Help building pygtk application

This is my application. It is created with quickly. I would like to package it for Ubuntu now. I tried to package it with uickly, but that failed. At first, I was trying to install it using setup.py. But it is only copied in python lib dir, no icon, no desktop file installed. Then I tried to follow this guide, but I ended up with package without icon and it was of bad quality, but most important of all, it does not use setup.py, and it was pretty complicated. I would like to automate packaging process Can someone point me in the right direction, some examples of existing apps that have automated packaging etc? Thanks in advance.

xmpp flow -server, client and library

My complete requirement is development of a chat engine - including server, clients etc. Currently I am working on things at my desktop only but once done, I have to host it; basically incorporate it with in a site for chatting purpose. So, now my problem is: I am not clear about how the actual data flow is? I have googled and read about xmpp (a book by Peter Andre) also but I am not clear about the flow and what are the actual requirements to do the above mentioned task. What I currently know is: 1) I need a server - so selected ejabberd 2) I need client - still not sure which one to use and one other doubt is how this client thing will work when deployed on some website for chatting purpose. 3) Some library - don't know which one and what is the purpose? Can anyone guide me?

ZFS for Database Log Files

I've been troubled by drop outs in CPU usage in my application server, characterized by the CPUs suddenly going from close to 90% CPU busy to almost completely CPU idle for a few seconds. I explored many theories trying to explain the drop outs, including: Unexpected JMeter behavior Network contention Java Garbage Collection Application Server thread pool problems Connection pool problems Database transaction processing Database I/O contention Graphing the CPU %idle led to a breakthrough: Several of the drop outs were 30 seconds apart. With that insight, I went digging through the data again and looking for other outliers that were 30 seconds apart. In the database server statistics, I found spikes in the iostat "asvc_t" (average response time of disk transactions, in milliseconds) for the disk drive that was being used for the database log files. Storage for the database was on a storage array connected via 8 gigabit Fibre Channel Data storage and log file were on different physical disk drives Reliable low latency I/O is provided by battery backed NVRAM Highly available: Two Fibre Channel links accessed via MPxIO Two Mirrored cache controllers The log file physical disks were mirrored in the storage device Database log files on a ZFS Filesystem with cutting-edge technologies, such as copy-on-write and end-to-end checksumming Why would I be getting service time spikes in my high-end storage? First, I wanted to verify that the database log disk service time spikes aligned with the application server CPU drop outs, and they did: At first, I guessed that the disk service time spikes might be related to flushing the write through cache on the storage device, but I was unable to validate that theory. After searching the WWW for a while, I decided to try using a separate log device: # zpool add ZFS-db-41 log c3t60080E500017D55C000015C150A9F8A7d0 The ZFS log device is configured in a similar manner as described above: two physical disks mirrored in the storage array. The spikes are from flushing the transaction group. Like almost all problems that I run into, once I thoroughly understand the problem, I find that other people have documented similar experiences. Thanks to all of you who have documented alternative approaches. Saved for another day: now that the problem is obvious, I should try "zfs:zfs_immediate_write_sz" as recommended in the ZFS Evil Tuning Guide. transparent home directory encryption

#1 I'm very new to the ubuntu home directory encryption or rather ecryptfs folder encryption. I read about the same within Dustin's blog & tried implementing it. Problem or query is my home directory is encrypted & has a www folder ... now when I reboot the system the decryption doesnt happen at startup/boot & apache is not able to find the files rather the folder www since it is not mounted ... in order to mount it I have to login .... is there a way by which an encrypted home / private folder can be mounted at boot without human intervention ? #2 I have installed ubuntu server 11.10 & had selected "encrypt home directory" when installing the same. With ubuntu things are working transparently even after reboot & without logging in. Kindly can anyone pls explain or guide on the same ?

Checking whether a specific key was pressed in enchantJS

I am using enchantJS and would like to use the letters and numbers as well as numpad on a keyboard to do different things (eg: hotkeys). From this page http://users.csc.calpoly.edu/~foaad/enchant/guide/playerInput.html By default, enchant.js provides input listeners for six buttons: UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT, A, and B. By default, the directions are bound to the arrow keys. Any of the six buttons may also be bound to any key with an ASCII value. We’ll address that later. So enchant provides the ability to bind keys to different input such as up, down, left, right...but how can I simply check whether the D or X key was pressed, and if so, perform certain actions based on that event?

gnome-file-share-properties doesn't work

I've configured gnome-file-share-properties on all my Ubuntu's PC for sharing the directory Public to each other. I following some guide found on Internet for the configuration of it, all explain the same procedure but in my case I don't see any Public directory shared with the PC. Following this link http://library.gnome.org/users/gnome-user-share/stable/gnome-user-share-getting-started.html.en I'd see the directory Public plus the name of PC that shares its directory on Nautilus Places. In my case I don't see anything, therefore on the Network place see all the machines 'n if I try to click on one receive this: "DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus)" note: I don't want to use Samba because I've all Ubuntu PC, and the firewall is disabled on all PC.

I joined an organisation in April 2010. I just changed my job in January 2012. I was previously working with Java. But in my current organisation, the work is not in java. They told me in the interview that the work will be use Java technology. But this is not the case. I dont want to lose my previous Java experience. And moreover, in my current company , I am working on a language which is not used anywhere. I want to change again. Can anyone please help and guide me that will there be any issue now in changing the job again.?

xmonad keyboard doesn't work

I'm experimenting with xmonad, which I installed from the Ubuntu Software Centre on Ubuntu 12.10. It looks cool, but when I invoke it (using xmonad --replace from the command line) my title bars disappear and my keyboard stops working. At all. The terminal stops working, the keystrokes I've seen in online "getting started" guides are ignored, and the only way for me to actually power the system off is to hit the reset button or ssh in from my phone. Ironically, my mouse still works. One guide I saw suggested replacing the default window environment with xmonad, but I'm afraid of rendering my system completely inoperable if I do that. Any suggestions?

Application Composer Series: Where and When to use Groovy

This brief post is really intended as more of a reference than an article. The table below highlights two things, firstly where you can add you own custom logic via groovy code (end column), and secondly (middle column) when you might use each particular feature. Obviously this applies only where Application Composer exists, namely Fusion CRM and Oracle Sales Cloud, and is based on current (release 8) functionality. Feature Most Common Use Case Groovy Field Triggers React to run-time data changes. Only fired when the field is changed and upon submit. Y Object Triggers To extend the standard processing logic for an object, based on record creation, updates and deletes. There is a split between these firing events, with some related to UI/ADF actions and others originating in the database. UI Trigger Points: After Create - fires when a new object record is created. Commonly used to set default values for fields. Before Modify - Fires when the end-user tries to modify a field value. Could be used for generic warnings or extra security logic. Before Invalidate - Fires on the parent object when one of its child object records is created, updated, or deleted. For building in relationship logic. Before Remove - Fires when an attempt is made to delete an object record. Can be used to create conditions that prevent deletes. Database Trigger Points: Before Insert in Database - Fires before a new object is inserted into the database. Can be used to ensure a dependent record exists or check for duplicates. After Insert in Database - Fires after a new object is inserted into the database. Could be used to create a complementary record. Before Update in Database -Fires before an existing object is modified in the database. Could be used to check dependent record values. After Update in Database - Fires after an existing object is modified in the database. Could be used to update a complementary record. Before Delete in Database - Fires before an existing object is deleted from the database. Could be used to check dependent record values. After Delete in Database - Fires after an existing object is deleted from the database. Could be used to remove dependent records. After Commit in Database - Fires after the change pending for the current object (insert, update, delete) is made permanent in the current transaction. Could be used when committed data that has passed all validation is required. After Changes Posted to Database - Fires after all changes have been posted to the database, but before they are permanently committed. Could be used to make additional changes that will be saved as part of the current transaction. Y Field Validation Displays a user entered error message based groovy logic validating the field value. The message is shown only when the validation logic returns false, and the logic is triggered only when tabbing out of the field on the user interface. Y Object Validation Commonly used where validation is needed across multiple related fields on the object. Triggered on the submit UI action. Y Object Workflows All Object Workflows are fired upon either record creation or update, along with the option of adding a custom groovy firing condition. Y Field Updates - change another field when a specified one changes. Intended as an easy way to set different run-time values (e.g. pick values for LOV's) plus the value field permits groovy logic entry. Y E-Mail Notification - sends an email notification to specified users/roles. Templates support using run-time value tokens and rich text. N Task Creation - for adding standard tasks for use in the worklist functionality. N Outbound Message - will create and send an XML payload of the related object SDO to a specified endpoint. N Business Process Flow - intended for approval using the seeded process, however can also trigger custom BPMN flows. N Global Functions Utility functions that can be called from any groovy code in Application Composer (across applications). Y Object Functions Utility functions that are local to the parent object. Usually triggered from within 'Buttons and Actions' definitions in Application Composer, although can be called from other code for that object (e.g. from a trigger). Y Add Custom Fields When adding custom fields there are a few places you can include groovy logic. Y Default Value - to add logic within setting the default value when new records are entered. Y Conditionally Updateable - to add logic to set the field to read-only or not. Y Conditionally Required - to add logic to set the field to required or not. Y Formula Field - Used to provide a new aggregate field that is entirely based on groovy logic and other field values. Y Simplified UI Layouts - Advanced Expressions Used for creating dynamic layouts for simplified UI pages where fields and regions show/hide based on run-time context values and logic. Also includes support for the depends-on feature as a trigger. USB modem could not mount on 12.04

I have a usb wimax modem. If I connect it at ubuntu 10.04 it has been detected and mounted as cd see here. From there I got that it is "iso96660" type and device location is /dev/sr1. But when I connect this usb modem in Ubuntu 12.04, it could not be mounted. So I have tried to find the file sr1 in this location /dev/ and could not found any-thing. But if disconnect and then re-connect the usb modem at this path /dev/, I saw a flickering of "sr1" named file for a certain time (1 sec) then it's dis-appear. Can anyone guide me to connect it step-by-step in Ubuntu 12.04?

Fixing Mobility Radeon HD3650 driver in 12.04 LTS

Okay, I know the subject has been discussed many times, but i dont find any of the instructions working. Most promising guide was here https://launchpad.net/~makson96/+archive/fglrx ive also tried https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI because since the driver installation was written on other sites as well, this page included a "patch" file, but since im unaware how to patch installations, im out of luck. If i understand correctly, the patch should fix the driver and eliminate constant error messages. My system is 64bit 12.04 LTS and card is Mobility Radeon HD3650. Usual installation of the driver results in weird display resoulution (1100x something, while it should be 1440x900) and even 3d games did not work. Can anyone give me any more pointers? Much appreciated!

Framework Folders and Duplicate File Names

I have been working with Framework folders a little bit in the past few days and found one unexpected behavior that is different from Contribution Folders (Folders_g). If you try and check a file into a Framework Folder that already exists in the folder it will allow it and rename the file for you. In Folders_g this would have generated an error and prevented you from checking in the file. A quick check of the Framework Folder configuration settings in the Application Administrator’s Guide for Content Server does not show a configuration parameter to control this. I'm still thinking about this and not sure if I like this new behavior or not. I guess from a user perspective this more closely aligns Framework Folders to how Windows handle duplicate file names, but if you are migrating from Folders_g and expect a duplicate file name to be rejected, this might cause you some problems.

Is the copy/paste approach professionally viable when working with the Google Maps API?

I find that I understand much of the Javascript concepts used in the Google Maps API code, but then again there is quite a bit that is way over my head in syntax. For example, the geocoder syntax seems to be of Ajax form, though I don't understand what is happening under the hood (especially with lines like results[0].geometry.location). I am able to modify the body of if (status == google.maps.GeocoderStatus.OK) for different purposes though. So, being that I am able to take various code from the Developer's Guide and rework it to an extent for my own purposes, all the while not fully understanding what Google Maps is actually doing, does this make me a copy-paste programmer? Is this a bad practice, or is this professionally viable? I am, of course, interested in learning as much as I can, but what if time-constraints outweigh the learning process?

Git bug branching convention

I've been following the successful Git branching model guide for most of my development. I still wonder if the way I handle bug tickets is correct. My current workflow: Once I accept a bug ticket I will do a git checkout -b bug/{ticket_number}, create a single commit as a fix and then checkout develop and do a git merge --no-ff. I'd love to hear from the experiences of others whether or not I am abusing the --no-ff option in this instance. If I am, could someone suggest a better approach?

Can't load any applications

After installing Eclipse, I wanted to try to enable the global unity menu for Eclipse. Following a guide on the web, I was to make a change to: sudo nano /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/menuproxies/libappmenu.so by changing Eclipse to Xclipse. After making that change, and then running sudo ldconfig. and even restarting, I can no longer open any application. I just see the application appear on the screen for a split second and then it disappears. So far I have noticed that I can no longer load Eclipse and Chrome. Anyone know how to fix this? I have tried changing Xclipse back to Eclipse and running the command sudo ldconfig, but it makes no difference.

What is the difference between Constant Vertex Attributes and Uniforms?

According to the OpenGL ES 2.0 Programming Guide: A constant vertex attribute is the same for all vertices of a primitive, and therefore only one value needs to be specified for all the vertices of a primitive. For uniforms the book states: ...any parameter to a shader that is constant across either all vertices or fragments (but that is not known at compile time) should be passed in as a uniform. I've always used uniforms for data that is constant for a primitive but now it appears that attributes can also be used in the same way. Is there more to constant vertex attribute than simply 'they are the same as uniforms'?

Looking to eventually build a smartphone app...

Hi all- I'm a young, inexperienced programmer (I've had a year of Java, some MATLAB, and HTML/CSS in school) but I've decided that to get better, I'm making it my goal to produce a simple smartphone app of some kind this year- probably either webOS or Android since I'm on a PC and can't afford a Mac just to write an iPhone app. So my question is, where do I start? I've read the threads about How to Write for Android and such, but I'm not sure I have enough Java experience to just jump right in. And then there's webOS which is based on JavaScript, correct? I guess I'd just like some input from more experienced folks. I have some Barnes and Noble book credit I'm looking to get rid of too, so if there's a guide you think would be useful, feel free to request. tl;dr: Programming newbie ultimately wants to build a simple smartphone app. Where do I start?

delete /var/cache/* How can I fix it?

I accidentally remove all files in /var/cache/ directory with sudo rm -rf command. Now I can not see the files in Trash to bring them back. I would like to know how bad is the situation if these files are removed? does ubuntu going to work normally and recreate the directories in cache again automatically? If not, which directories do I have to create in /var/cache/ manually to let everything work fine? I have already manually made apt and apache2 and debconf in cache directoy but I do not know if I miss more importand directory which needed to be created there. I hope somebody can guide me to fix this issue.
