• Google Analytics - bad experiences? (esp. adult content)

  I work for a rather large adult website, and we're currently not using Google Analytics. There is an internal debate going on about whether we should start using Analytics, but there is hestitation from certain parties. The main argument is that they fear that Google will get too much insight into our website, and might even block us from the index as a result based on our adult content. Has anyone here ever had such an experience, or know stories about bad experiences with Google Analytics in such a manner? I personally think it will only improve our website if we were able to use Analytics, but the dev team was asked to look into possible negative effects. Any help would be appreciated.

• Reasons to disable game save during combat (e.g. Mass Effect 2)

  So I've been playing Mass Effect 2 (PC) and one of the things I've noticed is that you can only save your game when you're not engaged in combat. As soon as the first enemy shows up on your radar, the save button is disabled. Once combat is over, save functionality reappears. It seems reasonable to assume that Mass Effect 2 is a state machine, and therefore, the internal state of the program at any moment can be captured and reloaded later. This is basically a solved problem - games have been designed this way since the Half-Life era. It also seems reasonable to assume that BioWare knew what they were doing when they made the decision not to follow this model - it's a tried and true system; BioWare wouldn't have done it the way they did without some good reason. What reasons are there to disable game save functionality during combat?

• Temenos WealthManager: performance benchmark on Exadata

  Temenos WealthManager is at work in financial institutions of all sizes. No matter the size, each of Temenos’ customers has one requirement in common: a need for fast technology. This led Temenos to conduct a performance benchmark, running its WealthManager platform on Oracle Exadata Database Machine. During the study, Temenos executed high-intensity financial engines two- to three-times faster than its previous internal benchmarks and/or largest customer throughput. The company also demonstrated greater than two-times the average improvement in response times for six-times the number of users and data volumes. • Can't read CDs, can't create USB... how do I install Ubuntu?

  Hello everyone and thank you in advance for your time. I have troubles with the latest Ubuntu distribution: since I upgraded to 12.04 Ubuntu has started having troubles (internal errors, packages that crash repeatedly, I can't install new packages, Ubuntu Software Center crashes, Java apps that worked stopped working and display weird mistakes, files were corrupted... a mess). I ultimately decided to format everything and install 12.04 from scratch. I made a backup and everything, but now I have troubles installing ubuntu 12.04. Specifically, a CD I burned with Brasero that works on another PC is not read by my laptop (not at boot phase, nor inside Ubuntu), and when I try to create a USB with Ubuntu (following the instructions I found on the ubuntu site) Startup Disk Creator stops at 22% saying that "the codes do not match". Any idea on what to do next? No, I can't buy a new PC.

• Getting Started with Component Architecture: DI?

  I just moved away from MVC towards something more component-architecture-like. I have no concept of messages yet (it's rough prototype code), objects just get internal properties and values of other classes for now. That issue aside, it seems like this is turning into an aspect-oriented-programming challenge. I've noticed that all entities with, for example, a position component will have similar properties (get/set X/Y/Z, rotation, velocity). Is it a common practice, and/or good idea, to push these behind an interface and use dependency injection to inject a generic class (eg. PositionComponent) which already has all the boiler-plate code? (I'm sure the answer will affect the model I use for message/passing)

• Didn't you have problems with upgrade from 11.10 to 12.04 (libre office)?

  This is the first time I'm repporting something hoping that it can be usefull for you. When updating from 11.010 to 12.04 (what include updating Libre office I supose), I can't any more work with any document that was originally made in Libre office. Every change freezes the screen, I can't save anything... I'm talking of complex documents, with lots of internal references and footnotes and some propor text styles of about 230 pages (phd work) I wanted to alert you that probabely something is wrong but as I don't have any tecnical knowledge, I don't know what could be usefull to help you in your great job of making good free software. My little desktop has 2Gb of Ram memory and an atom processor (I can look for more details if that would be usefull to you)

• What is the best way to learn C# programming? [closed]

  My case I want to get the capability of doing anything in C# from building applications to solving problems. I searched for and tried to read books. Then one of the experts said that reading books will not make any good and that to learn, you have to solve real world problems in C#, and he gave me some problems which I previously solved in C++. The thing is that while I know the internal logic of solving the problem, I don't know how to implement it using C# efficiently. I know the message to pass but not the exact way to pass it. I did a program to solve a problem, then find out there are much easier ways of doing it wherever I was doing it in tougher way. What I need to get hold of the language and get the ability to code in C# proficiently?

• CSS not loading when site is viewed via Windows VPN

  Internal site has recently been redesigned, but IE8 does not seem to be loading the new css rules only when viewed via VPN. I really have no clue what to look for. I can't reproduce the problem, but it's apparently affecting client for the last month. I've suggested: Reloading IE8 Checking Internet Permissions Flushing the cache I'm not really certain what direction to search for the answer. Is it likely to be a server permissions issue? a VPN connection issue? a rare ie8 CSS bug?

• GUI won't load, but the desktop background loads. Can't access the terminal

  Having trouble with the Ubuntu GUI. I can log in just fine (see this)... everything looks normal there. But as soon as I put in my password, I get this. I tried a few different troubleshooting keyboard commands (ctrl+alt+t, crtl+alt+delete), and only the latter worked. I can interact with that window just fine, except I am unable to resize or move it. The first time I logged in, I got a dialog box that said, "Ubuntu has experienced an internal error. Send error report?" Doesn't say anything now. Yes I tried restarting it. Thanks a bunch, Michael EDIT: Trying to start a guest session leads to the same problem.

  Code refactoring is a "disciplined technique for restructuring an existing body of code, altering its internal structure without changing its external behavior" Could anyone explain this definition? I find it kind of blurry. Which is the best technique to do it? Are these the only ones? Which are the obstacles one would meet when refactoring code? What to take into consideration when switching between IDEs? Do tools which help refactoring exist? If yes, which one would you recommend using? Any references to links where I can find out more on this subject or to books that have been written are welcomed. The questions above are for any programming language, but specific examples are appreciated. Anything that would clarify this for me is.

• USB modem dosn't working in Ubuntu

  In Ubuntu 12.10 USB-modem Huawei 171 from MTS is not connected to the network. First on the message "Are you registered on the network", immediately after that, "You are disconnected from the network." This happened after there was an internal error notification Ubuntu. I did not pay attention, and closed by sending the report. After the reboot does not work. Settings are not changed. I am online with this modem in Windows 8.   Hello, One time I faced an issue where my customer is having an HTTP 500 internal server error while trying to access any SharePoint site. The problem appeared once he moved back and forth with inheriting/breaking inheritance of permissions over different levels in the site collection. "Security corruption in database" sounds very tough for a customer running a production portal with a backup that can make him lose around 3 weeks of valuable data. However, the solution tends not to be that hard, there's an stsadm command that help us detect the corruption and even delete the orphaned items causing the corruption. Follow these steps: a. stsadm -o databaserepair -url http://SITEURL -databasename DBNAME                and it returned some orphaned items.            b. stsadm -o databaserepair -url http://SITEURL -databasename DBNAME -deletecorruption                and it removed the orphaned items. (This talk became the basis for my paper on injecting errors for fun and profit.) In that talk (but not in the paper), I articulated 10 principles of RAS design, which I list for you here: Protect everything Correct where you can Detect where you can't Where protection not feasible (e.g., ALUs), duplicate and compare Report everything; never throw away RAS information Allow non-destructive inspection (logging/scrubbing) Allow non-destructive alteration (injection) (that is, only change the bits you want changed, and leave everything else as is) Allow observation of all the bits as they are (logging) Allow alteration of any particular bit or combination of bits (injection) Document everything Of course, it isn't always feasible to follow these rules completely all the time, but I put them out there as a starting point.

• Are these hacking attempts or something less sinister?

  I just had a look through our web server error logs, and Terminal services is reporting: "Remote session from client name a exceeded the maximum allowed failed logon attempts. The session was forcibly terminated." Hundreds of times, every 10.5 seconds or so for a period of about 5-10 minutes, once at 2pm yesterday and once again at about 1am this morning. We CURRENTLY have RDP open to the outside, as I am just completing the setup and now and then I/Others need to jump on from an outside office/location (VPN isn't an option) As these are so regular, am I right in assuming that they may be the result of some sort of dictionary attack? or could something like an internal admin's hung session cause such a mass of events? (Win Server 2008 R2)

• Collapsible menu and amount of links in a web page

  One of my pages contain three levels of a collapsible menu (JS + CSS from mycssmenu.com). There are a dozen first level items displayed to users, each one with various second level items, and finally a lot of third level items, each one containing a related link. This generates a lot of internal links (300+). Because of SEO should I change the way the collapsible menu is displayed to reduce link amount? What do you suggest? I would like to avoid users to have to open a new page just to only see what are third level items and eventually follow one of its links.

  As an affiliate, how can we get more information on sales? It looks like the goals feature in GA is for those who have control over the receipt page. But we are sending users away using an affiliate link. With event tracking, we've been able to count the clicks and see which links are being clicked the most, but not which ones actually convert. We want to find out the following on each sale: Did the converted user come from search or internal traffic? If it was search, which keyword brought the user to our site (and clicked away and converted)? Is it possible?
