  This USB thing is driving me crazy. 2 problems in time span of 3 hours. • How can I receive more traffic? My VPS fails!!!

  I have a web site - photo gallery. About 400 photos. Site on Gallery 3. mySQL. Hosted on VPS from myhosting.com (CPU 1792 MHz, 2048 MB RAM). Everything seems to be ok, but there is one big problem. Once traffic reaches ~ 20 people (online) - website start loading really really slow. Actually website can't be loaded about 30-60 sec. What should I do? Buy more RAM / CPU on the same VPS? Move to a dedicated server or maybe myhosting.com just sucks? What do you recommend?

• Google indexed page a day before also reflecting in search but today everything vanish

  We had robots.txt which disallow all robots as we were in development. We are live now. We change robots.txt as per our requirement a day before. Submit indexes using Google Webmaster Tools index status. After this we can see proper result in search as well as Google images search was working as expected. Suddenly today all these things vanish from Google Search. Now again I can see old result i.e. under construction message. I checked robots.txt in Google Webmaster Tools, it's ok - no crawling errors. Kindly let me know what exactly happened? How I can inform this issue to Google?

• Fonts totally unreadable

  I've just upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 and my fonts are all just small rectangles with nothing in them. They are completely unreadable. EVEN THE FONTS IN THE TERMINAL. Thank god the fonts in my Chromium were ok, because I wouldn't be able to find this site or write this message. So far I've tried to use the Appearance - Font thing and it doesn't work. For some reason there was an error with the fonts during the installation. Please help, this is an utter nightmare...

• Saving an interface instance into a Bundle

  All I've have an interface that allows me to switch between different scenes in my Android game. When the home key is pressed, I am saving all of my states (score, sprite positions etc) into a Bundle. When re-launching, I am restoring all my states and all is OK - however, I can't figure out how to save my 'Scene', thus when I return, it always starts at the default screen which is the 'Main Menu'. How would I go about saving my 'Scene' (into a Bundle)? • What can I put in my software development blog to make it a good showcase of me?

  I have been itching to write a software development blog for some time now. The best advice I've received about blog writing is "Write the blog you would have want to read". Its good advice but its only half the story, Once you write a blog it becomes your showcase on the Internet, it is bound to come up on any search conducted by a future colleague or employer. It can be a good thing or it can do some serious damage. So if there are any hiring managers out there, can you give me a few pointers on what it is in a blog that give you a good impression about candidate and/or the kind of stuff that causes you to throw the candidate's resume to the nearest bean? Does a blog have to come up with a clever piece of code every week? (Don’t think I can manage it) Is it OK to blog more then not about development methods to improved quality and productivity (have a lot of ideas about that). Can I blog about stuff I did not try first hand but seems noteworthy?

• Error: no such partition help!

  Ok so i had Ubuntu installed on dual boot with windows 7, i decided i liked it, btu i did not want the dual boot option so i decided to uninstall it. no whenever i turn on my computer the "error: no such partition" screen shows up and i cant do anything at all. i tried restarting it and booting from a windows recovery disc to fix the mbr but my bios no wont load i cant change the boot order i cant manually boot or anything, it just goes straight to the "error: no such partition" screen. can someone please help me?

• Hard Copies VS Soft Copies

  Where do you draw the line and say, "OK, I'm actually going to print out this piece of code, spec, formula, or other info and carry it around but these pieces can stay on disk." Well, more importantly why do you draw the line there? I've encountered this a number of times and have some sort of vague conceptions beyond "oh now I'm REALLY stuck, better print this out." I've also found some quicksheets of basic specs to be handy. Really though, I have no particular logic behind what is useful to physically have available in the design and development process. I have a great pile of 'stuff' papers that seemed at least partially relevant at the time, but I only really use about a third of them ever and often end up wishing I had different info on hand. Edit: So this is what I'm hearing in a nutshell: Major parts of the design pattern Common, fairly static and prominently useful code (reference or specs) Some representation of data useful in collaborating or sharing with team Extreme cases of tough problem solving Overwhelmingly,almost never print anything.

• XAMPP: Deamon is already running, but it's NOT apache

  This one is giving me a headache... I have installed XAMPP for Linux 1.7.7 on Ubuntu 12.10. I haven't installed the latest version because of the new security "feature" which makes XAMPP so secure I can't get it running... But that's another story. After it installed and ran ok for a couple of months, I now get the famous "XAMPP: Another web server daemon is already running." error while starting XAMPP. Now I've googled extensively and can rule out the following: There is no other Apache installation, just XAMPP There are no apache or apache 2 services running There are no services running that use port 80 (checked with netstat -an grep -w 80) I have also done a fresh install of xampp 1.7.7, but that gives me the same result. I think I have tried every solution on the first two result-pages of google and am nowhere nearer to a solution. Can anyone give me pointers on how to find the mysterious "Webdeamon" that is already running?

• How to recover data from NTFS partition that was made into a Swap partition?

  I have extremely important stuff on my windows partition which during the ubuntu 10.10 installation,when it said that I should create something called swap space, I selected it to be a swap space (without even knowing what it actually meant) The Grub2 doesn't show up so I don't get a choice to boot Ubuntu or Windows. I don't get my windows partition as a removable device in Ubuntu either. When I go to disk utility and select the sda2 (i.e.. my windows partition) and click edit partition and select HPFS/NTFS for the type and tick bootable and click OK the small processing sign keep on rotating on the bottom right of the sda2 in the chart and after about 10 to 15 minutes it gives an unknown error and thus, I am still unable to use my windows. I am even worse than a beginner who doesn't know a thing about Ubuntu so please be patient and help me out.

• What happened this type of naming convention?

  I have read so many docs about naming conventions, most recommending both Pascal and Camel naming conventions. Well, I agree to this, its ok. This might not be pleasing to some, but I am just trying to get you opinion why you name you objects and classes in a certain way. What happened to this type of naming conventions, or why are they bad? I want to name a struct, and i prefix it with struct. My reason, so that in IntelliSense, I see all the struct in one place, and anywhere I see the struct prefix, I know it's a struct: structPerson structPosition anothe example is the enum, although I may not prefix it with "enum", but maybe with "enm": enmFruits enmSex again my reason is so that in IntelliSense, I see all my enums in one place. Because, .NET has so many built in data structures, I think this helps me do less searching. Please I used .NET in this example, but I welcome language agnostic answers.

• Code refactoring with Visual Studio 2010 Part-4

  I have been writing few post with code refactoring features in Visual Studio 2010. This post also will be part of series and this post will be last of the series. In this post I am going explain two features 1) Encapsulate Field and 2) Extract Interface. Let’s explore both features in details. Encapsulate Field: This is a nice code refactoring feature provides by Visual Studio 2010. With help of this feature we can create properties from the existing private field of the class. Let’s take a simple example of Customer Class. In that I there are two private field called firstName and lastName. Below is the code for the class. public class Customer { private string firstName; private string lastName; public string Address { get; set; } public string City { get; set; } } Now lets encapsulate first field firstName with Encapsulate feature. So first select that field and goto refactor menu in Visual Studio 2010 and click on Encapsulate Field. Once you click that a dialog box will appear like following. Now once you click OK a preview dialog box will open as we have selected preview reference changes. I think its a good options to check that option to preview code that is being changed by IDE itself. Dialog will look like following. Once you click apply it create a new property called FirstName. Same way I have done for the lastName and now my customer class code look like following. public class Customer { private string firstName; public string FirstName { get { return firstName; } set { firstName = value; } } private string lastName; public string LastName { get { return lastName; } set { lastName = value; } } public string Address { get; set; } public string City { get; set; } } So you can see that its very easy to create properties with existing fields and you don’t have to change anything there in code it will change all the stuff itself. Extract Interface: When you are writing software prototype and You don’t know the future implementation of that then its a good practice to use interface there. I am going to explain here that How we can extract interface from the existing code without writing a single line of code with the help of code refactoring feature of Visual Studio 2010. For that I have create a Simple Repository class called CustomerRepository with three methods like following. public class CustomerRespository { public void Add() { // Some code to add customer } public void Update() { //some code to update customer } public void Delete() { //some code delete customer } } In above class there are three method Add,Update and Delete where we are going to implement some code for each one. Now I want to create a interface which I can use for my other entities in project. So let’s create a interface from the above class with the help of Visual Studio 2010. So first select class and goto refactor menu and click Extract Interface. It will open up dialog box like following. Here I have selected all the method for interface and Once I click OK then it will create a new file called ICustomerRespository where it has created a interface. Just like following. Here is a code for that interface. using System; namespace CodeRefractoring { interface ICustomerRespository { void Add(); void Delete(); void Update(); } } Now let's see the code for the our class. It will also changed like following to implement the interface. public class CustomerRespository : ICustomerRespository { public void Add() { // Some code to add customer } public void Update() { //some code to update customer } public void Delete() { //some code delete customer } } Isn't that great we have created a interface and implemented it without writing a single line of code. • Open Grid Engine or Akka/Something more fault tolerant?

  My use case is that I have a pipeline of independent, stand alone programs, that I want to execute in a certain order on specific pieces of data that our output from previous pipeline stages. The pipeline is entirely linear and doesn't do anything in terms of alternate paths through the pipe. I'm currently using SGE to do this and it works OK, however occasionally a job will overstep it's memory bounds, fail, and all jobs that require that output data will fail. The pipe needs to be restarted in that case, and it seems that whatever is providing the fault tolerance in akka might solve that for me?

• I'm having trouble learning

  I'm only 13 but i'm genuinely interested in CS and would really like it if I could actually accomplish it. I've read books on C++ and C#, but ALL of them are the same!! They all say "Ok so since you have no prior knowledge in this what so ever, write a snippet that will do this and then make a GUI and then throw it into the Priafdhsu hfad then add the program and then program your own compiler to do some stuff". It's really getting annoying. I've payed near $40 (via Paypal) on ebooks that supposedly taught people to program with no prior knowledge. ALL OF THEM EXPECT ME TO ALREADY KNOW THE LANGUAGE. Is there something that I'm missing or am I suppose to be born with the property of CS? I would very much appreciate it if someone could explain this to me or possibly refer me to a tutorial on Programming Theory that starts from below ground zero as I have know knowledge in CS at all.

• Black screen after upgrading from 13.04 to 13.10

  Just upgraded from 13.04 to 13.10 and all I got was a black screen. The hardware I'm running is Asus Zenbook UX31A (Intel GPU). I do hear that the login screen drums do play, so the system does boot to login screen. When I try to boot using kernel 3.11.0-12 recovery mode, it tells me "initctl: event failed". Then if I go on an press ctrl+alt+f2, log in and command startx, it dies because "Fatal server error: no screens found". Here are some logs from /var/log/Xorg.0.log http://pastebin.com/ZQasUKJx Kernel 3.8.0-31 work ok, as did things before the upgrade.

• Configuring A Subdomain (cPanel) - www works, subdomain on it's own doesn't

  I've created a sub domain on my website using cPanel at test.mydomain.com, and this created a folder in my main 'www' directory called test. In this folder is a folder called cgi-bin, and it seems to redirect the page to say "It works!", but when I upload my own index.html file to the test directory it keeps showing http://test.mydomain.com/cgi-sys/defaultwebpage.cgi instead of the index file. If I go to www.test.mydomain.com then it works OK. How do I host my content at the sub domain? It's my first time setting one up so I'm a bit lost.

• How do I prevent useless content load on the page in responsive design?

  In responsive design, elements are hidden in the page with @media queries and display: none in CSS. Ok. In my design however browsers that have less than 800px in width should avoid loading some content at all. When accessed with on a device with more than 800px of screen, the page loads fully. In mobile devices or even on desktop with less than 800px of width some content is hidden. I want to make the page load faster for low-resolution devices and avoid loading chunks of content that the user will never see. How can I go about this?

• Better way to set up samba bridge?

  I have an old ubuntu laptop hooked up to between my wireless network and a wired media player box. I had previously shared my wireless network connection so the media player had internet access (ie. via nat) because it was a different subnet it could not access the file shares on the wireless network. To get around this I mounted the drives from the wireless network on the laptop and re-shared them with samba. This worked ok but had some drawbacks, it seemed slow and if network computers were turned off when the laptop rebooted I had to manually mount the shares. I've just re-installed with the latest ubuntu and was wondering if there is a better way to do this. Is there some way to bridge so the media player appears to be on the wireless network? Would this give better performance? Any other options? I'm also thinking there might be some samba options that could buffer files?

• Assignment of roles in communication when sides could try to cheat

  Assume two nodes in a peer-to-peer network initiating a communication. In this communication, one node has to serve as a "sender", another as a "receiver" (role names are arbitrary here). I'd like the nodes to assert either role with approximately equal probability. That is, in N communications with various other nodes a given node would assume the "sender" role roughly N/2 times. Since there's no third-party arbiter available, nodes should agree on their roles by exchanging messages. The catch is that we can encounter a rogue node which would try to become the "receiver" in most or all cases, and coax the other side to always serve as a "sender". I'm looking for an algorithm to assign roles to sides of communication so that no side could get a predetermined role with high probability. It's OK for the side which is trying to cheat to fail to communicate.

• Ubuntu slow on HP 2000 notebook with Apu e1-1200

  I am using HP 2000 notebook which initially came with Windows 7 64bit. It has 4gb ram, AMD APU E1-1200 (1.4ghz) with Radeon 7310. With Windows it worked ok, so I decided to switch to Ubuntu. I installed 13.04 64bit at first, but responsiveness wasn't that good (opening windows, menus, Firefox, dash search) even if it was way better during the testing from live USB. I tried different kind of drivers for graphic card, 13.6beta, 13.4, fgrlx proprietary, upgraded kernel but the situation was the same. Then I tried installing 32bit version but the results were identical. After that I tried LTS version 12.04 and Xubuntu 13.04.. Responsiveness wasn't that different at all. Not sure what to do, and I wouldn't want to go back to Windows. This machine is not a beast, but it should be enough to deal with Unity or Xfce without troubles. Oh yes, I have insydeH20 BIOS with not so many options at my disposal. Thanks and best regards,

• What's the location of a personal 'gtkrc' file in Ubuntu 12.04?

  Good day everyone! I am currently writting a software that makes easy to change default cursor theme with a few clicks. At this point it works well, but applications like Firefox or Lazarus IDE remain with the DMZ-White cursor, everything else is ok. I noticed that when I change the default cursor using my software, and later change the 'personalized' cursor theme using Ubuntu Tweak, it does the job, and the new theme is now applied everywhere. So, what file is need to modify in order to change 'personal' cursor theme? If my software can do this, that would be great! I found that 'gtkrc' is a file where settings of GTK+ are stored. I searched in my home folder but I can't find yet. Can you help me with this, noble people of Ubuntu? :)

• Strange 401 (Unauthorized) when calling a WCF Service

  A WCF Service we call from BizTalk using WCF BasicHTTP usually works fine but all of a sudden it started returning 401 errors for some calls while others continued working as expected so it could not have been a "real" 401. The difference was the size of the message. One parameter of the service is a rather complex object. In the cases we got a 401 it got quite big (containing a lot of customer-data), say 5 MB. So we turned on tracking. The messages we traced out where about 20MB. Not too big for WCF one should suppose... A bit of research led us to increasing maxItemsInObjectGraph in the behaviours but that did not help. The service we call is in the same network as we are and is a WCF service. So we tried changing from BasicHTTP to net.tcp and Bingo! Ok, we had to use CustomBinding in BizTalk to set all the Quotas, etc. but it worked in the end.

• Ubuntu doesn't boot after 11.10 upgrade from 11.04

  Had this problem earlier: Crash after update to 11.10, from 11.04; ran the solution and had everything updated and upgraded. • Why the amount of 'indexed' images can go down?

  I have a site with several thousand of images. All those images included into the sitemap submitted to Google Webmaster Tools. The amount of 'submitted' images is OK, but the amount of 'indexed' is significantly lower than the amount of 'submitted' and it is going DOWN! I'd understand if not all of my images got indexed (however it is also not clear and very frustrating for me) but I can not understand how the indexing can go in the negative direction?! All the images stays on their places. And pages containing them stays unchanged. At least they intended to be. Any thoughts?
