• Online Collaborative Schema Design (leverage google docs?)

  I'm looking for an online, collaborative schema designer. It's important that it can handle revisions (history of changes). This looks cool, and I could host it on a server - but doesn't look like it would handle multi-user: http://ondras.zarovi.cz/sql/demo/ Currently we're doing a lot of design collaboration on google docs/spreadsheets. Has anyone had any success using google spreadsheet for schema design? Even if there were just a gadget for drawing lines/connections, I might give Google Docs a shot.

• WPF: Editable ComboBox; how to make search/auto-fill functionality case sensitive?

  Say I have a ComboBox, like so: <ComboBox IsEditable="True" Height="30"> <ComboBoxItem>robot</ComboBoxItem> <ComboBoxItem>Robot</ComboBoxItem> </ComboBox> If a user comes along and starts by typing a lower-case 'r' into that ComboBox when it is empty, the ComboBox predictably auto-fills itself with the word 'robot'. Great. Now the same user comes along and starts typing an upper-case 'R' into that ComboBox when it is again empty. Unpredictable, the ComboBox auto-fills itself with the lower-case word 'robot'. Not great. I desperately want it to auto-fill itself with 'Robot', but WPF does not seem to want to smile down upon me. No matter what you do (CAPS lock, shift+key), the ComboBox will always auto-fill with the lower case 'robot', provided that the lower case 'robot' precedes the upper case 'Robot' in the ComboBox's items collection. Is there any way to prevent this? This behavior is maddening and makes for an absolutely abysmal user experience.

  End user documentation on how to use applications is an important part of the user experience of applications, irrespective of whether they are winforms, wpf or even asp applications. In a startup or internal development team situation, where there isn't a dedicated documentation department, it can take a lot of resources to maintain screen shots and associated user documentation, such as on-line help or even printable manuals. What tools are available to assist in creating screenshots of all the "screens" within an application (be they winforms, wpf or aspx) to help automate the capture of screen shots, and associating with the relevant documentation? In addiiton, are there any that allow automation of annotations of a particular control (so use cases like: Draw a red box around the Username control with a callout to say "This is where you'd enter your user name, in the form '[email protected]'")?

• jQuery ajax not preloading images

  I have a list of galleries, when you click on the title of a gallery it pulls in the contents (HTML with images). When the content is pulled in it preloads the html but not the images, any ideas? • What are some of best Javascript memory detecting tools?

  Our team is faced with slow but serious Javascript memory leak. We have read up on the normal causes for memory leaks in Javascript (eg. closures and circular references). We tried to avoid those pitfalls in the code but it likely we still have unknown mistakes left in our code. I started my search for available tools but would like input from people with actual experience with these tools. Some of the tools I found so far (but have no idea how good and useful they would be for our problem): Sieve Drip JavaScript Memory Leak Detector Our search is not limited to free tools, it will be a bonus, but more importantly something that will get the job done. • Graphical database monitoring tool for debugging

  I would love a tool that in real-time showed changes in a set of predefined tables in a graphical way, for example different colors on fields that has changed value, added records, deleted records etc. I don't want a list of all transactions (like SQL Server Profiler), instead a clever visualized more graphical approach where you can get a great overview if you are just monitoring a few tables. I realize the visualization would be hard if there is a lot of transactions against the database, but with monitoring on a few tables and a single session during debugging it would be possible. Does something like this exist? I think it would be great for debugging! Preferably for SQL Server and/or MySQL.

• What are the preferred documentation tools for the major programming languages?

  I'm interested in compiling a list of major programming languages and their preferred documentation toolsets. To scope this a bit: The exact structure of the answer may vary from language to language, but there appear to be two aspects common to all languages: (1) in-code syntax for documentation, and (2) documentation generators that make use of said syntax. There are also cases where generators are used independent of code. For example, tutorial-style documentation is common in the Python world and is often disconnected from underlying code. Many languages have multiple commonly-used documentation strategies and tool chains, and I'd love to capture this. Finally, there are cross-language tools like Doxygen that also have some traction and would be worth noting here. Here are some obvious target languages to start with: Python, Ruby, Java, C#, PHP, Objective-C, C/C++, Haskell, Erlang, Scala, Clojure If this question catches on, I'll try and keep this section updated with the most recent list. • jQuery selector help - Can I generate a selector from clicking on an element?

  Hi All, I have jQuery, FireFox, Firebug, IE, and IE developer toolbar. When I am examing a page with either FireBug or IE Dev toolbar, I am able to click on an element and it shows me in the dom where the element is etc... Is there anyway to transform that selection into a valid jQuery selector? I know I can use ID, classes, and element relative to other elements etc... but what about when I am looking at some random table cell that doesn't have a class or id etc.. Can I generate a selector on the fly like that? I thought for sure there was. Any thoughts or ideas are always appreciated Thanks, ~ck in San Diego

  Given a class like System.Timers.Timer, or ANY managed class (whether user defined, from the .net framework, or some 3rd party library) is there some program I can use to (a) generate an interface based on this class and (b) generate a wrapper for the given class? for example if I have a public class Foo { public object MyProperty { get { ... } set { ... } } public int SomeMethod(object a) { ... } } it will create an interface interface IFoo { object MyProperty { get; set; } int SomeMethod(object a) { ... } } and maybe even a wrapper class FooWrap { // something for relay constructor here ... Foo _me; public object MyProperty { get { return _me.MyProperty; } set { _me.MyProperty = value; } } public int SomeMethod(object a) { return _me.SomeMethod(); } } Obviously there's stuff I haven't thought about like events, generics etc. I want a DWIMNWIS-PSICHTO(-Plus-Stuff-I-Clearly-Haven't-Thought-Of). I'm aware resharper can be used to extract an interface but I've only been able to use this on my own classes. Aside: Wow, it is amazing how simply becoming accustomed to a previously 'unacceptable' idea eventually gives it legitimacy. A year ago the idea of having to create interfaces for all objects I want to mock and adopting an injection framework would have seemed like the height of madness. It turns out that while it's not quite death and taxes, it is sparta. I am aware of and have used typemock. It certainly is the work of elvish wizards. One day when $800 does not seem like quite so much money I intend to buy it.

  My open source Android application has internationalization done the Android way, with strings.xml files. The community has many people from many countries, and they are willing to contribute/improve translations using a collaborative website. There is Launchpad but it only supports the gettext format so we would have to use scripts, not very convenient. There is Crowdin but somehow this website seems dead, nearly no projects, and the download links do not work. Actually we started using Crowdin but all download links fail to give any strings.xml file back, see here. What website is convenient for translating open source Android applications?

• Any universal notification service like Adobe Wave

  Any ideas for an universal notification service like Adobe Wave? I need to send status updates (more specifically, things like document change notifications and the like). I could stick to RSS but then I will need either long URLs or HTTP authentications on feeds which not all the clients like. Adobe Wave looked promising but they are only desktop, in BETA, without active development, and seem a bit buggy sometimes. Any other ideas?

• Seeking a GUI auto-format feature for T-SQL

  Is there a freely available GUI tool that will allow interaction with Microsoft SQL Server (via T-SQL) that provides an auto-format feature? I constantly find myself writing queries in SQL Query Analyzer (Microsoft’s standard GUI tool for T-SQL) and cutting/pasting the whole thing into SQLyog (a GUI tool for MySQL), where I can press F12 and have it reformatted into an easily readable, industry standard format. I then cut/paste this back into Query Analyzer to execute. I do this all the time at work and haven’t been able to find an alternative. I realize that SQLyog is no longer free software, but what I’m looking for is a specific alternative to a MS SQL Server interface (with auto-formatting). Thanks in advance for your help.

  In the software world, it seems to me that SCM is an unfortunately overloaded acronym. It can mean:- Source Code Management Software Configuration Management Which one of these is the dominant term? Do they mean the same thing? To me Source Code Management is essentially synonymous with Version Control. Whereas Software Configuration Management is a larger subject, which potentially includes Build and Release Management as well. However looking on Wikipedia, it lists Subversion as a Software Configuration Management tool, which is at most only tangentially true. Build and Software Management has come up before, but nothing definitive has been said on the matter, unfortunately.

  Many computer science curricula include a class or at least a lecture on disasters caused by software bugs, such as the Therac-25 incidents or Ariane 5 Flight 501. Indeed, Wikipedia has a list of software bugs with serious consequences, and a question on StackOverflow addresses some of them too. We study the failures of the past so that we don't repeat them, and I believe that rather than ignoring them or excusing them, it's important to look at these failures squarely and remind ourselves exactly how the mistakes made by people in our profession cost real money and real lives. By studying failures caused by uncaught bugs and bad process, we learn certain lessons about rigorous testing and accountability, and we make sure that our innocent mistakes are caught before they cause major problems. There are kinds of less innocent failure in software engineering, however, and I think it's just as important to study the serious consequences caused by programmers motivated by malice, greed, or just plain amorality. Thus we can learn about the ethical questions that arise in our profession, and how to respond when we are faced with them ourselves. Unfortunately, it's much harder to find lists of these failures--the only one I can come up with is that apocryphal "DOS ain't done 'til Lotus won't run" story. For example, a + b * c into a + (b * c) Those who paid more attention in math class might be able to tackle order of operations for huge equations in their head, but I could often use some help (and verification of my thinking). I often encounter other people's libraries having equations and functions I need for my code, and this would be kind of helpful for debugging and understanding. • Where does C# and the .NET Framework fail?

  In my non-programming life, I always attempt to use the approprite tool for the job, and I feel that I do the same in my programming life, but I find that I am choosing C# and .NET for almost everything. I'm finding it hard to come up with (realistic business) needs that cannot be met by .NET and C#. Obviously embedded systems might require something less bloated than the .NET Micro Framework, but I'm really looking for line of business type situations where .NET is not the best tool. I'm primarly a C# and .NET guy since its what I'm the most comfertable in, but I know a fair amount of C++, php, VB, powershell, batch files, and Java, as well as being versed in the web technologes (javascript, html/css). But I'm open minded about it my skill set and I'm looking for cases where C# and .NET are not the right tool for the job. The bottom line here, is that I feel that I'm choosing C# and .NET simply because I am very comfertable with it, so I'm looking for cases where you have chosen something other than .NET, even though you are primarly a .NET developer.
