• Why my VPN doesn't work anymore?

  I have openvpn server running on debian lenny. There is only one client - and it is running Windows 7 64-bit. This has worked for few months without any problems. And now, let's say for the last 7 days, it doesn't work at all. I connect successfully from client to the server, but I can't access anything through VPN. I have set it up so that all internet traffic is routed through VPN, and now when I connect with the client, the client can't do anything on the net (open any webpage, ping google, anything ...). Can you help me to figure out what's wrong ? I don't know where to start. I've also tried to connect to another openvpn server (I've installed and configured openvpn on another server, and when I try to connect to it result is the same). So I think there's something wrong with client ... • How do I get rid of phantom bookmarks in Google Chrome on Mac OS X 10.6?

  I'm running Chrome 5.0.375.38 on OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and although I'm positive that when I installed it I told it NOT to import my Firefox bookmarks, it nevertheless still accessed my OLD Firefox bookmarks (including some that I deleted) when I used the location bar. HOWEVER, when I opened the bookmarks manager, it said that I have no bookmarks whatsoever. Seeking to solve this problem, I installed XMarks on both FF and Chrome, and forced Chrome to download the server bookmarks. Now Chrome lists all my current FF bookmarks, but STILL sees the old, phantom bookmarks from when I first installed Chrome in the location bar, even though when I search for these same bookmarks in the bookmarks manager they don't show up. Aargh! Any ideas? Even if there's some way to force-kill-wipeout-clean-erase ALL my Chrome bookmarks that's fine as long as it kills the phantom ones b/c I can still overwrite with XMarks. Thanks!

• How to remap media keys on laptop,without external programs?

  As on most laptops, my laptop has "special" keys, or media keys, as they are sometimes called. On Linux, I can easily read keycodes with things like xev, put other functions back to it. Either with xmodmap or by simply giving the keys functions in my window manager. How is that possible on Windows? Is there even a way to scan those keys and remap them? Possibly even give them different functions as on Linux? If so, where do I do that? I heard of several programs atempting on changing that, but I don't see why I should install another program. I see it as integral part of the OS. For instance, I have a key with an 'i' in a circle. It normally opens a new browser window. When Chrome is already open, it makes the current tab go to my selected homepage (which is about:blank). I'd like to change the functionality of it.

• Development Server Blocked Only from Home

  Recently I've been having an issue with my CentOS 6 test server running Apache and Webmin running on port 10000 where when I try accessing any part of the server - SSH/FTP and even my domains (I have two - both keep getting timeout errors) when I try accessing from any computer on my home network. However when I access via tethering or via my office networks everything loads fine. While the firewall is the first issue at mind, my router never was set to block any special ports, and even after adding port 10000 as a specific exception I'm having no luck. Also, I doubt this is an IP blacklisting issue because I have websites on other servers using CloudFlare for security and I haven't gotten any warnings. Any assistance is greatly apprecaiated. UPDATE: Just some extra details about the issue: My ISP to my knowledge only blocks off ports 25 and 80 for residential users to prevent them from running web servers - however this issue has only come up a day or two ago, before that I was using the server successfully for months. Also the server is not physically located in any of my workspaces - it's a VPS housed in a datacenter

I'm looking for a solution for my Mac and Linux computers that I've seen with most Windows printer drivers: Check "Manual duplex" in the printer screen Printer starts printing one side A dialog appears, asking me to flip the pages Printer prints the other side. One thing I can do, is print odd pages, then reopen the dialog and print even pages, but this is very inconvenient, especially when I only want to print a certain page range of the document as the Mac dialog forgets my previous page range every time. It gets even more inconvenient, when printing 2-up double sided, or when changing additional settings for this one printout. Is there maybe some tool, that can do this? Or maybe a "virtual printer driver" that can sit somewhere between the dialog and the actual printer driver, which manages these steps? (The Windows tool http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FinePrint can do something like that, but I don't need all of its features - and I need it on Mac/Linux) Thanks, Chris

• Windows 8 Radeon update broke some games

  I've been using Windows 8 Consumer Preview 32-bit on my desktop for months, and recently did a software update through Windows Update. An update for my Radeon HD 5450 driver (Catalyst) to WDDM 1.2 was in the list of updates, and installed. When I went to play CS:GO and discovered that when loaded, it would not display the GUI (menus, sometimes even the background) after a few seconds of flickering GUI. I can still navigate the menus 'by feel' and connect to and play on servers, but have no GUI, no buy menu, no map, no cross-hairs, no health indicator, etc. I have tried CS:S, which works, and Borderlands, which doesn't even load the intro videos before the first menu screen. I've tried re-installing Catalyst from the AMD website, and the beta, and tried uninstalling and reinstalling CS:GO. The problem with it (and Borderlands) still happen. What broke, and how can I fix it? I'll be reinstalling soon anyway to dump Windows 8 back to 7, but would like to be able to game until then.

• Disabling the Driver Region on a Mac

  So, this is the first time I try to watch a DVD disc on my (new) Mac and I wonder if I can keep it as fresh-new by not choosing any region and just play discs from anywhere. I understand the media industry made that lock for copyright and whatever, but do I absolutely have to choose a region to be able to play disks, even if I got original ones from different places? Why can I "change region" just 5 times, why even allowing changing? Also, on a side-note, I wonder how to disable the regular DVD Player.

• Formatted a Bootcamped drive as a dynamic disk, now can't boot to either Mac or Windows

  I was trying to create an extra partition to get a file from the Windows side of my Macbook Air to the Mac side, and I accidentally made the disk dynamic without realizing it. I am now unable to boot to the Mac side (holding Alt to go into the system manager at startup doesn't even list the Mac partition), and the Windows side blue screens during boot (goes so quickly that it doesn't even get to the error code before restarting). What can I do to fix the issue? I don't know how to make a bootable flash drive that a Mac will recognize, and Disk Utility (via Internet Recovery) couldn't do anything. • Advantages of multiple SQL Server files with a single RAID array

  Originally posted on stack overflow, but re-worded. Imagine the scenario : For a database I have RAID arrays R: (MDF) T: (transaction log) and of course shared transparent usage of X: (tempDB). I've been reading around and get the impression that if you are using RAID then adding multiple SQL Server NDF files sitting on R: within a filegroup won't yeild any more improvements. Of course, adding another raid array S: and putting an NDF file on that would. However, being a reasonably savvy software person, it's not unthinkable to hypothesise that, even for smaller MDFs sitting on one RAID array that SQL Server will perform growth and locking operations (for writes) on the MDF, so adding NDFs to the filegroup even if they sat on R: would distribute the locking operations and growth operations allowing more throughput? Or does the time taken to reconstruct the data from distributed filegroups outweigh the benefits of reduced locking? I'm also aware that the behaviour and benefits may be different for tables/indeces/log. Is there a good site that distinguishes the benefits of multiple files when RAID is already in place?

• Acer Aspire 3680 Wireless Signal Problem

  I am using Acer Aspire 3680. I recently reinstalled Windows Vista, and the wireless did not work by default. I installed the "Atheros Wireless LAN Driver" on this site: http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/as_3680.html The result, the wireless APs are successfully scanned. However, when I tried to join a network, even with 5/5 signal, an error message showed up diagnosing signal too little. I restarted as Ubuntu, and wireless worked perfectly, with same computer position. Even more confusing, When I moved to the kitchen (2 meters close to the router), the wireless connected, when I move back to my room, wireless failed on Vista and worked on Ubuntu. It is clearly the driver problem. Acer laptops seems come with pre-installed drivers, but after re-installation, they are all gone. (I can't find the original Acer backup disc) Please do not answer "move closer to the AP" and something related to "interference", as wireless worked with Ubuntu's default driver.

• How to unmount a VHD in Windows 7. There is no unmount option.

  I mounted a VHD file in Windows 7 using the Disk Manager. Once mounted, there is no option to Unmount it. The only thing close to such an option that I can find is if I click the icon in the taskbar notification area that I use to remove USB devices... there's an option to eject the virtual hard disk. However, when I click that, it says that it's in use and cannot be ejected. Even though... it's not in use, I never even browsed the drive. The disk manager is closed... and the only open files handles to the drive (according to disk performance in task manager) is SYSTEM. Ejecting devices cleanly has been a problem since Windows XP, and it sickens me to see it persist into windows 7.

• Recording Skype Video

  I have two problems - When doing a Skype video call, I can't see the other person. Skype says both my input and output are fast/good. I need a good recording program that will save both sides at once in a podcast. I've been playing around with Vodburner, but it seems to be very temperamental. I can't get anything longer than 30 seconds to save and even when if it does save, the file isn't compatible with Windows Live Movie Maker, even when I change the extension to .MP4 or .WMV. I tried to downlowd the format changer http://www.mediacoderhq.com/ that Vodburner suggests, but only got errors. I'm using Windows 7 with 62 GB free.

  Has anyone been able to install Windows 7 x64 under Bootcamp on a Mac? I was able to get the 32-bit version to install, but I cannot get x64 to install. The Mac doesn't seem to even want to boot the DVD. And even if I get it installed are there drivers that will work with it? I'd prefer to have Windows 7 x64 because I'd like to use the entire 6GB RAM in my MacBook Pro. I'd appreciate any tips or advice.

• Apache service hung and incoming requests not accepted

  Hi, My production server is running Apache v2.2.4 with mod_mono v1.2.4 on CentOS release 5.2 (Final). Suddenly, Apache service hung during normal usage time (approx. 1 pm EDT). Traffic is not too high at this time. This is the first time we're noticing this kind of behaviour in our server. I noticed from access log that even subsequent requests are also not received, even though there were incoming requests. I then manually tried to invoke my application call from web browser, it never returned successfully but it was still loading. I found no unusual behaviour/activity in: 1) Apache access_log and error_log 2) No kernel level errors found in /var/log/messages I've no other option but ended up restarting Apache service. Any idea on what would cause Apache to hang and thereby not allowing subsequent incoming requests? How do I debug/diagnose when this happens next time? Experts advice/recommendation on this are highly appreciated.

• Unable to modify variables phpmyadmin via variables tab (Xampp)

  I am quite new to phpmyadmin configuration. I had project where utf8 encoding is needed. What i'm trying to do is to change the variables text/char all into utf8. I changed, yes at that moment the values changed into values I wanted. But then when I terminate Xampp and reenters phpmyadmin page or even refreshing the page, all the values restored to default (original values). My phpmyadmin had default user as root and hadn't been set a password yet. There is also no logout button in phpmyadmin landing page. I had difficult time even to set the server connection collation (hangs indefinitely and never seems can be updated). phpmyadmin version:4.1.6 mysql:5.5.36 (latest version) I doubt this could be due to malformed installation, because same things happened in my other computer too (exactly the same versions). what could be wrong? thanks.

• How do I mount a harddrive to my /home folder in OS X?

  Im wondering how to mount my second HDD to my /home folder like you do in other *NIX systems, making the mount point just that folder and not a standard HDD. I am aware of the method of copying my /home folder and then telling OSX via System Preferences/Users & Groups to look for the folder in a different location. What I am wondering is if there is a way to properly mount the entire HDD to become nothing more than my /home. I don't want it to even show up in Finder as an HDD. Is this even possible?

• Why does QuickTime lag in Firefox if I don't put my mouse over it?

  This has happened for me as long as I can remember. Since the first version of Firefox, on multiple computers and under different versions of Windows. QuickTime plays fine in IE and Chrome (even with Firefox in the background), but in Firefox if my mouse is not over the QuickTime window then it will start to studder, then lag and eventually just stop. To be honest, I do keep quite a few tabs open, but Firefox stays at 1% CPU (even when QuickTime runs) and I have a few gigs of free RAM. It is the same for any resolution of video or audio. If the mouse is just one pixel in the client area of the QuickTime then it usually plays fine. Other video formats typically play fine. Does anyone else notice this behavior? Ultimately I would like a fix besides keeping my mouse over the QuickTime window.

  I'm having the same problem with a variety of new machines that I have built. When I RDC into the machine, the display does not update correctly. I get partial images, or refreshes only every 20-30 seconds. It is completely unusable. Eventually, it will even disconnect even though I am logged in. From RDCing into the machine, it looks like the machine is down, but it is fine. I can connect to it with an monitor and the problem is not visible. I think it is a problem with my network configuration. What should I look for to resolve this?

  I'm trying to compact a MS-Access database using JetComp.exe using a powershell script. Here is the operative lines: # 4. Run JetComp LogWrite("Begin: Running JetComp") .\JETCOMP.EXE -src: $srcDB -dest: $dstDB | Out-Null #Run this command and wait for it to finish... IfErrorExit("Error Compacting Database") LogWrite("End: Running JetComp") The JETCOMP.EXE program seems to complete long before it is actually finished and the $dstDB ends up being smaller than the compact should even make it. Initially ($srcDB) it's about 1.8 GB and by the time the command finishes it's about 300,000 kb (about 0.29 gb) that's a pretty long way off from 1.8 gb which when compacted manually ends up being about 1.6 gb. Is there some sort of timeout I don't know about in powershell scripts? P.S. I know that when running JETCOMP.EXE manually, that the system often detects it as "not responding" even though it's actually getting the job done, and waiting long enough will allow it to complete.

• HOSTS ignored when disconnected [closed]

  Problem I’m seeing a strange and extremely frustrating problem. Any system that is not connect to the Internet (Windows 7 shows the no Internet access icon because it cannot constantly ping Microsoft’s servers) cannot even access locally hosted servers. Hypothesis The problem appears to be that the HOSTS file is not being used to resolve DNS entries when there are no active NICs. Tests / Reproduction You can reproduce it as so: Disconnect a system from the Internet (make sure all wired and wireless connections are disconnected). If necessary, add an entry to the HOSTS file (e.g., 127.0.0.1 foobar or 127.0.0.1 foobar.com) Open a command-prompt Type ping foobar or ping foobar.com Observations The screenshots below show a clear and demonstrative example. In the first snap, a laptop is connected to a router wirelessly. The HOSTS file has only three entries and they resolve just fine. In the second snap, the wireless radio is turned off, so the entries in the HOSTS file are ignored. Moreover, notice that pinging localhost still works even without any active NICs (as does 127.0.0.1), but it is using the IPv6 address (must be hard-coded). You can see the same results in Windows XP with no IPv6 installed, so it has nothing to do with IPv6. I tried pining what should have resolved to 127.0.0.1 while the desktop system (with no wireless NICs) was connected via its Ethernet adapter, then again after pulling the cable from the router and waiting a couple of seconds, then again after plugging the cable back in. The same thing happens if instead of pulling out the cable, the NIC is disabled through software (the [Disable] button in the NIC’s Status dialog or via Device Manager). Conclusions It looks as though the HOSTS file is only being read and used if there is an active NIC, otherwise it is being ignored. This makes some sense in that if there are no active network adapters, then presumably there will not be any network activity, and thus no need to resolve host names via the HOSTS file. This assumption is specious however because it precludes locally hosted virtual servers. The HOSTS file should be used regardless of external DNS server connectivity, otherwise you cannot use simple/consistent/testing-production names for locally hosted servers when not connected to the Internet (for example web servers; help servers for Visual Studio, 3dsmax, etc.; and so on). Question Does anyone know how to force Windows to use the HOSTS file even if there are no active NICs? • Intermittent connection issues with atheros ar9285

  I have an asus K50IJ which has an atheros ar9285 wifi chip. It has decided to start to randomly drop internet. Although the card doesn't seem to notice it has. It will show full signal instead of say 3 bars. I tried to look at the atheros site for the latest driver but they don't even offer driver downloads. I then checked the asus site and it doesn't even list that card in the downloads for this laptop. I run Windows 7 64bit. It will drop either every minute or once a day while I am doing intensive bandwidth usage and when I am just idling.

• Bash Script to Back Up Backs Up Itself

  I have the following bash script that creates a tar.gz of my filesystem on a Kubuntu PC. The problem is, that it also tries to backup the tar.gz backup file, even though I am storing the backup in /tmp and omitting /tmp from the backup. • Stop external USB keyboard repeating key presses on Vista.

  We have an infuriating problem with a (Vista/Dell) laptop. When an external (Logitech) USB keyboard is attached to it, it regularly starts repeating key presses. When the user recently deleted an Outlook message, it deleted them all! When typing a message, suddenly it will start repeating the last keypress about 30 times (it varies). It's not a mechanical issue. We've switched the keyboard out four times. Even tried a brand new one one. Every time it's the same. Also, the keyboard works fine on other machines. The problem doesn't arise when the laptop's own keyboard is used - even if the external USB keyboard is still attached. I'm stumped? Any ideas. Not using an external keyboard isn't an option due to our health and safety policy (...don't ask...).
