• SD Card reader not working on Sony Vaio

  This laptop (Sony Vaio VGN-Z31MN/B PCG-6z2m) has been installed with Windows 7 64 bit, all the drivers from Sony's VAIO site are installed, and everything in Device Manager both (a) has a driver and (b) shows as working, no exclamation marks or warnings. "Hide empty drives" in Folder options is disabled so the card reader appears, but will not read the card ("please insert a disk in drive O:"). Previously, when the laptop had Windows XP on it, it could read the same card. Also, Windows update suggested driver ("SD Card Reader") doesn't work, Ricoh own drivers install properly but do the same behaviour. Other 3rd party driver suggestions from forums (Acer and Texas-Instruments FlashMedia) do not seem to install properly. I would post the PCI id if I had it, but it was just showing up as rimsptsk\diskricohmemorystickstorage (while it had the Ricoh Driver installed). Edit: If there are any lower level diagnostic utlities which might shed more light on it I'd welcome hearing of them. Anything which might show get it to put troubleshooting logs in the event log or identify chipsets or whatever... • Is there any way to tweak / rotate mouse orientation? Any applications? Registry edits?

  I've got a very frustrating issue with my new Logitech Marathon Mouse M705. It is absolutely perfect for what I need, with the exception that it tracks on an angle for some reason. What I mean is when you slide the cursor to the left, it trends upward - when you slide to the right, it trends down. Moving the cursor along a flat horizontal line is no longer a natural motion - you need to fight what I suspect is a mechanical error of some kind. Unfortunately, I've already exchanged this mouse once and tested both on different Windows 7 and Mac OS machines - the problem continues to occur. So is there a software solution for me? I'm incredibly surprised there is no simple way to adjust the orientation... How can every mouse manufacturer possibly adjust their hardware to track to everyone's tastes? What about those who need to flip orientation a full 90 or 180 degrees? I only need to adjust mine a few degrees, but I'm sure that need has arisen as well. Anyway, I'm running the latest SetPoint drivers (6.00) on Windows 7 and there are no orientation options available. I've checked out uberOptions (http://uberoptions.net/) and the M705 isn't supported yet (with the last version update over 6 months ago). MAF Mouse (http://www.maf-soft.de/mafmouse/) instructions are a very strange series of mouse clicks to activate? This app also seems a little overkill and costs $$ (which I'm willing to pay as a last resort). Is there no universal registry value for mouse orientation? How about for SetPoint drivers specifically? I've done a simple search in regedit without any luck. An XML file somewhere? Anything?? Thanks a million for any help - it's driving me nuts!

Would it be universal? Can I use it or run it on any computer. Assuming that the bios allows you to boot from USB hard drive. Or even not because there's PLoP Bootmanager And has the considerable amount of memory and processor power to run the OS. What other things to consider when installing an OS in an external hard drive? Is installing in the external hard drive the same as when installing in an internal hard drive? Can I also boot multiple OS? What are the things to consider when doing this? And if you have a tutorial there. Showing how to install an OS in an external hard drive. Please link.

• Windows Backup fails with 0x80070002: "The system cannot find the file specified"

  Windows 7 Backup is failing. When backing up even a single insignificant directory (e.g. I chose only the empty "Contacts" directory, leaving all other directories unchecked), I get this error within a few seconds and the backup fails. If I uncheck all files/directories, and just do the system image - then the system image is backed up OK without issue. Backup destination is an external USB hard drive. Steps to reproduce and subsequent failure: Set up backup to go to external hard drive. Don't back up system image. Back up "Contacts" directory only for my profile. Start backup. Immediately view the status of the backup, it stays on "Creating a shadow copy..." for a few seconds, and then the backup fails. Click Options button, and it says "Check your backup / The system cannot find the file specified." - with options to "Try to run backup again" or "Change backup settings". • Xbox 360 formatting for MP4 h.264?

  For the life of me, I can't get the Xbox 360 to recognize anything other than a WMV. It's full updated with Xbox Live and I even added all the Video apps (Zune, Netflix, etc) just to see if it would force some sort of codec update. I'm using handbrake, at the moment, to try and convert an mkv with subtitles. Handbrake burns the subtitles into the video for me, which is important. I can't figure out what is missing though, as the Xbox refuses to acknowledge my MP4s. Here's the VLC codec info output: As far as I can tell, this is EXACTLY what the xbox supports. I don't want to convert every video twice by throwing it through Windows Movie Maker just to get it to WMV. None of the converters mentions above output to WMV and I don't like WMV since it's not as universal as MP4. I've tried changing the container name manually to M4V, MOV, and AVI to see if I can trick the Xbox... no beans. The video displays perfectly in WMP, of course. If I convert it to WMV, suddenly it works fine. But I don't find this acceptable, as I know the Xbox is supposed to support other filetypes. If anyone knows why my Xbox won't play anything but WMVs, I would be very appreciative to know why! It's driving me nuts. The only other information I can think to include is that it's about 3 years old and of the cheapest variety (Xbox Arcade). I've added a hard drive, xbox live, and have thoroughly updated it. Maybe there's a specific video update I'm unaware of??

• Printer deployment via Group Policy not working on a single system

  One of my coworkers just got a new laptop running Windows 7 Pro x64. We use a GPO to deploy the printers to every system, but for some reason it is not working on this system. I have been breaking my head over this for the past 3 hours now without any result. The strange thing is that gpresult /H seems to indicate that the GPO did run. • Installing GitHub for Mac - "Github cannot be opened because of a probem"

  I'm trying to get started using Git for Mac, but I receive an error when I try to run the program. I'm new to GitHub and relatively new to Mac. First, I installed Git using the downloadable .dmg file named "git-1.7.12.3-intel-universal-snow-leopard". I ran the .pkg file contained therein and the install seemed to work fine. I'm using a new macbook pro w/ retina. Then I downloaded the Github for Mac installer, "mac_GitHub for Mac 69.zip". When I double-click the file, it shows that there is a single file of type "Application". Double-clicking that application file produces the error: "GitHub cannot be opened because of a problem". Here are the partial details of that error: Application Specific Information: dyld: launch, loading dependent libraries Dyld Error Message: Library not loaded: @executable_path/../Frameworks/Rebel.framework/Rebel Referenced from: /Applications/GitHub.app/Contents/MacOS/GitHub Reason: no suitable image found. • Logitech webcam device only recognised by one software, without drivers

  A couple weeks ago I purchased a Logitech webcam at a garage sale; It did not come with any driver DVDs or anything like that. I plugged it in, turned on my computer, and continued work as usual. I did not at the time (and still have not) gotten any drivers for the device. Recently, though, I started up an audio software named as Cubase, only to find that it was picking up audio reads off of... something. I checked my sound card, and everything else plugged into my computer, but couldn't find where in the world this audio was being picked up from. There were no microphones listed in the device managers, and no "unknown devices" or whatever. Everything seemed as it always was. Running out of ideas, i blew an air-horn directly into the general area of the webcam, located directly in front of me. Sure enough, the audio peaked, indicating that the microphone was definitely in the webcam and that Cubase was somehow picking up this audio, even without drivers. The software lists the device as a "Universal USB Microphone". Adobe Audition, Soundbooth, and other audio applications cannot find the device either. Why is it that this one software (Cubase) can use this device without a driver, while every other piece of software on the computer can't? Not even the operating system can recognize it. • Logging hurts MySQL performance - but, why?

  I'm quite surprised that I can't see an answer to this anywhere on the site already, nor in the MySQL documentation (section 5.2 seems to have logging otherwise well covered!) If I enable binlogs, I see a small performance hit (subjectively), which is to be expected with a little extra IO -- but when I enable a general query log, I see an enormous performance hit (double the time to run queries, or worse), way in excess of what I see with binlogs. Of course I'm now logging every SELECT as well as every UPDATE/INSERT, but, other daemons record their every request (Apache, Exim) without grinding to a halt. Am I just seeing the effects of being close to a performance "tipping point" when it comes to IO, or is there something fundamentally difficult about logging queries that causes this to happen? I'd love to be able to log all queries to make development easier, but I can't justify the kind of hardware it feels like we'd need to get performance back up with general query logging on. I do, of course, log slow queries, and there's negligible improvement in general usage if I disable this. (All of this is on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, MySQLd 5.1.49, but research suggests this is a fairly universal issue)

• Cannot Install Bootcamp on Mac Fusion Drive

  I have two drive installed in my mid-2013 Macbook pro. It is running osx maverick. I set the two drives (an ssd and a regular HD) up using the fusion drive (following the diy fusion drive guides out there). I went ahead and created a 40gb partition to host my windows install. I removed the SSD, installed windows, then reinstalled the SSD. As soon as the ssd was placed back in the bootcamp partition stopped booting. I get a blinking cursor on a black screen. I checked out the partition info in disk utility and it appears that the windows partition is not marked bootable. Below is some info I managed to gather. • What determines what resolutions a laptop is willing to output over VGA?

  I'm responsible for several conference rooms and have setup 1080p projectors and I provide both HDMI and VGA connectivity. HDMI for DisplayPort and Mini-DisplayPort, and VGA as a fallback, universal option. Contrary to what I expected, people seem to have much more trouble with the HDMI than VGA, so VGA gets used a lot more than you'd think (even as most workstation laptops made in the last 3-4 years have DisplayPort or Mini-DisplayPort...). Also to my surprise, VGA outputs over 1080p on a 50ft cable run with very minimal degradation on certain laptops - other laptops just don't offer 1080p as a resolution choice and top out at 1600x1200 or something else. Specific example: a ThinkPad W530 will do 1080p, a W520 won't, over VGA. (both do 1080p over displayport/mini-DP) What determines what resolutions a laptop is willing to output over VGA? I'm thinking this will come down to either a video driver that says it supports only certain resolutions for output, or limitations of the RAMDAC (which wouldn't be in play, at least DAC wise, on a digital output, but WOULD on VGA, an analog output). The basic reason for the question is that I noticed, say, a ThinkPad W520 with 1080p built in display, will output 1080p fine over DisplayPort to a 1080p projector, but will cap out at 1600x1200 (practically the same pixel count, just a little shy) on VGA. Now, this wouldn't be surprising at all except SOME laptops have no issue outputting 1080p over VGA, even with lower native resolutions. Why do I care? Well if there's some way I could enable it... for situations where my users end up using VGA anyway, it's preferable for display mirroring if they can output their laptop's native resolution, which, you guessed it, is very often 1080p on 15" models. DISCLAIMER: This is primarily a curiosity, I'm not claiming 1080p over VGA is ideal by any means, but hey, if it works. I've seen HDMI start artifacting more over same-length, same gauge cabling (up to 50' run in certain rooms). If you think this is better suited to SuperUser, please move it, but this is framed from an IT standpoint of something that affects a real pool of users in a multiple conference room, 50+ deployed laptop scenario.

• Webcam becomes "Unknown Device" after Windows Messenger 2011 is installed

  I have Sony VAIO VGN-NS290J laptop. I installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. I was able to find drivers for all hardware without any problems. Recently, I installed Microsoft Windows Live Essentials 2011, i.e. Windows Live Messenger 2011. Ever since that application is running on my computer, my webcam is not recognized by the OS any more. It is listed as the "Unknown Device" and placed in the Universal Serial Bus controllers group in the Device Manager. There don't seem to be any drivers for this webcam. It's a standard Sony Motion Eye web camera and Sony does not offer any drivers for it. There is one application to download that utilizes the camera, but there are no drivers (and the system is showing the same behavior regardless of the presence of the application). It happens from time to time that the webcam becomes recognized by the OS again, after a couple of restarts; but not always. Then it becomes unknown again. I am absolutely positive that this issue is caused by the Windows Live Messenger 2011, because same symptoms caused the same effects before. I wish to be able to continue to use this software, but also to use my webcam. I was wondering if anyone had a similar issue and if there is a way to fix it. Thanks for all the help, I appreciate it. Update: I have discovered a pattern - if the camera goes astray, restarting the machine does not bring it back; but switching the computer off and turning it back on does. Every time! • Intel D2500HN Atom D2500 Doesn't turn on

  I recently bought parts from Amazon to build an embedded PC, and have assembled everything. I have: Intel D2500HN Mini-ITX Motherboard Mini-Box Pico-PSU 80 M350 Universal Min-ITX Enclosure 2GB DDR3 Memory Kinamax AD-LCD12 LCD Monitors 12V 6A 72W AC Adapter Power Supply The motherboard gets a light (on the motherboard, not on the Pico-PSU) when I plug it into the power adapter. Furthermore, I see the power switch light come on when I press the power button. However, the display doesn't turn on, and it doesn't seem that the PC is actually turned on. Since I'm seeing these lights, I know that the motherboard is getting power. Furthermore, the display VGA port is embedded into the motherboard, so that's not the issue. I'm just trying to figure out what COULD be the issue aside from a faulty motherboard. I have a diagram of the D2500HN motherboard which labels everything, and have ensured that the power LED as well as the On/Off cables are plugged into the right spots, although to be sure I've tried flipping these two cables around, and also plugging 1 cable into the other cable's spot & vice-versa. Is there anything else you folks think I may be missing, or anything else I can do to try to troubleshoot this issue before sending the motherboard back?

  Our MySQL server seems to be using a lot of memory. I've tried looking for slow queries and queries with no index and have halved the peak CPU usage and Apache memory usage but the MySQL memory stays constantly at 2.2GB (~51% of available memory on the server). Here's the graph from Plesk. Running top in the SSH window shows the same figures. Does anyone have any ideas on why the memory usage is constant like this and not peaks and troughs with usage of the app? • Updating a backup image (.wim and/or Acronis .tib)

  Anyways, I've got a Windows 7 installation that I want to make a generalized backup image of so I can use it for future installs on not only my desktop from which the image is to be derived from, but also other systems with dissimilar hardware. Therefore I've arrived at either 2 options, using either sysprep/imagx from WAIK (guide here), or the simpler Acronis True Image w/ their Universal Restore addon. Of course, they create distinct image file types, .wim and .tib respectively. What I'd like to do is to periodically update this image, say with Windows Updates, by booting it to either a physical partition or using virtualization (VirtualBox/VMWare), perform the updates, and save the updated .wim or .tib image file again. What's the simplest way I could do this? Another question is, I created this generalized backup image on a 500GB Seagate 7200RPM HDD. Say I get an SSD as an OS drive in the future, can I just deploy this backup image to the SSD normally, or are there any potential problems to be aware/avoid (ie. is it best to completely reinstall the OS on the SSD from scratch, or can I use the image created on the normal HDD with no issue)?   [Running Win7 Ultimate 64 bit] My new HP Pavilion Elite HPE-450t has been plagued by BSDO crashes since I got it about 5 weeks ago. The crashes are somewhat rare, sometimes not occurring for 3 or 4 days. • Connecting a network printer via a Thecus N2100 - works in Vista, not in Windows 7

  I have a Lexmark E250d printer attached to a Thecus N2100 NAS. On Windows Vista I've managed to configure this using an "Internet" printer port with the URL of http://thecus:631/printers/usb-printer. I can add a printer in a similar way in Windows 7, but it never manages to print the test page. If I go to "Configure Port" in Vista, it just has "Security Options" - on Windows 7 it's asking about Raw mode vs LPR mode etc. On Vista I'm using an E250d-specific driver from Lexmark; on Windows 7 there's a Microsoft E250d driver, or a Universal PCL XL driver from Lexmark... I wouldn't expect this different to be related to the problem, but I thought I'd mention it anyway. (Lexmark doesn't have a Windows 7 E250d-specific driver as far as I can see.) Any suggestions? I was thinking of upgrading my main laptop from Vista to Windows 7, but I'd really like to get this sorted first... • How to fix a bootable USB Kubuntu installation when the drive has maxed out?

  I used Universal-USB-Installer-v1.5.1 from PenDriveLinux.com with Kubuntu 10.04 so I could set up my 4GB flash drive as a totally independent installation. Unfortunately, there was an OS upgrade available which Kubuntu downloaded and attempted to install. This, along with some other software, apparently maxed out my drive before I realized it. Now when I try to boot from the drive, everything boots as normal to the OS boot screen where I select "Boot from this Kubuntu USB Installation." The startup process initiates, then stalls about halfway through and hangs indefinitely. I'm guessing the drive is trying to use space it doesn't have and completely stops working. I realize that once the OS upgrade is in place, the old files could be deleted for a potential 700MB space gain. However, I just have no way to get into the OS and complete the upgrade. My main OS is Windows 7. Is there a way I can fix this issue from within Windows without formatting the entire drive and reinstalling Kubuntu from scratch?

  On a Debian 6 VPS, I'm running PHP 5.4 via mod_fcgid on a couple of different virtual hosts, managed by Virtualmin GPL. At random, I get 500 Internal Server Errors; restarting Apache brings everything back to normality. • Is USB supported in safe mode on XP?

  According Microsoft, "Universal Serial Bus Devices Do Not Work in Safe Mode" under XP. However, in my testing this is incorrect. USB keyboards, mice and flash drives seem to work fine in safe mode (I made sure the BIOS was not providing support). This makes sense because a failure of a standard input device would be, in Microsoft parlance, a "bad user experience". So, Is USB supported in safe mode on XP? If your answer is no (agreeing with Microsoft), please provide a test case, preferably in a virtual machine, where a standard HID keyboard or mouse fails. Please state hardware / BIOS / OS configuration. Note that you will need a PS/2 keyboard attached in addition to your USB device(s) in order to use the boot menu. Virtual machine software usually emulates a PS/2 keyboard. Alternatively, you could add the /safeboot switch to boot.ini. If your answer is yes, please provide a link to some supporting documentation (either from Microsoft or someone authoritative). Your answer might be "devices X, Y and Z are supported but nothing else", in which case also give a link.
