• SharePoint Session Management - which SQL Server option?

  We're developing some custom web parts for our WSS 3 intranet, and have just run into something we'd like to use ASP.NET sessions for. This isn't currently enabled on the development server. We'd like to use SQL Server as the storage mechanism, because the production environment is a web farm with very simple load-balancing. There are 3 options you can choose from to set up the SQL Server session storage, tempdb, default separate DB, named DB. Both tempdb and default separate DB create a new DB to store certain information in; tempdb stores the actual session info in tempdb, which doesn't survive a reboot, and default separate DB stores everything in the new DB. Since you've got to create the new DB either way, my question is this: why would you ever choose to store the session info in tempdb? The only thing I can think of is if you'd like to have the ability to wipe the session by rebooting the server, but that seems quite apocalyptic!

  Hi everyone, I can't seem to find a list of all event IDs related to DCM in SCCM. I managed to find the common ones by testing but I'm sure there are tons of scenarios I haven't seen yet. I'm interested in events related to compliance status, errors, etc in particular such as these: 11854 - Policy is now compliant 11856 - Previously compliant is now non compliant.. Please post any other event IDs you know of related to this.. Thank you

• Hyper-V Server Management from Windows 8.1

  Is there a way to manage a Hyper-V cluster that runs on a Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter from a Windows 8.1 Pro workstation? I've downloaded and installed the Remote Server Admin Tools for 8.1 (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=39296), but when I enable the Hyper-V manager, it tells me that I can't manage Hyper-V servers on 2K8 or 2K8R2. Related, the Failover Cluster Manager barfs with a similar error. How do I manage my old servers with my new workstation?

  I'd like to know what's with all those unnamed drives. I've always thought they are what they say they are (recoveries and what not), why are there so many of them? and why do they all say 100% Free (i.e. they're all empty!). If that's the case, what happened to my recovery? Info: I'm on Dell Inspiron 7520 Windows 8 Single Language (Had Kali installed on SSD a couple of days ago, now I've just deleted that and will install Kali on VM on SSD, that's drive (S:). • Domain Hosting, DNS/NS Management [closed]

  What criteria do you have for choosing the right provider for registering a domain? (not hosting, only the domain) So far, I can only see the different pricing and features of the DNS manager but have no idea what I have to pay attention in addition to this. How to know about the quality of the provider's nameserver and could there be differences in speed concerns. Background: The hosting itself incl. webspace, server etc. is separate from the domain and I am not going to book the domain with the same hoster as the webspace/server hoster.

• Image Management System with Different Levels of Access

  I work in the graphics department for a real estate brokerage, and we deal with a lot of photos. Agents take the photos, upload them to me, I touch up and standardize the photos, then I add them to an in-house server for future use by the graphics dept. I'd like to make the "sanitized" photo files available to the agents to use when they want, but I don't want the agents poking around the graphics department's files (things get misplaced, renamed and messed up in a hurry). What would be perfect is if we could create a read-only "mirror" (correct term?) of that server that could be accessed by the agents as needed, but which wouldn't feed back into our "sanitized" file system. Edit: I'm looking for an automatic solution... manually posting the files to two separate locations seems like an inelegant solution when working digitally. Edit: I'm trying to avoid any access barriers to the public (dirty) file system (however it's finally implemented). There are 40-50 real estate agents who need to access these files, half of whom can't reliably download an email attachment.

• Multi server management

  We are running a website that allow users to create their own content, then share it through an iframe. We would like to get more servers to host the user content, and the main one for our website. Each user has a link like xxxx.com/content989856, xxxx.com/content45454545 We were thinking of two options : using a htaccess on the main server that will redirect to the good server but the problem is that if the main server is out, then all the content is out as well using subdomain depending on where the content is hosted, but then if we change the user content from one domain to another one, we will have to change his links as well Do you know a better option or is that really the only two available ? I am wondering how big websites like youtube handle this problem. Thank you very much for your help,

• HyperV management through Windows 8

  Consider the following setup: 1 Hypervisor 3 Clients (Server 2012 with AD, Server 2012, Windows 8). Now we can remote desktop into the Hypervisor and manage the VMs with the manager. This also works from the Server 2012 (I installed the manager there). But it doesn't work from the Windows 8 machine. All machines are in the same domain. Am I forgetting something? I followed this long page http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc794756(v=ws.10).aspx But I find it so weird that it works for the same user on Windows Server 2012, but not on Windows 8.

• What's the best C# recommendation engine or framework?

  Is there anyway to use the examples for the "My Media" Microsoft research project? My Media is a "dynamic personalization and recommendation software framework toolkit" ( http://www.mymediaproject.org ), but out of the box it doesn't provide a sample database (only a LINQ-to-SQL .dbml schema), I don't believe it will be easy to re-create by hand. I was hoping to understand recommendation engines and machine learning with this C#/.Net as a testbed, but without a simple quick start or db it seems impractical. Any suggestions? (I guess it's time to switch to Java with Apache's Mahout, Weka or something similar?)

  This is very basic question from programming point of view but as I am in learning phase, I thought I would better ask this question rather than having a misunderstanding or narrow knowledge about the topic. So do excuse me if somehow I mess it up. Question: Let's say I have class A,B,C and D now class A has some piece of code which I need to have in class B,C and D so I am extending class A in class B, class C, and class D Now how can I access the function of class A in other classes, do I need to create an object of class A and than access the function of class A or as am extending A in other classes than I can internally call the function using this parameter. If possible I would really appreciate if someone can explain this concept with code sample explaining how the logic flows. Note Example in Java, PHP and .Net would be appreciated.

• Benefits of programming (doing) versus reading blogs (thinking?)

  I have come to a conclusion or realization that perhaps many developers I know including myself have a fanatical fascination with reading as many programming and technology blogs or listening to podcasts as humanly possible. I sometimes wonder if this time would be much better spent in actual coding and doing, rather than the incessant thinking and perhaps wondering what the "other guy" is doing? With a very large signal to noise ratio in most blogs and podcasts, is there real benefit in maintaining a huge and constant blog role.. or is this some primal fear or instinct to keep up the pace unless being left behind? Can they simply be relegated to Google search and just-in-time learning? • Metalanguage like BNF or XML-Schema to validate a tree-instance against a tree-model

  Hi! I'm implementing a new machine learning algorithm in Java that extracts a prototype datastructure from a set of structured datasets (tree-structure). As im developing a generic library for that purpose, i kept my design independent from concrete data-representations like XML. My problem now is that I need a way to define a data model, which is basically a ruleset describing valid trees, against which a set of trees is being matched. I thought of using BNF or a similar dialect. Basically I need a way to iterate through the space of all valid TreeNodes defined by the ModelTree (Like a search through the search space for algorithms like A*) so that i can compare my set of concrete trees with the model. I know that I'll have to deal with infinite spaces there but first things first. I know, it's rather tricky (and my sentences are pretty bumpy) but I would appreciate any clues. • Perl for a Python programmer

  I know Python (and a bunch of other languages) and I think it might be nice to learn Perl, even if it seems that most of the people is doing it the other way around... My main concern is not about the language itself (I think that part is always easy), but about learning the Perlish (as contrasted with Pythonic) way of doing things; because I don't think it'll be worth the effort if I end up programming Python in Perl. So my questions are basically two: Are there many problems/application areas where it's actually more convenient to solve them in Perl rather than in Python? If the first question is positive, where can I found a good place to get started and learn best practices that is not oriented to beginners?

• Getting ready to learn html5

  I'm a desktop application developer, and I plan learning html5, but as it's not released, there are (almost) no published books and not too much infomation for beginners on the web... I feel I should start with html4 and the current web development skills. I think I should start with html4, css, and javascript... but there are so many technologies related that I get lost :D So, what current technologies will be still used when html5 is released? I mean, what about "jquery" and "ajax"? I know they are javascript under the hood, but will they still make sense in the future? What would you recommend me considering that I have just a little bit of html knowlegde, almost null CSS and completely null in javascript?

• How do you find time for improving your programming skills?

  I'm a Java/J2ee programmer working in India. I'm very passionate about programming and I constantly strive to hone my programming skills by reading blogs, solving Project euler questions, learning new technologies, developing small apps etc;. But I find it very difficult to manage my time. Working for 12 hrs a day in office leaves me stressed out and spend my weekends with my family. So i hardly have like 5-6 hrs per week to actually work on something of my interest which will help me improve. How do you manage time so that you find time to improve your current standing? EDIT: 12 hours includes 1hour of travel & 1 hr of break(lunch/coffee). Effectively I work for 10 hours per day in office which is mandated by my organization. -Snehal

• Can someone suggest a way to learn regex?

  In my situation knowing Regex would be very useful but I can't seem to be able to learn it. I completely don't understand it and I find it quite strange. To me Regex is just a set of jumbled up symbols which 'somehow' does the job. I looked at many tutorials and still haven't figured how to use it. The other thing I find weird that whenever I search for a way to implement something with regex I find lots of different solutions. For example these are for 'matching text between the brackets' 1: \((.*?)\) 2: ((.+?)) That confuses me even more ... Can someone suggest a good way of learning it? Personally I find it even more difficult than assembly language. For now I'm avoiding Regex and using things such as "substr" to get the bits I need.

  I am trying to implement a naive bayseian approach to find the topic of a given document or stream of words. Is there are Naive Bayesian approach that i might be able to look up for this ? Also, i am trying to improve my dictionary as i go along. Initially, i have a bunch of words that map to a topics (hard-coded). Depending on the occurrence of the words other than the ones that are already mapped. And depending on the occurrences of these words i want to add them to the mappings, hence improving and learning about new words that map to topic. And also changing the probabilities of words. How should i go about doing this ? Is my approach the right one ? Which programming language would be best suited for the implementation ?

There is usually no intention of the language being adopted for real-world programming. Such languages are often popular among hackers and hobbyists. This use of esoteric is meant to distinguish these languages from more popular programming languages. Some more popular languages may appear esoteric (in the usual sense of the word) to some, and though these could arguably be called "esoteric programming languages" too, this is not what is meant. I think it might be worth it, just to learn a new language and go through the process, although only if you don't have anything else to do (like a real project or learning a new real language). • Are evolutionary algorithms and neural networks used in the same problem domains?

  I am trying to get a feel for the difference between the various classes of machine-learning algorithms. I understand that the implementations of evolutionary algorithms are quite different from the implementations of neural networks. However, they both seem to be geared at determining a correlation between inputs and outputs from a potentially noisy set of training/historical data. From a qualitative perspective, are there problem domains that are better targets for neural networks as opposed to evolutionary algorithms? I've skimmed some articles that suggest using them in a complementary fashion. Is there a decent example of a use case for that? Thanks
