• Avoiding "double" subscriptions

  I am working on a website that requires a bit of marketing; let me explain. This website is offering a single, say, iTunes 50$ voucher to a lucky winner. To be entered in the draw, you need to invite (and has to join) at least one friend to the website. Pretty straightforward. Now, of course it would be easy for anyone to just create a fake account and invite that account so, I was thinking of some other way to somehow find out of possible cheating. I was thinking of an IP check on the newly subscribed (invited) user, and if there is the same IP logged in the last 24 hours, and if that's the case, investigate more about it. But I was thinking that maybe there is a more clever way around this issue. Has anyone ever though about this? What other solutions did you try? Thanks in advance.

• Building Enterprise Smartphone App &ndash; Part 2: Platforms and Features

  This is part 2 in a series of posts based on a talk I gave recently at the Chicago Information Technology Architects Group.  Feel free to leave feedback. In the previous post I discussed what reasons a company might have for creating a smartphone application.  In this installment I will cover some of history and state of the different platforms as well as features that can be leveraged for building enterprise smartphone applications. Platforms Before you start choosing a platform to develop your solutions on it is good to understand how we got here and what features you can leverage. History To my memory we owe all of this to a product called the Apple Newton that came out in 1987. It was the first PDA and back then I was much more of an Apple fan.  I was very impressed with this device even though it never really went anywhere.  The Palm Pilot by US Robotics was the next major advancement in PDA. It had a simple short hand window that allowed for quick stylus entry.. Later, Windows CE came out and started the broadening of the PDA market. After that it was the Palm and CE operating systems that started showing up on cell phones and for some time these were the two dominant operating systems that were distributed with devices from multiple hardware vendors. Current The iPhone was the first smartphone to take away the stylus and give us a multi-touch interface.  It was a revolution in usability and really changed the attractiveness of smartphones for the general public.  This brought us to the beginning of the current state of the market with the concept of an online store that makes it easy for customers to get new features and functionality on demand. With Android, Google made this more than a one horse race.  Not only did they come to compete, their low cost actually made them the leading OS.  Of course what made Android so attractive also is its major fault.  It is so open that it has been a target for malware which leaves consumers exposed.  Fortunately for Google though, most consumers aren’t aware of the threat that they are under. Although Microsoft had put out one of the first smart phone operating systems with CE it had to play catch up and finally came out with the Windows Phone.  They have gone for a market approach between those of iOS and Android.  They support multiple hardware vendors like Google, but they kept a certification process for applications that is similar to Apple.  They also created a user interface that was different enough to give it a clear separation from the other two platforms. The result of all this is hundreds of millions of smartphones being sold monthly across all three platforms giving us a wide range of choices and challenges when it comes to developing solutions. Features So what are the features that make these devices flexible enough be considered for use in the enterprise? The biggest advantage of today's devices is network connectivity.  The ability to access information from multiple sources at a moment’s notice is critical for businesses.  Add to that the ability to communicate over a variety of text, voice and video modes and we have a powerful starting point. Every smartphone has a cameras and they are not just useful for posting to Instagram. We are seeing more applications such as Bing vision that allow us to scan just about any printed code or text to find information.  These capabilities have been made available to developers in the form of standard libraries for reading barcodes of just about an flavor and optical character recognition (OCR) interpretation. Bluetooth give us the ability to communicate with multiple devices. Whether these are headsets, keyboard or printers the wireless communication capabilities are just starting to evolve.  The more these wireless communication protocols grow, the more opportunities we will see to transfer data between users and a variety of devices. Local storage of information that can be called up even when the device cannot reach the network is the other big capability.  This give users the ability to work offline as well and transmit information when connections are restored. These are the tools that we have to work with to build applications that can be leveraged to gain a competitive advantage for companies that implement them. • What are my options for Web 2.0 gallery software?

  Good day everyone! This is my first post on this site ^_^ My question is: What are my options if I need a Web 2.0 gallery software that work in a very similar manner to this removed web site. Essentially: users can create account, then create and manage their own galleries. And all other users and guests can see these galleries, add tags, comments, etc. Basically a community driven gallery web site. When it comes to "normal" cms I know a lot of good options, but I never worked with any gallery management software... If you can suggest me some good solutions (free) it would be great! Also: If you by any chance know what software is used at this removed website it would be even better, because this solution suits me the best and I would have used this engine, but I cant find any information on what this engine is and if it is even public, or privately developed thing. • What Application Indicators are available?

  I installed Ubuntu 11.04 on one of my systems and I am using the Unity interface. Unity is working quite well so far but I really miss panel applets for net speed, cpu temp, and system monitor. These applets are useful for viewing quick info. Unlike 10.10, there is no other way to get this info onto the panel or unity launcher. There are solutions like screenlets and conky but they don't feel appropriate for a clean desktop look. If you know one then please list out any third party indicators with links so that they can be found.

• Prevent azure subdomain indexation

  Let me explain my situation, I have an azure website (with azurewebsites.net sub domain), and a custom domain.com, built with asp.net MVC Both are being indexed by Google, but I've noticed the custom domain is being penalized and it doesn't show up in results, it only shows when I search for "site:domain.com" I want to remove and block the azurewebsites.net subdomain from Google. I've read the "possible" solutions: Adding robots.txt: won't work, because the subdomain and the domain are the exact same content, so subdomain.azures.net/robots.txt will lead to domain.com/robots.txt, removing the domain as well. Adding the tag, is the same situation as the previous point. I'm using a CNAME register to redirect the domain to the subdomain, so I can't redirect to a sub directory. Do you have any other ideas?

  I have applied to couple of startups and most of them are asking to solve programming challenge before they start on the interviewing candidate. I have submitted couple of the solutions and all the time getting rejected in the initial screening. Now what I think is, they will see my coding style, algorithm and OOD concepts that I have used to solve the problem. Can you guys input more on it as what other details are taken into consideration and how can I improve my coding for getting selected. By the way, I did all my coding in either Java/Perl. EDIT I feel the biggest reason for rejection is code didn't work for couple of use cases.

• Stop myself from over-complicating applications

  Recently I worked on a fairly large project involving C# and MVVM. This application had around 160 projects in the solutions each seprarated into their own layers. As I have been working on this application for almost a year, building it from scratch as part of a team, I am now coming off that project and onto smaller more trivial projects. As I was beginning to develop a small in-house tool I found myself trying to mimic the larger applications structure and layering but in the end I just had a simple application with several DLLs which I know I wouldn't have done if I had not worked on that larger application before. I am just wondering if there are any techniques I can utilise to stop myself from turning a "code-behind" style trivial application into a full blown MVVM application? Or should I continue developing as I am and try to keep the unnecessary fluff out of the project?

• How to divide hex grid evenly among n players?

  I'm making a simple hex-based game, and I want the map to be divided evenly among the players. The map is created randomly, and I want the players to have about equal amount of cells, with relatively small areas. For example, if there's four players and 80 cells in the map, each of the players would have about 20 cells (it doesn't have to be spot-on accurate). Also, each player should have no more than four adjacent cells. That is to say, when the map is generated, the biggest "chunks" cannot be more than four cells each. I know this is not always possible for two or three players (as this resembles the "coloring the map" problem), and I'm OK with doing other solutions for those (like creating maps that solve the problem instead). But, for four to eight players, how could I approach this problem? As always, any and all help is appreciated. :)

• How to get rid of crawling errors due to the URL Encoded Slashes (%2F) problem in Apache

  The Google web crawler has indexed a whole set of URLs with encoded slashes (%2F) for our site. I assume it has picked up the pages from our XML sitemap file. The problem is that the live pages will actually result in a failure because of the Url Encoded Slashes Problem in Apache. Some solutions are mentioned here We are implementing a 301 redirect scheme for all the error pages. This should make the Google bot delete the pages from the crawling errors (no more crashing pages). Does implementing the 301s require the pages to be "live"? In that case we may be forced to implement solution 1 in the article. The problem is that solution 1 will pose a security vulnerability..

• Trouble updating metapackage

  I'm having trouble downloading xfce4 metapackage. I don't have a desktop yet just cmd line and this is my first time on linux. sudo apt-get install xfce4 brings back Unable to locate package xfce4 Does that with all packages, leads me to sudo apt-get update Leaves me with temporary failure resolving 'downloads-distro.mongodb.org' Read some solutions to fix this but it had me going in circles with no avail. Need to get this working from cmd prompt. So I'm having trouble updating and am lost here without a desktop client. If anyone can help that would be great.

• I`ve got some problems with new Acer Aspire S3

  I just got a new Acer Aspire S3 Laptop, and I've installed Ubuntu on it. Here is some problems: 1. Bluetooth (AR3012) can't find any devices. rfkill shows that everything is fine, but I still can't connect to any device. (Maybe it was turned off in stock windows?) 2. Can't change screen brightness (I've tried Timex's solution with new 3.2-rc kernel and some grub options, touchpad works fine,but I still can`t use Fn+Right/Left) 3. 720p video in all players(VLC, mplayer and totem) works wrong. I found some similar problems on intel video chips with vblank sync or something like that. Video plays as it should, but i always see a line which appears on action scenes (looks like some parts of a screen updates faster) Maybe there are some solutions from similar laptops that I can find? PS I've tried ubuntu 11.04 with old kernel and linux mint 12-rc with 3.2-rc2 kernel.
