  • Threading cost - minimum execution time when threads would add speed

    I am working on a C# application that works with an array. It walks through it (meaning that at one time only a narrow part of the array is used). I am considering adding threads in it to make it perform faster (it runs on a dualcore computer). The problem is that I do not know if it would actually help, because threads cost something and this cost could easily be more than the parallel gain... So how do I determine if threading would help?

  • iPhone GUI for real-time log message display

    My goal is to have a screen on my GUI dedicated to logging real-time messages generated by my internal components. A certain limit will be set on the log messages so that older messages are pruned. I'm thinking about implementing using a UITextView with a NSMutableString to store the output. I would have to perform manual pruning somehow on the NSMutableString object. Is a better way to implement this?

  • Comparing a time delta in python

    I have a variable which is <type 'datetime.timedelta'> and I would like to compare it against certain values. Lets say d produces this datetime.timedelta value 0:00:01.782000 I would like to compare it like this: #if d is greater than 1 minute if d>1:00: print "elapsed time is greater than 1 minute" I have tried converting datetime.timedelta.strptime() but that does seem to work. Is there an easier way to compare this value?

    There are plenty of performance questions on this site already, but it occurs to me that almost all are very problem-specific and fairly narrow. And almost all repeat the advice to avoid premature optimization. Let's assume: the code already is working correctly the algorithms chosen are already optimal for the circumstances of the problem the code has been measured, and the offending routines have been isolated all attempts to optimize will also be measured to ensure they do not make matters worse What I am looking for here is strategies and tricks to squeeze out up to the last few percent in a critical algorithm when there is nothing else left to do but whatever it takes. Ideally, try to make answers language agnostic, and indicate any down-sides to the suggested strategies where applicable. I'll add a reply with my own initial suggestions, and look forward to whatever else the SO community can think of.

    I am new to these tecnologies. I want to get realtime visitor for each products for my site. I mean a notify like "X users seeing this product". Whenever an user connects to a product counter will be increased for this product and when disconnects counter will be decreased just for this product. I tried to search a lots of documents but i got confused. I am using Predis Library for PHP. What i have done may totaly be wrong. I am not sure Where to put createClient , When to subscribe & When to unsubscribe.     Hey i am trying to calculate a cosinor analysis in statistica but am at a loss as to how to do so. I need to calculate the MESOR, AMPLITUDE, and ACROPHASE of ciracadian rhythm data. http://www.wepapers.com/Papers/73565/Cosinor_analysis_of_accident_risk_using__SPSS%27s_regression_procedures.ppt there is a link that shows how to do it, the formulas and such, but it has not given me much help. If started process completes within 1 second, main program capture its output for further processing. If it doesn't finishes in 1 second, main program just terminate it and start another new process.   • DB time always showing as zero in Rails development log timings

    I've noticed that the Rails log correctly displays the time taken to execute an action in the logs, and that the View: part of that is also rendered correctly. However, the DB: value is always zero: Aug 11 13:00:22 [2326] INFO: Completed in 2072ms (View: 94, DB: 0) | 200 OK In fact, all my DB timings are being logged as zero. I'm logging at DEBUG level, in development mode, running Rails 2.3.2. Apologies in advance if the answer is blatantly obvious.

  • Line appears on paper each time HTML file is printed

    My application builds and prints HTML reports using AxWebBrowser.ExecWb method. Lately each time a report is printed a thin horizontal line is printed across it. It's not supposed to be there, it doesn't appear in any preview (Word, browser), but it's always there on the paper, always at the same absolute location and regardless of the printer type. Any ideas?
