  Is there an easy way in windows to set a given string, like "sidb" to run a program or open a given folder in Windows? My original idea was to be able to run commands like that in the "Execute" start button menu (or Win + R),so I'd just have to do WIN+R and type "sidb". What is the best way to accomplish this? EDIT: May I rephrase this as : Is there a way to define for example, in systems variables, sibd="C:.......blabla\ and then I'd just have to type "sibd" in Run?

• Running Modern UI/Metro Apps as Administrator in Windows 8

  I noticed that on Windows 8's Start screen, I could right click a Windows legacy program (A program which runs on Windows XP, Vista and 7), and I could run it as Administrator. However, whenever I clicked on a Windows 8 Modern UI or a Metro app, I didn't have that option. So here are my questions:- Why can't I run the Modern UI apps as an Administrator? Does it make any difference as far as security is concerned?

• Graphite not running

  I'm currently trying to install graphite 0.9.9 on a gentoo box using these instructions from the graphite wiki. Essentially, it fronts graphite using apache and mod_wsgi. Everything seems to have gone well, except that apache / the graphite webapp never seem to return a response to the web browser (the browser continuously waits to load the page). I've turned on the graphite debug info, but the only message in the log files is this, repeated over and over again in info.log (with the pid always changing): Thu Feb 23 01:59:38 2012 :: graphite.wsgi - pid 4810 - reloading search index These instructions have worked for me before to set up graphite on an Ubuntu machine. • Running Android emulator inside a Virtualbox Vm

  I'm trying to setup a VM with a complete android development stack (SDK, Platforms, Eclipse etc) for a Hackathon. I'm having real trouble getting the emulator to start in the VM. I realize that the emulator is essentially a VM itself inside the Vbox VM and so is going to be slow, but it just hangs at the Android splash screen and never gets any further. Might there be something going on with the VM that is causing it to run so very slowly? Is there anything I can do to give the VM more CPU? I've tried setting the execution cap to 100% but it didn't help any. Anyone know what might be going on here, or have any ideas about how I might speed it up? Thanks Steve.

• I don't see the running guest in virsh

  Using CentOS 5 with KVM. I have downloaded this KVM applicance, and when unzipped it is just a .img file. No xml file supplied. I can start the guest with /usr/libexec/qemu-kvm -hda /data/kvm/slash.img -m 512 and it works. Now I would like to make a config file for the guest. The problem is when I do # virsh -c qemu:///system list Id Name State ---------------------------------- # I don't see the guest as expected. Does anyone know what is wrong?

• Suppress "running out of disk space" Message (per drive) on Windows Server 2003

  We have a database server with separate drives for OS, various data files and the transaction log. Our transaction log spills over onto other volumes as well- this is expected behavior. The problem is that we are constantly getting popups that our transaction log drive is out of space (and that I can free space by deleting old or unnecessary files). Is there some way to prevent this message from popping up for this particular drive?

  I fell into a snare when i downloaded and install virtual box 4.0 on my ubuntu 10.4, when i started the virtualbox i tried i saw that my network icon on my desktop showed my red x showing iam disconnected and this happened shortily when i installed virtual box 4.0 I have searched through the web and found some people who have faced some problem. but the solution they gave them i tried but it coudn't work, of restarting,starting ,stoping the netowrk manager, i was even thinking of uninstalling this virutalbox but not netowrk connection truely i need your help

• Internet Explorer 8 only running as process not application

  Internet Explorer 8 on XP SP3 starts without browser window. Task manager doesn't show application, but iexplore.exe is listed twice in process window. Process Explorer reports "no visible windows found for this process" when I try to "bring to front" in the iexplore.exe properties dialog. Have reinstalled (twice), full scanned with MBAM/MSSE/SpyBot etc, re-registered ieproxy.dll (another Google-inspired tip!), run without addons (-extoff switch), and still same problem. Recently uninstalled VMWare Player and wondered whether problem related to VM network adapter somehow, but Firefox still works perfectly. This is one of my home machines, not critical, and it is backed up, so I will restore if I have to. But any and all suggestions will be gratefully received. It would be nice to understand what might have happened, and perhaps others may benefit from any knowledge that comes to light.

  I have a Ruby script that connects to a remote machine via ssh and executes a command. The script runs fine when I just run it in my terminal. In my crontab, I have 1 * * * * /bin/bash -l -c 'ruby myfile.rb' and if I go ahead and run /bin/bash -l -c 'ruby myfile.rb', everything executes fine. But when cron itself executes the job, I get a ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host error. What's the cause of this? How do I fix it?

• wamp - Changing PHP version stops server running

  I downloaded wamp which works (green icon). However I need to test a site locally in Joomla 1.5 which caused errors when using php 5.3 I believe I need a PHP version lower then this i.e 5.2.x To do this I have gone through PHP - Version - Get More.. and installed a older PHP version. However when I start this PHP version the icon stays on an orange colour and going in localhost doesn't work. I haven't used wamp before so my knowledge of it is limited. If anyone could point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated, Regards.

• Cronjob not Running

However, now I am trying to automate the process by using cron. So I made a cron job that I want to run every 6 hours that looks like this 0 */6 * * * /home/ec2-user/restart.sh When I run "crontab -l" I can see this print so I know it's been added properly. I should mention that the service does not have the ability to be restarted, (like "service ... restart") the process ID needs to be found, killed and then the start script needs to be ran. I have found that this cronjob is not working, I'll log onto the box and I can tell by looking at the logs that no restart has occurred. What am I doing wrong? What can I do to troubleshoot? Any advice would help, this is my first cron job :) Thanks!

• Running telnet standalone - possible?

  So, this is what I want to do: there is a local non-superuser and it can upload the file into /tmp. Using this account, I download a telnet server package equivalent to what is already installed. I modify some settings, setting all file directories into /tmp. Then compile and run as a standalone telnet server. Is this possible? If not, what makes this impossible? Or as a non-privileged user, would there be any way to enable telnet?

  I have a five year old Sony Vaio laptop (vgn-fw31m) that has had impact damage to the audio-output mini-jack for about the last year or so. In a recent discussion with my brother, we wondered whether it would be possible to write a program that would enable windows to use the microphone mini-jack input as the audio-output? As I currently use this laptop for work I am not keen to risk pulling it apart in order to replace the components comprising the audio-out. I therefore 'hope' that a programming solution exists.   I've been having some hard times with Virtualbox. I use it to run 64-bit Debian guest on a Windows 7 host to be able to code for linux systems. It generally crashes when I build my code in eclipse cdt, or if I am doing some intensive operations. Should I lower the memory and core usage? Is this some sort of virtualbox problem? I upgraded to virtualbox v4.1.8 and the problem still occurs. My virtual machine instance uses 1736MB out of 4GB of ram, and I use 2 out of 8 processor cores. But still, the whole thing crashes 1 or 2 times every single day.

  I am looking to buy numbers in bulk on DIDx.net. After I purchase the numbers in a particular area code, I want to forward those numbers to other numbers that are outside of that area code. This way it will be seen as a local call versus long distance. I have the customers but I don't have the system I need. I have read about Asterisk, VOIP, SIP, and BYOH. The problem started after installing Windows updates the website suddenly stopped and giving me an error "Cannot connect to the configuration database" If I tried to open SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard it is gives me a strange error says: "An exception of type Microsoft.SharePoint.PostSetupConfiguration.PostSetupConfigurationTaskException was thrown. Additional exception information: SharePoint Products and Technologies cannot be configured. Access is denied ." and I don't know how to solve this problem. I'm really want to make my web site working because our team really need these documents and its stuff. • Time difference between servers after disaster recovery

  We are running an old training system based on Windows Server 2003 and XP-clients. The solution is rather simple with four servers, two of them beeing DC:s. Everything is preconfigured and that goes for backup scheme as well. The backup software is Symantec BackupExec 2010. The scheme is a standard GF-F-S routine with full backups running once a week on Sundays. The other six days run differential backups. Now let's say in a worst case scenario, a server crashes on Saturday and we have to restore it from backup. The last backup will then be six days old and thus it will come online with six days old configurations. Will this pose a problem for the other servers or will the recovered server "get in line" eventually?
