• Where can I find luxury goods advertisements for my website?

  I'm running business directory for tourist attractions, and I would like to fill some empty blocks with useful advertisements like flight operators, car retailers, luxury goods etc. We have tried Google AdSense but it's full of cheap, pointless and irrelevant advertisement that would make our website look cheap and bad. So I'm curious is there any centralised resources for luxury goods and services?

• Auto-select external soundcard?

  Just got an external usb sound card because my internal speakers broke. The new sound card works just fine after plugging it in and going to System Settings Sound, and then selecting the device. However, I was curious as to whether there was a way to make ubuntu auto-select the device without having to go through System Settings. Can it just be selected upon plugging it in? Any and all help appreciated :)) (ps its running 12.04)

• What format have project managers used for defining features/requirements? [on hold]

  At the company that I currently work at, Word documents are passed around which contain the features/requirements for the software we write, and those Word docs contain mock-ups (there aren't any use cases that I've seen). I'm just curious what project managers use at other companies. Do some skip making the requirements documents altogether and go straight for a ticket-tracker such as JIRA? • Can Campaign URL tags cause a soft 404 error?

  I was checking out one of my company's website's Webmaster Tools to analyze the cause behind some soft 404 errors and discovered that a few of the older errors had affiliate mp referral tags listed as the relative URLs. Since these are older problems and I don't seem too many of them coming up in the last few months I don't think it's still a problem. I'm just curious if it's possible to cause a soft 404 by improperly copying the campaign or referral tag into the URL.

• How does a programmer who doesn't know how to program get a job ? [closed]

  I often read about this and I'm curious: if there programmers who can't program, how did they get a programming job in the first place? They must bring some value to the company they're working for, otherwise they would be fired. I don't think "programmers who don't know how to program" means "bad programmers" in this case ? Even if they are bad programmers, they still know (badly) how to write (bad) programs. So what defines programmers who can't program ?

• Pronunciation of "char"

  I know there's another question on here already about pronunciation here, but it's got a whole list of programming terms. I'm just interested in finding out how everybody pronounces just one thing - "char". I personally like "care" as in the first syllable of "character", since that's what it represents, but in past experience I've found there are far more people who say "char" as in "char-broiled", and some who say "car". Sorry to start a holy war, but I'm curious.

  Are short identifiers bad? How does identifier length correlate with code comprehension? What other factors (besides code comprehension) might be of consideration when it comes to naming identifiers? Just to try to keep the quality of the answers up, please note that there is some research on the subject already! Edit Curious that everyone either doesn't think length is relevant or tend to prefer larger identifiers, when both links I provided indicate large identifiers are harmful!

• Flash video doesn't work after upgrade to 11.10

  I've found that after upgrading to 11.10 (32 bit), I can no longer watch streaming flash video on sites such as Ustream or Justin.tv. I've spent the last several hours installing this package and uninstalling that package, and purging everything flash-related and starting over, to no avail. I was curious if anybody else has run into similar issues and found a fix. I'm running an NVIDIA card, and I've tried both sets of drivers available.

• How are these bullets done?

  I really want to know how the bullets in Radiangames Inferno are done. The bullets seem like they are just billboard particles but I am curious about how their tails are implemented. They can curve so this means they are not just a billboard. Also, they appear continuous which implies that the tails are not made of a bunch of smaller particles (I think). Can anyone shead some light on this for me?

• Can I use VirtualBox as a sandbox for 12.04?

  I am quite a cautious person though not afraid to experiment. I currently have 11.10 Unity and 12.04 Beta 2 running on different partitions (no problems). I have learned here that Unity can run in VirtuaBox. When I upgrade to 12.04 LTS later this month, I am curious to understand if I could also run 12.04 in Virtual Box for experimentation and test some things before I implement them into my system? Maybe there is a better way to achieve this, without partitioning my hard drive.

• Image CDN with API?

  My company uses flickr and picasa web albums as poor man's content delivery networks (CDN) for image hosting, but I'm curious if anyone has any recommendations on any other services that might be worth looking into, paid and free? Preferably something that has an API so that it can be integrated discreetly on the backend as a WordPress plugin or for other development frameworks. A CDN such as Amazon is cheap, and it works, but the lack of a photo-centric API is what prevents me from using it for general usage.

• How does someone with a business degree become a software consultant?

  I'm a 4th year computer engineering student from a reputable university in Toronto and i'm curious as to how some of these software consulting positions with the large firms (Accenture, Deloitte, IBM, etc.) accept business grads as well as comp-sci and computer engineers? How does a business grad consult on software without having a background in software? Besides communication skills and other soft skills, what separates me from a business grad for these positions?
