  • Rails: How to preload a message to user

    I have a Rails based prelaunch site that has some rotating background images (which are important for selling the idea of the site) that are taking too long to load, such that the users are leaving the site before they load. The only thing they're seeing is the email submission box. What's a good way to show a message to the users that the site will take some time to load but then have that message disappear after a reasonable period of time. I'm guessing a jQuery fadeOut() with a timer, but I'm not sure how long to set the timer for, because I'm not sure at what time it would start counting. Any suggestions?

  • Create rails record from two ids

    The functionality I'm trying to build allows Users to Visit a Restaurant. I have Users, Locations, and Restaurants models. Locations have many Restaurants. I've created a Visits model with user_id and restaurant_id attributes, and a visits_controller with create and destroy methods. Thing is, I can't create an actual Visit record. Any thoughts on how I can accomplish this? Or am I going about it the wrong way.   • Byte manipulation in PHP

    In PHP, if you have a variable with binary data, how do you get specific bytes from the data? For example, if I have some data that is 30 bytes long, how do I get the first 8 bytes? Right now, I'm treating it like a string, using the substr() function: $data = //... $first8Bytes = substr($data, 0, 8); Is it safe to use substr with binary data? Or are there other functions that I should be using? Thanks.

  • What are the options for setting up a UNIX environment to learn C using Kernighan and Richie's The C Programming Language?

    I'm a novice programmer and have been experimenting with Javascript, jQuery and PHP but felt I wasn't getting a real depth of understanding of what I was doing. So, after reading Joel Spolsky's response to a question on this site (which I can't find now!), I took it back to basics and read Charles Petzold's 'Code' and am about to move onto Kernighan and Richie's The C Programming Language. I want to learn this in a UNIX environment but only have access to a Windows system. I have Ubuntu 12.04 running on a virtualised machine via VMWare Player, and done some coding in the terminal. Is using a Linux distro the only option for programming in a UNIX environment on Windows? And what are the next steps to start programming in C in UNIX and where do I get a compiler from?

  • Wrapping up an Exciting Mobile World Congress

    Its been a busy week here in Barcelona, with noticeably more energy at the show than in 2010. This year, we decided to move the Java booth to the App Planet and really engage with the increasing number of developers that are attending the event. Our booth featured 10 demos and a series of nearly 25 workshops featuring a variety of topics ranging from information about Java Verified, to the use of web technologies with Java ME, to sessions hosted by Operators such as Orange and Telefonica (see image to the left).One of the more popular topics in our booth was the use of Java in the Smart Grid. In our booth we were showing off some of the work of the Hydra Consortium whose goal it is to leverage the emerging smart grid infrastructure to securely enable the delivery of personal health data (weight, blood pressure, etc) from the home to your doctor. I'm open to what the username would be, as long as its intuitive for the user. The name fields can be tricky, as the data looks like this: Albert Abongo (2 names) Stephen Michael Essuah Ackah (4 names) Alhaji Iddrisu Abdul-KArim (3 names) I guess my ideal usernames for these people would be aabongo sackah aabdul-karim

    I'm about to buy an iTouch, mainly because of the iCal. I'm a Windows user, so does anyone know if these two play well together? I'd prefer to be able to update my calendar from either the computer or iTouch and sync. I've searched Google, but I'm sceptic so far.   • Sum if ONLY all the cells have a value?

    Hi I need to sum 9 cells of data, each one on a separate sheet, but always in the same location. I only want a figure returned when all the cells have data, even if it's a 0. But, if one of the cells is blank I want a blank return. I'm trying to get my head around, making it up actually, where the IFs and ISBLANK and SUMS would go. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. SUM(IF(ISBLANK(RANGEA,OR(RANGEB),0,ALLRANGES))) Many thanks Michael

  • Is there a way to simulate a remote AMF call with WCAT?

    I managed to use WCAT to test an url for an aspx page getting an asset. Now I would like to use it to test a remote call to WebORB from Flex. Problem is I don't know what to put in RequestData, RequestHeader, ... If I look with Charles (HTTP Monitor), then it's impossible to copy paste the request data (it has squares and all kind of weird characters that can't be copy paste to my txt file).
