• We're Back: I'm Here

  After a busy Fall and Winter post-Oracle OpenWorld 2009 Oracle's Application Strategy Blog is back. More on what we've been up to shortly. Me, I'm blogging here for the first time. After nearly 6 years at Oracle working on the Oracle Fusion Middleware business I've recently joined the Oracle Applications team. For me, what's old is new again. Prior to working on applications infrastructure at Oracle...and at BEA Systems before that...I worked at PeopleSoft in a number of roles spanning Enterprise Performance Management, Supply Chain, Public Sector and Financial Services and more. Some of the acronyms are the same, there are (of course) some new ones too. But what I'm really excited about is the intersection of Enterprise Applications and Applications Infrastructure that's happening right now. "Aligning IT with Business Strategy" has been the buzzphrase for longer than we can all remember---but what I've seen over the past 5 months makes me start to believe that it's finally starting to happen.

The aim is to show what Oracle has to offer to various developer groups. As you might guess we specifically are going to be in the Java track. Specifically we are running a lab that will get you to experience Oracle JDeveloper (or OEPE) and will show you how to build an application based on EJB/JSF with Ajax UI. I'm going to be in the upcoming event on May 5th - if you are in the LA area and haven't experienced JDeveloper yet - come in and see what it is all about. Details here.

• Mark Hurd on Oracle's Strategy to Be the Best

  Mark Hurd, President of Oracle, energized a packed audience this Monday morning at OpenWorld with his keynote outlining Oracle’s four-pillar strategy: Be the leader at every level of the technology stack—applications, middleware, database, operating system, virtual machine, servers, and storage Vertically integrate these levels into differentiated solutions Offer Fusion, the next generation of applications, which are modular and can run in the cloud, on-premise, or both (hybrid) Deliver this technology portfolio through industry lenses to help Oracle customers solve their problems while innovating and becoming more efficient. Hurd’s message resonated throughout Monday’s Customer Experience (CX) sessions as we learned about Oracle’s investment in integrating its best-of-breed CX solutions to deliver an end-to-end suite that addresses every part of the customer lifecycle. For example, in the area of customer service, Oracle is developing enhancements to help contact center agents: Better understand customer needs through social listening tools that are integrated with knowledge management Empower themselves with internal collaboration and mobility tools Adapt to customer needs by engaging them through chat during a service or commerce interaction so they can deliver a great customer experience while transforming from a cost- into a profit center.

• Detecting 404 errors after a new site design

  We recently re-designed Developer Fusion and as part of that we needed to ensure that any external links were not broken in the process. In order to monitor this, we used the awesome LogParser tool. All you need to do is open up a command prompt, navigate to the directory with your web site's log files in, and run a query like this: "c:\program files (x86)\log parser 2.2\logparser" "SELECT top 500 cs-uri-stem,count(*) FROM u_ex*.log WHERE sc-status=404 GROUP BY cs-uri-stem order by count(*) desc" -rtp:-1 topMissingUrls.txt And you've got a text file with the top 500 requested URLs that are returning 404. Simple!

• Oracle E-Business Suite 12 Certified on Oracle Linux 6 (x86-64)

  Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12 (12.1.1 and higher) is now certified on 64-bit Oracle Linux 6 with the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel (UEK). New installations of the E-Business Suite R12 on this OS require version 12.1.1 or higher. Cloning of existing 12.1 Linux environments to this new OS is also certified using the standard Rapid Clone process. There are specific requirements to upgrade technology components such as the Oracle Database (to 11.2.0.3) and Fusion Middleware as necessary for use on Oracle Linux 6. These and other requirements are noted in the Installation and Upgrade Notes (IUN) below. • Remove Ubuntu or XP from the Windows 7 Boot Menu

  If you’ve ever used a dual-boot system and then removed one of the operating systems, it can still show up in Windows 7’s boot menu. We’ll show you how to get rid of old entries and speed up the boot process. To edit the boot menu, we will use a program called bcdedit that’s included with Windows 7. There are some third-party graphical applications that will edit the menu, but we prefer to use built-in applications when we can. First, we need to open a command prompt with Administrator privileges. Open the start menu and type cmd into the search box. Right click on the cmd program that shows up, and select Run as administrator. Alternatively, if you’ve disabled the search box, you can find the command prompt in All Programs > Accessories. In the command prompt, type in bcdedit and press enter. A list of the boot menu entries will appear. Find the entry that you would like to delete – in our case, this is the last one, with the description of “Ubuntu”. What we need is the long sequence of characters marked as the identifier. Rather than type it out, we will copy it to be pasted later. Right-click somewhere in the command prompt window and select Mark. By clicking the left mouse button and dragging over the appropriate text, select the identifier for the entry you want to delete, including the left and right curly braces on either end. Press the Enter button. This will copy the text to the clipboard. In the command prompt, type in: bcdedit /delete and then right-click somewhere in the command prompt window and select Paste. Press Enter to input the now completed command. The boot menu entry will now be deleted. Type in bcdedit again to confirm that the offending entry is now gone from the list. If you reboot your machine now, you will notice that the boot menu does not even come up, because there is only one entry in the list (unless you had more than two entries to begin with). You’ve shaved a few seconds off of the boot process! Not to mention the added effort of pressing the enter button. There’s a lot more that you can do with bcdedit, like change the description of boot menu entries, create new entries, and much more. For a list of what you can do with bcdedit, type the following into the Command Window. bcdedit /help While there are third-party GUI solutions for accomplishing the same thing, using this method will save you time by not having to go through the extra steps of installing an extra program. One major and the most obvious difference is between $ and #. JSP 2.1 uses $ and JSF 1.2 uses # in an EL. $ - immediate evaluation# - deferred evaluation$ - $ syntax executes expressions eagerly/immediately, which means that the result is returned immediately when the page renders.# - # syntax defers the expression evaluation to a point defined by the implementing technology. In general, JSF uses deferred EL evaluation because of its multiple lifecycle phases in which events are handled. Oracle Tuxedo Application Runtime for CICS and Batch and Oracle Application Rehosting Workbench provide the ability to automate rehosting of mainframe Online and Batch applications to open systems running under Oracle Tuxedo. • Out of Memory when building an application

  I have quite a major problem with my Multimedia Fusion 2 game. I finished it months ago, however, the only thing keeping me from finally compiling the game into an executable file is this error message that pops up every time I try to, simply saying, "Out of Memory". Its highly frustrating to be halted at this point by this message, and I tried everything I could come up with to fix it including compressing the runtime and sounds and increasing the proity of MMF2 all the way to realtime in the task manager. Im begging someone to toss me a bone on this problem, and any advice at all would be much appreciated.
