• How advanced are author-recognition methods?

  From a written text by an author if a computer program analyses the text, how much can a computer program tell today about the author of some (long enough to be statistically significant) texts? Can the computer program even tell with "certainty" whether a man or a woman wrote this text based solely on the contents of the text and not an investigation such as ip numbers etc? I'm interested to know if there are algorithms in use for instance to automatically know whether an author was male or female or similar characteristics of an author that a computer program can decide based on analyses of the written text by an author. It could be useful to know before you read a message what a computer analyses says about the author, do you agree? If I for instance get a longer message from my wife that she has had an accident in Nigeria and the computer program says that with 99 % probability the message was written by a male author in his sixties of non-caucasian origin or likewise, or by somebody who is not my wife, then the computer program could help me investigate why a certain message differs in characteristics. There can also be other uses for instance just detecting outliers in a geographically or demographically bounded larger data set. Scam detection is the obvious use I'm thinking of but there could also be other uses. Are there already such programs that analyse a written text to tell something about the author based on word choice, use of pronouns, unusual language usage, or likewise?

• Cheating Incident

  Hi Everyone -I just wanted to give you a heads-up on some recent actions that we had to take regarding someone who tried to cheat on a test.Just last week, we had a candidate who was bold enough to try to take screen-shots during the exam using his cell phone. Of course this is completely against Oracle Certification Program policy. This candidate's exam was immediately stopped, and the candidate was ejected from the testing center.Of course it doesn't end there. This candidate was also suspended permanently from the Oracle Certification Program, and all of his previous certifications were revoked. He is no longer eligible to participate in the program. Unfortunately - if this candidate works for an Oracle partner company, then his company will also likely become aware of his indiscretion - particularly when they request validation of his certification.Although this particular candidate was blatantly involved in content theft, any type of cheating incident is very unfortunate. It erodes the value of the certification credentials, and hurts everyone involved. • Is this kind of Design by Contract useless?

  I've just started informatics university and I'm attending a programming course about C(++). The programming professor prefers to teach very few things (in 3 month we have just reached the functions topic) and connect every topic with a type of programming design that somehow is similar to the Design by Contract design. Basically what he ask us to do is to write every exercise with comments Pre-conditions, Post-conditions and Invariants that should prove the correctness of each program we write. But this doesn't make any sense to me. I mean, ok: maybe writing down your thoughts prevent you from doing some mistakes, but if this is all an abstract thing, then if your program intuition is wrong you'll write your program wrong and then you'll also write pre and post conditions wrong probably auto convincing your self about its correctness. Most of the time, both me and other students have written programs that seemed ok and that had correct pre and post condition too. But at the moment of testing it was just completely wrong. I had some experience before this course of programming and I had written a lot of line of code before and I found myself comfortably with just writing a program and unit test it. It take less time to accomplish and is less "abstract" than just thinking about what every single piece of your program should do in every case (which is kinda like mentally testing it). Finally, all this pre and post conditions takes me like 80% of the total time of the exercise. It's harder to think about putting down this pre and post correct than to write the program itself. Since we are like the only course of the only university probably in the entire world that makes this things, could someone please tell me how should I manage this thing? Am I right thinking that this doesn't worth anything? Should I change university? (there are like double of the people attending that course and it seems that usually very few people passes the exam the first year). Should I convince myself it's method is right?

• Eclipse Juno failing to start with Java returning 1 error report

• How common is prototyping as the first stage of development?

  I've been taking some software design courses in the past few semesters, and while I see the benefit in a lot of the formalism, I feel like it doesn't tell me anything about the program itself: You can't tell how the program is going to operate from the Use Case spec, even though it discusses what the program can do. You can't tell anything about the user experience from the requirements document, even though it can include quality requirements. Sequence diagrams are a good description of how the software works as the call stack, but are very limited, and give a highly partial view of the overall system. Class diagrams are great for describing how the system is built, but are utterly useless in helping you figure out what the software needs to be. Where in all this formalism is the bottom line: how the program looks, operates, and what experience it gives? Doesn't it make more sense to design off of that? Isn't it better to figure out how the program should work via a prototype and strive to implement it for real? I know that I'm probably suffering from being taught engineering by theoreticians, but I need to ask, do they do this in the industry? How do people figure out what the program actually is, not what it should conform to? Do people prototype a lot, or do they mostly use the formal tools like UML and I just didn't get the hang of using them yet?

• Why am I not getting an sRGB default framebuffer?

  I'm trying to make my OpenGL Haskell program gamma correct by making appropriate use of sRGB framebuffers and textures, but I'm running into issues making the default framebuffer sRGB. Consider the following Haskell program, compiled for 32-bit Windows using GHC and linked against 32-bit freeglut: import Foreign.Marshal.Alloc(alloca) import Foreign.Ptr(Ptr) import Foreign.Storable(Storable, peek) import Graphics.Rendering.OpenGL.Raw import qualified Graphics.UI.GLUT as GLUT import Graphics.UI.GLUT(($=)) main :: IO () main = do (_progName, _args) <- GLUT.getArgsAndInitialize GLUT.initialDisplayMode $= [GLUT.SRGBMode] _window <- GLUT.createWindow "sRGB Test" -- To prove that I actually have freeglut working correctly. -- This will fail at runtime under classic GLUT. GLUT.closeCallback $= Just (return ()) glEnable gl_FRAMEBUFFER_SRGB colorEncoding <- allocaOut $ glGetFramebufferAttachmentParameteriv gl_FRAMEBUFFER gl_FRONT_LEFT gl_FRAMEBUFFER_ATTACHMENT_COLOR_ENCODING print colorEncoding allocaOut :: Storable a => (Ptr a -> IO b) -> IO a allocaOut f = alloca $ \ptr -> do f ptr peek ptr On my desktop (Windows 8 64-bit with a GeForce GTX 760 graphics card) this program outputs 9729, a.k.a. gl_LINEAR, indicating that the default framebuffer is using linear color space, even though I explicitly requested an sRGB window. This is reflected in the rendering results of the actual program I'm trying to write - everything looks washed out because my linear color values aren't being converted to sRGB before being written to the framebuffer. On the other hand, on my laptop (Windows 7 64-bit with an Intel graphics chip), the program prints 0 (huh?) and I get an sRGB default framebuffer by default whether I request one or not! And on both machines, if I manually create a non-default framebuffer bound to an sRGB texture, the program correctly prints 35904, a.k.a. gl_SRGB. Why am I getting different results on different hardware? Am I doing something wrong? How can I get an sRGB framebuffer consistently on all hardware and target OSes?

• Why does python easy install give me "permission denied" errors?

• C Programming matrix

  In this program the user enters the # of columns of the matrix and then the entries of the matrix. So, for example, if the user enters 2 for column # and 1 2 3 4 for entries then the program develops a 2 by 2 matrix with 1 2 3 4 as entries. My program works perfectly in such a case. However, if the user for example had only entered 1 2 3 then my program makes a matrix with garbage values. I would like the program in such a case to exit the program. • Dynamic Layout in BI Publisher

  This blog tells about how to set dynamic layout of a BI Publisher report.Lets take a simple business scenario.If user wants to view the output in either PDF or EXCEL.Two ways we can achieve this.  1) If the output type is not a program parameter the we can choose the layout type at the time of submission in the SRS window. 2) If the report output type is a parameter we need to choose the layout at the time of submission of the request using FND_REQUEST.ADD_LAYOUT. Here I am discussing the second approach.Following components I have created for this scenario. 1) XXCUST - Sample Report : This program actually generates the XML data.   Recently, @StaffOfGeeks announced to a select group of bloggers, the Geekswithblogs.net Influencer Program.  Here is a little detail about the program. Description (from Influencer Page): Geekswithblogs.net is a community of bloggers passionate about contributing information to the world of developers and IT professionals. Our bloggers are some of the best in the world and receive honors on a regular basis for outside companies (such as the Microsoft© MVP Program). The Geekswithblogs.net Influencer Program is our way as Staff of Geeks to show our appreciation for those bloggers who have the greatest influence on the site. Each influencer in the program is awarded by the amount of posts, views, and comments they receive on their posts in the previous quarter. Each quarter, we select the top 25 bloggers of influence and give them special access to products and services we have obtained through our network of partners. Here is how it works.  Each quarter we select the top 25 bloggers bases on the amount of posts that created in that quarter, and apply points to the views and comments those posts receive.  The selection is purely off of the numbers, we do not select any based on any other basis.  In fact in the first round, several of our key bloggers did not qualify in the top 25.  Though they are still loved dearly, we wanted a program that anyone could be a part of if they put in the hard work.   Did you know you can pass your Windows credentials to SQL Server even when working from a workstation that is not joined to a domain? Here is how … From Start, then click All Programs, find Microsoft SQL Server (version 2005 or 2008). Once there, do a right-click on SQL Server Management Studio, then click on Properties Now, follow below to modify the entry for Target: Now the real task (we will be using the runas command) … Modify the shortcut’s target as follows, and remember to replace <domain\user> with the values that correspond to your environment : x64 SQL Server 2008 C:\Windows\System32\runas.exe /user:<domain\user> /netonly "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\binn\VSShell\Common7\IDE\Ssms.exe -nosplash" SQL Server 2005 C:\Windows\System32\runas.exe /user:<domain\user> /netonly "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\binn\VSShell\Common7\IDE\SqlWb.exe -nosplash" x86 SQL Server 2008 C:\Windows\System32\runas.exe /user:<domain\user> /netonly "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\binn\VSShell\Common7\IDE\Ssms.exe -nosplash" SQL Server 2005 C:\Windows\System32\runas.exe /user:<domain\user> /netonly "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\binn\VSShell\Common7\IDE\SqlWb.exe -nosplash" Since we modified the shortcut, we will need to fix the icon for SSMS.  We will fix it by pressing the Change Icon… button and pointing to the original “icon” providers.
