• Java 1.7ea: Files.probeContentType(path) returns null

  Hi, I'm having a bit of a strange problem with an application using the Files.probeContentType(path)-method to test for file type: On both my Ubuntu and Fedora systems, it works fine, but when moved to a RedHat Enterprise server (2.6.18-194.el5 #1 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux), it only returns null. I'm using java 7 early access (1.7.0-ea-b84). I have to use this version due to functionality that isn't included in 1.6. Does anyone have an idea of what might be the problem here?

• x-code cannot see my class

  This is pretty strange. I have a class in Classes folder of my project (a .h file and a .m file). When I try to import it like so #import <myClass.h> I get an error saying "no such file or directory". It is definitely there. What could be going on?

• Continual "The Windows Filtering Platform has blocked a connection" errors?

  Our systems have been compromised by something recently which has lead us to carry out a more detailed look at what is happening on our workstations. I have noticed an issue where the Security log of this Windows 7 workstation is continually logging a security "Audit Failure" where the detail is that "The Windows Filtering Platform has blocked a connection". This is happening thousands of times a day and would appear to be our BT Business Broadband HGV 2700 ADSL router attempting to connect to Port 137 (NET Bios) on my workstation and being blocked. This has unfortunately had the effect of filling up the log files so much that anything which might have been of use which was logged over the weekend to help debug the intrusion has been "overwritten off the end" of the Security log. (I've since increased the log file size limits massively and turned on archiving). Does anyone know if this is standard behaviour of a BT ADSL router or whether this indicates that the router is compromised in some way or malfunctioning, or have any further suggestions as to how to diagnose this problem?

• Must partprobe before using drive?

  This is a followup question to Cannot mount /dev/sdc1 on Debian 5.0, special device /dev/sdc1 doesn't exist Basically, I have 6 SATA hard drives in a machine and I'm trying to create a RAID6 array with them. When I try to run the mdadm command to create (with the verbose option) a raid array, I see messages like "mdadm: super1.x cannot open /dev/sdf1: No such device or address" which are resolved by doing partprobe /dev/sdf and then re-running the mdadm command. The problem is that I have to run partprobe after each reboot, and from experience I don't think this is normal behaviour -- on no other linux machine do I have to partprobe the device before I can use it. Something must be going wrong, but how do I troubleshoot this to find out what? Could this be caused by a hardware problem? Edit: Additional note - before I seemed to only have this problem with one drive, but now I'm having it with 3 drives.

  Hi, I'm trying to virtualize an application for Windows 7 but am running into trouble: Application will run fine in Windows 7 if installed in the base. When it is virtualized, it will run on XP, but not on Windows 7. I have tried this in three ways: Captured on XP with ThinApp 4.0 Captured on XP with ThinApp 4.5 Captured on Windows 7 with ThinApp 4.5 Even when captured on Windows 7, it will not run on Windows 7 but will run on XP. When captured with a rival product, Altiris SVS, the virtualized app runs fine on Windows 7. Any idea's what could cause this behaviour? Looking at the trace file, you see that they are different right from the start when comparing Windows 7 and XP tracefiles. What could cause it to go in completely different directions? (And why does the tracefile on Windows 7 say: Operating System Unknown? Does everybody have that on Windows 7 even with 4.5?) The error message is: "Object variable or with block variable not set". • "You need to confirm this operation" message when trying to delete a file

  I'm trying to delete a few files that I created, and I have full permissions on, on a Windows 2008 system. The files are within a folder that I created so they are not system files of any kind. The message box that pops up when I try to delete the file is titled "Destination Folder Access Denied", and the message is "you need to confirm this operation", with a continue, skip or cancel button. I disabled UAC and rebooted to see if this would make the message go away -- it did not. However, with UAC disabled I am able to click on continue and the files are deleted. With UAC enabled I had to provide elevated credientials before the files would delete. What causes this behaviour and how can I remove it?

• Is there a taskbar for OS X?

  I'd like to permanently see a clickable list of windows I have open, in the same way that the taskbar allows in Windows. Can I do this on Mac? Some details: i have many virtual desktops (spaces), so often a single application has windows on many of them. I often have multiple windows of each application, such as the terminal or browser, on the same virtual desktop I have multiple monitors, if it matters. Edit: When I say 'permanently see a clickable list of windows I have open' I mean that I want to see every window I have open, and I'd like to be able to click on each one to open that window. I'm not looking for the newer behaviour where tasks are clustered by application.

• Are there netcat-like tools for Windows which are not quarantined as malware?

  I used to use netcat for Windows to help track down network connectivity issues. However these days my anti-virus software (Symantec - but I understand others display similar behaviour) quarantines netcat.exe as malware. Are there any alternative applications which provide at least the following functionality: can connect to an open TCP socket and send data to it which is typed on the console can open and listen on a TCP socket and print received data to the console ? I don't need the 'advanced' features (which are possibly the reason for the quarantining) such as port scanning or remote execution.

• Bind9 as a caching resolver fails with mismatch ID on localhost but not external IP

  I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on a machine on my private network. I have bind9 installed (v9.8.1-P1) via aptitude, so it appears to have put all the bits in the right places and the service starts automatically. I plan on adding some zones later, but first I'm just trying to get it working as a caching resolver. I installed bind, configured it, and starting using it. Initially I thought it was working ok, but then I found some sites weren't being resolved. I've pinned it down to being linked to the size of the result and bind failing-over to TCP mode. So: I'm trying to find out why bind is failing when I query for domain info and the result is 512 bytes (causing a truncation and retry on TCP). Specifically it fails with ID mismatches if I point dig at localhost, but works when I query the machine's own IP (192.168.0.2). This appears to be backwards to the problem that most people have when using bind (fails on external ip, works on localhost). If I do dig @localhost google.com (which has a response of <512 bytes) then it works; I get no warnings, and plenty of output. $ dig @localhost google.com ; <<>> DiG 9.8.1-P1 <<>> @localhost google.com [snip lots of output] ;; Query time: 39 msec ;; SERVER: 127.0.0.1#53(127.0.0.1) ;; WHEN: Thu Oct 17 23:08:34 2013 ;; MSG SIZE rcvd: 495 If I do dig @localhost play.google.com (which has a larger response) then I get back something like: $ dig @localhost play.google.com ;; Truncated, retrying in TCP mode. ;; ERROR: ID mismatch: expected ID 3696, got 27130 This seems to be standard, documented behaviour - when the UDP response is large (here 'large' == 512 bytes) it falls back to TCP. The ID mismatch is not expected though. If I do dig @192.168.0.2 play.google.com then I still get the warning about using TCP mode, but it otherwise works $ dig @192.168.0.2 play.google.com ;; Truncated, retrying in TCP mode. ; <<>> DiG 9.8.1-P1 <<>> @192.168.0.2 play.google.com [snip most of the output] ;; Query time: 5 msec ;; SERVER: 192.168.0.2#53(192.168.0.2) ;; WHEN: Thu Oct 17 23:05:55 2013 ;; MSG SIZE rcvd: 521 At the moment I've not set up any zones in my local instance, so it's just acting as a caching resolver. My options config is pretty much unchanged from standard, I've got the following set: options { directory "/var/cache/bind"; allow-query { 192.168/16; 127.0.0.1; }; forwarders { 8.8.8.8; 8.8.4.4; }; dnssec-validation auto; edns-udp-size 4096 ; allow-transfer { any; }; auth-nxdomain no; # conform to RFC1035 listen-on-v6 { any; }; }; And my /etc/resolv.conf is just nameserver 127.0.0.1 search .local The problem definitely seems linked to the failover to TCP mode: if I do dig +bufsize=4096 @localhost play.google.com then it works; no warning about failover to TCP, no ID mismatch, and a standard looking result. To be honest, if there was a way to force bind to use a much larger UDP buffer, that'd probably be good enough for me, but all I've been able to find mention of is max-udp-size 4096 and that doesn't change the behaviour in any way. I've also tried setting edns-udp-size 512 in case the problem is some weird EDNS issue with my router (which seems unlikely since the +bufsize=4096 flag works fine). I've also tried dig +trace @localhost play.google.com; this works. No truncation/TCP warning, and a full result. I've also tried changing the servers used in the forwarder (e.g. to OpenDNS), but that makes no difference. There's one last data point: if I repetitively do dig @localhost play.google.com I don't always get an ID mismatch, but sometimes a REFUSED error.   i really need help here. Sitting for some time now and dont figured it out. I want to realize a very simple task - rewrite a non-existent php file to another existant php file with all arguments like: this http://example.com/nonexistent.php?url=google.com to -> http://example.com/existent.php?url=google.com I tried something like this: rewrite ^/nonexistent.php /existent.php; Which dont works (File not found). But redirect a non-existent html file to a php file like this: rewrite ^/nonexistent.html /existent.php; works. I dont want to rewrite a html file, but this is still a confusing behaviour. Therefore it tried also something like this (and some variations): rewrite ^/nonexistent.php?url=^(.*)$ /existent.php?url=$1; which is also not working. (Maybe the syntax is bad) Any help here? It would be very nice!

• Can / should I prevent my domain controller doing forward lookups for remote users?

  I have a Windows Server 2003 server in the office. I VPN into the LAN remotely. My VPN has a virtual NIC with the Windows Server as the primary DNS since it is a domain controller. When connected to the VPN and I do a nslookup or simply browse the web my VPN's DNS (the office's Windows Server) provides the DNS answers - I beleive becuase it has DNS forwarders so queries it cant answer it forwards and then relays the answer. This is the desired behaviour for workstations in the office (they should query their domain controller first). However for remote VPN users this is not desirable - I do not want my remote office's server to answer DNS queries it is not the authority of (which happends to be 192.168.x.x). Is there any way I can configure this?

• Server Configuration / Important Parameter for 500Req/Second

  I am configuring a server to be used as nginx server for a very heavy traffic website. It is expected to receive traffic from a large number of IP addresses simultaneously. It is expected to get 500Req/Second with atleast 20Million unique IPs connecting it. One of the problems I noticed in my previos server was related to iptables / ipconntrack. I am not aware of this behaviour and would be glad to know which all parameters of a ubuntu / debian (32/64) bit machine should I tweek to get maximum performance from the server. I can put in a lot of RAM on the server but mission critical task is the response times. We ideally dont want any connection to be hanging / timing out / waiting and want as low as possible overall response times. P.S. We are also looking for a kick ass freelancer system admin who can help us figuring / setting this all up. Reach me incase you have some spare time and interested in working on some very heavy traffic website servers.

• gVIM "put" driving me mad, how do I "put" at the beginning of a line

  I'm learning gVIM on Windows, and as I slowly learn more of the keystrokes I find myself using the mouse less and less, which is great. I have a couple of questions I've yet to figure out: I do a lot of copy and paste. So I use 'v' to enter VISUAL mode, use k/j to move up/down and select the lines, then hit 'y' to yank. I then go to the line where I want to insert, and hit 'p' to put, BUT the darn thing pastes after the 1st character. I can't move any further left, so I am definitely at the start of the line, so I find the 'p'ut behaviour of pasting 1 char after my cursor position to be supremely annoying. I switch between edit and command mode an awful lot, and my poor little finger on my left hand is getting sore from being stretched out to hit the 'Esc' key (to enter command mode) every few seconds. Is there a more finger-friendly way to enter command mode?

• VB6 network errors Windows 2008 run on ESX VMWare

  We have an application built in vb6, the executables for the application are run locally on a Windows 2008 Terminal Server the dll's for the application are located on a network share. Intermittently parts of the application crash with inpage errors.. we realise the .dll it references then copy that dll locally to the windows 2008 server and register the application can then run again alternatly we reboot the server and all ok. ideally we do not want the exec's or dll's on local server, they should be located on network share for other Terminal Servers to access. error values we receive are C0000203 C00000C4 I have disabled windows 2008 UAC and DEP.. Has anyone experienced this type of behaviour in 2008?

• USB hard drive doesn't graceful power off after eject on Windows 7

  I have a couple of Seagate FreeAgent Go external USB hard drives and would like them to gracefully power off after ejecting in Windows 7. With Windows XP a few seconds after they are ejected they gracefully power off. When ejecting them on Windows 7 they just stay on and have to be physically disconnected before they lose power. I have checked the hard drive removal policy and it is set to quick removal. I have also looked in the Seagate forums but I couldn't find any info on this so I thought I'd ask the SuperUser community on any ideas why the difference and how to get the same behaviour in Windows 7 as in XP? Update: I am finding that this also happens with USB thumb drives as well. My current theory is that there were changes to the driver model with Vista/Win 7 that haven't been reflected in the device drivers yet. So things that worked under XP don't under Win7 as the drivers haven't been updated for the new model. Does that sound right?

• How to get rid of resume information on ubuntu 9.10 ("karmic")

  I am on an old laptop with Ubuntu 9.10 installed. I once tried to not shutdown but go into one of the resume states. On the next power on, resume did not work, but there was an error message during boot asking me for the resume image (which I do not have or know of) and when I press enter the normal boot happens. But this error pops up on every boot now. How can I get back the behaviour from before? Why does the boot process guess there would be a resume image and can I delete this information? I would like to post here the error messages from the boot proces, but they are not in /var/log/syslog, where else can they be?

• SMS reminder for Windows Mobile?

  A lot of mobile phones can be setup to emit a reminder beep every few minutes if you have an unread SMS. So when you miss the receive signal of the sms (because you've been in the restroom) you'll hear a gentle beep every few minutes, so you know you received an sms while you've been busy. Is there a way to get this behaviour on windows mobile (6.5)? I found nothing to activate this in the menu, but maybe it's hidden somewhere. Or do I need an extra software (but where could I find this?)? Thanks, Sam

• Exchange 2010 - No Push notification when when deleting emails from Outlook

  Hi I'm setting up a Exchange 2010 server for our test environment. I'm running Windows 2008R2 enterprise on this machine. Iv'e also installed all updates available for windows and exchange 2010 including rollup 1 and 2 for exchange that include bugfixes regarding push notifications. My problem is when deleting mail or marking mail as read don't trigger a push notification. The happens when I use webgui, mobile phone and Outlook 2007. When deleting a email in Outlook 2007 the changes get sent to the server since the changes are visible in webgui but not on mobile phone. I get push notifications when I get new emails since new emails appear instantly on the mobile phone. Is this normal behaviour on Exchange 2010? For me it seems a bit funny. If i force sync on mobile phone the changes appear. Iv'e tested this on both iphone and HTC HD2(Running Windows Mobile 6.5) with same results.

• Event Viewer shows service name as a truncated 8 character name

  I have written a service which logs to the Windows Event Log when it has any problems. This works fine and the service name is shown correctly in the Source column of the Event Viewer. The problem I am seeing is when my service hits some major problems like the networking layer has died etc. When this happens the event log shows errors about my service but the service name is shown as a truncated 8 character name. This name looks to be that of the executable and not the service name. Is this normal behaviour for a truncated name to be show ?

• Entering Unicode Characters using NumPad in Chrome conflicting with Options Menu

  TL;DR: Can't use E while entering Unicode on NumPad — conflicting with Options menu OK, so I finally got entering Hex Unicode chars on my laptop using the NumPad working using this answer from this link But when I was trying to enter the Irony Mark (? U+2E2E), as soon as I hit the E, Options opened up like in old-style menus where pressing Alt + letter brought up the relevant menu. This annoying behaviour doesn't let me enter any Unicode code-point that has an E. This works fine outside Chrome. How can I stop this?
