• 2D grid with multiple types of objects

  This is my first post here in programmers.stackexchange (I'm a regular on SO). I hope this isn't too general. I'm trying a simple project to learn Java from something I've seen done in the past. Basically, it's an AI simulation where there are herbivorous and carnivorous creatures and both must try to survive. The part I am trying to come up with is that of the board itself. Let's assume very simple rules. The board must be of size X by Y and only one element can be in one place at one time. For example, a critter cannot be in the same tile as a food block. There can be obstacles (rocks, trees..), there can be food, there can be critters of any type. Assuming these rules, what would be one good way to represent this situation ? This is what I came up with and want suggestions if possible: Use multiple levels of inheritance to represent all the different possible objects (AbstractObject - (NonMovingObject - (Food, Obstacle) , MovingObject - Critter - (Carnivorous, Herbivorous))) and use polymorphism in a 2D array to store the instances and still have access to lower level methods.   I came across this error when i was trying to ajaxify my sharepoint site. After adding the AjaxifyMoss from the codeplex  developed by Richard Finn. And tried loading my site i got the error Error: The base type 'System.Web.UI.MasterPage' is not allowed for this page So  i decided to check the web.config and i noticed the SafeControl tag doesn't have the .Net 2.0 assembly included despite the fact i added both vsersios 2.0 and 3.5. Its possible the.Net  3.5 assebply overwrote the 2.0. Anyway after i added the below which is the 2.0 verison       <SafeControl Assembly="System.Web, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a" Namespace="System.Web.UI" TypeName="*" Safe="True" AllowRemoteDesigner="True" />  And refreshed my page. • Samba Server Make Multiple User Permissions Profiles

  I have a Samba file server running, and I was wondering how I could make multiple user accounts that have different permissions. For example, at the moment I have a user, smbusr, but when I ssh to the share, I can read, write, execute, and even navigate out of the samba directory and do stuff on the actual computer. This is bad because I want to be able to give out my IP so friends/family can use the server, but I don't want them to be able to do just anything. I want to lock the user in the samba share directory(and all the sub directories). Eventually I would like several profiles such as (smbusr_R, smbusr_RW, smbguest_R, smbguest_RW). I also have a second question related to this, is SSH the best method to connect from other unix machines? What about VPN? Or simply mounting like this: mount -t ext3 -o user=username //ipaddr/share /mnt/mountpoint Is that mounting command above the same thing as a vpn? This is really confusing me. Thanks for the help guys, let me know if you need to see any files, or need anymore information.

• Good ol fashioned debugging

  I have been helping out one of our new customers over the last day or two and I have even managed to get to the bottom of their problem FTW! They use BIEE and BIP and wanted to mount a BIP report in a dashboard page, so far so good, BIP does that! Just follow the instructions in the BIEE user guide. The wrinkle is that they want to enter some fixed instruction strings into the dashboard prompts to help the user. These are added as fixed values to the prompt as the default values so they appear first. Once the user makes a selection, the default strings disappear. Its a fair requirement but the BIP report chokes Now, the BIP report had been setup with the Autorun checkbox, unchecked. I expected the BIP report to wait for the Go button to be hit but it was trying to run immediately and failing. That was the first issue. You can not stop the BIP report from trying to run in a dashboard. Even if the Autorun is turned off, it seems that dashboard still makes the request to BIP to run the report. Rather than BIP refusing because its waiting for input it goes ahead anyway, I guess the mechanism does not check the autorun flag when the request is coming from the dashboard. It appears that between BIEE and BIP, they collectively ignore the autorun flag. A bug? might be, at least an enhancement request. With that in mind, how could we get BIP to not at least not fail? This fact was stumping me on the parameter error, if the autorun flag was being respected then why was BIP complaining about the parameter values it should not even be doing anything until the Go button is clicked. I now knew that the autorun flag was being ignored, it was a simple case of putting BIP into debug mode. I use the OC4J server on my laptop so debug msgs are routed through the dos box used to start the OC4J container. When I changed a value on the dashboard prompt I spotted some debug text rushing by that subsequently disappeared from the log once the operation was complete. Another bug? I needed to catch that text as it went by, using the print screen function with some software to grab multiple screens as the log appeared and then disappeared. The upshot is that when you change the dashboard prompt value, BIP validates the value against its own LOVs, if its not in the list then it throws the error. Because 'Fill this first' and 'Fill this second' ie fixed strings from the dashboard prompts, are not in the LOV lists and because the report is auto running as soon as the dashboard page is brought up, the report complains about invalid parameters. To get around this, I needed to get the strings into the LOVs. Easily done with a UNION clause: select 'Fill this first' from SH.Products Products UNION select Products."Prod Category" as "Prod Category" from SH.Products Products Now when BIP wants to validate the prompt value, the LOV query fires and finds the fixed string -> No Error. No data, but definitely no errors :0) If users do run with the fixed values, you can capture that in the template. If there is no data in the report, either the fixed values were used or the parameters selected resulted in no rows. You can capture this in the template and display something like. 'Either your parameter values resulted in no data or you have not changed the default values' Thats the upside, the downside is that if your users run the report in the BP UI they re going to see the fixed strings. You could alleviate that by having BIP display the fixed strings in top of its parameter drop boxes (just set them as the default value for the parameter.) But they will not disappear like they do in the dashboard prompts, see below. If the expected autorun behaviour worked ie wait for the Go button, then we would not have to workaround it but for now, its a pretty good solution. It was an enjoyable hour or so for me, took me back to my developer daze, when we used to race each other for the most number of bug fixes. I used to run a distant 2nd behind 'Bugmeister Chen Hu' but led the chasing pack by a reasonable distance.

• xgamma -display parameter for dual monitor setup

  I want to change gamma for my first monitor. Every time I invoke xgamma with different -display parameters it somehow points to my second monitor. But I want to modify first one. I tried these commands. The parameters I have used for -display are :0, :0.0, :0.1, :1.0, :1.1, :1. Only the first 2 works. But it points to my second monitor. Not the first one. (I'm guessing I could buy a larger drive if the price is right: I'm thinking that one day I'll need to grow the size of the array and that would be one less drive to replace with a larger one) then use mdadm to fail out the existing sdc, remove it and fit the new drive fdisk the new drive with the same size partition for the array as the old one had use mdadm to add the new drive into the array that sound OK?

• ERRNO 5 Input/Output Error

  Going up for my first ubuntu installation and encountered a critical error. Mind that I am installing on my Macbook Pro, and have already removed all other partitions. (I'm installing with a CD) My Ubuntu version is: "ubuntu-12.10-desktop-i386" So once the installation gets to something around "Finishing copying files", a great big "[ERRNO5] Input/Output Error" pops up on the screen. Obviously this halts and crashes the whole installation. Now, I've already run a disk check, memtest, and cpu load test, and all came up green. I have also redownloaded ubuntu twice, md5 match both times, and burnt four disks. None got past this error. If anyone could help me out, that would be greatly appreciated! Cheers!

  I am trying to get a monitor work with my Ubuntu laptop. The monitor is this cheap 27" Korean monitors which has a 2560x1440 resolution -- and nothing else. Here are some specifications of this monitor: 2560x1440 @60Hz Only one dual link DVI-D input -- no other input port (no HDMI or display port) no OSD no scalar reports corrupt EDID does 2560x1440 @60Hz, did I say that already? Anyways, the monitor works beautifully with my Ubuntu desktop which has an nVidia card with DVI output. However, I am having problem using this monitor with my laptop. After some searching around I found a few posts suggesting to use an active adaptor for mini display port, so I went and bought a mini display to dual link DVI-D adaptor.. When using this adaptor the monitor is recognized by nvidia-settings tool but with incorrect resolution information. As you can see the monitor is incorrectly recognized and there are no other resolution available to set. This post on ubuntu forums and this other post on overclock both suggest that the monitor is reporting corrupt EDID file. I have tried following their instructions, but so far I have not been able to display any image on the monitor from my laptop. The laptop I am using is an ASUS G75VW with a 1920x1080 screen. It has a VGA, an HDMI 1.4a, and a mini display port. The graphic card is an nvidia gforce gtx 660M with 2GB dedicated memory. I am running Ubuntu 12.10 on here which I upgrade from 12.04 a few weeks ago. As I said I have tried several suggestions, including specifying Modeline in xorg.conf and also linking to EDID files I found from those forum posts above. However, I am not sure if the EDID files I found are suitable for my monitor. I think the solution to my problem consist of obtaining the EDID file of my monitor and then fixing it and modifying xorg.conf to force nvidia driver to load the correct resolution. However, I am not sure what steps I need to take to do this. Here is the part of sudo xrandr --prop output that is related to this monitor: DP-1 connected 800x600+1920+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm SignalFormat: DisplayPort supported: DisplayPort ConnectorType: DisplayPort ConnectorNumber: 3 (0x00000003) _ConnectorLocation: 3 (0x00000003) 800x600 60.3*+ I was expecting to see the EDID file in this output as was mentioned in this post, but it is not there. After several hours of tweaking X configurations, I decided it was time to ask for help here. I would really appreciate if someone with experience regarding EDID and X configuration could give me a hand to solve this issue.

• Passing multiple Vertex Attributes in GLSL 130

  (note this question is closely related to this one however I didn't fully understand the accepted answer) To support videocards in laptops I have to rewrite my GLSL 330 shaders to GLSL 130. I'm trying to do this but somehow I don't get vertex attributes to work properly. My 330 shaders look like this: #version 330 layout(location = 0) in vec4 position; layout(location = 3) in vec4 color; smooth out vec4 theColor; void main() { gl_Position = position; theColor = color; } Now this explicit layout is not allowed in GLSL 130 so I referenced this page to see what the default layouts for some values would be. As you can see position should be the 0th vertex attribute and color should be the 3rd vertex attribute. Because this is a test case I had already configured my explicit layouts in the same way, which worked, so I now simply rewrote my shader to this and expected it to work: #version 130 smooth out vec4 theColor; void main() { gl_Position = gl_Vertex; theColor = gl_Color; } However this doesn't work, the value of gl_Color is always (1,1,1,1). So how should I pass multiple vertex attributes to my GLSL 130 shaders? For reference, this is how I set my vertex buffer object and attributes (I've just adapted this tutorial to JAVA+JOGL) gl.glBindBuffer(GL3.GL_ARRAY_BUFFER, vertex_buffer_id); gl.glEnableVertexAttribArray(0); gl.glEnableVertexAttribArray(3); gl.glVertexAttribPointer(0, 4 , GL3.GL_FLOAT, false, 0, 0); gl.glVertexAttribPointer(3, 4, GL3.GL_FLOAT, false, 0, 4*4*4); gl.glDrawArrays(GL3.GL_TRIANGLE_STRIP, 0, 4); gl.glDisableVertexAttribArray(0); gl.glDisableVertexAttribArray(3); EDIT I solved the problem by querying for the layout locations of position an color using glGetAttribLocation however I still don't understand why the 'hardcoded' values like gl_Color didn't work, can't I upload data in there as normal? • Quickly, syntax error: media_grid.show()

  i run the app and get this error. the little arrow points to the 'd', dont know what that means. plus i had the same error just before but on this line: from quickly.widgets.dictionary grid import DictionaryGrid the arrow pointed to the 'd' in grid as well. then i changed it to this: from quickly.widgets.dictionary_grid import DictionaryGrid i added a '_' in the middle. and now i have the syntax error in the question. • Permission issues causes Unity Segmentation fault

  I upgraded from 13.04 to 13.10 and I can boot to the unity-greeter and login just fine, but after login I just get a black screen with a cursor. I have tried following http://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI http://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonDriver and the manual install of the downloaded AMD drivers. All have the same affect. Also I have read Black screen after login with cursor I get a black screen after logging in ubuntu 13.04 black screen after login Ubuntu 13.10 - Black screen after login session Ubuntu 13.04 - Black screen with unresponsive cursor Upgrade to Ubuntu 13.04 Problem - Boots into Blank Black Screen All of which were no further help then the two support articles about ATI drivers So I switched back to the default drivers and went a little further into debugging, when I do ctrl+alt+F1 and login and try unity --debug > unity_start.log then ctrl+alt+F8 the screen stays black with a cursor and when I switch back ctrl+alt+F1 the contents of the log output are http://pastebin.com/rdQG4Hb0 However when I try sudo unity --debug > unity_start_root.log then ctrl+alt+F8, unity starts and the output of the log is http://pastebin.com/Yv4RD2j7 The fact that it starts as root tells be it is either a permissions issue of some required file or there is some setting that is specific to my user that is causing the SIGSEGV. So to narrow this down I activated the guest account and tried to login and got the same black screens with only a mouse cursor, so this tells me that it is not a configuration issue, but a permissions issue, so how do I narrow down which file has the wrong permissions? Also is there anything further that may help debug this issue? Ok after a few more hours of googling I found that if I add myself to the video group I can login and see the desktop, but there are lots of other permission related issues, so I am thinking something went wonky with PolicyKit during the upgrade, is there a way to reset PolicyKit settings for a user?

• Problem with external monitor on my asus u36sd laptop

  To connect my laptop to external monitor (for the dual monitor configuration) I have to perform 7 weird steps: Suspend OS (close notebook for that) Connect external monitor to vga output Open notebook and unsuspend OS (at this moment in laptop screen is native resolution but on external monitor resolution is lower than native (not same as at laptop)). Suspend OS (close notebook for that) Open notebook and unsuspend OS (at this moment laptop screen has resolution as a external monitor but external monitor has lower resolution that should be in native) Suspend OS (close notebook for that) Unsuspend OS (at this moment laptop and external monitor have native resolution which will should be) I just open and close hood of the laptop until external monitor and laptop screen become in native resolution. Adjusting monitors in displays not give me proper result. I have ASUS U36SD with optimus (disabled by acpicall) with 1366x768 screen and external monitor with 1280x1024 and latest ubuntu 11.10. How to perform laptop to work with external monitor without this weird actions?

In my case, since its my first time to this hosting/domain registration, I only knew of GoDaddy with regards to domain registration. • Dual monitors won't accept new settings

  I'm trying to use dual monitors but every time I try to change the display settings(external monitor is on the right of the laptop, not the left etc...) my screens go black, then my laptop screen will come back "normally" but my external monitor will just flash different shades of red or black. I cannot interact with anything on my laptop screen even though I can move my mouse around. Even when the monitors attempt to revert back the external monitor continues to flicker instead of reverting. The only way to stop it is to hard-boot but the new settings aren't saved. Also, when the dual monitors are both working my laptop screen has two vertical black bars along its sides. It's like Natty just decided I couldn't use the outer inch and a half of my laptop screen. My external monitor doesn't have this problem, and my laptop uses its full screen size when the external monitor is not hooked up. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? I have an HP Pavillion dv7 and an HP w2338h external monitor. Thanks!

My Intel i5 machines have all experienced daily (if not more frequent) freezes, but it's very difficult to report bugs now and policy instead is just for ubuntu to collect counts; no way for me to see that anything is (or is not) being worked on. I've just experienced a freeze and now on reboot I'm stuck in a cycle of "Ubuntu has an internal error" (presumably Ubuntu never experiences an external error...) do you want to report it? Yes. Oh another internal error... It looks like this report could contain useful information. Is there anyway to make sure it gets provided to the people who can fix it?

• Please Help with ATI Radeon 4250 and Xinerama

  I am using ubuntu 11.10 fresh install and I am having problems making the second screen to work, I remember before I was able to do it by extending the desktop to a larger number like 3840 X 1080 but since I am new I completely forgot how to do it, Now I have a philips 230 E monitor full 1920 X 1080 and a Toshiba tv HDMI and I want to activate the second monitor to be able to use Xinerama but I don't know how to go about this, I want to keep the Phillips as a primary monitor since it's the smaller one and use the TV from time to time to play videos movies and presentations. I installed all the additional drivers and don't know what else to do. I would prefer if I can use a list of exact commands to copy and paste onto the terminal since that is all I know how to use LOL . Thank you so much for your help. • OCS 2007 R2 User Properties Error Message

  When I attempted to configure one of our user’s Meeting settings using the Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2 Administration Tool   I received an Validation failed – Validation failed with HRESULT = 0XC3EC7E02 dialog box error message. I received the same error message when I tried to configure the user’s Telephony and Other settings. Using ADSI Edit, I compared the settings of an user that I had no problems configuring and the user that I had problems configuring.  For the user I had problems configuring, I noticed a trailing space after the last phone number digit for the user’s msRTCSIP-Line attribute. After I removed the trailing space for the attribute and waited for Active Directory replication to complete, I was able to configure the user’s Meeting settings (and Telephony/Other settings) without any problems. If you get the error message, check your user’s msRTCSIP-xxxxx attributes in Active Directory using ADSI Edit for any trailing spaces, typos, or any other mistakes.

  I have been using simple file share on Ubuntu 12.04 for several years not a problem now I have up graded to 14.04 all the problems error 255, tried all sights to fix the problem nothing works even went back to 12.04 still the same problem error 255 'net usershare' returned error 255: net usershare add: cannot convert name "Everyone" to a SID. The connection was refused. Maybe smbd is not running. There appears to be a bug with the new upgrade or has there been a new upgrade. Thanks for any help would be appreciated.

• Enabling "AllowDualLinkModes" in xorg.conf

  I'm using a GeForce GT 620 (which is dual-link compatable) and a DVI-I dual-link splitter to try to have a desktop extended onto two monitors. At the moment when I plug in the monitors, only the monitor on the female VGA marked "1" gets a signal, and the other screen gets nothing and only one screen is detected by nvidia-settings. After reading around, I have realised that my graphics card probably comes with dual-link disabled by default, and I can enable it by adding an "AllowDualLinkModes" option to my xorg.conf. This is the current state of my xorg.conf Section "Device" Identifier "Default Device" Option "NoLogo" "True" EndSection Where do I put the line about AllowDualLinkModes? Do I create a new Section?
