  • "Error loading operating system": Win7/Vista

    Hey fellas, Have this computer for about 2 years now. Originally had Vista installed, now have Windows 7 installed. Both on separate hard drives. Also have another drive used strictly for media. About a week ago, the Vista hard drive started going on its way out. Was getting problems on startup. After a few BIOS settings, I was able to get into Windows 7 and everything was fine. However, I started remembering the startup issues, so I deleted the bootup for Vista under msconfig. Didn't restart the computer at that time, though. For a few days, everything was ok. Last night I play a little poker, then hit the hay. I wake up to a good ole "Error loading operating system" on the screen. Just wonderful. Looks like the computer restarted overnight (auto updates, anyone?). So, after a big of finagling and half hearted tries, I can't get past the "Error loading operating system" screen. FWIW, in the BIOS it can see my hard drives fine. So I move on. I get my Windows 7 installation disk to try and do a repair. Go in the BIOS, change boot priority to DVD drive, and we're on our merry way. After loading from the disc, I first try jumping into the "Repair your computer" section. That opens up the System Recovery Options. However, this is where the problem comes into play. I don't see any operating systems here. Nada. What's odd though is if I click on the Load Drivers button, I can see my Windows 7 partition (C:), and can go through the files and folders without issue. What do I do at this point? I can't repair it. It seems like I can traverse the hard drive without issue when in an open dialog in the System Recovery Options, but I'm getting the good ole "Error loading computer" on bootup. Suggestions? Thanks all!!

    Hello, I was discussing with my others personalities, and came up with a conflict. In http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc938440.aspx , says that FAT32 is faster when using smaller volumes. Ok separate disk, will give more performance than same disk. But did anyone test this? Scenario 1 : Separate hard disk FAT32 (small volume) Scenario 2 : Separate hard disk NTFS which one will win? minimum gain?

  • Why do my files fail checksums when transferring to esata dive but not when transfered off the external?

    I have been using teracopy to verify and the large movie files show artifacting after transfer and fail checksum, small files do not fail, only large files seem to. When I transfer files off the external hard drive no such failure of checksums occur on any of the files, could this be a bad cable, or maybe a bad external interface or esata interface on my computer, I have tried two interfaces for esata, one with a pci card the other on the motherboard, both with similar results, so what maybe the reason if a bad hard drive or external case maybe the problem?

    We are in the process of backing up our hard drives to Blu Rays. I am creating tar.gz files and burning them to Blu Ray. Is it possible to use a simple (preferably Python-based) solution for creating images of those tar.gz files, of a predetermined size (to fit in the Blu Ray), and simply burn this images to the disc? Do you have any other approach for creating physical back-up of your hard drives?

  • Change dead disk in DPM 2010

    I was backuping data on an 1Gb hard drive with DPM 2010. This disk died but I replace it with another 1Gb hard drive. But I don't find how to recreate data structure on this new drive from previous protection group. Protection group were red. I delete the disk in "administration disks", now protection group are green but they don't save data and I don't see any menu to change the disk destination. how to do ? thanks

  • Finding underlying cause of Window 7 Account corruption.

    I have been having trouble with my Sister's computer which I built. It is running Windows 7 Ultimate x64. The problem is that I have had problems with the accounts becoming corrupted. First problems manifest themselves in the form of Windows saying the profile failed to be loaded properly and a temporary profile. Eventually the account will not allow login at all. An error message along the lines the authentication service failing the login. I have found information about this problem and how to fix it. The problem being that something has corrupted the account profile and backing up and recreating the accounts fixes the problem. I have been able to fix things and get logins working again but over the period of usually about a week it happens again. Bit by bit the accounts corrupt and then it is back to square one. I am frustrated because I don't know what the underlying cause of the problem is i.e. what is causing the accounts to be corrupted in the first place. At the moment I am just treating the symptoms. I was hoping someone who may have more experience with dealing with this problem might be able to help me find the root cause. Some articles suggest that Norton Internet Security is a big culprit of this problem which is installed. I could try uninstalling Norton and see if it helps. The one thing which is different about this computer to any other I have built is that it has a solid state drive. Actually it has both a hard drive and solid state drive. The documents and settings i.e. the Users directory is stored on the hard drive. This was done following an article about moving the user account data onto a separate drive on Windows 7 which I found on the Internet. Moving the User accounts is more of a pain under Windows 7 and this solution involved creating a low level file system link to the folder from the boot drive (Solid State) to the Hard Drive. The idea is that the computer behaves just as if it is accessing the User's folder from the boot drive but actually the data is stored on the hard drive. This may have nothing to do with the cause of the problem but due to the problem being user account corruption it is a possibility I have not been able to rule out. Any help would be appreciated as I would be glad to see the back of this problem.

  • NTFS External Drive takes too long to takes data in Mac ?

    I've an Seagate 500 GB external HD (NTFS). To read/write it on Mac (OSX 10.6.2) , I've tried MacFUSE and NTFS-3G to write my HD on Mac. Though I could be able to see the hard drive, it takes too long to see the contents like this is this normal ? also the data transfer takes too long time and the hard disk becomes too hot . Any suggestions are most welcome.

Both systems uses ZFS and were independently created with a zpool name of 'rpool'. While running Solaris 10u8 on the first disk, how do I mount the second ZFS hard disk (at /dev/dsk/c1d1s0) on an arbitrary mount point (like /a) for diagnostics?

  • Google is blocking our requests due to "automated queries"; what's the best way to find out why?

    This started a few weeks ago and we thought it was a virus so we checked every computer and all though 50%(Yeah, that's right) were infected once they were cleaned the problem didn't go away. It's really frustrating so I want to figure it out so I need suggestions on how to find the culprit. I think the router has logging but it logs everyone so it's hard to tell and I might be able to setup a proxy but again it's hard to tell when and what to monitor. What are your suggestions?

  • Linux software Raid 10 no superblock

    I have a software raid 10 with 6 x 2tb hard drives (raid 1 for /boot), ubuntu 10.04 is the os. I had a raid controller failure that put 2 drives out of sync, crashed the system and initially the os didnt boot up and went into initramfs instead, saying that drives were busy but I eventually managed to bring the raid up by stopping and assembling the drives. The os booted up and said that there were filesystem errors, I chose to ignore because it would remount the fs in read-only mode if there was a problem. Everything seemed to be working fine and the 2 drives started to rebuild, I was sure that it was a sata controller failure because I had dma errors in my log files. The os crashed soon after that with ext errors. Now its not bringing up the raid, it says that there is no superblock on /dev/sda2. I tried to reassemble manually with all the device names but it still would not bring up the raid 10 complaining about the missing superblock on sda2, and sda1 was also dropped from the raid 1. When I did examine on the raid10 it says that 1 of the initially failed drives is a spare, the other is spare rebuilding and sda2 is removed. It seems that sda decided to fail right when the system was vulnerable to it because when I boot up a live cd it spews out sda unrecoverable read failures. I have been trying to fix this all week but I'm not sure where to go with this now, I ordered more hard drives because I didn't have a complete backup, but its too late for that now and the only thing I could do is mirror all the hard drives onto the new ones (I'm not sure whether sda was mirrored without errors). On the internet I read that you can recover from this by recreating the array with the same options as when it was made, however because sda is failing I cant use it and I don't want to risk using its mirror instead, so I'm waiting to get another hard drive. I'm also not sure whether to include the out of sync drives or if I can actually use those instead to recover the array. Sorry if this is a mess to read but I've been trying to fix this all day and its late at night now, any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated. I also did a memtest and changed the motherboard in addition to everything else.   • Standalone tool to synchronize two folders in windows?

    I keep data on a USB drive, but I also keep a copy of all of that data on a hard disk. I like using the hard disk because it's faster and gives me a backup. What standalone tools would work to keep the files on the disk and USB drive in sync? I'd like a single command line executable or standalone GUI app that can do the job--something I could run off of the USB drive. So, things like the MS Sync Tool wouldn't work.
