• Squid, NTLM, Windows 7 and IE8

  I'm running Squid 2.7-stable4, Samba 3 and the Windows 7 RC with IE8. I have NTLM authentication setup on my squid proxy server and it works fine for every combination of browser and Windows (including IE8 on XP and Firefox on Win7), but it doesn't work (keeps asking for authentication) for IE8 on Windows 7. I can get it to work using the LmCompatibilityLevel registry hack, but I'd really prefer to get it working on the server. Does anyone have any experience with this? Or know where to start looking? The samba logs don't reveal much. • Rendering a WPF Network Map/Graph layout - Manual? PathListBox? Something Else?

  I'm writing code to present the user with a simplified network map. At any given time, the map is focused on a specific item... say a router or a server. Based on the focused item, other network entities are grouped into sets (i.e. subnets or domains) and then rendered around the focused item. Lines would represent connections and groups would be visually grouped inside a rectangle or ellipse. Panning and zooming are required features. An item can be selected to display more information in a "properties" style window. An item could also be double-clicked to re-focus the entire network map on that item. At that point, the entire map would be re-calculated. I am using MVVM without any framework, as of yet. Assume the logic for grouping items and determining what should be shown or not is all in place. I'm looking for the best way to approach the UI layout. So far, I'm aware of the following options: Use a canvas for layout (inside a ScrollViewer to handle the panning). Have my ViewModel make use of a Layout Manager type of class, which would handle assigning all the layout properties (Top, Left, etc.). Bind my set of display items to an ItemsControl and use Data Templates to handle the actual rendering. The drawbacks with this approach: Highly manual layout on my part. Lots of calculation. I have to handle item selection manually. Computation of connecting lines is manual. The Pros of this approach: I can draw additional lines between child subnets as appropriate (manually). Additional LayoutManagers could be added later to render the display differently. This could probably be wrapped up into some sort of a GraphLayout control to be re-used. Present the focused item at the center of the display and then use a PathListBox for layout of the additional items. Have my ViewModel expose a simple list of things to be drawn and bind them to the PathListBox. Override the ListBoxItem Template to also create a line geometry from the borders of the focused item (tricky) to the bound item. Use DataTemplates to handle the case where the item being bound is a subnet, in which case we would use another PathListBox in the template to display items inside the subnet. The drawbacks with this approach: Selected Item synchronization across multiple `PathListBox`es. Only one item on the whole graph can be selected at a time, but each child PathListBox maintains its own selection. Also, subnets cannot be selected, but would be selectable without additional work. Drawing the connecting lines is going to be a bit of trickery in the ListBoxItem template, since I need to know the correct side of the focused item to connect to. The pros of this approach: I get to stay out of the layout business, more. I'm looking for any advice or thoughts from others who have encountered similar issues or who have more WPF experience than I. I'm using WPF 4, so any new tricks are legal and encouraged.

• Rails HABTM accepts_nested_attributes_for mapping table

  Currently I have a habtm relationship between a datastream (stream), and a chart. I want to be able to use the 'typical' jquery "add new stream" method to add a new entry into a mapping table that holds the chart_id, and stream_id.. But I think that most examples out there are made to handle a one to many relationship.. The functionality provided here by Ryan Bates is what I'm looking for, But I dont want to use checkboxes, I want to use a select (drop down) to add new items to the mapping table. • How do I generate a core dump from apache

  I have a script which intermittently returns a white screen of death in firefox and Error 324 (net::ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE): Unknown error. chrome. When I try to access the script using a PHP HTTP client (like Zend_Http_Client), intermittently I get an exception (sorry I don't have the exact message on me at the moment). I suspect a segfault. This is further buttressed by the lines in my error log that look like this: [Thu Mar 18 16:03:02 2010] [notice] child pid 845 exit signal Segmentation fault (11) Now, I'm running RedHat, and I know that RedHat doesn't generate core dumps out-of-the-box. I followed the instructions here http://kbase.redhat.com/faq/docs/DOC-5353, but I'm not seeing any core dumps. How do I generate a core dump?

• Why don't SCOM R2 web console performance views load?

  I am using AWS RDS with MySQL for a project and have a "large" instance. The documentation is clear on what this means as far as compute resources and RAM goes, but I can't find anything that documents how many open database connections that I can have. The app that I am using is PHP and it utilizes PDO with persistent connections. This means that the number of open connections could reach the maximum number of PHP child processes running at any given point. How do I ensure that my RDS instance has a max connections setting high enough to be comfortable with this?

  Hi all, I have a VPS with 768 MB RAM and a 1.13 GHZ processor. I run a php/mysql dating site and the performance is excellent and server load is generally very low. Sometimes I place ads on Facebook and at peak times I can get 100-150 clicks within a few seconds - this causes the server to run out of memory : Cannot allocate memory: couldn't create child process: /opt/suphp/sbin/suphp .... And all users receive an error 500 page. I am just wondering if this sounds reasonable or not - to me 100-150 does not seem to be a number that should cause apache to run out of memory. Any advice/recommendations how to diagnose the issue highly appreciated.

  Hi we have an mp4 file on our web server in a virtual directory When we try to access the file we get prompted for a username/password. When I tried to change the path of the virtual directory I got the message 'The following child nodes also define the value of the "UNCPassword" property, which overrides the value you have just set ...' which included the mp4 file that we try to access. How can I remove the UNC Password securing the file? The file is not on a shared drive its on the same drive as the web site root. The funny thing is the path of the virtual directory is not a UNC path it's a full path on the same server d:.....

• How to Access a descendant object's internal method in C#

  I'm trying to access a method that is marked as internal in the parent class (in its own assembly) in an object that inherits from the same parent. Let me explain what I'm trying to do... I want to create Service classes that return IEnumberable with an underlying List to non-Service classes (e.g. the UI) and optionally return an IEnumerable with an underlying IQueryable to other services. I wrote some sample code to demonstrate what I'm trying to accomplish, shown below. The example is not real life, so please remember that when commenting. I know that I can add a new internal GetAll method to each service (or perhaps an intermediary parent class within the same assembly) so that each child service within the assembly can see each other's method; but it seems unnecessary since the functionality is already available in the parent class. For example: internal IEnumerable<Employees> GetAll(bool returnIQueryable) { return base.GetAll(returnIQueryable); } Essentially what I want is for services to be able to access other service methods as IQueryable so that they can further refine the uncommitted results, while everyone else gets plain old lists. Any ideas? EDIT You know what, I had some fun playing a little code golf with this... but ultimately I wouldn't be able to use this scheme anyway because I pass interfaces around, not classes. So in my example GetAll(bool returnIQueryable) would not be in the interface, meaning I'd have to do casting, which goes against what I'm trying to accomplish. I'm not sure if I had a brain fart or if I was just too excited trying to get something that I thought was neat to work. Either way, thanks for the responses.

  My Apache 2.2 (preform MPM) is hanging when MaxClients is reached, rather than queueing up requests and serving them when child processes become free. When this happens, the web server is totally unresponsive until it is manually restarted. The server stack is Ubuntu 8, MySQL 5, PHP 5. Hardware is Dual Xeons (2.8) with 2GB of RAM. It serves 30,000 - 50,000 pageviews per day. Static images, CSS, and JS are offloaded to a separate server and PHP is cached using eAccelerator. The HTML output of many pages is cached to the filesystem.   Lately I have been receiving a lot of segmentation fault warnings on my web-server. The warnings look like: [notice] child pid xxxx exit signal Segmentation fault (11) I have consulted with the server provider (it is a dedicated redhat enterprise server) and they could not find anything. What I have done so far: Since the error I have already tried the following: I have added more ram I have turned off / turned on several php modules (they sent me to a web-page someone had the same problem, caused by an excessive amount of php modules) At the moments the warnings occur, there seems to be plenty of free ram left and the number of processes is very low (the number of httpd processes is about a quarter of the maximum allowed). What can be causing these errors? Edit: current versions apache: 2.0.52 php: 5.2.8 RHEL 4 Edit 2: Although I asked this a long time ago, I never was able to solve it until I upgraded to php 5.3.

• Cannot create a new domain in an existing active directory forest

  I have a domain controller setup on Windows Server 2008 R2 (Forest) and I have another Windows Server 2008 R2 (New Domain) and I want to create a new domain in an existing forest. I get the following error: An Active Directory domain controller for the domain mackdev.mackenziecarr.com could not be contacted The error was "no records found for the given DNS query" The query was for the SRV record for: _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.mackdev.mackenziecarr.com I've seem to have tried everything even tried adding this record to the DNS server of the primary forest. I even successfully joined this server to the domain without any issues but trying to create a new domain under the existing forest is no luck. The primary forest I.P. address is 192.168.2.20 the server that I am using to try to make a child domain is 192.168.2.21 My ipconfig are as follows: I.P. Address: 192.168.2.21 Subnetmask: 255.255.255.0 Gateway: 192.168.2.1 Primary DNS: 192.168.2.20

• Memory usages in Linux drops frequently

  I run a CentOS 5.6 (64bit) machine that has Nginx (latest version) running, with php-fpm (latest version). Things run very well, but since about 2 weeks I noticed in my Munin graphs that about every 2 hours the 'cache' usages drops. Before it used be a steady fully graph, that didn't seem to reset every so often. PHP-FPM settings: pm.max_children = 300 daemonize = yes pm = static listen = /tmp/fpm.sock pm.max_requests = 1000 I have checked the php-fpm.log, and about once per 5 seconds a child process is killed, and restarted. But this is all the time, so this does not explain the sudden drops. I only run Nginx, PHP (via fpm), Munin and vsftpd on this machine. No crons run at exactly the time of the drops. My question: What could be causing these drops in cache usage?

• Blocking password policy (expiry) for a particular OU in AD

  Hey SF Folks, Situation is this: I need to have a particular container in my AD environment which blocks password expiry policy, but accepts all other policies. Is this something that would work by simply adding in a GPO at the sub-ou level (the ou in question is a child of ou's where GPO's including password stuff is set). These accounts (and this ou) already exist and will have the default domain policy as well as other policies applied and they should continue to receive policy settings as per those GPO's, with the exception of the Password Expiry. We have tried the password do not expire tickbox and that seems not to have worked. Thanks in advance. Kip

  Hi. I got a windows server 2008 where I host a site, now I decided to have the email on google apps. I did add the MX records I get from them to my DNS settings on the server but with no luck. I recently started doing server stuff so I did like this. Server Manager / Roles / DNS Server / DNS / SERVERNAME / MYDOMAIN / Forward Lookup / New MX Host or child domain: What goes here? FQDN: here is my domain name, i think because I named the ns my domain? FQDN MX: here is the google MX record I got from them MSP: 10 I have no Idea where I go wrong but I thought I would ask you guys if any of you can maybe give me some tips on what to look for or any newbee mistake I do that you see from this little info. • Serial number not found, copy of Windows not genuine

  I have an HP-G71-340US notebook that I purchased 11/29/09. When I power it up, a black screen comes on that shows "serial number not found" and it also says that my copy of Windows 7 Home Basic is not genuine – but my computer came with Windows 7 Home Premium. In BIOS, my serial number is not shown either and I did pull out the little battery to reset it which allowed me to bypass the suddenly new locked BIOS that needed a password to enter. I'm sure this is a masterpiece created by my 6 or 9 yr old child while trying to play on my laptop. Can I fix these two problems?

• Keep only "lock" a single app open in iOS?

  Is there anyway to "lock" open a single app in iOS? My use case for this is simple. There are many apps and games designed for children. While these applications are appropriate for children, many other applications installed on an iPad are not. But even more so than protecting them from inappropriate content, I would just like to prevent them from leaving the application. They accidentally hit the home button or multi-touch gesture out of the application. I know you can turn gestures off. Developers also have links to their website or other related applications. Kids are constantly exiting the application and then bringing the device to me asking "Can you get me back into the game?" every couple minutes. How can I hand a child an iPad with "Angry Birds" running and make sure only "Angry Birds" runs? Cydia or jailbreak tweaks welcome. Thanks.

  I am setting up a domain = mydomain.com with 2 nameservers ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com in Webmin - BIND. For this, I have registered 2 child nameservers at my domain registrar, and in Webmin-Bind I have set up a new zone for this domain. In this zone, i have specified 2 nameserver records- one each for ns1 and ns2. Also, I have defined 2 address records- one each for ns1.mydomain.com -> IP Address #1 and for ns2.mydomain.com -> IP Address #2 However when I try to start BIND in Webmin, I get the following error-- Failed to start BIND : Starting named: Error in named configuration: zone mydomain.com/IN: has no NS records zone mydomain.com/IN: not loaded due to errors. _default/mydomain.com/IN: bad zone [FAILED]

TL;DW (too lazy; didn't watch) The interviewee in the video suggests that when doing online banking, the user exit his browser (thus closing all windows) and start a new browser session with just your banking page/tab open. Allegedly, malicious sites can check if you have your banking site open and inject commands onto those sites. Can someone confirm and/or deny this claim? Is it only possible even if there is not parent/child relationship between windows/tabs?

• User's home drive permissions don't contain system or administrators on Windows Server 2008 R2

  I have a user whose home drive has only that user in the permissions. No administrators, etc. I have tried to take ownership as a local administrator however I cant seem to apply settings to the child objects -- it still gives me a permission denied error. I know there are some handy CLI utils that can redo permissions. Any ideas? Or even a way to do it through Windows? The file server is a 2008 R2 server.
