• Install latest kernel to Ubuntu and have grub acknowledge the new installed kernel

  I have an installed Ubuntu Distro (Karmic 9.10) already. However, due to some problems with xorg ati driver, I cannot standby my computer. Some guy have suggested me to try the latest version of xorg driver which in turn requires a newer version of Linux kernel than the newest release available from Ubuntu Central Repository (2.6.33). I have searched though several articles on how to install a custom Linux kernel. However, these articles are so 2004/2005 and they were talking about lilo (???). Since then, I'm afraid that I cannot make the Grub Boot recognize the new Linux kernel properly (I'm just a newbie to Linux). I would love to know how to install the kernel into Ubuntu and have grub acknowledge the new installed kernel.

• Why would a FaceBook application "work" on a profile, but not a page?

  I made a FaceBook application that works fine on profiles, but I can't figure out how to get it to show on a FaceBook page. For example, after I visit the application canvas URL, allow the application, then edit application settings and "add" to box and tab view... I cannot click the "plus" symbol to the left of the tabs in order to add a tab for the application. It does not appear in the list of available applications. Meanwhile, the application is working/showing up on profiles with no issues. I DID check the "Installable to Pages" checkbox on the application (authentication tab) settings. What could cause this? • Hyper-V management remotely

  I'll tell you in advance that I'm newbie in the topic. I have a Win8 (Home) machine with Hyper-V installed behind a router. The router has a public IP and a domain attached. I have another Win8 (Work) machine also installed Hyper-V. I want to access to my home Hyper-V via Hyper-V Manager so I can manage my virtual machines from work. I found this article but I don't know if it's applicable to me. I thought that a simple port forwarding should work and I only need to do is grant the Work HV manager my domain and the port I choose and if it's pop a login form I only need to fill the user data of my Home computer? How can I solve this? My thoughts revolve around: - Port forwarding - set domain+port and set my home user - Set up a VPN and use the local ip address of my home computer (it looks like a little cumbersome and my router only support PPTP) I'm open to any other solution too. • Migrating from MyISAM to XtraDB

  Just a few questions that I just can't find anywhere about migrating to XtraDB. My group has been using MyISAM dbs for production and was wondering how hard is it to migrate to Percona's XtraDB and how would you go about doing so? Would I have to migrate MyISAM to InnoDB first or can I go straight to XtraDB? I installed Percona Server with XtraDB package on my Fedora machine but the documentation isn't very helpful as to how to use it so I was wondering does Percona just piggyback on a standard MySQL installation or is it a separate entity? • Mapping capslock to control on Mac OS X: works for some things, but not others?

  I've mapped my capslock key to control using the Modifier Keys mapping in System Preferences: Keyboard. I've also tried mapping to "right control" instead of "left control" as per http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20060825072451882 using a plist editor. The mapping seems to work in all cases except one: I can't use capslock with left-shift to make key mappings or apparently do anything else. capslock (as control) with right-shift works. I'm primarily testing by using control-tab / control-shift-tab to switch between tabs. Using the on-screen-keyboard viewer, I can get capslock-shift-(just about anything) to work, but not capslock-leftshift-tab. My best guess is that somehow the particular keyboard I'm working on is faulty, but I'm curious whether anyone else can reproduce this or has any ideas.

I'm looking for good alternatives to PuTTY that would include some of the aesthetics found in Mac and Ubuntu's Terminal applications. Tabs! The ability to drop the window's opacity The ability to open right to the command prompt and ssh in (no intial config window every time) Etc. • Control Targeted Browser Window

  When I have multiple browser windows open, I don't know how to control which is chosen to open a new link - when that link is selected in a non-browser application. For example, when I click a web link in OneNote or Word, the already-open browser that is chosen is whichever one of my Internet Explorer windows happens to have the least number of open browsing tabs. I would like to change that behavior. I'd like that each newly opened page, as selected from a non-browser app, always goes to the last internet explorer window I had active. Can this be done?

  I am a newbie in the world of storage and I am having a hard time digesting the physical architecture of some of the RAID levels. I am particularly interested in RAID 10, and 50. I asked the question specifically about RAID 10, because I feel if I understand that, I'll understand the other. So, I get the definition of RAID 10 - "minimum 4 disks, a striped array whose segments are mirrored". If I've got 4 disks and Disks 1 and 2 are a mirrored pair, and Disks 3 and 4 are a mirrored pair - where does the data get striped? Thanks.

• How to ssh to my dorm computer with shared public IP and no admin rights over the router?

  First of all, I am not a Linux or ssh newbie. I have searched for this problem on many forums extensively but nobody seemed to have discussed this. Please help me! I live in a student dorm (off-campus) and all students of the dorm share the same WAN IP (Internet or public IP), which is fortunately static. I am not an admin and have no control over the router that assigns private IP's to all of the students, so I can't really forward port 22 to my computer :( Is it still possible to establish an ssh connection to my dorm computer from a computer on campus?

• Ganglia divide colors by rolles

  Sorry for a silly question I am still newbie to Ganglia. In Ganglia I control few important metrics for mysql (seconds behind master and etc.). In addition I have few bunches of mysql servers (every bunch has it's own tasks, but all of the bunches should be tested for seconds behind master). I am interested if this possible to show all metrics on the one page with different colors to different bunches. Right now in metric "seconds behind master" I see all mysql servers with metric "seconds behind master" with colors to different states (red is critical, gray is ok). Can I set a color to a graph according to it's bunch? Thanks!

• Time Machine/iMac loses all trace of external hard drive after a few days

  First time posting, also a Mac newbie (recent windows convert) so I'm hoping I can get some help here :) I have a Hitachi Deskstar drive in an external casing that I got from ebuyer. (its one of those unknown fairly cheapish enclosures) connected via firewire. I hook it up and it works fine, but then at some point over the next week or so I'll realise that my last update was 3 days ago or so. At this point the Mac will not recognise the drive as existing and the only thing to do is switch off and on the external enclosure. It then works fine for a while. If I had to guess I'm assuming its powering down or something when the Mac goes into standby? Is there anyway to solve this?

  My Windows 8 machine is going to restart shortly... I have tried a few techniques such as shutdown /a which is not having much luck. Short of pausing the Windows Update service, is there anyway to stop this restart from happening? ---update--- Looks like the "restart" is all talk and no action! The time has gone and I am presented with this: So, it goes along with the top answer here (which I shall shortly accept) --- update again--- It did reset!!! My battery went critical and it turned itself off, I turned it back on (out of suspend) when it was plugged in, I logged in and the first thing it did was automatically restart - closing my open tabs in Chrome :( Oh well...

• Queue'ing cron jobs up to 10 times

  Hi All, This kind of touches on another post I made but is different so I have posted it as a new question. I have a script that runs that may take just over 1 minute to process, and my cron is set to run every minute. I can stop another cron job executing the script if the first one hasn't finished by using flock (php) in the file, however, this means that I would lose one iteration of the routine and have to wait nearly a minute before it is triggered again (as my understanding leads me to believe). What I would like to do is if the script is locked, not bomb out, but wait. Over time however, this could get quite high so I would also like to limit the amount of queued cron's to 10. I am a real newbie with Linux (had a Linux VPS for 3 days now) so I am not sure if my solution is even practical. Thanks.

• Un-balanced network speed although using fiberoptic cable line

  I'm not sure this is a right place to ask this question, but there's a strange thing that I don't quite sure what the reason is. My company has hired a fiberoptic cable line for network use (Wifi and cable through a router). But the strange thing is that, whenever someone view YouTube or listen stream music, then network speed for all the others become extremely slow. The download speed for that person is about 4-5 MB/s (or more), but others suffer. I'm still a newbie about networking. But I know there should be a solution. Could anyone tell me a way to stop this bad behavior? It's not possible for asking people not viewing YouTube, since that's part of their jobs. Any insights about this problem would be very welcome.

Please help me do the 2nd and 3rd steps. Context: I am trying to set up a virtual machine. I believe this is a necessary step for the VM to access my network and the internet. • Best memory-efficient web browser for Ubuntu?

  I've installed Ubuntu 10.10 on an old laptop with only 756 MB of RAM, Pentium M 1.6 processor. I'm using Google Chrome 11.0 (dev channel) for web browsing, and it appears to be using up most of my memory and processor time. Does anyone know of a better browser than Chrome on Ubuntu, for an older computer like mine? I'm new to Ubuntu, so there may also be tweaks I can make to my existing system to have it perform better. But right now it's pretty slow when I've got ~5-10 tabs open. Related question: memory-efficient web-browser

• How to get cluster information remotely via Powershell?

  I've been trying to find a good way to gather various pieces of a windows cluster setup remotely, preferably via WMI, as we are not yet at a point where Powershell remoting is implemented (and I know this problem goes away with that). I know I can use the following to get the current node: Get-WmiObject Win32_ComputerSystem -ComputerName RemoteServer1 | Select Name I also need the name property of Get-Cluster, which I can't figure out how to get from a remote system. • Can't kill process TGitCache.exe

  Sometimes, I suspect when I open a music folder during the right moon phase and during a leap microsecond, this process crashes and pops up an error reporting dialogue. I decline to report the error, because that also fails by now, and choose Exit. Exit just delays the re-appearance of the error reporting dialogue for about 2 seconds. If I try and kill the process using SysInternals' Process Explorer the process is just restarted, only to crash again. So, I'm pretty sure another process, probably a service because TGitCache doesn't have a parent process and no other Git processes are visible, is keeping tabs on this process and restarting it if it dies. This is cruel and inhuman, but how can I find which nanny process is prolonging the agony?

• ubuntu Grub boot hangs on external usb drive

  Hi, i just gave xubuntu another try and installed it ordinarily on a external usb harddisk. I have another harddisk installed inside the laptop that has Windows Xp on it. Now the problem: When I boot from the external drive the boot menu of Grub 2 shows up and i see all installed bootable partitions including windows. Now I select Xubuntu and wait. When the Xubuntu Logo shows up the boot process hangs. Now the funny thing. When the logo shows up I can unplug the usb drive and reconnect it real fast. Then the boot process will continue!!!   Hello. I'm not really sure what to make of this. The key combination of ^? and ^? have stopped working for one of the two users on my OS X installation. I use these keys all the time (switching tabs in terminal, IntelliJ primarily), and it's driving me crazy. On one user account, it works fine. On the other, it doesn't. This happened today and nothing significant comes to mind that would have caused some weird keybinding issue. • How can I create an AMI from an existing EC2 instance?

  (I suspect that this may already be answered somewhere, since it seems like it would be a common operation. But I can't find it, so...) I am a relative AWS newbie. I have inherited a running Amazon EC2 instance, with various items (Apache, MySQL, Sphinx, ...) installed on it and a bunch of configuration. I'd like to turn it into an AMI that I can spin up other instances from. I can't find any information on creating a custom AMI on Amazon's site - only the fact that you can, repeatedly referenced, as if to taunt me... I believe this is not an EBS-backed instance, just an "ordinary" one. I do not know what AMI it was originally created from. How would I create an AMI that I could use for spinning up other instances which will be identical except for the hostname?
