  • Why can't I right click on flash videos in Chrome? (Ubuntu 9.10)

    I'm trying to change the "quality" to low of a Hulu video so I can full screen it with out it being choppy but right click does nothing. When I right click in firefox it brings up a menu. I'm running Chrome on Ubuntu 9.10, is any one else having this issue I tried Google and got nothing back. I use chrome as my main browser, I have to switch to firefox every time I watch Hulu videos. Is there another way I cant change the quality of the flash video in Chrome?

  • How to verify that a physical volume is encrypted? (Ubuntu 10.04 w/ LUKS)

    I am very new to LUKS. During installation, I tried to set up an encrypted physical volume so that everything underneath it would be encrypted. I chose "Use as: physical volume for encryption," the installation completed and I have a working environment. How can I verify that the PV is indeed encrypted? I was never prompted to provide a passphrase, so I most likely missed a step somewhere. At the end of the day, I'd like whole disk encryption if that's possible, so I don't have to worry about which parts of the file system are encrypted and which aren't. If I did miss something, do I have to start over and try again, or can it be done (relatively easily?) after the fact? I would prefer not to introduce more complexity by using TrueCrypt, etc. Environment details: The drives are md raid1. One volume group. A standard boot lv. An encrypted swap lv using a random key (which seems to be working fine). Thank you in advance for your help. This is very much a learn-as-I-go experience.

  • Turning a (dual boot) Ubuntu 9 into a virtual machine

    I have a dual boot box (Ubuntu 9 and Vista) and I'm about to upgrade Vista to Win 7. Being Ubuntu my main development environment, I'd like to use it as it is from the new environment via VirtualBox or VMWare. I know tools like clonezilla that backup entire drives; in my case, the linux partitions are distributed between several disks which in turn contain both linux and windows data. My intention is to use some backup tool (like Clonezilla if it fits) that allows me to ONLY backup the linux partitions distributed in several disks. Any hints ? Thanks in advance.

  • Ubuntu server 10.04 disconnects after short periods of inactivity on my site

    Hi! I'm new to Ubuntu (installed it for the first time just a couple of days ago on my server). I've Ubuntu Server 10.04 and am just using the terminal, no GUI like Gnome. So far it's working pretty great except for one big thing. Whenever I go to sleep and there's no activity on my server (it's not a big site so active users drop to 0 during the night), the server kind of disconnects. The only thing that can bring the site back online is to restart the whole server. I've tried disabling powersaving by using setterm but that changes nothing. Even if I wake up the server by pressing any key or so the site wont go back online! I've tried just restarting both Apache and MySQL (I'm using LAMP-server btw) but not even that works. But as soon as I turn the power off and on at the server, everythings work like normal for a couple of minutes of inactivity (~5-15 minutes I'd guess) and then it's down again unless someone logs in to the site and is active. I was previously using XAMPP on my laptop with Windows XP and that worked 24/7 so I don't think it's anything with my router or ISP. This is driving me crazy! My site is down all the time I'm in school as I have no possibility to restart the server if it becomes offline. Does anyone have a clue to what could be wrong?

  • Compiz and Desktop Effects on Netbook with External Monitor

    I have an Acer Aspire One AO150 and am having trouble plugging in an external monitor under Ubuntu 9.10. There were no problems under 9.04. If I plug in an external monitor once the machine is already up, then bring up the 'display' application to activate it, it basically hangs. There are no problem under these circumstances if I have desktop effects turned off. I've seen a few mentions of this problem on the Ubuntu forums, but never a solid solution. Any ideas? A few more details after a question below. The machine does not respond to its keyboard commands to switch to an external monitor, nor does it respond to Ctrl-Alt-F1, etc to switch out of X. The pointer is visible on the monitors (at the edge of each) and is frozen as a 'busy' cursor, but with no animation. The kernel does respond to SysReq commands (REISUB). In the latest attempt I had the external monitor active earlier, then removed it and activated desktop effects. Upon plugging in the eternal monitor then bringing up the display application, it hangs.

  • VirtualBox running Ubuntu 11.10 in Win7 is suddenly way too slow

    For two months I've been running Ubuntu 11.10 64bits in VirtualBox 4.1.12r77245 but today everything has been really slow, freezing all the time. I've had to restart the VM about 7 times already because Ubuntu just freezed in the middle of a task. I'm using my laptop, it's a LG P420 i5 with 4gb ram. I don't know if it could be an update of Ubuntu or VB, but I really need it to work. Any guesses? Thanks in advance

  • How to switch users without entering password, part II

    I've got Ubuntu 9.10 with a user account for my wife, and one for myself. "Wake-from-screensaver" should result in "choose user" without having to enter any password. I know how to do that in Windows, but I'm not good with Linux (yet). Part of this was answered in this question which helped me get past the login screen without passwords (after booting, and after choosing "switch user"), but once the screensaver kicks in and I wake it up again, the system does not present the "choose user" screen. Instead, it either turns off the screensaver and presents the desktop of the most recent user, or (if the screensaver is set to lock the screen) prompt for the user's password (which can be handily surpassed by clicking the "switch user" button and choosing the same user again). So, the login ("choose user") screen has been dealt with. How do I make the (any) screensaver return to the login screen at wake, rather than to the current user's desktop? Windows can do this, I'm sure Linux can too - but how?

  • Hard Reset USB in Ubuntu 10.04

    I have a USB device (a modem) that is really finicky. Sometimes it works fine, but other times it refuses to connect. The only solution I have found to fix it once it gets into a bad state is to physically unplug the device and plug it back in. However, I don't always have physical access to the machine it is plugged in on, so I'm looking for a way to do this through the command line. This post suggests running: $ sudo modprobe -w -r usb_storage; sudo modprobe usb_storage However I get an "unknown option -w" output. This slightly modified command: $ sudo modprobe -r usb_storage Fails with the message FATAL: Module usb_storage is in use. If I try to kill -9 the processes marked [usb-storage] before running they refuse to die (I think because they are deeply tied to the kernel). Anyone know of a way to do this? NOTE: I cross-posted this on serverfault as I didn't know which was more appropriate. I will delete and/or link whichever one is answered first.

  • How can I view my remote desktop that is on a subnet

    I have my ubuntu machine at work and I'd like to use remote desktop to work from home. However the remote machine is on a subnet and not directly connected to the internet. I am able to remotely connect through ssh to a server, from which I then ssh to my remote machine. This has been beneficial, however I am currently working on a GUI application so just the command line doesn't work so well. Any ideas? I have tried using ssh with the -X flag on both sessions, but this doesn't work. I am trying to connect from Windows Vista through a Mac server (isn't it a great setup?).

    I'm new to Ubuntu. I'm having a wireless network problem in Ubuntu 11.10. I made a hotspot using Connectify from a computer which is running Windows 7. I can access it in Windows 7 but not in Ubuntu 11.10. Every time I access it,I get a message "disconnected". I'm using msi fx 400 notebook with Intel Centrino wireless -N 1000 wireless card.     I am a bit confused with the abundant tcpdump tutorials on internet. I am having a few of the virtual machines running on a virtualization server.Where I am debugging a problem.Port 53 is the one in problem. I have a bridged setup where out of 4 LAN cards on the machine in question one is active and it is xen-br0 I want to check if there is any request coming on port 53 on the server by other machines on LAN in question. I also want to see if the guest operating systems on LAN or any other machine is sending traffic at port 53.Due to abundant messages being generated via tcpdump I am finding it difficult to grep the output at desired port. So how can I use it if some one can give an example that would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

At the point where the network hardware is auto-detected, however, it fails to find hardware and displays a message, "No network interfaces detected". To make a long story short, I don't care if it can detect my network interface. How do I do one of the following: Skip that step alltogether. Handle the error page automagically. PS.     I have been following this Tutorial to get dual monitors working on my box http://www.dwasifar.com/?p=862&cpage=1#comment-5727 It works! However, when ever I move a window, the redraw of that window takes 3-8 seconds. Even moving the window takes the same amount of time Is this being done in software rather than the nVidea hardware? The windows themselves do not respond. I have seen a few old threads but no relevant fixes - If anyone could suggest a fix I would very much appreciate it. I have tried: sudo nvidea-xconfig sudo nvidia-settings Then configure TwinView go to save the config... and the error unable to parse xorg.conf file and the error in the console VALIDATION ERROR: Data incomplete in file /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Undefined Device "null" referenced by Screen "Configured Screen Device" Segmentation fault
