    I'm trying to add a "green team" to an example scoring GUI I found online. For some reason, the code compiles, but it runs with only the original two teams. I've tried playing around with the sizes/locations somewhat clumsily, and since no change was observed with these modications (NO change at ALL), I admit that I must be missing some necessary property or something. Any help?     Most of programming languages (Server-side languages for web development) needs a learning curve and requires some time to learn. However, I'm sure there is a difference between them. So, for example you can master the 'X' language in less time than the 'Y' language. I'm a beginner in web development, meaning that I just know HTML and CSS and now want to choose the right tool for building dynamic sites. What I'm looking for is a language that is easy to master in less time than other languages. So, is there a language that can suit my needs? If so, please let me know about what should I learn in it? (for example, which frameworks?, libraries?, IDEs?, databases?, etc). In the end, I don't want to regret my choice of the language and want to learn solid basics in it and in programming in general.

As I get closer to my senior year I have noticed that continuing my studies is the best choice right for me now. I see that several universities offer an Computer Science Master's Degree and an Software Engineering degree. What are their pros and cons? I feel that while the Computer Science master's degree seems a little too broad the Software Engineering is too restrictive. I did not decide yet between an career of Software development or research ( algorithm development among other things ). Any advice would be greatly apreciated!

  • Expanding development team for a startup

    I'm a software developer and co-founder of a start up that's in a sprint to launch a web app the next 2 months. We have about 3 months of burn time we have before we need to get some funding. By that time, we want to have a product with active users, and ideally some revenue. I'm fairly confident that I can accomplish the task by myself, but I have also never launched a project of this magnitude. The better product we can build in this timespan, the faster we can grow our user base, and the better our fundraising options will be. So I'm looking to bring someone onboard to hack with me. Maybe more than one person. Good help is hard to find, as we all know, and while I'm willing to share equity, I also want that to be contingent on a productive fit. What is the best approach to a trial-type framework for hiring another developer? Something where the other person feels that their work will be rewarded if they do well and that they can't be left empty-handed at my whim, but where I know that if it turns out not to be a good fit, I can pull the cord without significant loss?

    After six months of development on a project, our stakeholders have had a "gut check" and have decided that the path that we've been walking (a custom designed application framework and data access layer) is holding us (the developers) back from quickly developing the features they would like to see. After several days of debate management and the development team have decided to scrap the current incarnation and start over using ASP.net MVC, with Entity Framework as the bases of the a 'quick and dirty', lets just get it done project. In days following, our senior developer who has never worked with MVC or Entity Framework has finally gotten into a sample project and done some work. His take on ASP.net MVC, "this is not software engineering". So my question is this; what do you do, when one doesn't think the code is complicated enough?

    I have root ssh/terminal access to a linux server. How do I determine which version of centos I have? Some people suggested I run the command cat /etc/redhat-release but I got an error saying file not found. In fact, i'm not entirely sure i'm even using CentOS. That's what some suggested it might be. Here's a list of commands I tried that gave me no file or directory error: cat /etc/*release* cat /etc/*version* cat /proc/*version* cat /proc/*release* Here's a list of linux commands that do not exist: lsb_release: command not found wget: command not found yum: command not found

  • Upgrading an app to support iOS5, 6 and 7

    We are looking at an app that needs an upgrade. Currently it runs on iOS4, 5 & 6. The upgrade will move to iOS5, 6 & 7. It will also involve some UI changes and new features. I've been reading stuff on iOS7 and looking at things like auto-layout. What we are trying to figure out is the best way to handle the differences between the various iOS versions. Auto-layout seems like a good idea, but it's not available on iOS 5. There are also API changes to consider between all 3 versions and other new features of iOS7. So the questions: How would you handle auto layout given iOS5 does not have it? Are there any significant differences between the SDKs that you think would cause issues? Would we be better off with separate code bases?

  • Is The Ease Of Windows Phone Development Ruining Its Image

    I was reading an article on Mashable recently by a long time iPhone user who is living solely on a Lumia 920 at the moment and giving her assessment.  One thing that struck a nerve with me was her describing the Windows Phone ecosystem as immature.  She wasn’t saying this because of the number of apps or the big names like most people do.  She means the quality of the apps in the store. This hit a nerve with me.  I find it hard to believe that the majority of app on iOS are of any higher quality than any other platform.  I believe in any ecosystem you are going to find some high end, high quality apps, but the majority by default will be from people who are trying to solve a problem but do not have the resources to have top graphics and full blown testing.  There will also be a large number that are just there trying to trick you into giving up some cash. Does any of the mean that we shouldn’t take notice of this complaint?  Of course not!  We should always strive to publish the best quality apps possible.  Don’t do things like leaving default app icons and backgrounds.  Put a little effort into your design.  You should also spend as much time as possible ensuring against crashes and giving the user the best experience possible.  Think through your apps organization and navigation.  Go the extra step of putting it into beta and letting select people use it and give you feedback before going to full release.     Hi All, I'm trying to learn to be a Unix/Linux Sysadmin, and am hoping to get some hands-on experience by setting up a few installs (VMs, old comps, and the like) at home and practicing administering them. I was wondering, in the experience of those on this site, which distros are critical to be comfortable with. Obviously, to a certain extent, they're all similar, but there are substantial enough differences between administering, say, Debian, OpenSolaris, FreeBSD, and CentOS. So, which distros are most important to practice with in your opinion? Which have had most demand/come up most often in actual work situations? Thanks!

    Using Command rsync -avzP --delete --omit-dir-times ../../ [email protected]:/var/www/mysite/ I'm getting rsync: mkstemp "/var/www/mysite/.." failed: Permission denied (13) If ext is in the www-data group should I still set all the files to be owned by user www-data? I am trying to publish the files with rsync and then set the permissions using sudo chown -R www-data doc sudo chgrp -R www-data doc but I can't even rsync because of the permission denied.     Pre: I'm new with Maven. I used a lot of ant before. Qst: I decided to switch my project to maven since there are a lot of dependencies. But I have custom step in package phase (I'm BB dev - packing and signing) which is not available in maven yet. To process these tasks I have to download additional execs/jars. Is it common/have sense in Maven philosophy to load additional tools? Sure I could call ant from maven but it's not a question. Any helpful book about maven phases, philosophy and uses?
