Need an advice for ASP.NET MVC2 Newsletter Project

I'm new in ASP.NET MVC2. But I want to develop a simply Newsletter site. The main problem which stuck me is how correctly use MVC pattern in News details and comments list. For example: I have a NewsController and action Details inside. And two model classes News and Comments. I want show all comments belongs to this News record and textarea for adding new comments. I wand display all this content in /News/Details/ How can i do it? I tried use PartialViews in Details View: one for Adding Comment and another for Comment list. I have passed comment object thorough ViewData["Comment"]. But i have problems with my models (think I cant use two models in View) Again. How can I display Single Post + Comments + add comment view at single page using ASP.NET MVC2? Another Example is stackoverflow.com. Here is an question + answers + write answer. Stop SQL returning the same result twice in a JOIN

I have joined together several tables to get data i want but since I am new to SQL i can't figure out how to stop data being returned more than once. her's the SQL statement; SELECT T.url, T.ID, S.status, S.ID, E.action, E.ID, E.timestamp FROM tracks T, status S, events E WHERE S.ID AND T.ID = E.ID ORDER BY E.timestamp DESC The data that is returned is something like this; +----------------------------------------------------------------+ | URL | ID | Status | ID | action | ID | timestamp | +----------------------------------------------------------------+ | T.1 | 4 | hello | 4 | has uploaded a track | 4 | time | | T.2 | 3 | bye | 3 | has some news | 3 | time | | t.1 | 4 | more | 4 | has some news | 4 | time | +----------------------------------------------------------------+ That's a very basic example but does outline what happens. If you look at the third row the URL is repeated when there is a different status. This is very important. The action in the events table is inserted on trigger of a status or track insert. If a new track is inserted the action is 'has uploaded a track' and you guess what it is for a status. The ID and timestamp is also inserted into the events table at this point. Note: There are more tables that go into the query, 3 more in fact, but I have left them out for simplicity.

On Windows 7, dir or tree can't show unicode characters, even starting cmd with cmd /U So I would press Window Key + R to run something, and type in cmd /U so that the content might handle Unicode. And then using dir or tree /F, the content in Unicode won't show as Unicode. (in Window Explorer (file manager), the Unicode will show) Is there a way to handle it? To get Unicode characters to test your filenames, you can go to http://news.google.com/news?edchanged=1&ned=tw and you will be able to get many Unicode characters there (UTF-8)

What do I do, do you know of other tools that can burn / extract iso file contents to a flash drive? My search what the Cloud will mean for my Work, part 2

My experience with the cloud and why work will change and not disappear. Until now I have multiple experiences with the cloud, for the most good. i have worked on multiple cloud solutions in the past but let me describe them as 0.x versions. For me the 1st real serious cloud experience was a bit more than 1 year ago, when our company switched from an in house server to Microsoft BPOS as a complete replacement. Since we are a small consultancy firm and don’t have that much else to do than consulting, our IT requirements are quite simple. We need Mail and Storage space for our documents. With the in house server we had multiple outages during a year, mostly by lack of administering. Being consultants in the field and hardly having time to maintain a server, BPOS was and still is for us the right solution. Since the migration we have less outages and a much more robust solution. Have we run into issues with BPOS for our own environment? No not that I’m aware of. Based on this experience I made a stance about deploy ability of BPOS and cloud solutions, they are suitable for MKB (Dutch for Medium and Small Businesses). Most Small businesses don’t have the amount of work to hire a full time it admin. Hiring a service provider to maintain their own server might be even more costly than hiring an admin. So seeing the capabilities of BPOS and the needs of most businesses I see it as a great solution that gives the business a complete Server replacement solution for a fixed price per user. resulting in a clear budget for IT spending, something most small businesses were looking for, for a long time. So right now I’m deploying BPOS with a customer, and I run into some of the Cloud 1.0 issues. In my opinion BPOS is a good working Cloud version 1.0 solution. What do I mean with 1.0? Well 1.0 is mostly a tested solution (unlike 0.x versions) but still have quite some limitations caused by too few market experience. in my opnion this is also the reason why we don’t see that much BPOS customers yet and why I think Office 365 will make a huge difference. What I have seen of 365 shows me it is a Cloud 2.0 version, meaning it has all needed features and is much more flexible to the customer. This is also why I see changes happen in my work field, changes and not unemployment due to Cloud solutions. Cloud 1.0 solutions gave me the idea that if every customer would adopt them I would be out of work. But in reality Cloud 1.0 solutions are here just to set the market needs. The Cloud 2.0 and higher versions will give the customer much more flexibility, but also require the need for a consultant. Where the 1.0 versions are simple to setup and maintain, the 2.0 solution needs more thought upfront and afterwards. ie. BPOS in its 1.0 version brings you a very simplified Exchange 2007 solution, Suitable for some customers. Looking at Office 365 you receive almost a full blown Exchange 2010 solution. I expect this to be even more customizable in the next version. In my search for the changes to my work I try to regulary write a post with my thought around the Cloud and the impact on my work as a consultant. Comparing Isis, Google, and Paypal

Back in 2010 I was sure NFC would make great strides, but here we are two years later and NFC doesn't seem to be sticking. The obvious reason being the chicken-and-egg problem. Retailers don't want to install the terminals until the phones support NFC, and vice-versa. So consumers continue to sit on the sidelines waiting for either side to blink and make the necessary investment. In the meantime, EMV is looking for a way to sneak into the US with the help of the card brands. There are currently three major solutions that are battling in the marketplace. All three know that replacing mag-stripe alone is not sufficient to move consumers. Long-term it's the offers and loyalty programs combined with tendering that make NFC attractive. NFC solutions cross lots of barriers, so a strong partner system is required. The solutions need to include the carriers, card brands, banks, handset manufacturers, POS terminals, and most of all lots of merchants. Lots of coordination is necessary to make the solution seamless to the consumer. Google Wallet Google's problem has always been that only the Nexus phone has an NFC chip that supports their wallet. There are a couple of additional phones out there now, but adoption is still slow. They acquired Zavers a while back to incorporate digital coupons, but the the bulk of their users continue to be non-NFC. They have taken an open approach by not specifying particular payment brands. Google is piloting in San Francisco and New York, supporting both MasterCard PayPass and stored value. I suppose the other card brands may eventually follow. There's no cost for consumers or merchants -- Google will make money via targeted ads. Isis Not long after Google announced its wallet, AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile announced a joint venture called Isis. They are in the unique position of owning the SIM in the phones they issue. At first it seemed Isis was a vehicle for the carriers to compete with the existing card brands, but Isis later switched to a generic wallet that supports the major card brands. Isis reportedly charges issuers a $5 fee per customer per year. Isis will pilot this summer in Salt Lake City and Austin. PayPal PayPal, the clear winner in the online payment space beyond traditional credit cards, is trying to move into physical stores. After negotiations with Google to provide a wallet broke off, PayPal decided to avoid NFC altogether, at least for now, and focus on payments without any physical card or phone. By avoiding NFC, consumers don't need an NFC-enabled phone and merchants don't need a new reader. Consumers must enter their phone number and PIN in the merchant's existing device, or they can enter their PIN in the PayPal inStore app running on their phone, then show the merchant a unique barcode which authorizes payment. Paypal is free for consumers and charges a fee for merchants. Its not clear, at least to me, how PayPal handles fraudulent transactions and whether the consumer is protected. The wildcard is, of course, Apple. Their mobile technologies set the standard, so incorporating NFC chips would certainly accelerate adoption of many payment solutions. Their announcement today of the iOS Passbook is a step in the right direction, but stops short of handling payments. For those retailers that have invested in modern terminals, it seems the best strategy is to support all the emerging solutions and let the consumers choose the winner.

I need to read some .docx files and the standard 3.0.1 version of OpenOffice writer that comes with Unbuntu 9.04 just ain't handling it. I tried the instructions from the following site: http://news.softpedia.com/news/How-to-Install-OpenOffice-org-3-1-on-Ubuntu-9-04-111105.shtml, both the GUI steps in the main article, and a scripted version in one of the comments, but my system never seems to do the partial update, and the OpenOffice version is unchanged after I uninstall and reinstall it from the command line. Has anybody had similar problems?

Apache rewrite - optional parameters?

I'm creating SEO friendly urls for my news page. My links look like this : www.site.com/1234/the-pretty-url-string/ RewriteRule ^([^/])/([^/])/$ /news.php?sid=$1&url=$2 [L] This works great, but I like to have more flexability. I want to be able to accept urls like : www.site.com/1234 www.site.com/1234/ so then I can do some php $GET's and figure out if anything is missing - and 301 to the proper URL of my choice. I would like the &url=$2 to be optional.

I'm creating an iPad app, and I have two classes: NWRootViewController : UITableViewController and UINewFeedViewController : UIViewController. Drupal 6: Drupal Themer gives same candidate name for different type of content types

Hi friends, I'm a drupal newbie... I have different type of contents like News, Events, etc. and their content is different. News detail page has title-content text-date. but Events detail page has title-date-content text-location-speaker-etc. So I need different layout page for these different types. So, I enabled Drupal Themer to get a candidate name. for events page, it gave me page-node.tpl.php and it gives same for News page as well :( how can I separate these pages? I expected sth like page-event-node.tpl , but no... :/ Drupal Themer also give unique candidate name for event page like page-node-18.tpl.php but it doesnt mean anything since I can not create a general layout for all events by this node name. :( Appreciate helps so much!! Repository pattern - Switch out the database and switch in XML files. Hello I have an asp.net MVC 2.0 project and I have followed the Repository pattern. Periodically, I am losing access to the database server so I want to have another mechanism in place (XML files) to continue developing. It is not possible to have a local version of the db unfortunately! I thought this would be relatively easy using the Repository pattern, to switch out the db repositories and switch in XML versions. However, I am having real trouble coming up with a solution. I have tried LinqToXML but then ran into problems trying to return a List of News items as the LinqToXML ToList returns Generic.List Should I be mapping the XElement list over to the News list by hand? It just seems a bit clunky compared to LinqToSQL attributes on the News class and then simply doing a Table.....ToList(); Any direction would be appreciated. Thanks

301 versus inline rewrites

I'm in the process of adding 'pretty' URLs to an existing CMS, the menu is auto generated and the new 'pretty' URLs are to be handled independently as a seperate module. The auto-generated menu allways has URLs that look like this index.php?menu_id=n which ofcourse we would like to see as eg. /news or /products I'm currently at the point where I have to decide if I'm going to rewrite all output of the current system or simply put in a hook where I redirect to the 'pretty' URL. To put it differently, should i connect to the database, fetch all 'pretty' URLs, run through the existing output from WYSIWYG's, news modules, forums etc. and do some str_replace or other string manipulation (which I think would be a rather tedious and boring process), or should I simply hook in and throw a 301 redirecting index.php?menu_id=3 to /news will Google (or other search engines) penalize me for having 301's in the menus?

How to find connected hosts at network (vpn or lan)

Hello, I'm looking for possible solutions to the following need: I have a VPN configured (using openVPN over Linux, BTW), and I want to know at any moment which hosts are connected to it. I recognize that it probably is the same thing as trying to know which hosts are connected to a lan, so any of the solutions might do the job... The fact is that I once used a hamachi vpn on linux and with it I had the chance to know which hosts were connected to a particular network where I belonged, so I was wondering if something similar might be possible in openVPN (or even any VPN and/or any LAN). Preferably, I'm looking for opensource/free sw solutions, or maybe the hints to program it myself (in the most simple way if possible, not that I don't know how to program, but I'm trying to achieve this in a simple manner). Unable to save to wincache from cakePHP shell

I'm trying to retrieve the weather from wunderground.com through their API, and store it in wincache. For testing purposes I made this function in the News model: public function updateWeather(){ $results = file_get_contents('http://api.wunderground.com/api/**api_key**/conditions/q/CA/Montreal.json'); $results = json_decode($results); return Cache::write('weather', $results); } It works fine when I call this from the controller. However, I can't figure why that same function doesn't work when called from the console. I made this shell in order to eventually add this to windows task scheduler. class WeatherShell extends AppShell { public $uses = array('News'); public function main() { $this->News->updateWeather(); } } When running this, I see that $results is correctly populated. I get 'true' from Cache::write(), however, I get 'false' when trying to read. What subtlety am I missing?

Hi, all. I have application with 2 groups of models - content based (news, questions) and "something" based (devices, applications etc). I need to link all models between groups - for example question may belongs to 3 different things - one application and 2 devices. The same - for news. From other side - i need to see all news articles and questions related to some application or device. Any idea how to develop this in rails? I have only one idea - mixins that will add methods content_id and thing_id to models and join table.

Best way to tackle global hotkey processing in c#?

Hi all I'd like to have multiple global hotkeys in my new app (to control the app from anywhere in windows), and all of the given sources/solutions I found on the web seem to provide with a sort of a limping solution (either solutions only for one g.hotkey, or solutions that while running create annoying mouse delays on the screen). I will be displaying news feeds from external websites on my website. So i need to open external links in those feeds in a new window, but give the user an option to return to my website. Basically I'm trying to replicate Google Images' technique of opening a link in a window with 2 frames - with the top frame having an option to "Remove Frame" and the bottom frame displaying the content of the link. Also, since the news feed will be dynamic, I don't want to hard-code anything. The code should be used automatically by any link appearing in the news feeds. Any ideas on how to do it?

Rails messing up with HTTP POST Params

Our app provides an API that people can use to submit URLs like this: curl -X POST http://app.local/resource -d'url=http://news.google.com/newshl=en&q=obama&um=1&ie=UTF-8&output=rss' Unfortunately, it seems that Rails messes up with this param. Any idea on how to fix this? R webscraping: interrogating for date and importance

I am able to webscrape a table from a webpage containing news library(XML) webpage <- "http://www.tradingeconomics.com/calendar" tables <- readHTMLTable(webpage ) n.rows <- unlist(lapply(tables, function(t) dim(t)[1])) dfcal <- as.data.frame(tables$calendar) However I do not know how to interrogate for date or for importance. For example how could I webscrape news from Jan 2014? I am able to do this on the webpage by altering button settings, but how can I do it from within R? I was also not able to collect the importance column data. Also are there better ways for collecting economic news from within R? I have looked on http://www.rseek.org/ but could not find anything. Thank you for your help.
