    - by Dave Campbell
In this Issue: Zoltan Arvai, Emiel Jongerius, Charles Petzold, Adam Kinney, Deepesh Mohnani, Timmy Kokke, and Damon Payne. Shoutouts: Andy Beaulieu reported his Coding4Fun: Shuffleboard Game for WP7 has been posted -- Big ol' Tutorial and 6 videos of WP7 goodness Karl Shifflett announced Three New WPF and Silverlight Designer Videos Posted Charles Petzold has a cool Flip-Number Clock in Silverlight posted... cool demo, and the source. From SilverlightCream.com: Data Driven Applications with MVVM Part II: Messaging, Unit Testing, and Live Data Sources Zoltan Arvai has part 2 of his Data-Driven Apps with MVVM up, and this one is also including Messaging, Unit Testing, and Live WCF Data... good tutorial and all the code. Silverlight DataContext Changed Event and Trigger Emiel Jongerius takes a hard swing at the lack of DataContextChanged... his solution involves two attached properties instead of one... check it out and see what you think! Orientation Strategies for Windows Phone 7 Charles Petzold is discussing WP7 Orientation... showing the problems you can get involved in, and how to work through them... and you might be surprised at how he does it :) ... pretty cool as usual, Charles! Debugging the TranslateZoomRotate WPF Behavior in Blend Adam Kinney talks through a bug reported about the WPF TranslateZoomRotate Behavior. Again, it's WPF, but it's in Blend, and ya never know when the solution might apply. I want my app to look like the Zune client Deepesh Mohnani demonstrates using the Cosmopolitan theme to get his app to have the same look as the Zune client. MVVM Project and Item Templates Timmy Kokke is continuing with his cool SilverAmp media player, using it to expand upon the new Blend and Silverlight 4 features. This episode touches very lightly on cranking up a new MVVM project in Blend. Great Features for MVVM Friendly Objects Part 0: Favor Composition Over Inheritance Damon Payne has the first part up of a series he's working on with 'MVVM Friendly' features... he's building out a lot of the infrastructure in this post for the ones that follow... all good stuff. • Black GUI with minimal desktop icons appeared after powering on my desktop PC

    - by Christopher Chipps
My computer powered on fine but after POST, a dialog box appeared with a red "X" and it gave some sort of warning. It had a long file name, I cannot recollect the entirety of it but it was something like C:/system32/desktop....After clicking ok, the GUI was totally black with only the Recycle Bin icon in the Desktop, and the Taskbar was there as well. I restarted it, and the GUI was back to normal with the icons and wallpaper in their proper place. I'm sure if I knew more of that file name in the dialog box, that would be helpful to those reading this but should I be concerned that this happened?

  • Friday Fun: Christmas Tree Light Up

    - by Asian Angel
Another week has thankfully passed by, so it is time to take a break and have some fun. This week’s game tests your ability to light up the whole Christmas tree…can you figure out the correct wiring configuration? Christmas Tree Light Up The object of the game is simple…light up all of the bulbs on the Christmas tree. While the game may look quick and easy at first you will need to do some thinking and experimenting to come up with the correct wiring configuration. The instructions are very simple…just click on any of the wiring sections or bulbs to rotate them. Keep in mind that you may have to click a few times to line the wiring sections or bulbs up as desired since the rotation is always clockwise. Note: You will need use all of the wiring sections available to completely light the tree up. Each time you will be presented with a different starting setup coming from your power source. Time to hook up the lights! Note: It is recommended that you disable the sound for the game since the “rotation” sounds can be slightly irritating. A nice start but there are still a lot of bulbs to light up. Getting closer… Almost there…only two more bulbs to light up. Success! Have fun playing! • Use Your Chart-Drawing Skills to Win a Free Chrome Cr-48 Notebook

    - by ETC
Today Google announced that they are partnering with a number of Chrome web application developers to distribute a number of their Chrome OS Notebooks to lucky fans. That’s when we noticed something interesting that can greatly increase your odds of getting one. Unlike Box, MOG, and Zoho, who are doing random giveaways, the LucidChart giveaway is based on a contest of skill – they are picking the best drawings using their flowchart tool and giving away Chrome Notebooks to the winners. So all you have to do is create one of the most interesting drawings / charts, and you will get your hands on one. We’ve also confirmed this with the fine people at LucidChart, who told us “any user who spends a bit of time and effort to do something creative has a good shot at winning one.” How great is the Chrome Cr-48 Notebook? What’s it all about? We wouldn’t know, since Google hasn’t given us here at How-To Geek an opportunity to use one, despite our attempts. It’s sad, since we’re huge fans of the Chrome browser, that we can’t share our Chrome notebook experiences with hundreds of thousands of daily subscribers and millions of monthly visitors. Hint. However, it doesn't boot, since I think I still need to set up grub for this new installation. How do I set up grub2 for a copied Ubuntu installation? All the tutorials for grub2 didn't really help me... running update-grub on the "original" Ubuntu installation doesn't find the copied Ubuntu installation.

  • Migrating an LDOM from a T4 to a T5

    - by Owen Allen
I got a question about LDoms: "Is there any restriction against migrating LDoms between the T4 and T5 platforms?" The only restriction is that, at present, you can't do a live migration. However, with Ops Center 12.1.4, you can put T4 and T5s together in a Server Pool and either manually migrate the LDoms to a new host or configure them for automated cold-migration failover. Take a look at the Server Pool and Oracle VM Server for SPARC chapters for more information.

  • Turn a Green Laser into a Microscope Projector [Science]

    - by ETC
No need to settle for squinting over a microscope, hack a green laser and a cheap webcam lens into a projector. Check out the video below to see the projector in action. Over at Hackteria, user Dusjagr shares a clever tutorial on how to hack a laser and some odd parts into a projector intended for microscopic subjects. With a strong enough light source, a properly spaced lens assembly, and a slide or petri dish filled with something of interest, you can create microscope projector. Curious how it would work and what the results would look like? Check out this demonstration video: That wiggling creature you see in the video is a nematode from a sample of pond water. • Fast Society Creates Mini and Mobile Temporary Social Networks

    - by ETC
You’re out on the town or at a convention with a bunch of friends. How do you keep in touch with the entire group simultaneously? Fast Society offers a smartphone-based solution: a temporary social network for group talking, texting, and more. Fast Society was originally an iPhone only application and has recently updated to include and Android app too. The premise is simple: You set up a Fast Society group, link your friends into it, and for that night (or convention weekend) you’re all part of the same mini group. You can text the entire group, share pictures, set up sub-groups (let’s say that half your group is going to stay up late and party while half need to hit the rack to get up early for presentations, you can create a new group for the night owls to communicate), share your location, and send in-app and SMS messages to the entire group. Check out the video above to see it in action or hit up the link below to read more and grab a copy.
