    Here's the abstract from my JavaOne talk: There are some situations in which it is necessary to call native code (C/C++ compiled code) from Java applications. This session describes how to do this efficiently and how to performance-tune the resulting applications. The objectives for the session are: Explain reasons for using native code in Java applications Describe pitfalls of calling native code from Java Discuss performance-tuning of Java apps that use native code I'll cover how to call native code from Java, debugging native code, and then I'll dig into performance tuning the code. The talk is not going too deep on performance tuning - focusing on the JNI specific topics; I'll do a bit more about performance tuning in my OpenWorld talk later in the day.

    Has anyone of you guys integrated or is thinking about integrating either admob, MS pubCenter, adwhirl or any other advertising provider into your apps? Please share your experience... Who pays best? Any regulations? Any problems with getting the app approved by Microsoft Market? If you chose Admob: Which plugin do you suggest? This or that or another one? Any experiences in Europe or Germany? (MS pubCenter is US only so far) Edit: I think we discussed enough about acceptance of mobile advertisement. Let's focus now on the questions I asked.   • Can the overuse of custom taglibs disrupt the outsourcing of html designers?

    Yesterday me and a friend were talking about the overuse of custom taglibs! We create taglibs for everything! We create taglibs in order to wrap jQuery UI elements (tabs, button, etc), and other plugins elements as well. We often wrap them together in a single component. We use taglibs in a point that we almost have no pure html within the body tag. Our question is: is this a healthy habit??? Imagine two situations: 1) We hire an html designer and have the cost of a month for him to learn all this stuff. 2) We want to outsource the html development but no company would get our taglib library to learn, OR it become more expensive. We love taglibs as its been a lovely shortcut for javascipt development as we write it only once. What would be the best practices in this sense, and what would you suggest? We are looking for a future-proof solution (or an argument that agrees with ours).

  • Not getting paid for hours you've worked?

    So I was reading from a previous thread about App vs Game Development Here Which brought me to this site: Clicky Alot of it talked about devs working something like 85 hours a week.....and not getting paid overtime, or anything. Just getting paid for the 40 hours.....Is this normal for most software companies? I mean where I work im only an entry level guy....but I get overtime, and Anything over 40 hours is considered this. But it got me thinking "Holy crap" I could never do that. My FREE time is important to me. But is this commonplace in most software companies? or...more a rarity to certain types (game development, etc) Cause it got me scared! Like I understand having to put some extra hours in for a project......but like 80! thats ridiculous.

  • how can we have a person to allot and track tasks in agile development

    I understand that Agile team should be self organized and self driven, but is there a provision that I can have someone who will allot tasks to developers and ensure that all user stories will be completed on time?? For example if there are two persons in an agile team who are not self motivated to take up tasks and they will work only when task is assigned to them with a deadline, how can we deal this in Agile? The problem I face is that no one is fixing the deadlines for the tasks and the team is under delivering for the last two sprints. It will be better if we can have someone who can fix deadlines. I signed up for AWS and while signing up for the free tier of S3, i found this As part of AWS Free Usage Tier, you can get started with Amazon S3 for free. Upon sign-up, new AWS customers receive 5 GB of Amazon S3 storage, 20,000 Get Requests, 2,000 Put Requests, 15GB of bandwidth in and 15GB of bandwidth out each month for one year. source:aws.amazon.com , emphasis mine. 20,000 GET requests & 2000 puts mean , 20,000 page views(max) and 2000 file uploads per month. Isn't that lower than what App Engine offers 43,200,000 requests per day.Am I missing some thing, please help.

    I've made a banner for my website and I'm planning to ask my followers to share it on their website to help improve my rank. my website is hosted on GAE, the banners are less than 5kb/each and I must say that I don't want to pay for extra bandwidth I've read the Google App Engine Quotas but honestly I don't understand anything of it. Would you please tell me which table/data in this page should be of my concern? Also, do you think it's wise to host such banners, that are going to end up on 3rd party websites, on the GAE? or am I more secure if I use free online services like Google Picasa?

  • Cross platform development query

    I'm a Microsoft developer mainly, but there are a couple of small-ish projects I'd like to fiddle with which would benefit from being cross platform. The platforms I want to target are: Windows, Linux, Mac, Android and preferably iPhone, web (running in a browser). I need 3D (Around the level of support seen in something like Minecraft (I'm not writing Minecraft)), some networking. I'm pretty certain Java would work on all except iPhone. Looking at the "related questions" above it's offered up QT (no browser or phone afaik) and also HTML/CSS/Javascript (3D? package for desktop?) The other alternative is to have seperate versions for seperate platforms, developed with some common code where possible. That option isn't something I know anything about. Does anyone have experience of this sort of conundrum? I figured here was better than SO, because I imagine there are compromises which extend beyond technical choice. Finally, this is not a commercial operation, so some of the very expensive cross platform tools are out of the question unless they offer some sort of community edition. Thanks for your time.

    To give light to the situation: I am currently one of two programmers working in a small startup software company. Part of my job requires me to learn a Web development framework that I am not currently familiar with. I get paid by the hour. So the question is: Is it wholly ethical to spend multiple hours of the day reading through documentation and tutorials and be paid for this time where I am not actively developing for our product? Or should the bulk of this learning be done at home, or otherwise off hours, to allow for more full-on development of our application during the work day?

  • Reasons for either 32-bit or 64-bit as development machine

    I'm about to make a new Linux install, which will be primarily used for programming. I've seen benchmarks showing speed improvement of 64-bit version, however, I have hard time of telling how much these benchmarks translate to improvement in every day usage. And of course there are other aspects to consider. Usage I have in mind: mainly programming Python, with occasional C, C++ and Java; IDEs, which are using Java platforms (Eclipse and IntelliJ); on very rare occasions having to compile for 32-bit platform; not planning to have more than 64GB of RAM anytime soon (and I don't mind using PAE kernels); machine in question has 4GB RAM and Athlon II X2; What are pros and cons of choosing either i386 or x86_64 distro?
