• Can't get Intel drivers for ASUS P6T Deluxe

  Hi everybody, A few days back my Win7 Ultimate started bugging me to install the RAID drivers for my ASUS P6T Delux. Fine, I'm all for having up to date drivers even for stuff I don't use. The problem is that the drivers I download from both ASUS support site here and the ones I get directly from Intel (can't post the second link, since I have less than 10 rep, but it's the first hit for "Intel(R) Matrix Storage Manager Driver" on google) say that my system does not meet the minimum system requirements. Impossible, I would think, what with it having the X58 chipset and the Windows version is supported one. Has anyone encountered something like this before? Any clues on how to solve this would be much appreciated. Thanks!

• No "Terminal Services" branch in "Group Policy Object Editor"

  Hi, We have several identical several servers in a hosting company. They run Windows 2003 R2 Std SP2 64bit. The servers are not in a domain. We have recently received a new server with the same configuration and hardware. However, the new server is different in some way. When we run "gpedit.msc /s" there are much less options in the tree than the other servers. Specifically we are missing the configuration of "Terminal Services". Many other items are missing under "Administrative templates" and "Windows components". • Is there way to use Windows Easy Transfer on Windows Server 2008

  At work, I'd been experimenting with using Windows Server 2008 as a desktop machine - I'm a s/w developer so some of the server software was particularly appropriate, but back in the day there was a suggestion that Server 2008 would be faster than Vista (mainly because of less bloat). I'm now wanting to move across to a new Windows 7 workstation; not only does Server 2008 not have Windows Easy Transfer, but I can't attack the problem from the Windows 7 end either - when I try to run the migration wizard it claims that the software 'isnt compatible with this version of Windows'. I'd bet that it would work fine, if only it wasn't for the arbitrary version check... Is there any way to coax this software into working? If not, any good alternatives to Windows Easy Transfer - I don't fancy having to manually copy application settings etc across myself...

What I already know/have: 1) How to create LVM partitions and create ext3 filesystem 2) Mount the LVM partition and ISO image 3) Run the partition with Xen as a virtual machine What I need: 1) I need to install Fedora ll file system into an lvm partition (let's say /dev/fedora11) from an ISO image so that I have all the directories /root, /bin, /sys etc etc under /dev/fedora11 Any help would be much appreciated! • How does one calculate voltages for overclocking?

  So, all I know is voltage and clock have something to do with each other. Unstable if too low voltage Too high voltage, and too much heat. or higher voltage + lower clock may heat less than that voltage at higher clock. The reason why im asking is because if I can learn how the power vs speed works, Then i might be able to project some kind of thermal curve to find out where my perfect overclock might be (without 50 burn-ins) But, as is apparent im sure. I have no idea what im talking about. If anyone can help me learn more about this; throw me a page, a macro, whathaveyou I will bow before your awesomeness and... • Where can I find a useful Unicode fallback font for Mac OS X?

  On every browser I've tried (Firefox, Safari, Chrome, and Omniweb), when I go to a web page containing somewhat less-common characters, I can't see the glyphs. For example, on the Wikipedia page for the Bengali Language, the very first line contains a string of squares; on Windows, I can see the Bengali writing. On Windows, as long as I have the Arial Unicode MS font installed, these characters fall back to that font and display properly. Mac OS X doesn't seem to ship with a font containing these Unicode characters (it has Arial Unicode MS, but it must be a subset of the Windows version because Bengali doesn't display in that font). I checked on my Snow Leopard DVD and I installed "Additional Fonts" from the Optional Installs package, but I'm still missing many languages. Is there any good, free font that contains a large collection of languages? I know creating fonts is difficult and time-consuming, but it seems like including at least one font like this with operating systems should be standard by now.

• rvmsudo foreman export upstart without asking for password

  My capistrano deploy.rb has a foreman export command for a rails app on Ubuntu 10.04 So, while deploying, I want to export the foreman to upstart script. But doing that, the command rvmsudo foreman export ... asks for root password and I cannot do anything. • Sensei mouse sensitivity

  I've recently acquired a Steelseries Sensei. Despite being a great mouse, I'm having some trouble finding settings that I can get used to... The mouse engine allows me to set a CPI from 0 to 5700. It also allows me to set it even higher, calling it "DCPI" (Double CPI), from 5701 to 11400. On Window's Control Panel, there's a "Pointer Speed" slider and a "Enhance Pointer Precision" checkbox (wording may be different as I use a non-english version). The majority of games allow me to set an in-game "Mouse Sensitivity". Some games let me use a "Raw mouse input". I'm already familiar with the basics of CPI/DPI - "higher CPI means less hand movement", but what are the differences between all those options? Is there a "better" or "worst" setting?

• OVF Tools error

  Hello all, I am trying to use OVF tools 1.0 to create an .ovf appliance split to 4gbs. When I run the following command: ovftool --chunkSize=4gb vi://:@/?ds= e:\test\test.ovf everything starts off fine. It will got for about 15-16% then I get this message: "Error: unable to get NFC ticket for target disk". I have looked online, but cannot find anything that matches this problem. I am using Windows 2k3 as the ovf creation server, and I'm in a ESX 3.5 environment. The ovf must be split into 4gb chunks (or less) so they can be put onto DVDs. Also, when it is done it deletes the files it started to create. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Migrated SQL Server database suddenly in "Restoring" state

  Edit: This is still a live prob, less than an hour after trying RESTORE ... WITH RECOVERY. I backed up a SQL Server 2005 database and restored it to a new SQL 2008 instance. The restore was quick and successful. Everything was fine for an hour or so. Suddenly, the database is now stuck in "(Restoring...)" state in Management Studio and has a green arrow icon, and my application login is failing! Any advice? :-) Edit: This is a live application. If I delete and try again, the hour or so's data will be lost.

• Different color prompts for different machines when using terminal/ssh?

  I have 5 machines I constantly ssh into to do work. Its getting increasingly frustrating when I am issuing wrong commands on wrong boxes. Luckily I havent done anything bad yet. I wanted to know if there is any hack which I can hardcode which will display my prompt in different colors based on the machine I am ssh into? Such as blue for desktop1, purple for laptop, red for server etc? Is this possible? Currently I am using this command export PS1="\e[0;31m[\u@\h \W]\$ \e[m " taken from here http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/bash-shell-change-the-color-of-my-shell-prompt-under-linux-or-unix/ but it obviously doesnt work across ssh. Also, if you have any other cool bash tips for helping me ease my sight will be wonderful. • Home ZFS based NAS...What processor/chipset to use?

  So, I'm building a home/personal NAS. My plan is to expose both SMB fileshares for sharing files/media between hosts, but also to carve an iSCSI target LUN out of it for use by VMWare as a datastore. I want to use ZFS (software RAID) so that means I'll either be using FreeNAS, Solaris Express, or OpenIndiana. My question is basically: How much horsepower do I need? Obviously I/O is going to be my bottleneck but I want to be sure that I am not limiting my I/O because of a slow processor or chipset. So far the hardware plan is to use an Intel i3 and motherboard with one of the H87, Q87, or Z87 chipsets, a SAS controller (JBOD, no RAID) and if budget allows, I'm also hoping to get an SSD for the ZFS L2ARC and ZIL. Does anyone think I could get away with an Intel Atom or cheaper/less-capable processor/chipset than the i3 and [HQZ]87 listed above?

  Assuming the data is the same either way, does the maximum length of the VARCHAR affect the space usage of a secondary index? Does InnoDB use fixed length records for indexes? Assume that we're talking about MySQL 5.1, with the InnoDB COMPRESSED table format and that the field in question is defined as a VARCHAR with some length less than or equal to 255 (so that it uses only one byte for the offset). Here is the use case: I have a server with a very large table (several gigabytes). One of the fields is currently VARCHAR(7). We need it a little longer and we are thinking of making it VARCHAR(255), but we are worried that it bloat the index.

• Best approach to utilize RamDisk for Chrome?

  I use a lot of tabs and after a while less recently opened tabs take some time to become responsive, which I guess is because they're being un-cached to HDD as they're not required. So after creating a Ram-Disk I have two options, use --disk-cache-dir="G:/" switch to do what it does. Or what I'm currently doing: using a directory junction for "[...]\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default" to move that entire folder over to Ram-Disk. I thought this would be better than just disk-cache but what do I know. Is it? As one can guess it'll be a pain saving/loading the Ram-Disk image each time I start chrome but if it really is better than the former approach I'll write a script or something.

Is there a better way to do this?

• Windows Live Family Safety Service keeps closing Start Menu

  Got my kids a new Toshiba Laptop for Christmas. I was setting it all up for them so it would be ready to go. Tonight I installed Windows Live Family Safety Parental Controls. In the process of testing I discovered that on all the accounts the Start Menu closes automatically within 3 seconds (or less) of opening. It seems that it happens every 3 seconds, so sometimes it is immediate, and if I open it again then it will stay open for a full 3 seconds. This of course is rather annoying, and I need to wrap it up so it is ready to go under the tree. I disabled the Windows Live Family Safety Service, and that fixed it. Enable it again and the behavior returns. Is this a feature of the service? Can I disable that feature and keep the other features?

• Pure-FTPd linux upload problems - 500 Unknown command

  I'm running Centos with Kloxo CP and PureFTPd on VPS based on HyperVM. The problem - during the day, there are periods when FTP wors fine for hours, but sometimes it dies with "500 Unknown command" code. for files larger than 2Kb. This is really weird - with files less than 2472-2484 bytes everything would work fine, but with bigger files ftp would start writing file, would drop on 2Kb and would return "500 Unknown command" . This happens on Passive AND/OR Active connections for any filetypes. Logs are showing like the file was uploaded successfully , but the speed nearby the action would be 0.3 -0.5 Kb , when normal operation would report 70-150Kb/s speeds. I do have some Iptables firewalls on both HyperVM host,and VPS , however these are static, and most of the time it works just fine. Any suggestions on where to look for a solution would be appreciated :)

• Windows not showing version (or other resources) for files in tooltip

  Whenever I hover the mouse cursor over executable file types (.exe, .dll, etc.) in Windows Explorer, it only shows the Type, Size, and (Modified) Date of the file in the tooltip instead of the Company, Version, Description, etc. This used to work in Windows XP, but Windows 7 is showing me less information which is frustrating because I often need that information to be quickly and easily available (no, opening the Properties dialog or adding columns is not a solution). How can I get Explorer to show me all the relevant information for the files in the tooltip? (Bonus points for also showing it in the Preview pane at the bottom.)

  I have just installed SmartSVN on this fedora system. The application starts (on running ./smartsvn.sh) with its usual UI but many things are not working. Some Observations When I run the smartsvn.sh file like this:- ./smartsvn.sh It shows this in the console - Warning: /bin/java does not exist Could not lock /root/.smartsvn/_lock_ Switched to running instance I was using SmartSVN in another system before this where it was working. There too, it was showing the warning like Warning: /bin/java does not exist but this part was not showing:- Could not lock /root/.smartsvn/_lock_ Switched to running instance I have only JRE installed in both the systems and not JDK. • Transfer used ram to swap and free more physical ram

  I have a vps with 256m physical ram and 512m swap space, I am trying to use a software that need more than 256m and less than 512m ram, so it uses swap. The problem is at some moment of the installation, the installation process checks the available physical ram, it's full (some swap is used), so it pauses the installation and tills that it must be some more ram to continue the installation.. I see that I need to move some of used physical ram to swap while the process is running.. Is there anyway I can do that? or any other solution! For sorry I am using openvz vps, and the vm.swappiness option can't be modified as a solution.

• mytop: least privileges required to run it?

  What is the minimum set of privileges that mytop requires in order to work, without actually requiring super-user privileges. I feel uncomfortable with the fact that I have to save the password in the configuration file (the less desirable alternative would be the command line), so I want to minimize the impact, should someone get to see the password. The password will still be used only in this one place, but I would prefer to not give unneeded privileges to the (MySQL) user mytop is running as. The mytop documentation doesn't mention any of that and all examples assume root.

  I have folders with images (*.png and *.jpg) >C:\Directory\Folder1 01.png 02.png 03.jpg 04.jpg 05.png And I want to rename all the files like this using powershell: >C:\Directory\Folder1 Folder1 - 01.png Folder1 - 02.png Folder1 - 03.jpg Folder1 - 04.jpg Folder1 - 05.png So I came up with this simple line: Get-ChildItem | Where-Object { $_.Extension -eq ".jpg" -or $_.Extension -eq ".png"} | rename-item -newname {$_.Directory.Name +" - " + $_.Name} If I have 35 or less files in the folder, I will have the wanted result, but if there is 36 or more files, I will end up with this: >C:\Directory\Folder1 Folder1Folder1Folder1 - 01.png Folder1Folder1Folder1 - 02.png Folder1Folder1Folder1 - 03.jpg Folder1Folder1Folder1 - 04.jpg Folder1Folder1Folder1 - 05.png The loop stops when the file's name exceeds 248 characters. Any ideas why it's looping?

• What kind of storage do people actually use for VMware ESX servers?

  VMware and many network evangelists try to tell you that sophisticated (=expensive) fiber SANs are the "only" storage option for VMware ESX and ESXi servers. Well, yes, of course. Using a SAN is fast, reliable and makes vMotion possible. Great. But: Can all ESX/ESXi users really afford SANs? My theory is that less than 20% of all VMware ESX installations on this planet actually use fiber or iSCS SANs. Most of these installation will be in larger companies who can afford this. I would predict that most VMware installations use "attached storage" (vmdks are stored on disks inside the server). Most of them run in SMEs and there are so many of them! We run two ESX 3.5 servers with attached storage and two ESX 4 servers with an iSCS san. And the "real live difference" between both is barely notable :-) Do you know of any official statistics for this question? What do you use as your storage medium?
