  • R: How to get a stack trace from the snow package

    How can I get a stack trace back from a snow node after an error occurs? I am using the snow package (version 0.3-3) on R 2.10.1 and I'm getting errors when I use parSapply that do not occur when I use sapply. Snow is nice enough to give me the error message but it would be much more useful for me to have the kind of stack trace you can get from traceback(). So far I have tried: options(showWarnCalls = T, showErrorCalls = T) setDefaultClusterOptions(outfile = "/dev/tty") and options(error=traceback) setDefaultClusterOptions(outfile = "/dev/tty") without luck. I'm currently just testing with a local cluster ie: makeSOCKcluster(c("localhost","localhost")) but I will eventually be using an MPI cluster. Thanks.

    hello to all, my client wants to play a flash video in their website. just to make sure i understand correctly, i need to: 1. create an FLV file 2. use either some flv player or wrap the flv inside swf questions: 1. the player option - will visitor have to download /install it or is it install only once, in the website itself? any FREE player you can recommend the will ensure cross browser compatibility? swf option: will i need the flash application in order to do the wrapping? will i be able to later use something like flashobject library for the actual embedding? what are the main considerations for choosing between the two options , if indeed these are the options? any help would be highly appreciated. have a nice day and let's pray for a lot of goals today :-)

  • Ideas for loading initial data in an iPhone application?

    Hi all, In my app I want to load some initial data to show the user how it works. The app uses a CoreData managed sqllite db. SO far I've thought of 3 options: Write code into a class to programmatically create the data. Create a xml file in the apps resources and load through a NSXmlParser whose delegate creates the entries in the sqllite db. Same as option #2, but use a json file and bring in a 3rd party lib to read it. Are there other options I have not found yet? and given that I'm talking about perhaps 6 records per table when there are 3 tables, which would you choose?

  • How do I design a web service (microsoft) that can be consumed by multiple end points?

    My company is planning to implement a solution in multiple applications that will help to validate mailing addresses at the point of data entry. We're using UPS's Extended Address Validation (XAV) web service API to validate the addresses. Our current plan is to build a .NET web service that can be used to communicate between our applications and the UPS API. We have applications in VB6, classic ASP, and .NET 2.0, so we'd like to implement a solution that can be easily consumed by each of these programming environments. What are our (Microsoft) options for designing a web service that can be consumed by multiple clients? In particular, is there a way to design a single web service that can respond with JSON (in case we want to validate our web page using javascript) in addition to XML? I'm new to designing web services and want to make sure we consider all of our options. I've heard terms like asmx, WCF, OData, etc., but I don't know which frameworks will support what we're trying to do and where to start.

  • Java or Python distributed compute job (on a student budget)?

    I have a large dataset (c. 40G) that I want to use for some NLP (largely embarrassingly parallel) over a couple of computers in the lab, to which i do not have root access, and only 1G of user space. I experimented with hadoop, but of course this was dead in the water-- the data is stored on an external usb hard drive, and i cant load it on to the dfs because of the 1G user space cap. I have been looking into a couple of python based options (as I'd rather use NLTK instead of Java's lingpipe if I can help it), and it seems distributed compute options look like: Ipython DISCO After my hadoop experience, i am trying to make sure i try and make an informed choice -- any help on what might be more appropriate would be greatly appreciated. Amazon's EC2 etc not really an option, as i have next to no budget.

    Say I have two std::set<std::string>s. The first one, old_options, needs to be merged with additional options, contained in new_options. I can't just use std::merge (well, I do, but not only that) because I also check for doubles and warn the user about this accordingly. To this effect, I have void merge_options( set<string> &old_options, const set<string> &new_options ) { // find duplicates and create merged_options, a stringset containing the merged options // handle duplicated the way I want to // ... old_options = merged_options; } Is it better to use std::swap( merged_options, old_options ); or the assignment I have? Is there a better way to filter duplicates and return the merged set than consecutive calls to std::set_intersection and std::set_union to detect dupes and merge the sets? I know it's slower than one traversal and doing both at once, but these sets are small (performance is not critical) and I trust the Standard more than I trust myself.

  • php download file slows

    OK first off thanks for your time I wish I could give more than one point for this question. Problem: I have some music files on my site (.mp3) and I am using a php file to increment a database to count the number of downloads and to point to the file to download. For some reason this method starts at 350kb/s then slowly drops to 5kb/s which then the file says it will take 11hrs to complete. BUT if I go directly to the .mp3 file my browser brings up a player and then I can right click and "save as" which works fine complete download in 3mins. (Yes both during the same time for those that are thinking it's my connection or ISP and its not my server either.) So the only thing that I've been playing around with recently is the php.ini and the .htcaccess files.   • Implement Combobox/Option Menu funcionality on an iPhone interface?

    I want to give a list of choices on an iPhone GUI that works like a Combobox/Option menu. It needs to display the current selection, but on tapping it you should be able to change the current selection which will trigger a refresh of the screen. The option menu is letting the user choose which category a search is being performed under. So there is a default category and there are about 6 other choices. Idea 1: Use a label or button and when clicked on a new screen overlays that has all 6 options in a tableview, clicking on one closes the overlay screen and goes back to the main page with the updated value displayed. Idea 2: Should I use a totally different but native iPhone GUI widget like a Navbar at the bottom of the screen to reflect the different options?

    I am writing a .NET 2.0 based desktop client that will send large files ( well largish under 2GB) to a server. Need to develop the server as well. Server can be on any technology It should be secure so an underlying SSL stream is needed What are my options. Any obvious caveats etc I should be aware of To my mind the simplest solution is to open a tcp\ip connection over SSL to the server and send n packets each of size M bytes and then have the server append the chunks to the file and finally send an EOF packet as well IS this horrible. Will the perf suck on the server with all these disk writes What are any other clever options. I am limited to .NET 2.0 on the client if I did move to a WCF client will it buy be something magical and cool for this scenario Thanks

  • How can install sqlite-ruby on linux when sqlite3 is not in /usr/local ?

    I am trying to install sqlite3 and sqlite-ruby (ruby 1.8.6) on a linux box where I do not have root. I downloaded the sqlite3 source, binaries, and shared library and placed them all in a directory called sqlite3 I then try to install sqlite-ruby using gem install sqlite-ruby --with-sqlite-dir=the_path_sqlite/sqlite3 but I keep getting the error... checking for main() in -lsqlite... no checking for sqlite.h... no * extconf.rb failed * Could not create Makefile due to some reason, probably lack of necessary libraries and/or headers. Check the mkmf.log file for more details. You may need configuration options.     I'm trying to give my plugin callback functionality, and I'd like for it to operate in a somewhat traditional way: myPlugin({options}, function() { /* code to execute */ }); or myPlugin({options}, anotherFunction()); How do I handle that parameter in the code? Is it treated as one full entity? I'm pretty sure I know where I'd place the executory code, but how do I get the code to execute?   • LALR(1) or GLR on Windows - Alternatives to Bison++ / Flex++ that are current?

    I have been using the same version of bison++ (1.21-8) and flex++ (2.3.8-7) since 2002. I'm not looking for an alternative to LALR(1) or GLR at this time, just looking for the most current options. Is anyone aware of any later ports of these than the original that aren't Cygwin dependent? What are other folks using in Windows environments for C++ compiler development (besides ANTLR or Boost.spirit)? Commercial options are ok, if you have firsthand experience. I do need to compile on Linux as well.

    Hi guys. I'm looking to create an options table in my db that makes every record a system option, so I can work with a little number of fields. My db has the following structure: 3 columns named id, name, and value The following data is inserted as an example: +--+-----------+--------------------------+ |id|name |value | +--+-----------+--------------------------+ | 1|uri |www.example.com | | 2|sitename |Working it out | | 3|base_folder|/folder1/folder2/ | | 4|slogan |Just a slogan for the site| +--+-----------+--------------------------+ That way I can include a large number of customizable system options very easily. The problem is that I don't know how to retrieve them. How do I get the value of uri and store it as a var? And better yet, how do I get, for exmaple, values of id 1 and 4 only without making a query each time? (I assume multiple queries are useless and a pretty ugly method.) I know the question is pretty basic but I'm lost here. I'd really appreciate your answer!

Is it possible to create hash with methods as hash values ?

With typical, I mean stuff like reading the value of the selected radio button in a group or replacing elements in a selection list. I haven't found them in the documentation but I admit that method overloading can make doc browser kind of tricky.
