• Should we use Visual Studio 2010 for all SQL Server Database Development?

  Our company currently has seven dedicated SQL Server 2008 servers each running an average of 10 databases. All databases have many stored procedures and UDFs that commonly reference other databases both on the same server and also across linked servers. We currently use SSMS for all database related administration and development but we have recently purchased Visual Studio 2010 primarily for ongoing C# WinForms and ASP.NET development. I have used VS2010 to perform schema comparisons when rolling out changes from a development server into production and I'm finding it great for this task. We would like to consider using VS2010 for all database development going forward but as far as I understand, we would have to set up ALL databases as projects because of the dependencies on linked servers etc. My question is, do you have any experience using VS2010 for database development in a similar environment? Is it easy to use in tandem with SSMS or is it a one way street once VS2010 projects have been set up for all databases? Can you make any recommendations/impart any experience with a similar scenario? Thanks, Luke

  I am trying to combine multiple audit tables, and then filter the results into an excel sheet. The Union All and parameters make the query in excess of 1200 characters. It appears the string is truncated when running this. What recommendations can anyone make. I have no control over the database structure and am only reading foxpro free tables.   Hi all, I am trying to grasp the link between OPC and DCOM. I have watched all four of the tutorials here and I think I have a good feeling for what OPC is, but in one of the tutorials (the third one 35 seconds in) the narrator states that OPC is based on DCOM, but I do not understand how the two are really linked. My confusion comes from a question my professor posed in which he asked "How and where would you deploy OPC instead of DCOM and vice-versa." His question makes it seem like the two are not as linked as my research suggests. I'm not looking for anyone to answer the question, I just want to know the relation between OPC and DCOM, then I can figure the rest out. Specifically I would like to know if: 1.) One is always based on the other 2.) One can always be deployed without the other.

  I am starting with c++ and need to know, what should be the approach to copy one hashtable to another hashtable in C++? We can easily do this in java using: HashMap copyOfOriginal=new HashMap(original); But what about C++? How should I go about it? UPDATE Well, I am doing it at a very basic level,perhaps the java example was a wrong one to give. This is what I am trying to implement using C++: I have this hash array and each element of the array point to the head of a linked list. Which has it's individual nodes (data and next pointer). And now, I need to copy the complete hash array and the linked list each node is pointing to.

For instance i have the tables: Books -with Primary Key:Product_ID Client -with Primary key: Client_ID Clients_Books -with Compound Primary Key:Product_Id and Client_ID I want to set this compound Primary key from Clients_Books as a Primary Key to another table named: Order_Details. I have created the database exampledb, and create some tables and load them with values. But when I execute USE exampledb; FLUSH TABLES WITH READ LOCK; SHOW MASTER STATUS; I do not get any output, it says 0 rows affected. why is it so?

• Linux, static lib referring to other static lib within an executable

  Hello, I am creating an application, which consists of two static libs and an executable. Let's call the two static libs: libusefulclass.a libcore.a And the application: myapp libcore instantiates and uses the class defined in libusefulclass (let's call it UsefulClass) Now, if I link the application in the following way: g++ -m64 -Wl,-rpath,/usr/local/Trolltech/Qt-4.5.4/lib -o myapp src1.o src2.o srcN.o -lusefulclass -lcore The linker complains about the methods in libusefulclass not being found: undefined reference to `UsefulClass::foo()' etc. I found a workaround for this: If UsefulClass is also instantiated within the source files of the executable itself, the application is linked without any problems. My question is: is there a more clean way to make libcore refer to methods defined in libusefulclass, or static libs just cannot be linked against eachother? TIA P.S.: In case that matters: the application is being developed in C++ using Qt, but I feel this is not a Qt problem, but a library problem in general.

• Can the opensocial API remotely search for users in orkut etc.?

  Does anyone know if (and how) I can build an application (Java/Ruby/whatever) doing REST or RPC calls to a social network like Orkut (using opensocial) to search for a user by name or email address? So far I know that I can list all friends for a particular user ID, but I want to search among all users. Would I need to code it as an app/gadget running inside the google sandbox or is there a way to get a list of matching user ID via REST? So far I got this one to work: http://code.google.com/p/opensocial-ruby-client/wiki/GettingStarted. But with this API and the gadget linked there I only get people that are already linked to me...   I have three database tables: users emails invitations Emails are linked to users by a user_id field. Invitations are also linked to users by a user_id field Emails can be created without an invitation, but every invitation must have an email. I would like to link the emails and invitations tables so it is possible to find the email for a particular invitation. However this creates a circular reference, both an invitation and an email record hold the id for the same user. Is this bad design and if so, how could I improve it? My feeling is that with use of foreign keys and good business logic, it is fine.

  hi! I've two tables to join with a column(say emp_id)..if emp_id in both the tables have null values, how'll MS SQL server and Oracle treat??? Coz, i read that informatica will neglect the NULL rows when joining..if i handle the null, by substituting -1, a cross-join will happen which i don't want.. what can i do here? I cannot completely neglect the rows which has NULL. Thanks

  Hello, I am looking for a method to implement lock-free queue data structure that supports single producer, and multiple consumers. I have looked at the classic method by Maged Michael and Michael Scott (1996) but their version uses linked lists. I would like an implementation that makes use of bounded circular buffer. Something that uses atomic variables? On a side note, I am not sure why these classic methods are designed for linked lists that require a lot of dynamic memory management. In a multi-threaded program, all memory management routines are serialized. Aren't we defeating the benefits of lock-free methods by using them in conjunction with dynamic data structures? I am trying to code this in C/C++ using pthread library on a Intel 64-bit architecture. Thank you, Shirish

  I am trying to write something in c++ with an architecture like: App -- Core (.so) <-- Plugins (.so's) for linux, mac and windows. The Core is implicitly linked to App and Plugins are explicitly linked with dlopen/LoadLibrary to App. The problem I have: static variables in Core are duplicated at run-time -- Plugins and App have different copys of them. at least on mac, when a Plugin returns a pointer to App, dynamic casting that pointer in App always result in NULL. Can anyone give me some explanations and instructions for different platforms please? I know this may seem lazy to ask them all here but I really cannot find a systematic answer to this question.

When discussing new solutions and architectures we often encounter impedance in trying to compare the various technologies, frameworks, APIs etc. in use between the two camps. It seems that each camp knows little about the other and we end up comparing apples to oranges and forgetting about the bushels. While researching the topic I found this: Java -- .Net rough equivalents It's a nice list but it's not quite exhaustive and is missing the key .NET 3.0 technologies and a few other tidbits. To complete that list: what are the near/rough equivalents (or a combination of technologies) in Java to the following in .NET? • Licencing: release the same software with double licence

  In my free time, I develop (alone, sigh) a project, in particoular an application library. I've released it using GPL v3. At this time, this project has come very useful for a job. I'd like to release my OSS library toghether with the application using the same GPL v3 licence, with the exception that it can be linked for the specific application, or for the specific application vendor. AFAIK, the copyright owner can handle the entire source and licencing it, I did it; and probably the licence owner could cut&paste its own code, change its licence and use for other projects, isn't? But an GPL'ed library cannot be linked with a proprietary software, right? But software could be double-licenced, as MySQL does. So the question is: what should I do to allow the distribution of my GPL'ed library with a proprietary software, being the copyright owner?
