValidationCreditCard($validate); $validateCC->creditCard($fieldvalue2, $fieldname2, 'Please enter a valid credit card number'); if ($validate->hasErrors()) { // Handle as appropriate } Am I on the right track? Or did I just complicate data validation more then I needed to?

  • What is the difference between calling Stream.Write and using a StreamWriter?

    - by John Nelson
What is the difference between instantiating a Stream object, such as MemoryStream and calling the memoryStream.Write() method to write to the stream, and instantiating a StreamWriter object with the stream and calling streamWriter.Write()? Consider the following scenario: You have a method that takes a Stream, writes a value, and returns it. The stream is read from later on, so the position must be reset. There are two possible ways of doing it (both seem to work). // Instantiate a MemoryStream somewhere // - Passed to the following two methods MemoryStream memoryStream = new MemoryStream(); // Not using a StreamWriter private static Stream WriteToStream(Stream stream, string value) { stream.Write(Encoding.Default.GetBytes(value), 0, value.Length); stream.Flush(); stream.Position = 0; return stream; } // Using a StreamWriter private static Stream WriteToStreamWithWriter(Stream stream, string value) { StreamWriter sw = new StreamWriter(stream); sw.Write(value, 0, value.Length); sw.Flush(); stream.Position = 0; return stream; } This is partially a scope problem, as I don't want to close the stream after writing to it since it will be read from later. I also certainly don't want to dispose it either, because that will close my stream. The difference seems to be that not using a StreamWriter introduces a direct dependency on Encoding.Default, but I'm not sure that's a very big deal. What's the difference, if any?

  • Left Join works with table but fails with query

    - by Frank Martin
    The following left join query in MS Access 2007 SELECT Table1.Field_A, Table1.Field_B, qry_Table2_Combined.Field_A, qry_Table2_Combined.Field_B, qry_Table2_Combined.Combined_Field FROM Table1 LEFT JOIN qry_Table2_Combined ON (Table1.Field_A = qry_Table2_Combined.Field_A) AND (Table1.Field_B = qry_Table2_Combined.Field_B); is expected by me to return this result: +--------+---------+---------+---------+----------------+ |Field_A | Field_B | Field_A | Field_B | Combined_Field | +--------+---------+---------+---------+----------------+ |1 | | | | | +--------+---------+---------+---------+----------------+ |1 | | | | | +--------+---------+---------+---------+----------------+ |2 |1 |2 |1 |John, Doe | +--------+---------+---------+---------+----------------+ |2 |2 | | | | +--------+---------+---------+---------+----------------+ [Table1] has 4 records, [qry_Table2_Combined] has 1 record. But it gives me this: +--------+---------+---------+---------+----------------+ |Field_A | Field_B | Field_A | Field_B | Combined_Field | +--------+---------+---------+---------+----------------+ |2 |1 |2 |1 |John, Doe | +--------+---------+---------+---------+----------------+ |2 |2 |2 | |, | +--------+---------+---------+---------+----------------+ Really weird is that the [Combined_Field] has a comma in the second row. I use a comma to concatenate two fields in [qry_Table2_Combined]. If the left join query uses a table created from the query [qry_Table2_Combined] it works as expected. Why does this left join query not give the same result for a query and a table? And how can i get the right results using a query in the left join?

  • Possibility of language data type not mapped to shipped .NET Framework?

    - by John K
Does anybody know of a managed programming language implemented on .NET that contains a specialized data type that is not mapped through to the Common Type System/FCL/BCL or one that does not have a shipped .NET equivalent (e.g. shipped standard types like System.String, System.Int32)? This question would likely come from the perspective of someone porting a compiler (although I'm not doing that). Is it as simple as the language creating a new data type outside the BCL/FCL for its specialized type? If so does this hinder interoperability between programming languages that are otherwise accustomed to mapping all their built-in data types to what's in the BCL/FCL, like Visual Basic and C#? I can imagine this situation might come about if an obscure language compiler of some kind is ported to .NET for which there is no direct mapping of one of its implicit data types to the shipped Framework. How is this situation supported or allowed in general? What would be the expectation of the compiler and the Common Language Runtime?

  • NHibernate - define where condition

    - by t.kehl
Hi. In my application the user can defines search-conditions. He can choose a column, set an operator (equals, like, greater than, less or equal than, etc.) and give in the value. After the user clicks on a button and the application should do a search on the database with the condition. I use NHibernate and ask me now, what is the efficientest way to do this with NHibernate. Should I create a query with it like (Column=Name, Operator=Like, Value=%John%) var a = session.CreateCriteria<Customer>(); a.Add(Restrictions.Like("Name", "%John%")); return a.List<Customer>(); Or should I do this with HQL: var q = session.CreateQuery("from Customer where " + where); return q.List<Customer >(); Or is there a more bether solution? Thanks for your help. Best Regards, Thomas

  • problem with implementing a simple work queue

    - by John Deerikio
Hi all, I am having troubles with implementing a simple work queue. Doing some analysis, I am facing a subtle problem. The work queue is backed by a regular linked list. The code looks like this (simplified): 0. while (true) 1. while (enabled == true) 2. acquire lock on the list and get the next action to be executed (blocking operation) (store it in a local variable) 3. execute the action (outside the lock on the list on previous line) 4. get lock on this work queue 5. wait until this work queue has been notified (triggered when setEnabled(true) has been callled) The setEnabled(e) operation looks like this (simplified): enabled = e if (enabled == true) acquire lock on this work queue and do notify() Although this works, there is a condition in which a deadlock occurs. It happens in the following rare situation: while an action is being executed, setEnabled(false) is called just before step (4) is entered, setEnabled(true) is called now step (5) keeps waiting forever, because this work queue has already been notified How do I solve this? I have been looking at this for some time, but I cannot come up with a solution. Please note I am fairly new to thread synchronization. Thanks a lot.
