• End User Ad-Hoc Reporting Tool: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio or Microsoft Access?

  Our centralized IT department has suggested two primary ad hoc query tools for our general user base of approximately 200 staff members: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 2008 (SSMS) Microsoft Access 2003 Environment The backend database is a read-only Microsoft SQL Server 2005 database. The schema is 400+ tables; allowing access to the raw data for our general staff would be a disaster. We will be building an "abstraction layer" over the raw data for our general staff to run ad hoc queries against. The abstraction layer will most likely contain a number of views. A number of users have basic knowledge in Microsoft Access; none have used SSMS. Which of the above tools (or alternative) would be best for a decidedly non-techie user base of approximately 200 people? What are the pros and cons of each? Also, the IT department has suggested teaching people T-SQL so they may use SSMS. Is this reasonable?

• Where to start on creating finger swipe navigation trough a list.

  Lets say I want to make a control to select any integer number by dragging on a "bar" with numbers: (156 is selected) Mousedown on "159" and dragging towards the left and then doing mouseup changes the control to this: (160 is selected) I've been experimenting for the past 3 hours but I'm inexperienced in Silverlight so I'm having problems getting started. My current guess is I should seperate this into 2 steps: Step 1: Build this control without swiping behavior. Just 2 buttons to go up a number or go down a number Step 2: Replace the buttons by handling mouse events. With my limited knowledge I think I would manage building a crappy control that does this, with very messy xaml and c# and lots of headaches when trying to apply styling and fancy state transitions, but I was hoping some xaml wizards could get me started with the basic approach? • Can I resolve ASP.NET "~" paths without a Control being present?

  I want to Resolve "~/whatever" from inside non-Page contexts such as Global.asax (HttpApplication), HttpModule, HttpHandler, etc. but can only find the Resolution methods specific to Controls (and Page). I think the app should have enough knowledge to be able to map this outside the Page context. No? Or at least it makes sense to me it should be resolvable in other circumstances, wherever the app root is known. Update: The reason being I'm sticking ~ paths in the web.configuration files.

  Hi all, a bit of advice required here :). I recently graduated(Computer Science), and need to decide a path to take programming/technology wise. I have knowledge of Java, C, SQL most of it is university level stuff. I work daily with PHP/SQL building web apps. Which language / technology would you advise me to learn. I am very interested in Database management, GIS etc. Web dev is also very interesting to me. It is all a bit confusing since i would like to learn something that will have a value at least in the near future. I would like to have some ideas on which language/technology is god choice in order to be marketable.

• Missing safe control entry

  I've got a working hello-world like webpart for my SPS3.0 I can compile, pack and deploy it using VS2008, makecab.exe and stsadm. So I know the theory of deploying sharepoint webparts. My problem: After I inserted an additional .webpart file, an elements.xml and a feature.xml to deploy the .webpart file and get knowledge about adding features to my webpart, the deployed webpart is missing its safe control entry in the web.config. But the dll can be found in the gac and my features are also deployed to the right folders. I didn't change anything in my manifest.xml especially not in it's -tag, because it definitely worked before i added my additional feature files. Can anybody help me? Should i provide you some code snippets? Thanks Stefan

• When to alter a function vs when to just write a new one...?

  /is n00b Through the gift of knowledge and expertise encoded here, I am doing my best to avoid n00b mistakes as I learn the basics of programming. I use functions when I (think I) can in PHP, and keep them somewhat sorted in different includes. The n00b problem I'm running into now is situations where perhaps 4/5th of an existing function is relevant to a new need. Maybe there are a slightly different set of inputs, or an additional calculation or two in the series, or output needs a different format/structure... but the core of the function is still applicable. Is there a good rule of thumb regarding when one should bolt-on crap to an original function and when one should (literally) copy & paste most of it into a new function and tweak to fit the situation? On the one hand I feel bad duping code, on the other I feel bad cluttering up an existing function with stuff not always needed...

• Cakephp Localization, Cannot Change language when DEFAULT_LANGUAGE is set

  I am confused :) I'm using the p18n component in cakephp found here: http://www.palivoda.eu/2008/04/i18n-in-cakephp-12-database-content-translation-part-2/ This component requires me to set in core.php the following constant: define("DEFAULT_LANGUAGE", 'eng') However when this is set I cannot change the language using: Configure::write('Config.language', 'eng'); At the moment, into my knowledge, the only way to change the locale of my static content is the use of the Configure::write. But for the dynamic content to change through the use of the p28n component I must have the DEFINE_LANGUAGE constant set to a value. This is all very confusing. Any help will be much appreciated.

• Injecting a response value into a textarea to subsequently post

  I have multiple notes with class=.note and unique id each inside a div. On click of edit I grab the id, show hidden form #noteditor and hide all notes. I am using the load function to get the response (using codeigniter so url does work) and input result in the editorfrorm Textarea id = upnote... Firebug response looks ok and I have tried to inject into a div and this works fine, BUT getting this injto the text area is causing me some headaches. There is also the chance that i am going around this a convoluted way due to my limited knowledge... • Where to learn about HTTP?

  I am fluent in HTML and PHP and slowly learning JavaScript however I have noticed that there is a huge hole in my knowledge when it comes to understanding how web software communications actually work. I understand the flow of information across the net however I would like to learn about HTTP protocols to better understand how the data is actually sent back and forth through the internet to help me understand things like REST, HTTP Headers, AJAX requests, etc. However, I must be searching the wrong terms because I haven't been able to find a good description of HTTP protocols. Any help is appreciated to point me in the right direction. Thanks!

• EF4 - What's all the hype over objectsets?

  I am an intermediate user of EF in .net 3.5 and have recently moved to working with .net 4. One think i keep coming across when reading various tutorials is the use of ObjectSets instead of ObjectQuerys and that they are a great new feature. What is so great about them? Reading this MSDN article titled "Working with ObjectSet (Entity Framework)" It shows two examples for on how to add a Product.. one for 3.5 and another for 4.0. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee473442.aspx Though my lack of knowledge I am possibly bringing up a seperate point here, but i never added a Product like this: //In .NET Framework 3.5 SP1, use the following code: using (AdventureWorksEntities context = new AdventureWorksEntities()) { // Add the new object to the context. context.AddObject("Products", newProduct); } I would have just used context.AddToProducts(newProduct); Please enlighten me. • Fluxbox compiling problems after making a change.

  I'm trying to make the change here: http://fluxbox-wiki.org/index.php?title=Howto_Make_dblclick_titlebar_maximize I am using the current git version of the fluxbox source. I assume that those instructions are perhaps no longer valid for the current git version. In the void FluxboxWindow::setupWindow() function I can see no references to CommandRef or frame. I would like to know if it is possible that I could work out where they should go in that function, with only having a limited knowledge? I am still trying to learn programming and don't know enough just yet to work out where they should go. I assume I can't just paste in the suggested lines anywhere in that function, but why not? I can paste the source if needed, but I am unsure where to paste to.

• Building html tables from query data... faster?

  With my limited experience/knowledge I am using the following structure to generate HTML tables on the fly from MySQL queries: $c = 0; $t = count($results); $table = '<table>'; while ($c < $t) { $table .= "<tr><td>$results[0]</td><td>$results[1]</td> (etc etc) </tr>"; ++$c; } $table .= '</table>'; this works, obviously. But for tables with 300+ rows there is a noticeable delay in pageload while the script builds the table. Currently the maximum results list is only about 1,100 rows, and the wait isn't long, but there's clearly a wait. Are there other methods for outputting an HTML table that are faster than my WHILE loop? (PHP only please...)

  I've been a Web developer for over 5 years and am looking to start building more complex Web apps. Currently, I know HTML/CSS/Javascript but I feel it's time to start learning something else. I work with a lot of applications based on PHP. I created a vBulletin forum on my own time and I would definitely want to build off of that since it has gained a bit of popularity. I also work with Wordpress quite often. All of the software I work with tends to be based on PHP but I hear a lot of people say Ruby or Python is better. Since I'm starting out, I really don't care which one I learn but I want to start right. Any recommendations for someone with HTML/CSS/Javascript knowledge but wants to branch out?

• Is it possible to use Integrated Windows Auth when Server isn't on the domain?

  Our production web servers ARE NOT part of the domain, but we'd like people to be able to log in automatically since they are logged into the domain on their PC. Is there anyway to get the browser (IE7+) to send the appropriate information to the server (IIS6) so I can retrieve the ServerVariables["AUTH_USER"] or ServerVariables["LOGON_USER"]? I presume the answer is no since if I set the security for windows auth to "on" and anonymous access to "off", then the server wouldn't know what do do with any user information for a domain which it has no knowledge of. I just want to know for sure before I give the SSO team a "not possible" answer.

• Filling a screen width

  I'm really struggling to tidy up a web site I am building for someone. I've spent hours on trying to figure this out! I have limited knowledge so the code would be helpful. They want the section at the top (originally two images, now I'm trying background images and css) to fill the width of the browser- no matter what size it is. Does anyone know how to do this? Similarly, is there a setting to get text to fill 100% width of the box, no matter what? I would seriously appreciate even someone helping me move on a step! they want everything to sit tight and inline, in some browsers/screens it does but on mine it spreads out with lots of white space. www.thegees.co.uk is the site.

• Disabling FileSystemWatcher for specific updates?

  Does anyone have any ideas how I can reliably disable a FileSystemWatcher object when my application makes changes to the files in the directory, so that I am only watching for external changes to the directory? I've tried setting EnableRaisingEvents to false immediately before performing a write and setting it back to true immediately after, but it seems this method is not reliable, and occasionally I still get the event firing. The only other thing I can think of is to wait a small amount of time after performing the write to let the OS finish up the modification of the directory before re-enabling the FSW, but that seems hackish and I don't like it. To add to the problem, the directory consists of potentially many files, the identities of which are beyond my knowledge and control, so I can't just wait for the event to fire for a specific file and then ignore it. There could be any number of FSW events firing after a single modification (because of the potentially many files getting updated).

• MacBook for django development?

  Hi, I'm about to buy a new laptop (Asus G62) to replace my old ubuntu desktop. I will use it mostly for django development (and some legacy win32 stuff in a virtualbox). However, since I will need to do some iPhone development in the near future, I'm starting to think that it might be a wiser to buy a MacBook Pro, instead of the Asus and later a cheap (so to speak...) MacBook. How well suited is a MacBook Pro for Django development? I currently use WingIDE on Linux and love it, how does the Mac version compare to the linux one? Is the Ubuntu - Mac OS transition complicated? Will I be able to leverage my Linux knowledge? OTOH, I'm your average nerd, so I'm not sure if I'm cool enough for a Mac. Besides, having a double chin, a black turtle neck is completely out of question. Thanks in advance!

• MVVM View reference to ViewModel

  I'm using MVVM in a WPF app. I'm very new to both. Let me state that I am not a purest in the MVVM pattern, I am trying to use as many best practices as I can but am trying to make what I think are reasonable compromises to make it work in our environment. For example, I am not trying to achieve 0% code in my View codebehind. I have a couple of questions about best practices. 1) I understand I don't want my VM to know about the attached View, but is it reasonable for the View to have a reference to its VM? 2) If a control in a View opens another View (such as a dialog) should I handle this in the View? It seems wrong to handle it in the VM since then the VM has some knowledge of a specific View.

• Dreamweaver creating temp php files instead of working direct from the local test server files

  Trying to get MAMP running with Dreamweaver. When I preview a php file inside Dreamweavers 'Live View' mode instead of working direct from my file: http://localhost/php_test/timetest.php it creates its own temp file which looks like: http:// 127.0.0.1/php_test/ TMPWY5ZEM.php (I've added the additional spaces as stockoverflow assumed I was spamming) I know the localhost runs correctly as if I type the URL directly into a browser it runs fine. I've set up the Dreamweaver site correctly to the best of my knowledge, the details are below: Local site folder: /Applications/MAMP/htdocs/php_test Server Folder: /Applications/MAMP/htdocs/php_test Web URL: http://localhost/php_test/ Testing Server: PHP MySQL Any help?

The problem is that despite their poor knowledge and skills, they are sure of their abilities, to the point where I find it hard to teach them "better ways". What's the best way to tackle this?   I was recently on The Daily WTF when I came across this old post. In it the author mentions that one of the programmers changed this code: int main (int argc, char **argv) { int x; char data_string[15]; ... x = 2; strcpy(data_string,"data data data"); ... } To this code: int main (int argc, char **argv) { int x = 2; char data_string[15] = "data data data"; ... } The author goes on to mention: [the coder] changed every single variable to be initiated on the stack For the life of me I cannot see how this change could be harmful, and I am worried that it is a lapse in my C knowledge. What is the WTF?
