  • Making CopySourceAsHtml add-on work with VS2010

    As there are still bloggers who use CopySourceAsHtml add-on for Visual Studio to get syntax highlighted code to their blog posts and there is no guidance in CSAH site how to make it work with Visual Studio 2010 I will give my guidance here. Almost all code in this blog is syntax highlighted by this add-on (read more from my post Visual Studio add-in: CopySourceAsHTML). Last version of CSAH is available for VS2008 but it is easy to make it work with VS2010. Just follow these steps. Close VS2010 if it is opened. Goto folder MyDocuments\Visual Studio 2010. Move to AddIns subfolder (create it if there is no such subfolder). Create file called CopySourceAsHtml.AddIn and open it in text editor.   • Why am I unable to add an existing project to my solution in Visual Studio 2008?

    I am unable to add an existing project or an existing item to any project or solution in visual studio 2008 (SP1). I only get an "Operation cannot be completed error". Any ideas? Things I have tried that did not work: ran devenv /resetsettings (no luck) Un-installed Resharper 4.5. (no luck) Repaired Visual Studio from Add/Remove Programs. (no luck) Un-installed AnkhSVN. (no luck) Note I am using Windows 7.

  • How to make project auto-estimate duration based on work?

    This one has bothered me for a long while. I like to do estimates thinking on how much time a certain task will take (I'm in TI business), so, let's say, it takes 12 hours to build a program. Now, let's say I tell Project that my beginning date is today. If I allocate one resource to this task, it means that the task will last 1,5 days, implying that it will end tomorrow. But right now, that is not what it's doing. I say that the task will take 1 hour, and when I add a resource to it, it allocate the resource at [13%] basis, which means that the duration is still fixed... project is trying to make the task last for a day. I have, on many occasions, accomplished this. What I do is build a plan based on these rough estimates for effort, then I allocate tasks to resources. Times conflict, so I level resources and then Project magically tells me how long, in days, will it take. But every time I have to start estimating again, I end up having trouble on how to make project work like that.

  • Debugging XSLT with extension objects in Visual Studio 2010

    I'm currently working on a project that involves a lot of XSLT transformations and I really need a debugger (I have XSLTs that are 1000+ lines long and I didn't write them :-). The project is written in C# and makes use of extension objects: xslArg.AddExtensionObject("urn:<obj>", new <Obj>()); From my knowledge, in this situation Visual Studio is the only tool that can help me debug the transformations step-by-step. The static debugger is no use because of the extension objects (it throws an error when it reaches elements that reference their namespace). Fortunately, I've found this thread which gave me a starting point (at least I know it can be done). After searching MSDN, I found the criteria that makes stepping into the transform possible. They are listed here. In short: the XML and the XSLT must be loaded via a class that has the IXmlLineInfo interface (XmlReader & co.) the XML resolver used in the XSLTCompiledTransform constructor is file-based (XmlUriResolver should work). the stylesheet should be on the local machine or on the intranet (?) From what I can tell, I fit all these criteria, but it still doesn't work. The relevant code samples are posted below: // [...] xslTransform = new XslCompiledTransform(true); xslTransform.Load(XmlReader.Create(new StringReader(contents)), null, new BaseUriXmlResolver(xslLocalPath)); // [...] // I already had the xml loaded in an xmlDocument // so I have to convert to an XmlReader XmlTextReader r = new XmlTextReader(new StringReader(xmlDoc.OuterXml)); XsltArgumentList xslArg = new XsltArgumentList(); xslArg.AddExtensionObject("urn:[...]", new [...]()); xslTransform.Transform(r, xslArg, context.Response.Output); I really don't get what I'm doing wrong. I've checked the interfaces on both XmlReader objects and they implement the required one. Also, BaseUriXmlResolver inherits from XmlUriResolver and the stylesheet is stored locally. The screenshot below is what I get when stepping into the Transform function. First I can see the stylesheet code after stepping through the parameters (on template-match), I get this: If anyone has any idea why it doesn't work or has an alternative way of getting it to work I'd be much obliged :).     When adding a DLL as a reference to an ASP.Net project, VS2008 adds several files to the bin directory. If the DLL is called foo.dll, VS2008 adds foo.dll.refresh, foo.pdb and foo.xml. I know what foo.dll is :-), why does VS2008 add the other three files? What do those three files do? Can I delete them? Do they need to be added in source control?

  • Visual Studio macro to read compilation errors and fix implicit conversions automatically in VB.NET

    I am converting a large project in VB.NET that is using Option Strict Off into Option Strict On Naturally I am running into the same compilation error over and over. Strict On does not allow implicit conversion from Object to String/Integer/Double Is it possible to to access the compilation errors with a macro and automatically append .ToString() to the erroneous implicit conversion.   • How to determine why visual studio might be skipping projects when building a solution

    I am debugging someone else's work and the solution is quite large. When I try to build the entire thing, several projects within the solution don't build and just skip. Viewing the output window during the build process says: 1------ Skipped Rebuild All: Project: pr1lib ------ How can I determine why these builds were skipped? I am unable to find additional output. This is with VS2008 and the solution is comprised of c# and c++ code.

    Is there a way to transfer C++ preprocessor definitions into a custom pre-link step procedure call as a command-line parameter or export them into a file any other way? Example: Let's say, I have a c++ project, and in it's Debug configuration I put a preprocessor definition like MAKUMBA_OBA=0x13 Then I add custom pre-link step which executes some javascript like sarahjessicaparker.js /to tomsrhinoplasty $(MAKUMBA_OBA) It would be great, if it just worked, but I never get a third parameter in my js. So the question is: how to pass a preprocessor definition to s script?

    Is there any way to properly integrate Subversion control into VS2008? I'm currently using the TortoiseSVN shell extensions, but I keep forgetting to check in new files and it's easy to get in a confused mess. On another project I use VS2008 with SourceSafe, and it's really nice having most things automated or controlled simply by using VS in its normal way.

  • Cannot debug in visual studio 2008

    I recently reopened a project and on trying to debug the breakpoint only shows as a red circle and gives the following message "The breakpoint will not currently be hit. No symbols have been loaded for this document" I notice there are no PB files in the bin directory. I presume I need to rebuild the debug files. Does anybody know how to go about this? Any help much appreciated.

    I'm got this project where i'm showing images with a qt5 interface, i'm simply setting the Pixmap of a label with the qimage pixmap The thing is, it's working on a debug build, but not on a release build and i dont understand why. I already got a folder in my .Exe folder named "plugins" and a subfolder in it named "imageformats", and in this folder the file named "qjpeg.dll" So i coming here to see if someone has an idea on why it doesn't work ?   • Elegant way to debug n-tier from Visual Studio

    Just wondering if there is any easy way to start a debugging session that lauches the server and the client by simply pressing F5. As it stands I have to F5 to debug the server, then find the client project and right click-Debug, which is a bit fiddly. Any tips to get this to work more smoothly?
