  • Webserver optimization

    Hi guys! I have a website hosted on a VPS (512Mb - minimum guranteed memory, 510Mhz proccessor, Debian 5.0 Lenny, Apache 2.2.9 with nginx 0.7.65 as a frontend to serve static content, MySQL 5.1.44, PHP 5.3.2 with APC caching). I'm a web developer, so I'm not very good at optimizing servers, but I've managed to install and setup all those neccessary components (LAMP, nginx, etc.). After that I decided to stress test my website (which uses Drupal 6.16 with caching and all possible optimization enabled) using a utility called "Webserver Stress Tool 7". And it seems to me that the results aren't any good - here is a graph (sorry, as a new user I'm not allowed to post images) As you can see the response time depending on amount of simultaneous users increases very quickly. With 10 simultaneous users the time is about 1000ms, with 100 simultaneous users it's about 15000ms (15s!). The question is do you think this is normal behavior for such a server or something is wrong with the settings and optimization? If you think something is wrong what particulary could be wrong? Any other suggestion how to speed this a little bit up?

  • APC uptime 0 because of Fast

    I have a VPS using Parallels/Plesk (11.0.9 Update #22, last updated at Oct 31, 2012 03:33 AM CentOS 6.3 (Final) x86_64) I have apache (CGI/FastCGI) installed and nginx as reverse proxy. Everything is working just fine. I installed APC for caching, but the issue is that the uptime is 0 always. It's restarting each 15 seconds or so. I checked everywhere and can't find a solution to fix it. The server have the grace restart enabled, but every 6 hours, which shouldn't influence the APC uptime. Searching in Google I found that this could be related to Apache, running with FCGId instead of FastCGI. Plesk/Apache is using this config file: usr/local/psa/admin/conf/templates/default/service/php_over_fastcgi.php which content is: <IfModule mod_fcgid.c> <Files ~ (\.php)> SetHandler fcgid-script FCGIWrapper <?php echo $VAR->server->webserver->apache->phpCgiBin ?> .p$ Options +ExecCGI allow from all </Files> Is here the issue or elsewhere ? How can I fix this to work with FastCGI and make APC working properly. I forgot to specify that even if the uptime is below one minute, APC is doing pretty good job caching (92% are hits).

  • RDP Connection to Windows 7 stays really slow

    I have an Issue with connecting to Windows 7 via RDP. I can open an RDP Session, but regardless of any settings, the responce times are really long. This in particulary is the case when opening a web page in a browser. I've tried IE, Firefox and Google Chrome. I also use RDP connection to a Windows 2008 Server from the same client machine, and the speed is very normal with all features turned on. We have Gigabit Ethernet here. So I think it can not be the client's fault. What concerns Windows 7 Machine, I've tried shutting all the sraphic features off and turning the color levels to 256 colors. Result - the same. If I work locally on the machine - I can not see any lags. What else have I tried: Using old RDP 5 Client from Microsoft Setting network autotuninglevel as seen here Do You have some ideas? Thanks in advance! Update the problem seems to be with rendering window contents. All the window borders and pannes are rendered pretty quickly, but the content shows up very slowly. Also mouse movements are recognised by the Win 7 box only after some period. Are there some hidden settings in the RDP, where one could turn some advanced features off or turn some caching on? I use Bitmap Caching, but this apparently doesn't help.

  • Windows, why 8 GB of RAM feel like a few MB?

    I'm on Windows 7 x64 with 4-core Intel i7 and 8 GB of RAM, but lately it feels like my computer's "RAM" is located solely on the hard drive. Here is what the task manager shows: The total amount of memory used by the processes in the list is just about 1 GB. And what is happening on my computer for a few days now is that one program (Cataloger.exe) is continually processing large quantities of (rather big) files, repeatedly opening and reading them for the purposes of cataloging. But it doesn't grow too much in memory and stays about that size, about 90 MB. However, the amount of data it processes in, say, 30 minutes can be measured in gigabytes. So my guess was that Windows file caching has something to do with it. And after some research on the topic, I came across this program, called RamMap, that displays detailed info on a computer's RAM. Here is the screenshot: So to me it looks like Windows keeps in RAM huge amounts of data that is no longer needed, redirecting any RAM allocation requests to the pagefile on the hard drive. Even when I close Cataloger.exe, the RamMap reports the size of the mapped file as about the same for a long time on. And it's not just this particular program. Earlier I noticed that similar slowdown occurred after some massive file operations with other programs. So it's really not an exception. Whatever it is, it slows down the computer by like 50 times. Opening a new tab in Chrome takes 20-30 seconds, opening a new program can take up to a minute. Due to the slowdown, some programs even crash. So what do you think, is the problem hiding in file caching or somewhere else? How do I solve it?

  • ExpressCache not working after Windows 8 reinstall on Samsung Series 7 Gamer

    I have a Samsung Series 7 Gamer laptop which came with Windows 8. After doing a reinstall of Windows, the ExpressCache software is no longer caching. Running "eccmd -info" shows me that the software is present and it has the MSATA drive partition configured. However, it's not actually caching anything. Anyone know where to look next? The only guides I can find deal with ExpressCache not being present or not having a configured drive.

    Yes, I have read many close questions, but I needed a specific answer and hence this question. First, these are my new server specifications: Linux Server (CentOS), Intel Xeon 3470 Quad Core (2.93GHz x 4) processor, 4 GB DDR3 Memory, 1TB Hard Disk Space, 10 TB Bandwidth and 9 Dedicated IPs. AIM: To speed up my wordpress blog + Increase server's capacity to handle heavy load PLAN: This is how I am planning to setup my server - - VARNISH (in the front, to cache server responses) NGINX (to effectively handle static content & overcome the C10k problem) APACHE (behind Nginx, to effectively deliver dynamic content) APC (PHP page, database & object caching) CPANEL (which requires Apache, and I require it) WORDPRESS W3 TOTAL CACHE (caching plugin for Wordpress). So , will the setup work? Have anyone tried it? Please shower your thoughts and knowledge. NOTE: I can't do without Apache because I am used to that .htaccess & Cpanel stuff. So, it's not any option. All others are options. Please try to help. I hope I am clear in what I wanted to ask.

  • Can I use iptables on my Varnish server to forward HTTPS traffic to a specific server?

    We use Varnish as our front-end web cache and load balancer, so we have a Linux server in our development environment, running Varnish with some basic caching and load-balancing rules across a pair of Windows 2008 IIS web servers. We have a wildcard DNS rule that points *.development at this Varnish box, so we can browse http://www.mysite.com.development, http://www.othersite.com.development, etc. The problem is that since Varnish can't handle HTTPS traffic, we can't access https://www.mysite.com.development/ For dev/testing, we don't need any acceleration or load-balancing - all I need is to tell this box to act as a dumb proxy and forward any incoming requests on port 443 to a specific IIS server. I suspect iptables may offer a solution but it's been a long while since I wrote an iptables rule. Some initial hacking has got me as far as iptables -F iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -m tcp --sport 443 -j ACCEPT iptables -A OUTPUT -p tcp -m tcp --dport 443 -j ACCEPT iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp --dport 443 -j DNAT --to 10.0.0.241:443 iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -p tcp -d 10.0.0.241 --dport 443 -j MASQUERADE iptables -A INPUT -j LOG --log-level 4 --log-prefix 'PreRouting ' iptables -A OUTPUT -j LOG --log-level 4 --log-prefix 'PostRouting ' iptables-save > /etc/iptables.rules (where 10.0.0.241 is the IIS box hosting the HTTPS website), but this doesn't appear to be working. To clarify - I realize there's security implications about HTTPS proxying/caching - all I'm looking for is completely transparent IP traffic forwarding. I don't need to decrypt, cache or inspect any of the packets; I just want anything on port 443 to flow through the Linux box to the IIS box behind it as though the Linux box wasn't even there.     I would like to kindly ask if there's someone who can help me configure Varnish for Magento to reach far more hits. My current ratio from varnishstat is: cache_hit=271 cache_miss=926 I'm kindly asking this because I've googled almost every site related to this theme, but 99.9% of configurations don't work because of outdated code. Details of my set-up: I use Varnish on port 80, Apache on port 81, PageCache as Magento varnish module, APC for PHP speed and Memcached for dynamic caching. Load speed is about 1.5s on home-page (Pingdom.com average results) USA ping & 2.5s Europe. Servers are located in Toronto, Canada.   • How can I measure actual memory usage from my running processes?

    I have two servers, server1 and server2. Both of them are identical HP blades, running the exact same OS (RHEL 5.5). Here's the output of free for both of them: ### server1: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 8017848 2746596 5271252 0 212772 1768800 -/+ buffers/cache: 765024 7252824 Swap: 14188536 0 14188536 ### server2: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 8017848 4494836 3523012 0 212724 3136568 -/+ buffers/cache: 1145544 6872304 Swap: 14188536 0 14188536 If I understand correctly, server2 is using significantly more memory for disk I/O caching, which still counts as memory used. But both are running the same OS and if I remember correctly, I configured both with the same parameters when they were installed. I did a diff on /etc/sysctl.conf and they are identical. The problem is, I am collecting memory usage and other metrics over a period of time, (eg: vmstat, iostat, etc.) while a load is generated on the system. The memory used for caching is throwing off my calculations on the results. How can I measure actual memory usage from my running processes, rather than system usage? Is used - (buffers + cached) a valid way to measure this?

  • Can anyone help me make my reverse proxy actually cache?

    Hi folks, I'm trying to configure a Reverse Caching Proxy but so far have had no luck. I would preferrably like to use apache (that will be all it will be used for), but am open to solutions using other software that can also run on Mac OS X 10.6 (I have also tried using Varnish and Squid, but with no more luck). We're running a system with about 80 mac mini clients that will be requesting lots of video from a server. To reduce load, we thought we could use Apache (which comes on the macs by default) to cache this video forever (or at least as long as possible) onto the macs' disks. I have managed to get a reverse proxy set up with apache using ProxyPass etc, but when i tried to add CacheEnable disk / to the configuration, nothing happened (i do have mod_disk_cache included). Can anyone help with my issue? The apache config file is here Thanks in advance Edit: So far I have been testing it with smaller text files, and it hasn't been caching properly. This suggests it is nothing to do with us actually downloading video, but actually to do with the cache configuration.

    I have just set up a new server with nginx (which I am new to) and PHP. On my site there are essentially 3 different types of files: static content like CSS, JS, and some images (most images are on an external CDN) main PHP/MySQL database-driven website which essentially acts like a static site dynamic PHP/MySQL forum It is my understanding from this question and this page that the static files need no special treatment and will be served as fast as possible. I followed the answer from the above question to set up caching for PHP files and now I have a config like this: location ~ \.php$ { try_files $uri =404; fastcgi_cache one; fastcgi_cache_key $scheme$host$request_uri; fastcgi_cache_valid 200 302 304 30m; fastcgi_cache_valid 301 1h; include /etc/nginx/fastcgi_params; fastcgi_pass unix:/var/run/php-fastcgi/php-fastcgi.socket; fastcgi_index index.php; fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME /srv/www/example$fastcgi_script_name; fastcgi_param HTTPS off; } However, now I want to prevent caching on the forum (either for everyone or only for logged-in users - haven't checked if the latter is feasible with the forum software). I've heard that "if is evil" inside location blocks, so I am unsure how to proceed. With the if inside the location block I would probably add this in the middle: if ($request_uri ~* "^/forum/") { fastcgi_cache_bypass 1; } # or possible this, if I'm able to cache pages for anonymous visitors if ($request_uri ~* "^/forum/" && $http_cookie ~* "loggedincookie") { fastcgi_cache_bypass 1; } Will that work fine, or is there a better way to achieve this?

    Hi all, I'm trying to use url_for(:back) to create a redirect leading back to a previous page upon a user's logging in. I've had it working successfully for when the user just goes to the login page on his or her own. However, when the user is redirected to the login page due to accessing a page requiring that the user be authenticated, the redirect sends the user back to the page before the one s/he had tried to access with insufficient permissions. I'm trying to modify my login controller action to deal with the redirect properly. My plan is to have a query string parameter "redirect" that is used when a forced redirect occurs. In the controller, if that parameter exists that URL is used; otherwise, url_for(:back) is used, or if that doesn't work (due to lack of HTTP_REFERER), then the user is redirected to the site's home page.     I converted a local sound file to a resource, which built this in my XAML: <UserControl.Resources> <my:Uri x:Key="SoundFiles">file:///c:/Audio/HebrewDemo/Shalom.wav</my:Uri> </UserControl.Resources> I did this by pasting a local disk mp3 filename into source, then clicked on the "dot" by source and chose "Extract Value to Resource". When I run, it tells me that "Uri" is not valid, and sure enough, in the Intellisense, I see other elements that start with "uri" but not just URI by itself. In the real world I want to specify a dynamic mp3 file name. For example, I might have a database of foreign language words used for flashcards, I want to play a sound file on a URL. But I thought I would try to walk before running...

    Hi, can any one tell me how to force maven to precede mapping .hbm.xml files in the automatically generated hibernate.cfg.xml file with package path? My general idea is, I'd like to use hibernate-tools via maven to generate the persistence layer for my application. So, I need the hibernate.cfg.xml, then all my_table_names.hbm.xml and at the end the POJO's generated. Yet, the hbm2java goal won't work as I put *.hbm.xml files into the src/main/resources/package/path/ folder but hbm2cfgxml specifies the mapping files only by table name, i.e.: <mapping resource="MyTableName.hbm.xml" /> So the big question is: how can I configure hbm2cfgxml so that hibernate.cfg.xml looks like below: <mapping resource="package/path/MyTableName.hbm.xml" /> My pom.xml looks like this at the moment: <plugin> <groupId>org.codehaus.mojo</groupId> <artifactId>hibernate3-maven-plugin</artifactId> <version>2.2</version> <executions> <execution> <id>hbm2cfgxml</id> <phase>generate-sources</phase> <goals> <goal>hbm2cfgxml</goal> </goals> <inherited>false</inherited> <configuration> <components> <component> <name>hbm2cfgxml</name> <implemetation>jdbcconfiguration</implementation> <outputDirectory>src/main/resources/</outputDirectory> </component> </components> <componentProperties> <packagename>package.path</packageName> <configurationFile>src/main/resources/hibernate.cfg.xml</configurationFile> </componentProperties> </configuration> </execution> </executions> </plugin> And then the second question: is there a way to tell maven to copy resources to the target folder before executing hbm2java? The path to mappings works fine now, I don't know what was wrong before, though. Maybe there is some issue with writing to hibernate.cfg.xml while reading database config from it (though the file gets updated). I've deleted the file hibernate.cfg.xml, replaced it with database.properties and run the goals hbm2cfgxml and hbm2hbmxml. I also don't use the outputDirectory nor configurationfile in those goals anymore. As a result the files hibernate.cfg.xml and all *.hbm.xml are being generated into my target/hibernate3/generated-mappings/ folder, which is the default value. As I generally agree with this point of view, I'd like to continue with that eventually executing hbm2dao and packaging the project to be used as a generated persistence layer component from the business layer.     I am using form-login for security and I am trying to implement an authentication success handler, but I am not sure how to go back to the resource that was initially requested before the login process. By default I think it implements a SimpleUrlAuthenticationSuccessHandler and I tried to mirror that class implementation. But it sets a setDefaultTargetUrl(defaultTargetUrl) and perhaps thats where the magic happens that it remembers the resource to go back to after the login process. Any help is greatly appreciated.   • How to set properties of a d:DesignInstance in XAML?

    I'm using the new d:DesignInstance feature of the 4.0 series WPF tools. Works great! Only issue I'm having is: how can I set properties on the instance? Given something like this: <Grid d:DataContext="{d:DesignInstance plugin:SamplePendingChangesViewModel, IsDesignTimeCreatable=True}"/> How can I set properties on the viewmodel, aside from setting them in its default ctor or routing it through some other object initializer? I gave this a try but VS gives errors on compile "d:DataContext was not found": <Grid> <d:DataContext> <d:DesignInstance IsDesignTimeCreatable="True"> <plugin:SamplePendingChangesViewModel ActiveTagIndex="2"/> </d:DesignInstance> </d:DataContext> For the moment I'm going back to using a resource and 'd:DataContext={StaticResource SampleData}', where I can set the properties in the resource.   • In Email, Image (img) Source (src) Tags are rewritten as relative links. How to fix?

    I'm working on sending out an html based email, and every time it sends the image src tags and some of the anchor href tags are modified to be relative url's. Update 2: This is happening between when the body of the email is generated and sent and when it arrives in my inbox. Update: I am using Postfix on a LAMPP server. In addition, I am using Zend_Mail to send the emails out.   • Is That REST API Really RPC? Roy Fielding Seems to Think So.

    A large amount of what I thought I knew about REST is apparently wrong - and I'm not alone. This question has a long lead-in, but it seems to be necessary because the information is a bit scattered. The actual question comes at the end if you're already familiar with this topic. From the first paragraph of Roy Fielding's REST APIs must be hypertext-driven, it's pretty clear he believes his work is being widely misinterpreted: I am getting frustrated by the number of people calling any HTTP-based interface a REST API. Today’s example is the SocialSite REST API. That is RPC. It screams RPC. There is so much coupling on display that it should be given an X rating. Fielding goes on to list several attributes of a REST API. Some of them seem to go against both common practice and common advice on SO and other forums. For example: A REST API should be entered with no prior knowledge beyond the initial URI (bookmark) and set of standardized media types that are appropriate for the intended audience (i.e., expected to be understood by any client that might use the API). ... A REST API must not define fixed resource names or hierarchies (an obvious coupling of client and server). ... A REST API should spend almost all of its descriptive effort in defining the media type(s) used for representing resources and driving application state, or in defining extended relation names and/or hypertext-enabled mark-up for existing standard media types. ... The idea of "hypertext" plays a central role - much more so than URI structure or what HTTP verbs mean. "Hypertext" is defined in one of the comments: When I [Fielding] say hypertext, I mean the simultaneous presentation of information and controls such that the information becomes the affordance through which the user (or automaton) obtains choices and selects actions. Hypermedia is just an expansion on what text means to include temporal anchors within a media stream; most researchers have dropped the distinction. Hypertext does not need to be HTML on a browser. Machines can follow links when they understand the data format and relationship types. I'm guessing at this point, but the first two points above seem to suggest that API documentation for a Foo resource that looks like the following leads to tight coupling between client and server and has no place in a RESTful system. GET /foos/{id} # read a Foo POST /foos/{id} # create a Foo PUT /foos/{id} # update a Foo Instead, an agent should be forced to discover the URIs for all Foos by, for example, issuing a GET request against /foos. (Those URIs may turn out to follow the pattern above, but that's beside the point.) The response uses a media type that is capable of conveying how to access each item and what can be done with it, giving rise to the third point above. For this reason, API documentation should focus on explaining how to interpret the hypertext contained in the response. Furthermore, every time a URI to a Foo resource is requested, the response contains all of the information needed for an agent to discover how to proceed by, for example, accessing associated and parent resources through their URIs, or by taking action after the creation/deletion of a resource. The key to the entire system is that the response consists of hypertext contained in a media type that itself conveys to the agent options for proceeding. It's not unlike the way a browser works for humans. But this is just my best guess at this particular moment. Fielding posted a follow-up in which he responded to criticism that his discussion was too abstract, lacking in examples, and jargon-rich: Others will try to decipher what I have written in ways that are more direct or applicable to some practical concern of today. I probably won’t, because I am too busy grappling with the next topic, preparing for a conference, writing another standard, traveling to some distant place, or just doing the little things that let me feel I have I earned my paycheck. So, two simple questions for the REST experts out there with a practical mindset: how do you interpret what Fielding is saying and how do you put it into practice when documenting/implementing REST APIs? Edit: this question is an example of how hard it can be to learn something if you don't have a name for what you're talking about. The name in this case is "Hypermedia as the Engine of Application State" (HATEOAS).

  • Pass or Get a value from Parent ViewModel down to Sub-ViewModel?

    I am using the MVVM Light framework as well as Unity for DI. I have some nested Views, each bound to a corresponding ViewModel. The ViewModels are bound to each View's root control DataContext via the ViewModelLocator idea that Laurent Bugnion has put into MVVM Light. This allows for finding ViewModels via a static resource and for controlling the lifetime of ViewModels via a Dependency Injection framework, in this case Unity. It also allows for Expression Blend to see everything in regard to ViewModels and how to bind them. As I stated the Views have a healthy dose of nesting, but the ViewModels don't really know anything about each other. A parent view binds to its corresponding ViewModel via the static resource ViewModelLocator (which uses Unity to control the construction and lifetime of the ViewModel object). That parent view contains a user control in it that is another sub-view, which then goes and gets its corresponding ViewModel via the ViewModelLocator as well. The ViewModels don't have references to each other or know any hierarchy in regard to each other. So here's an example of how the ViewModels do interact via messaging. I've got a parent View that has a ComboBox databound to an ObservableCollection in its ViewModel. The ComboBox's SelectedItem is also bound (two-way) to a property on the ViewModel. When the selection of the ComboBox changes, this is to trigger updates in other Views and sub-Views. Currently I am accomplishing this via the Messaging system that is found in MVVM Light. So I'm wondering what the best practice would be to get information from one ViewModel to another? In this case, what I need to pass down to sub-ViewModels is basically a user Guid representing the currently logged in user. The top-most parent View (well, ViewModel) will know this information, but I'm not sure how to get it down into the sub-ViewModels. Some possible approaches I can think of: Should the sub-ViewModel ask the static resource ViewModelLocator for a reference to the same object the parent View is using and access the property that way? It seems like ViewModels going through each other's properties is not very clean and couples them together unnecessarily. I'm already using messaging to notify the sub-Views that the user selected a new item in the ComboBox and to update accordingly. But the object type that is being selected in the ComboBox is not really directly related to this data value that the sub-Views need.

    I'm building a very simple REST API using Jersey, and I've got a warning in my log files that I'm not sure about. WARNING: A servlet POST request, to the URI http://myserver/mycontext/myapi/users/12345?action=delete, contains form parameters in the request body but the request body has been consumed by the servlet or a servlet filter accessing the request parameters. Only resource methods using @FormParam will work as expected. Resource methods consuming the request body by other means will not work as expected. My webapp only has the Jersey servlet defined, mapped to /myapi/* How can I stop these warnings?
