• Running gdb on Ubuntu 9.10 Apache2 Install

  Hi all, I am trying to run gdb to debug my Ubuntu 9.10 Apache2 install and having a couple of problems: It seems like the package installed by Ubuntu for Apache2 does not include debugging symbols; is there a different version of the package I should be using for developing/debugging? When I try to run gdb, I get an error that looks to be caused by some missing environment variable. Are there additional options I should pass to "run" to get this to work? • Nagios NTP, discarding peer

  We're using nagios *check_ntp_time* for monitoring time on our servers. Unfortunately the service is flapping. And reporting a lot of false-positives. It happens everytime for random server in random day time and lasts for ~10-30 minutes. Every time they edvise to upgrade nagios-plugins, because in version prior to 1.4.13 there was a bug with inserted leap second. But we have already newer version of nagios-plugins.

• 550 Forged HELO with postfix on debian lenny

  I'm running postfix on a debian lenny system. sending mail in general works without any problems. however some recipent mail systems return an error and I can't get a clue what is causing the problem. So far I suspect that this is either postfix setup itself or the reverse dns resolution. The mail server is running on a virtual server from my service provider. running the command hostname is returning my.domain however running host <ip-address> is returning some alias from the virtual server system. now i'm not quite sure if that is causing my problem???? • HA Proxy won't load balance my web requests. What have I done wrong?

  I've finally got HA Proxy set up and running in a way I think I want. However, it is not load balancing the web requests it receives. All requests are currently being forwarded to the first server in the cluster. I'm going to paste my configuration below - if anyone can see where I may have gone wrong, I'd appreciate it. This is my first stab at configuring web servers in a *nix environment. First up, I have HA Proxy running on the same host as the first server in the apache cluster. We are moving these servers to virtual later on, and they will have different virtual hosts, but I wanted to get this running now. Both web servers are receiving their health checks, and are reporting back correctly. The haproxy?stats page correctly reports servers that are up and down. I've tested this by altering the name of the file that is checked. I haven't put any load onto these servers yet. I've just opened up the URLs on several tabs (private browsing), and had several co-workers hit the URL too. All of the traffic goes to WEB1. • Group Policy GPO not 'seen' at client

  I have a new OU (natorg.local\NATO\Users) that I am trying to apply GP to. I have created a new user in this OU, and linked the 3 GPO's to this OU: DESKTOP - Folder Redirection (AppData) DESKTOP - Folder Redirection (Desktop) DESKTOP - Folder Redirection (Documents) Hopefully the names are sufficient to suggest what they do exactly. The settings are under User Settings so there is no Loopback processing required (if my understanding is correct). Can anyone suggest why these GP Objects would be "invisible" to the client?

• INFORMIX - listener thread err 25582

  I´ve been digging different forums in the last 7 days looking for a possible solution.... Our database is based on informix running in a Linux server (LINUX SUSE 11). Suddenly, last saturday informix began to show an error message: listener-thread err=-25582 oserr=0, network connection is broken End users started to call reporting about slow network performance to this server, moments where the database application lost connection with server...so we proceeded doing a ping to the db server, getting good responses (1ms) without losing packets. I tried typing telnet (ipserver) 1526 which is informix's port for the application, it works. We had to disconnect the server and enable a backup db server which is located on another branch. It has been working in a regular way because the backup server hasn´t good specs (it is an old dell server model). So, I scanned the main server looking for viruses using Trend Micro Server Protect, it didn´t find anything (0 viruses and spywares). I revised the switches and routers, but I haven´t find anything strange... What else could be ? Thanks in advanced for your time and help with this issue.....I would really appreciate any advice...

• Mocking successive calls of similar type via sequential mocking

  In this post , i show how you can benefit from  sequential mocking feature[In JustMock] for setting up expectations with successive calls of same type.  To start let’s first consider the following dummy database and entity class. public class Person {     public virtual string Name { get; set; }     public virtual int Age { get; set; } }   public interface IDataBase {     T Get<T>(); } Now, our test goal is to return different entity for successive calls on IDataBase.Get<T>(). By default, the behavior in JustMock is override , which is similar to other popular mocking tools. By override it means that the tool will consider always the latest user setup. The solution though pretty simple and but neat(to me) and way too simpler than using a collection to solve this type of cases. Hope that helps P.S. The example shown in my blog is using interface don’t require a profiler  and you can even use a notepad and build it referencing Telerik.JustMock.dll, run it with GUI tools and it will work. But this feature also applies to concrete methods that includes JM profiler and can be implemented for more complex scenarios.

• Authenticating Active Directory Users to Mac OS X Mavericks Server L2TP VPN Service

  We have a Windows Server 2012 Active Directory Infrastructure that consists of two domain controllers. Bound to the Active Directory Domain is a Mac OS X Mavericks Server 10.9.3. The server runs Profile Manager and VPN Services. My Active Directory users are able to authenticate to the Profile Manager, but not the VPN. I have found several threads on other forums of other users reporting similar issues, here is just one of many references: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5174619 It appears as though the issue is related to a CHAP authentication failure. Can anyone suggest what next troubleshooting steps I might take? Is there a way to liberalize the authentication mechanism to include MSCHAP? Here is an excerpt of the transaction from the logs. • Help Installing SQL Server 2008 Express Edition

  Ok I am running Windows 7, 64 bit. I cleaned of SQL server 2005 completely off my system leaving only SQL Compact Edition. I went here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=01af61e6-2f63-4291-bcad-fd500f6027ff&displaylang=en and installed SQL Server 2008 Express Edition Service Pack 1. After the install, under my start bar menu all i have for SQL configuration tools are the Configuration Manager, Error and Usage Reporting and the Install Center. I don't have the SQL Managment Studio. So I went here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=08e52ac2-1d62-45f6-9a4a-4b76a8564a2b&displaylang=en and downloaded the SQL Server 2008 Management Studio Express but when I try to install it I get a warning says This program has known compatibility issues and that I need to Install SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1. I thought that is what I installed. So, I tried to continue running the install but I then get an error message that says Invoke or BeginInvoke can not be called on a Form before it is opened... How can I check if Service pack 1 is installed or not? What should I do? Also I rebooted my system and checked for Windows Updates and it says that Windows it up to date.

• Why Is ModSecurity Unable to Access the Data Directory?

  Update I think we've solved this; the problem appears to have been a result of the /modsec_storage directory having an incorrect value for its SELinux context type. However, we're still not sure, because although after I changed the SELinux context type value, Apache was able to create files in that directory for the global and ip collections (global.dir/global.pag and ip.dir/ip.pag), the new files still have zero bytes. I'm new to ModSecurity and am not sure if the files are empty because something is wrong with the configuration or if ModSecurity has simply determined it doesn't need to store IP addresses persistently after each transaction ends. Anyone able to offer guidance here? I've recently installed ModSecurity (v2.5.12 / CRS v2.0.8) on our production server, and everything works great, except for these errors that it keeps writing to the Apache error log: Failed to access DBM file "/modsec_storage/global": Permission denied [hostname "www.internationalstudent.com"] [uri "/includes/soc_bookmarks/images/delicious.png"] [unique_id "LZ6jc38AAAEAAFO6408AAABO"] Failed to access DBM file "/modsec_storage/ip": Permission denied [hostname "www.internationalstudent.com"] [uri "/includes/soc_bookmarks/images/delicious.png"] [unique_id "LZ6jc38AAAEAAFO6408AAABO"] After following the instructions for file permission settings in the ModSecurity handbook by Ivan Ristic, with no success, I created a /modsec_storage directory, set the owner & group to apache, and set the permissions for the directory recursively to 777. However, ModSecurity is still reporting the same permission errors, so I am stumped. Can anyone tell me how to fix this?

• Searching for the Perfect Developer&rsquo;s Laptop.

  I have been in the market for a new computer for several months. I set out with a budget of around $1200. I knew up front that the machine would be used for developing applications and maybe some light gaming. I kept switching between buying a laptop or a desktop but the laptop won because: With a Laptop, I can carry it everywhere and with a desktop I can’t. I searched for about 2 weeks and narrowed it down to a list of must-have’s : i7 Processor (I wasn’t going to settle for an i5 or AMD. I wanted a true Quad-core machine, not 2 dual-core fused together). 15.6” monitor SSD 128GB or Larger. – It’s almost 2011 and I don’t want an old standard HDD in this machine. 8GB of DDR3 Ram. – The more the better, right? 1GB Video Card (Prefer NVidia) – I might want to play games with this. HDMI Port – Almost a standard on new Machines. This would be used when I am on the road and want to stream Netflix to the HDTV in the Hotel room. Webcam Built-in – This would be to video chat with the wife and kids if I am on the road. 6-Cell Battery. – I’ve read that an i7 in a laptop really kills the battery. A 6-cell or 9-cell is even better. That is a pretty long list for a budget of around $1200. I searched around the internet and could not buy this machine prebuilt for under $1200. That was even with coupons and my company’s 10% Dell discount. The only way that I would get a machine like this was to buy a prebuilt and replace parts. I chose the  Lenovo Y560 on Newegg to start as my base. Below is a top-down picture of it.   Part 1: The Hardware The Specs for this machine: Color :  GrayOperating System : Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bitCPU Type : Intel Core i7-740QM(1.73GHz)Screen : 15.6" WXGAMemory Size : 4GB DDR3Hard Disk : 500GBOptical Drive : DVD±R/RWGraphics Card : ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730Video Memory : 1GBCommunication : Gigabit LAN and WLANCard slot : 1 x Express Card/34Battery Life : Up to 3.5 hoursDimensions : 15.20" x 10.00" x 0.80" - 1.30"Weight : 5.95 lbs. This computer met most of the requirements above except that it didn’t come with an SSD or have 8GB of DDR3 Memory. So, I needed to start shopping except this time for an SSD. I asked around on twitter and other hardware forums and everyone pointed me to the Crucial C300 SSD. After checking prices of the drive, it was going to cost an extra $275 bucks and I was going from a spacious 500GB drive to 128GB. After watching some of the SSD videos on YouTube I started feeling better. Below is a pic of the Crucial C300 SSD. The second thing that I needed to upgrade was the RAM. It came with 4GB of DDR3 RAM, but it was slow. I decided to buy the Crucial 8GB (4GB x 2) Kit from Newegg. This RAM cost an extra $120 and had a CAS Latency of 7. In the end this machine delivered everything that I wanted and it cost around $1300. You are probably saying, well your budget was $1200. I have spare parts that I’m planning on selling on eBay or Anandtech.  =) If you are interested then shoot me an email and I will give you a great deal mbcrump[at]gmail[dot]com. 500GB Laptop 7200RPM HDD 4GB of DDR3 RAM (2GB x 2) faceVision HD 720p Camera – Unopened In the end my Windows Experience Rating of the SSD was 7.7 and the CPU 7.1. The max that you can get is a 7.9. Part 2: The Software I’m very lucky that I get a lot of software for free. When choosing a laptop, the OS really doesn’t matter because I would never keep the bloatware pre-installed or Windows 7 Home Premium on my main development machine. Matter of fact, as soon as I got the laptop, I immediately took out the old HDD without booting into it. After I got the SSD into the machine, I installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit. The BIOS was out of date, so I updated that to the latest version and started downloading drivers off of Lenovo’s site. I had to download the Wireless Networking Drivers to a USB-Key before I could get my machine on my wireless network. I also discovered that if the date on your computer is off then you cannot join the Windows 7 Homegroup until you fix it. I’m aware that most people like peeking into what programs other software developers use and I went ahead and listed my “essentials” of a fresh build. I am a big Silverlight guy, so naturally some of the software listed below is specific to Silverlight. You should also check out my master list of Tools and Utilities for the .NET Developer.   I have had an ASUS EEE Box 1501P for just a little bit over a year. Of course it breaks 2 months after the warranty runs out. http://www.asus.com/Eee/EeeBox_PC/EeeBox_PC_EB1501P/ I have been using the box as a Home Media Center. Running mostly 24/7 often pausing a video overnight. Since last week the fan started running extremely loud. After some digging I found that the Intel Atom CPU in it is overheating and the built-in sensor is reporting temperatures way over 105°C. This got me worried, so I took the unit apart. Completely vacuumed the heat sink, oiled the fan, but the unit is still showing the same behaviour. After turning it on and just observing the hardware monitor in the BIOS the temperature slowly rises from 40°C to over 95°C in appx 5 min. I am running the newest BIOS and a lightweight Linux OPENELEC OS with XBMC on it. Now I am wondering if it could be a faulty heat sensor in the Atom. Recommended running temperature is up to 85°C, but I have not detected any performance hits when running at the above mentioned 105°C and there seem to be no software faults. How can an Atom with an attached heat sink and a fan running at full capacity even get this hot in the first place at 0 load? Aren't those things designed to generate virtually no heat? Could it be a faulty heat sensor? What shall I try to fix this? I would prefer not to damage the CPU, since it is hard fused into the motherboard and cannot be replaced. I could remove the heat pipe/heat sink, but it is getting hot, so heat is properly transferring from the CPU to the heat pipe, the fan is running at full capacity, is recently oiled and warm air is making it out of the exhaust. Edit: One more note: The North-bridge (or whatever it is called nowadays) is on the same heat pipe.

• Load Testing a Security/Gateway Appliance

  In a couple weeks I will load testing a security/gateway appliance. We're a small residential college, and that "residential" means the traffic moving through the appliance is a bit like the Wild West. We have everything from Facebook to World of Warcraft, BitTorrent to Netflix, or Halo to YouTube... basically anything you might find in the home of a high-school or college aged person. Somewhere in there some real academic work gets done as well. We rely on our current appliance for traffic shaping, antivirus, malware filtering, intrusion detection on our servers, logging and abuse reporting, and even some content filtering. All this puts a decent load when we have students around, and I'm concerned about the ability of the new candidate to keep up. On paper it should handle things, but I'm worried. Prior experience is that vendors greatly over-report what an appliance can handle. The product also includes a licensed session limit, and I'm also worried that just a few misbehaving students could unwittingly bring us to that limit and cause service disruptions. I need to know this will work for our campus in order to commit to it. Going a performance level higher in that product takes the pricing way out of line with what we expect and have done in the past. What I need is a good way to load test this guy. My problem is that our current level of summer traffic is less than one percent of what it will be when students come back just six weeks from now. Any ideas on how to really stress this thing and see what it can do, in a way that will give me some clear ideas o. How that will scale for our campus? For the curious, I'm looking at a Watchguard 515, but it could be anything. If I were evaluating a competitor, I'd ask the same question.

• EC2: How dangerous is it to turn off fsck for EBS volumes?

  I have been tearing my hair out trying to figure out why my EC2 instances (made from my own custom AMIs) were taking many tries to come up properly. They would fail with the following error: fsck.ext3: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/sdf For both of the EBS volumes I was attaching during startup. Finally, I figured out the problem. I had put this in /etc/fstab: /dev/sdf /export ext3 defaults 1 2 /dev/sdi /export2 ext3 defaults 1 2 The 2 tells the system to fsck the drives on the way up. Changing this to /dev/sdf /export ext3 defaults 1 0 /dev/sdi /export2 ext3 defaults 1 0 Avoids the problem completely, but now the volumes are never going to be fsck'd. How much does this matter? Once the instance goes into production it's going to be running pretty much 24/7, so not many fscks would be happening anyway, but still... this just feels like a bad idea. I have not been able to find anyone else even reporting this problem (there are people with the same error message, but different causes). It seems unbelievable that I could be the only person to ever make this mistake, but perhaps I'm just talented that way. :) If there is another solution to the problem I would love to hear it; I have not been able to find one.

• How to find out which program a default beep is coming from in Windows 7?

  There's a "default beep" (as defined in System Sounds) that emanates from my computer every so often. It kind of goes like this (where each number is a "default beep" sound): 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. So there's a distinct pattern to it. I thought I had this figured out a way to figure out what was happening by going to Control Panel-Ease of Access-Ease of Access Center-Replace sounds with visual cues But that just isn't the case. Whichever window I click on, that one displays the visual queue when this happens. It's driving me crazy, and I can't figure out which program is causing this. Update: it appears to only happen on one user profile on the computer...does that help? Update 2: Discovered that this sound was coming from a utility on my laptop called ASUS NB Probe; I'm certain that it is emanating from this program because the error message displayed by it changes in sync with the sound playing. Apparently the S.M.A.R.T. feature of my hard drive was reporting an issue. It displays the issue for a brief second and then makes it disappear, I'll have to keep watching it to see what it says, but I believe is says something about a read. I have an external hdd connected with eSATA to a container of sorts (BlacX) that you can plug two hdds into. I have one hdd attached and it's a Western Digital WD1001FALS - 00E8B0 Thanks again! Now I'm off to go around the Internet and report on this...since I posted it so many places!

• Need help with MS Access 07 & Reports

  Hey there, I'm finding it difficult to get MS reporting working to what I'd like to show. What I'm trying to do is: a) In my database store a URL file (HTTP external file), that is a .jpeg. I'd like to use that URL to call the image on the report sheet. I have tried to use 'Control source' on the data panel, but with no success. Any way I can get Dynamic Images to show up on each database. Also, I have a couple of Relational Databases. One Defines Values: For Example: DefinePets('petID','Name of Pet') The other one links the Main DB with the 'DefinePets' database. Eg: connect('petID','mainID','extraFeild') I'd like my report to Go into the "connect" Table, where the the currently viewed Record Value = mainID, then find petID and return Name of Pet. There is a many to many link between definePets and the main Table. (Therefore connect is joining them up) Or is that too much to ask from a simple package like Access? Thanks.

• Why are SMART error rates going down?

  I have a hard drive that's part of a Linux software raid5 array. SMART has reported that its multi_zone_error_rate was 0, then 1, then 3. So I figured I better start backing up more frequently and prepare to replace the drive. Now, today, the multi_zone_error_rate of that very same drive is back down to 1. It seems that 2 errors unhappened while I wasn't looking. I've also seen simliar behaviour by inspecting the syslog on the server. None of these are the drive that had the multi_zone weirdness. I haven't seen any problems from the RAID; its most recent scrub ( < 24 hours ago) came back totally clean. The only thing I can think of is that the SMART reporting circuitry on the drive isn't working properly all the time. The cables are in tight on the drive and board. What's going on here?

• VMWare Guest Info - Wrong IP Returned

  We're running a VDI environment with vSphere 4.0 and Oracle VDI 3.2.2 and are having a bit of a problem with users that connect to an IPSec VPN from within their VM. For some reason, once connected to the VPN, the VMWare API returns GuestInfo.ipAddress as the VPN IP rather than the primary IP of the only NIC on the system. The IP address shown in net[0].ipAddress is the correct address and is what vSphere client is reporting. Is there any way to get VMWare tools to report the net[0].ipAddress as GuestInfo.ipAddress? Below is sample output from the guestinfo.pl script. 172.16.1.2 is the example "bad" VPN address that our VDI software is seeing. • Strange IIS hits originating from Trend Micro

  I'm trying to trace thru an error on a extranet site I maintain. I've had a look thru the logs, and I'm seeing hits originate from these IP addresses: 216.104.15.130 216.104.15.138 216.104.15.142 216.104.15.13 150.70.84.49 150.70.84.44 Network-tools.com gives 'TREND MICRO INCORPORATED' as the owner of all these IPs. The hits fail as they aren't sending any cookies (therefore aren't considered logged in). The hits are to pages containing URLs that only the logged in user would see, i.e. ImageEdit.aspx?ImageId=467424. I.e. the server isn't guessing these URLs, someone would have to log into the site to know these URLs exist. Theory: the Trend Antivirus client grabs URLs and sends them to the server for 'extra processing'? Googling around gives me this: http://www.forumpostersunion.com/showthread.php?p=51272 - where people are reporting comment spam from these addresses. The articles says their servers have been hacked (a few months ago, presumably fixed now?). A hacked server wouldn't explain how the URLs have been plucked off the user's PCs. Has anyone seen this before? Anything nefarious going on here?

• MySQL Workbench is not finding MySQL service? [closed]

  I set up a local MySQL server, currently with no databases. I'm trying to create a new server instance profile in MySQL Workbench to manage the server, and during the Create New Server Instance Profile wizard, it gets to the Windows Management section and tells me that No MySQL service found. I went into Task Manager and found the process mysqld.exe to be running, under the user name of NETWORK SERVICE. Then I went into the Services tab and found that MySQLServerName (I custom named the Windows service) is also there, and status is running. I ran cports and looked at what ports mysqld.exe is using, and ran a telnet command on that port. It's reporting that the port is being listened in on. I then ran the MySQL Command Line Client to be sure, and after \r it gives me a proper connection ID and a list of databases (NONE at this point). But with all this, I can't make the wizard find a running service. I've Googled this and found no answers, so please, if someone would help shed some light on this issue that'd be great!
