• Ubuntu Server Edition (Jaunty) x64 Segmentation faults in PHP mysql package

  I've been running Jaunty with Apache2, PHP & MySQL running drupal websites as well as python 2.6 and trac on the same server. I'm getting quite a few segmentation faults and suhosin warnings on my drupal websites which don't seem to be related to the amount of RAM the server has (3GB) as the trac site is running happily without issues. The issue seems to be related to PHP accessing mysql and I'm getting suhosin warnings. Has anyone else seen this problem? Any ideas on how to fix it? Funnily enough, it's not a consistent error, as restarts tend to fix the issue temporarily.

  I m really confused. I was trying to buy hosting at amazon ec2. My site will not be having much of a traffic and i will be installing glassfish and mysql. Usage will be 1gb of ram and around less than 5gb of hardisk and same bandwidth. As mine is a startup, the number of hits per day would be less than 20hits per day, each hit having around 10mins time. How should i calculate the price on the ec2 calculator. Thanks

• How to control admission policy in vmware HA?

  Simple question, I have 3 hosts running 4.1 Essentials Plus with vmware HA. I tried to create several virtual machines that filled 90% of each server's memory capacity. I know that vmware has really sophisticated memory management within virtual machines, but I do not understand how the vCenter can allow me even to power on the virtual machines that exceed the critical memory level, when the host failover can be still handled. Is it due to the fact that virtual machines does not use the memory, so that it is still considered as free, so virtual machines can be powered on ? But what would happen if all VMs would be really using the RAM before the host failure - they could not be migrated to other hosts after the failure. The default behaviour in XenServer is that, it automatically calculates the maximum memory level that can be used within the cluster so that the host failure is still protected. Vmware does the same thing ? The admission policy is enabled. Vmware HA enabled.

  I'm running ubuntu on my work notebook. While it's not a netbook, it is a relatively weak machine. So, even though I'm not a big fan of the ubuntu netbook interface, I would be willing to use it if it's lighter (on RAM and CPU) than the desktop version. I know there are some very light linux distros available out there, but I'd like to stick with ubuntu both for it's community and for the support I have available here at my workplace. So, is Ubuntu Netbook Remix lighter on system resources than Ubuntu Desktop?

• Windows Server Configuration with Exchange, SQL Express and IIS

  In our small office we are currently running a standalone tower server with WS 2008 R2, SQL Express and IIS. This server is going to be decommissioned and scrapped as its old and very noisy. We are going to purchase a new server with WS 2012 Standard and a heap of ram. It will still be a standalone server so it will be a domain controller, have SQL Express and IIS installed. We intend to install the hyper-v role and host a second virtual server to distribute the load. We are a small company and have only 15 staff members so its not a huge load on the server. Can a single server handle this type of installation, we don't want to purchase two servers. If so how should it be configured with regard to which software packages should be virtualized(if any). Redundancy is not a huge issue for us.

• mysql settings - using the available resources

  I've got a lot of processing work I need to run on a mysql server. I've installed mysql 5.1.45-community on a Win 2007 64bit. Its running on a xenon, 3ghz 6 processors with 8 gig ram. It doesn't seem to matter what queries I run (or the number I run at the same time), when I look in task manager, I'll see one processor is out at 100%. The other 5 are idol. Memory is static at 1.54 gig. When I installed mysql, I used the wizard and selected the default "server" (not workstation) option. I feel like I should be getting more bang for my buck. Is there something else I should be monitoring or something I should change to use the other system resources???

  Bear withe me, here is my set up. I use my 27" iMac 3.06GHz Core 2 Duo 4GB Ram to connect to my work desktop running Windows 7. From there I can administer other remote servers. Here is the problem. Using the Remote Desktop Client on my Mac I can connect to my work machine no problem. But when I then use the work machine to open a remote desktop session with another Windows server (usually SBS 2003 but applies to all) I get the log in prompt, I enter the user name password ensure i'm connecting to the domain, but it wont log me in. The error message is the same, as though I had typed the wrong password (i know this is not the case). Does anyone have a solution? Thanks in advance. Gary

  Why has the appearence of NoScript changed? Using Noscript in FireFox (Microsoft Windows): Until now there has been an icon (the S icon) in the lower right of the screen. But now there is an button instead with the text "Options". Left clicking this button seems to bring up the menu as right clicking the old icon. Can I restore the previous state? Is there an auto-update function in NoScript and if so could it have caused the change? If it exists can the auto-update function be disabled? Platform: FireFox 3.0.6, NoScript 1.9.0.6, Windows XP 64 bit, 8 GB RAM.

• Intermittent freeze of Windows 7 x64 on laptop

  I have Lenovo W500, 8GB RAM, 250GB Crucial SSD running Windows 7 x64 using boot-to-vhd. Lately I started to experience some random freezes for 5-30 seconds. And when I say "freeze" I mean it; it's like a time machine - no input taken, nothing is written anywhere, no log, no disk activity. And then suddenly machine would wake up and continue as if nothing happened. I do suspect that it's one of the drivers but I don't see any updates in the log lately except for .NET 4 framework and Adobe Reader. Out of new or updated software I can only recall Skype and IE9 but freezes started to occur definitely before IE install. Regular software includes but not limited to: Office 2010, VMWare Workstation, IE9, Chrome, Skype, Seesmic/TweeterDeck, Live Writer. How should I approach the "hunting season" to find our the culprit? Any tools or packages that could help me to identify the component, program, driver that causes the freeze? Cheers

• How can I exceed the 60% Memory Limit of IIS7

  Pardon if this is more stackoverflow vs. serverfault. It seems to be on the border. We have an application that caches a large amount of product data for an e-commerce application using ASP.NET caching. This is a dictionary object with 65K elements, and our calculations put the object's size at ~10GB. Problem: The amount of memory the object consumes seems to be far in excess of our 10GB calculation. BIGGEST CONCERN: We can't seem to use over 60% of the 32GB in the server. What we've tried so far: In machine.config/system.web (sf doesn't allow the tags, pardon the formatting): processModel autoConfig="true" memoryLimit="80" In web.config/system.web/caching/cache (sf doesn't allow the tags, pardon the formatting): privateBytesLimit = "20000000000" (and 0, the default of course) percentagePhysicalMemoryUsedLimit = "90" Environment: Windows 2008R2 x64 32GB RAM IIS7 Nothing seems to allow us to exceed the 60% value. • Windows 7 Slowness following Virtual PC and Visual Studio Install

  I'm running Windows 7 32bit on a 3.2ghz Pentium D with 2gb RAM and a 1TB SATA hard drive. My system was running as fast as it ever has until I installed Visual Studio and Virtual PC a few days ago. Ever since - regardless of whether either application has been running the system has been running incredibly slowly. For example flash video plays jumpily, 3D games that used to run fine are now unplayable and even the smallest amount of multitasking makes the system unusable. I'm confident there is no virus or other such things present following scans in safemode and I'm fairly confident I've made no other changes to my system. Any ideas - I've run out of things to try!

  I am trying install Linux on my computer (tried Ubuntu 10.4 and Linux Mint 9). I started the installation wizard and on the hard disk selection page the hard disk is not displayed. I have a 500GB disk with 5 partitions and windows 7 ultimate in one partition. If I click the forward button, it shows an error- "No root file system defined". I have tried to install by booting from CD and pendrive but both shows the same error. When I load Linux as live CD it doesn't show the hard disk. My hard disk works fine in windows 7. System config: intel i3 2100, 500GB hdd, 2GB ram

• How to tell if PAE is hurting me?

  I have a couple of servers with 20-30 GB RAM that are running (a variant of) RHEL4. They are currently running the SMP i386 kernel, not x64, not even the hugemem kernel. This means LowMem is confined to < 1G, and thus dentry_cache and ext3_inode_cache to 100M or so each. How can I tell if this is a problem? • Wake network adapter from deep sleep mode

  I recently buyed a new Mainboard (Asrock ALiveXFire) and got some trouble with the network adapter. After switching my Windows 7 x64 in energey saving mode and returning from it, my network adapter couldn't be found. After some googling I found out, that apparently my network adapter has been put in a deep sleep mode and didn't reactivate. Their solution was to switch the PC off, take out the RAM and the CMOS battery for some time. After that, the adapter should be powered on again, but that didn't happen for me. I waited several hours before turning my PC on again, but that didn't help. Formatting and reinstalling didn't help either. The network adapter is not found in the hardware manager and reinstalling the drivers didn't help. I have the newest BIOS installed on the mainboard. I literally don't know what to try next. I'm thinking of returning my board, but I would like to avoid the hassle.

• KVM CLI install for CentOS 6.3 defaults to Minimal Install

  So I now I've installed KVM (and its associated tools and packages- libvirt, VMM etc.). On the GUI (i.e using the VMM), installation works as its supposed to. However, when I try to create a VM using the command line interface, the OS (I am working with CentOS 6.3) defaults to a Minimal Install instead of giving me options to choose from at the time of installation. I am trying to install using the following command: virt-install \ --connect qemu:///system \ --virt-type kvm --name testVM2 \ --ram 512 --disk path=/var/lib/libvirt/images/testVM2.img,size=8 --vnc \ --cdrom /media/db18de8e-0853-49fb-80de-5c794d58a46f/CentOS-6.3- x86_64-bin-DVD1.iso \ --network network=default Specifying the OS-type or the OS-variant parameters doesn't make a difference. Is there something that I am missing out on or some other parameter that I must specify? Thanks in advance.

• fedora 11 server won't boot from SATA disk, won't boot from CD, BIOS configuration problems

  Hi all, Yesterday our fc11 file/print server didn't boot, and had stopped on the BIOS page with a configuration problem. (with a distinct lack of foresight) I reset the BIOS settings to default without recording the message and booted the server. The server ran until it was to be booted this morning, and it was failing to mount the root partition from the SATA disk. It also failed to boot from a known good diagnostics CD. After a few more tries, it now fails part way through the Phoenix - AwardBIOS screen where it is listing the SATA/IDE devices, and it is showing garbage for the identity of one of the disks, which should actually be "none" It looks like the motherboard has gone kaput. The motherboard is an EVGA NF790i, are there any diagnostic tools that I can use to determine this? (as I would prefer to not send the motherboard back, only to discover that it is the RAM or the CPU) ps I can't get it to boot from the memTest disk, so I can't run that diagnostic. Thanks!

• Configure TV Capture card to not use external audio jack for TV audio output

  I had this working with MythTV on Ubuntu 9.1. Then a power surge killed the motherboard. After replacing the motherboard, ram and cpu, the card does not produce any audio except through the output jack on the back of the card. I do not want to use a cable to go from the back of the card to the audio in on the built in sound card of the new mother board. FYI, the old motherboard did not have an on-board sound card. There was a separate audio card installed. There's some configuration that has to be done to have it work the same way again. I just have no idea where to start. • IRC Server For 50 People?

  I've seen this question before and I am sure it will be fine but I want assurance before I do it. I am looking at running an IRC server with 128MB of ram and 500GB of BW. The server will usually handle at least 15 people throughout the whole day but there will be times where there can be at least 50 people in it maybe even more. I might also have a few extra channels on there so probably like at least 5 channels and the same people on the one channel will be in the other channels. Also I am trying to decide on the software to use.   I'd like a read only file system that runs almost entirely in RAM but the compact flash or hardrive can be mounted and made writeable to make persistent changes. How do I do this on Linux? I've looked at several tutorials but none really explain how to create such a system with the option of being able to mount the storage device and make persistent changes. • Satellite TV on my PC?

  What would be a good solution for hooking up the satellite TV box (Dish network) in my room to be able to watch it on my PC and possibly record video from it? Please share with me the best cards, cables, software, anything else needed to do this in the most efficient way? I am looking at the WinTV-HVR from Hauppauge. I am not sure, for performance, what would be the best to go with, PCI, PCI express, USB2.0? Also on the Hauppauge website I saw this note: "WinTV-PVR products will not work in PC systems with 4GB or more of memory." The new PC I am building will be 12-24gb of DDR3 RAM, does that mean their products will not work at all with my memory? So confused now!
