• Monitoring outgoing bandwidth of application

  I currently have a VPS that is consuming a ton of outgoing bandwidth and I am trying to drill down to where this may be coming from. Does anyone know of a logical way to go about finding out which pages on the site are consuming the most outgoing data. We have done a ton of front-end optimizations to the site and our google page speed rankings ar 85% so I feel we have done a pretty great job at optimizing the site for speed. • ZFS: Redistribute zvol over all disks in the zpool?

  Is there a way in which ZFS can be prompted to redistribute a given filesystem over the all of the disks in its zpool? I'm thinking of a scenario where I have a fixed size ZFS volume that's exported as a LUN over FC. The current zpool is small, just two 1TB mirrored disks, and the zvol is 750GB in total. If I were to suddenly expand the size of the zpool to, say, 12 1TB disks, I believe the zvol would still effectively be 'housed' on the first two spindles only. Given that more spindles = more IOPS, what method could I use to 'redistribute' the zvol over all 12 spindles to take advantage of them?

• Differences in memory consumption between two identical D7 sites?

  I'm running Drupal on a news site that has a lot of different View blocks on the front page (~5 total, all cached). In trying to reduce the memory footprint of the site, I've checked out source from SVN to a local development install to try and convert some of those blocks into more optimized code. Here's the weird thing. Devel module lists memory consumption at 50mb on the Production site (Running Nginx, PHP 5.2.17, XCache and Zend Optimizer.) but only 14mb on my development site (Running Apache2, PHP 5.2.13 and XCache). These are nearly-identical versions of the same site — frankly, the Production site should use even less memory as I've disabled some of the modules running on the Dev site. Any idea why this might be the case?

• How can I tell whether an interrupted rm -r removed any files?

  I installed sshfs a Linux box and then mounted my Mac home directory. In the middle of troubleshooting a configuration issue, I did an ls -l on the mount directory (as normal user), receiving: total 0 d????????? ? ? ? ? ? sl I then ran sudo rm -r on that directory but pressed Ctrl+C to terminate it immediately before it (looks) like the command did anything. I notice no files missing but I want to be sure - is there a way I can somehow inspect the filesystem log on my Mac to see if any files were actually removed?

• Running SQL*Plus with bash causes wrong encoding

  I have a problem with running SQL*Plus in the bash. This is working fine. My problem is that when I save the file script.sql my encoding goes wrong. All special characters(like íášc) are broken and that's causing inserting wrong characters into my DB. Encoding of that file is UTF-8, also UTF-8 is set on the XSQL page on our intranet. So I really don't know where could be a problem. And also any advices regarding to my script are welcomed, I am total newbie in Linux scripting:-)

I think I have followed the instructions but since its not working, I would love some assistance or guidance as to what I am doing wrong.   In my Apache config I want to set an environment variable if I see that the visitor comes from an specific IP range. I could do an Deny From 194.8.74.0/23 ... but then I don't get a variable that I can check in my 403 error page - to find the reason why access has been denied. Any suggestions what I might miss? Is there an Apache2 MOD that can set environment variables based on "IP Address Ranges"?

I know it no longer boots and even with boot-repair and a Ubuntu live usb I was able to restore it.   While I am aware that performing writes on a USB flash drive degrades the life expectancy of the device. I have heard the quantity of writes is anywhere from 100 thousand to 10 million, but I have not heard about number of read operations. Does reading from the device count toward this total? I am interested in writing only once to a flash drive and setting it to read-only. Then reading files from the device a thousand or more times per day, but am wondering if (at say 1,000 reads per day), the flash drive will need to be replaced within 100 days (assuming a 100,000 r/w cycle lifetime)?

I'm a php programmer, so the security is not an issue. What is an issue is finding a host to store 10 TB of data and not be paying a ton of money. We really are not planning on a lot of traffic.   I have extended the space of my SAN vDisk from 1TB to 1.2TB, but Windows Explorer doesn't show the new size. After resize the vdisk in the SAN Manager, the Disk Management utility shows the 200GB unallocated space, then I resized the partition to use the unallocated space to get a 1.2TB partition, the process was succesfully, but in the Windows File Explorer the disk still have 1TB of total space. Win version: Windows Storage Server Enterprise 2007. Do I need to restart the server? How can I use the new extra space without rebooting?

  I have to test a homebrew server that accepts a lot of incoming TCP traffic on a single port. The protocol is homebrew as well. For testing purposes, I'd like to send this traffic both : - to the production server (say, listening on port 12345) - to the test server (say, listening on port 23456) My clients apps are "dumb" : they never read data back, and the server never replies anyway, my server only accepts connections, and do statistical computations and store/forward/service both raw and computed data. Actually, client apps and hardware are so simple there is no way I can tell clients to send their stream on both servers... And using "fake" clients is not good enough. What could be the simplest solution ? I can of course write an intermediary app that just copy incoming data and send it back to the testing server, pretending to be the client. • Close all Mac Terminal windows, but the one running a script

  I am trying to create a shell script that runs a python simulation programing in 4 terminal windows. I have the script that launches the program four times in four separate terminal windows(total of 5 windows, 4 for the python programs, and one to control the other terminal windows). I want to now create a script that I can run in the control terminal window that closes and kills the programs of the other four terminal windows, but still have the control one open. What I have so far is something like this #!/bin/sh osascript -e 'tell app "Terminal" do script "killall python" end tell' osascript -e 'tell app "Terminal" to quit' osascript -e 'tell app "Terminal" to open' The problem is that the last line doesn't work because it closes all the windows including the one the script is executing in. I am not really familiar with shell or apple script so any help would be welcomed. I posted on Stack, but I think this might be a better place for an automation type question. Thanks

  I'm a little confused on the deployment process for Python. Let's say you create a brand new project with virtualenv source bin/activate pip install a few libraries write a simple hello world app pip freeze the dependencies When I deploy this code into a machine, do I need first make sure the machine is sourced before installing dependencies? I don't mean to sound like a total noob but in the PHP world, I don't have to worry about this because it's already part of the project. All the dependencies are registered with the autoloader in place. The steps would be: rsync the files (or any other method) source bin/activate pip install the dependencies from the pip freeze output file It feels awkward, or just wrong and very error prone. What are the correct steps to make? I've searched around but it seems many tutorials/articles make an assumption that anyone reading the article has past python experience (imo).

• Is it me or is developing web based data entry GUIs a big pain?

  Maybe it's me or maybe it isn't. I don't have a huge amount of experience of developing web based data entry software but do have some. I used to do it quite a bit years ago. Used to use Oracle Forms, Visual Studio, various 4th generation languages, and performing the user interface layout used to be a snap. Now doing the user interface for developing web applications seems to be a huge pain in the rear. Just trying to get text entry fields and widgets to go where they are supposed to go on the screen is a total pain. You have to know Javascript, CSS, JQuery, HTML, etc. There must be an easier way to develop data entry forms that produce the needed underlying code for a web page. Maybe I'm just not looking in the right place. There must be some WYSIWYG GUI development tools for the web for developing data entry forms out there. Anybody know of any?

• Something eating space on OS drive

  I am facing low disk space issue from last few days. I checked with Restore,System Volume Information, $Recycled folders. But there is nothing which is occupying space. I had scanned my system for virus too. Total size of C: is 18 GB. But when I select all folders inside C: and query for used space, it shows 20+ gb space is used. I vacate space some how by deleting temp files, program's cache files, disk clean up etc up to (3 gb). And I ensured that no cache/temp files are recreated who can use the space again. Even after cleaning so much data, I am again facing low disk space issue. Something is eating disk space within 15-20 mins.

• Virtualized CPU cores vs. threads

  We've got a KVM host system on Ubuntu 9.10 with a newer Quad-core Xeon CPU with hyperthreading. As detailed on Intel's product page, the processor has 4 cores but 8 threads. /proc/cpuinfo and htop both list 8 processors, though each one states 4 cores in cpuinfo. KVM/QEMU also reports 8 VCPUs available to assign to guests. My question is when I'm allocating VCPUs to VM guests, should I allocate per-core or per-thread? Since KVM/QEMU reports the server has 8 VCPUs to allocate, should I go ahead and set a guest to use 4 CPUs where I previously would have set it to use 2 (assuming 4 total VCPUs available)? I'd like to get the most possible out of the host hardware without over-allocating.

• Help make sense of a KillDisk error/log

  I have a hard drive that I've been trying to reformat. I tried reformatting it in the windows XP and 7 installers, and in an Ubuntu live cd with gparted. I tried using dd to 'zero' the drive as well with no success. Finally I ran across KillDisk after a search. • Grant root access without having grant access with mysql

  In attempts to learn more about apache and mysql, I've been fiddling with my local environment. Fun times. Of course, this leads to my screwing things up. So, thanks for being there. Recently, I messed up a bit in mysql. I currently don't have a root user, and the users I do have don't have grant access. So, I can create users and all that, but I can't create a root user with super powers. Besides removing and reinstalling mysql, is there a way to grant a user total access in my current situation?
