• What advantage to I have if I use 64bit libraries?

  Hi folks, I see many people go crazy about 64bit libraries, and preferring them in general to the 32bit counter parts. I realise there is a lot of talk that gets lost in translation, and that the 64bit can be often over-valued. The setting is libraries that are called on web application, I'm aware that a new instance of the web app is generated for each hit. Therefore I'm thinking that 64bit is not necessary as the instances in no way surpass 2Gb of RAM usage. Help would be much appreciated! :)

• What does the "Max Memory Size" on the new Intel Core i3 / i5 / i7 CPU's mean?

  I just noticed in the specs of the new Intel Core i-series processors that there is a "Max Memory Size" that is usually pretty small -- anywhere from 8GB to 24GB. See here: http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=41316 Core 2-based motherboards were just starting to roll out support for 32GB and greater memory sizes. Anyone have any idea what the Max Memory Size indicates? Is this the total limitation of the on-chip memory controller? Limitation per channel? Limitation per stick (e.g. density??)? Thinking of building a decent machine that needs lots of RAM, so I'm looking at the i7 860.

  Hi,I work for a large fortune 500 company. We have several SQL 2005 Servers running on DELL Poweredge 2950 with 8 GB RAM and 4 CPU's. Storage is DMX RAID 10. We are in the process of migrating to sql 2008. We are planning on consolidating multiple sql 2005 into single SQL 2008 Server.If anyone can suggest hardware I would appreciate. We have looked at DELL R710, I was wondering if there are other servers that are good for running SQL 2008. Thanks

• ubuntu 9.10 screen flickering problem on Thinkpad R31 with Intel 83830 Graphics

  I am trying to revitalize an old Thinkpad R31 that has the Intel 82830 graphics and only 256 MB of RAM. I have tried a Xubuntu 9.10 Live CD. After booting the screen blinks so much that it is practically unreadable. I have searched for updated IBM Thinkpad drivers but I only found drivers for Windows on the Thinkpad support web site. EDIT: I have changed the title and the description. It is not a problem of the drivers. It seems to be a problem with the kernel. See my own answer below.

• Q8300 Core-2 Quad vs X3360 Xeon

  I'm looking at this ABMX server, and trying to decide on the CPU. I'm purchasing 2 servers, to be used as dedicated web and DB servers for a web site that has low traffic now but could ramp up quickly. Just trying to decide if it is worth about $200 more (per server) for the Xeon vs the core-2. Passmark rates them at 3567 and 4153, which didn't seem that different. I'm not planning at this point to need virtualization. I did hear rumors that Xeon stands up better in a 24/7 server environment, but heard others say there wasn't that much difference. Planning to run Windows Server 2008, likely the R2 release, with 8GB RAM.

• Adobe Master Collection CS3 wont run on my Windows 7 64bit

  I have a brand new HP p6230y. My first step after booting it up was to install Master Collection. It installs fine, but when I go to run each of the applications, and they all behave differently. I have re-installed twice already. Photoshop opens, but freezes. Acrobat tells me that I need to reinstall. Nothing else even opens (no freezing, no process in taskman). Any Ideas? • MySQL is killing the server IO.

  I manage a fairly large/busy vBulletin forums (~2-3k requests per second, running on gigenet cloud), the database is ~ 10 GB (~9 milion posts, ~60 queries per second), lately MySQL have been grinding the disk like there's no tomorrow according to iotop and slowing the site. The last idea I can think of is using replication, but I'm not sure how much that would help and worried about database sync. I'm out of ideas, any tips on how to improve the situation would be highly appreciated. Specs : Debian Lenny 64bit ~12Ghz (6 cores) CPU, 7520gb RAM, 160gb disk. • Tunnel only one program (UDP & TCP) through another server

  I have a windows machine at home and a server with debian installed. I want to tunnel the UDP traffic from one (any only this) program on my windows machine through my server. For tcp traffic this was easy using putty as a socks5 proxy and then connecting via ssh to my server - but this does not seem to work for UDP. Then I setup dante as a socks5 proxy but it seems to create a new instance/thread per connection which leads to a huge ram usage for my server, so this was no option either. So most people recommend openvpn, so my question: Can I use openvpn to just tunnel this one program through my server? Is there a way to maybe create a local socks5 proxy on my windows machine and set it as a proxy in my program and only this proxy then will use openvpn? Thank you for your ideas

• Apache hanging with MaxClients is reached

  My Apache 2.2 (preform MPM) is hanging when MaxClients is reached, rather than queueing up requests and serving them when child processes become free. When this happens, the web server is totally unresponsive until it is manually restarted. The server stack is Ubuntu 8, MySQL 5, PHP 5. Hardware is Dual Xeons (2.8) with 2GB of RAM. It serves 30,000 - 50,000 pageviews per day. Static images, CSS, and JS are offloaded to a separate server and PHP is cached using eAccelerator. The HTML output of many pages is cached to the filesystem.   I am migrating from a vps based hosting to a dedicated hosting (8GB RAM/1TB HD). I need to run multiple Drupal and Ruby based applications? what would be the recommended configuration. I was thinking of two options. 1) Install multiple Debian os on top of Xen (like VPS). Each may be 2GB Memory and run Drupal and Ruby and MYSQL on separate partitions . 2) Install one instance of Debian. and Install Drupal (Apache, php) Ruby (lighttpd, ruby) ,MySQL all in the same partition I was little worried that option 2 could lead to some performance issues later..

• Load balanced asp.net websites and required memory usage

  Each of my servers has 8Gb RAM and the memory usage hovers around 7Gb. I have a load balancer available to me but at the moment I'm worried that putting my sites through it will cause the platform to fall over. The load balancer would be configured with a sticky round-robin where a new connection is round robin but subsequent connections for the same source ip will remain on the same server (until a limit is reached). Thats all standard stuff. How do I know what memory usage my sites will need across the platform when I put them through the load balancer? Rather than knowing that a site is using 150mb on a particular server I could face a situation where the 150mb is taken up on each of the servers. I know that with only 1 gb free I could have a serious problem on my hands. If I free up some memory then how can I work out what I need to have free to prevent this from happening? Thanks Matt

• Dell R510 vs R710

  Hello, the Dell R510 and R710 can both hold regular configurations (e.g. X5650, 24 GB RAM, etc.) and these usually come out to about the same price. Is there a particular reason why one would choose the R510 over the R710 or vice versa? There really appears a lack of differentiating factors. The only 'major' factor I found, which doesn't apply to me though, is that the R510 can hold up to 12 3.5in HDDs while the R710 (which is slightly more expensive) can only hold up to 6 3.5in HDDs. Maybe you guys have some input and bought either of these machines (or both) to shed some light on other differences and why someone should choose one over the other as the pricing is pretty much the same with my configuration. • PC reboots automatically in the begining

  I have a AMD Phenom II 3GHz. 2 GB RAM system running on Windows 7. Off late my PC does not start properly I have to start it at least 7-8 times before it starts. It starts and then shuts down. Every time the time for which the system is up increases. After 7-8 attempts it starts an works fine. I have to give it a min between restarts (USB mouse light goes off). If I try restarting before this time the PC does not start. I am suspecting humidity playing some factor as this issue has started creeping up ever since the rains have started.

• Server Configuration / Important Parameter for 500Req/Second

  I am configuring a server to be used as nginx server for a very heavy traffic website. It is expected to receive traffic from a large number of IP addresses simultaneously. It is expected to get 500Req/Second with atleast 20Million unique IPs connecting it. One of the problems I noticed in my previos server was related to iptables / ipconntrack. I am not aware of this behaviour and would be glad to know which all parameters of a ubuntu / debian (32/64) bit machine should I tweek to get maximum performance from the server. I can put in a lot of RAM on the server but mission critical task is the response times. We ideally dont want any connection to be hanging / timing out / waiting and want as low as possible overall response times. P.S. We are also looking for a kick ass freelancer system admin who can help us figuring / setting this all up. Reach me incase you have some spare time and interested in working on some very heavy traffic website servers.

• Windows Resource Monitoring Programs

  I work at a small tech start up managing websites with our own in house server side code. (In production, we use Windows Server 2008 boxes, running Java 6. In our dev boxes, we use Windows 7 running Java 7.) Recently, we had an issue where some of our boxes in production failed, and we didn't have means of trouble shooting, since we keep little to no monitoring logs about a given box's CPU/memory/RAM usage, etc. So, I'm wondering if there is some commercial/freeware that's the standard for performance monitoring/logging. Essentially, I'm just looking for an analytics system that is similar to the Windows Task Manager or the Resource Monitor, that serializes all of its data periodically. Ideally, I'd like to find a program that's also extensible, in case I'd like to add addition monitors in the future.

• OOM-Killer, jboss and kernel panic

  Hi, We are running RedHat 3.4.6(x32) on VMWareEsx3.5(x64) with 6GB RAM. A few java processes(including jboss) are running in the background. The problem is that the java processes consume lots of memory, and sometimes they are killed by the OOM-killer. When OOM-killer is about to act, the free physical memory is very low 100MB-200MB, but the swap is not used (99% free). Sometimes this causes a kernel panic too. So why isn't the swap used? How to investigate this kernel panic? Is using 6GB memory on 32bit Redhat wise? Thanks

  Some days ago I installed an Ubuntu server and two running virtual machines with libvirt. Everything works fine except one performance problem. Everytime when I call a PHP script with directory operations the operations are very slow and not performant.   Windows 32BIT Box (Server OS) 4GB RAM a 800GB LUN Mapped to the above box as a local drive Around 700GB of text files (Yes text files and a few thousand word documents) nested in thousands of directories. I need to move this to a new storage and map another server to it. What would be the best way to go about it ? What I did was mapped the existing LUN to our new box and mapped a LUN from the New storage to the new box too, and tried copying (windows copy) but that wasn't good / fast enough considering the downtime. I am now looking for either a script which will do this or a utility (prefer opensource / free) to move this size of data at a good speed. 2 x 1GB Nics teamed ether channel 2GBPs Any suggestions or pointers would be off great help Thanks !

• Fast user switching is logging users off instead of switching users

  I have a netbook running Windows 8.1 Pro that will no longer allow more than one user to be logged in at the same time. The steps necessary to reproduce this are as follows: The current user presses WIN to bring up the start screen. The user clicks his name in the corner and a list of other users appears. As soon as one of the other names is clicked, the user is unceremoniously logged off without any prompts. This behavior seems to have started some time after upgrading to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8. Before that point, everything worked fine and more than one user could be logged in at the same time. I've tried searching for others experiencing similar problems but this appears to be unique. • Rails3 environment running very slow on Windows XP, Ubuntu 9.04, Ubuntu 9.10

  I've tried all three (granted the Ubuntu versions were via VirtualBox with XP as a host, but I gave the images all the available RAM my system has). Loading the rails environment is taking 30-60 seconds. rails console, rake test:units - anything that requires rails to load up. And not just on the first go - every time. I've even used autotest to see if it helps with execution time for unit tests, but it doesn't. Any time I change one test, it still takes 30 seconds to load them, and then about 4 seconds to execute. Has anyone else come across this issue? Has anyone figured out any way to fix this?

• Out of memory Problem

  I'm running a C++ program in Ubuntu 10.04 (32-bit system architecture). If I calculate the amount of memory that my program uses, it comes up to 800MB. I have a 4GB RAM in place. But still before the program even finishes it throws an out of memory exception. Why is that happening ? Is it because of the structure of the memory or implementation problems or what could possibly trigger this issue ? I've had seen this problem quite a number of times before but never understood the reason behind it. Have any of you handled this case before ?

• High server load - [jbd2/md1-8] using 99.99% IO

  I've been having spike in load over the last week. This usually occurs once or twice a day. I've managed to identify from iotop that [jbd2/md1-8] is using 99.99 % IO. During the high load times there is no high traffic to the server. Server specs are: AMD Opteron 8 core 16 GB RAM 2x2.000 GB 7.200 RPM HDD Software Raid 1 Cloudlinux + Cpanel Mysql is properly tuned Apart from the spikes, the load usually is around 0.80 at most. I've searched around but can't find what [jbd2/md1-8] does exactly. Has anyone had this problem or does anyone know a possible solution? Thank you. • Lack of Virtual Memory - confusion

  Specs ahead of time: AMD Athlon XP 2400+ @ 2.00 GHz / 1 GB PC-3200 DDR RAM / 160 GB IDE HDD / 128 MB GeForce 6200 AGP / FIC AM37 / 350W PSU / Windows XP Pro SP3 So, XP has pop-ups saying that I am low on virtual memory. However, I have a program called SmartRAM (part of Advanced SystemCare by IObit) and it displays CPU & Page File Usage and Free Physical and Virtual Memory. That program shows that I have at least 2000 MB free virtual memory on my machine when the XP pop-ups say that I'm low on virtual memory. First off, would a complete lack of virtual memory cause my computer to freeze? Secondly, how can I solve this lack of virtual memory? (A complete reformat is possible but can't be done immediately...) Thanks in advance.
