• Three disk (possibly RAID) data recovery

  I have on my desk three 160 GB disks that were once part of an HP Proliant Windows 2003 Server. They may have been part of a RAID configuration of some sort. They may or may not be damaged in some way. When I interface them via USB, one of them shows up as a drive, but unformatted. The others show up as uninitialized disks in manager. An alternative explanation is that the two drives were simply not unused. What's my first step? I've recovered data off damaged drives before but never had anything to do with RAID configs. How can I even tell if any type of RAID was used?

• HDDs randomly falling off raid

  I really need help on this it's Saturday long weekend.No customer service help:( .I recently build new server/light duty desktop.Main purpose is only file sharing.Raid configuration :Adaptec 6805 ,8x 3TB HDD WD Red,Intel RES2SV240 expander,Raid 6,set in Intel mobo DZ 77GA-70K.I upgraded firmwares, but I'm having strange problem. During Build Verify segment 7 got missing.I just reinsert drive into hot swap bay and it started to rebuild Array.After rebuild was done another segments 0 and 5 gone missing while build/verify.I reinserted drives and now I'm praying that raid is going to rebuild successfully from remaining 6 drives,because i already transfer some data on it(I know it was bad idea).I checked S.M.A.R.T on missing drives , it only says link failure and aborted commands on one of them.No Errors on HDDs.Connections and cables are good.I added 2 fans blowing on RAID controller because it was getting too hot, so I guess overheating shouldn't be issue.What can be possibly wrong? • Windows XP drives not opening

  I had a PC which operating system was Windows XP , I reinstalled the Windows , formatting just the C drive , and had my new version of XP installed there , but when it was installed and I tried to open the other drives (meaning for example D , E , .. ) I got this error : i9wjpqc.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close I trying googling it , and I ended up with knowing it's a malware, so my guess is that my previous OS had this malware on its other drives and the source was located in C , now that I've formatted C , other drives still have the malware, so they can't be opened :( and suggestion to get the drives to open ?

• How to stop windows 7 from asking to format a disk?

  Hey guys, I have this USB flash drive with a Linux partition that I use inside VirtualBox. Each time I insert it into the USB port, windows keeps asking if it should format it. Is there anyway to disable Windows from asking that? Thanks. EDIT: Disabling auto-run has not resolved the problem unfortunately. Windows will still check if the disk contains a partition it knows about, and ask to format if it doesn't know it. Really nice try though, any other ideas?

• Question about getting information off an old HD...

  Ok so my old cpu was a sony vaio. its kinda old and had xp on it. My gf thrashed it - the cd drive went and she tried fixing it by messing with the configurations bios etc. the actual laptop is really fried the keyboard doesnt work, etc. However the harddrive is still intact. I tried putting the HD in my new cpu (toshiba runnig win7) and it looks like its gonna boot up it goes to the screen with the logo and the status bar starts to load. then it flashes a blue screen for a split second, and goes to the black screen where it says windows did not shut down properly and gives options to (start windows normally, safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with prompts) ive tried every option but it always goes back to this screen. I need to get into the hd cuz i have very important files. is there anyway?

• Why is my computer running slower after I just installed more RAM and a new HDD?

  I just bought 4 GB of ram (2x2GB) and a 1TB hard drive and installed them, upgrading from my original 1GB RAM and 250GB HDD. I put the 2GB sticks in 1st and 3rd slots and the 1GB stick in 2nd. Now with my new ram and HDD my computer is running MUCH slower and I dont know why. I've tried restarting just to see what happens and I noticed that even the Windows XP starting music is lagging. If anyone could help that would be fantastic. It's hard even to type this out.

• Sync two external harddrives?

  A little mishap happened earlier today and i am thinking i should have a copy of my external harddrive since 10% of it is very valuable. What is the best solution to keep two external harddrive in sync? i'll probably use one as regular and maybe use the other only to copy data. The easiest way to keep it in sync is to clear one drive and copy the other but 1T of data will take a long time. Whats a good existing app that will keep them in sync? freeware preferred.

  I wanted to create a bootable usb from an iso image and i accidentally put as the output of the dd, instead of my usb drive, one of my hard disks. The iso was 3,3 GB and my disk is 1TB! And it was almost full. Can i at least restore the data that has not been overwritten? Right now i can't even mount it.   I have installed a new hard drive in our PC running Windows XP and I wonder how to transfer the data from the old (small) data partition to the new (large) one. My question concerns only a data partition containing files and folders (not the boot partition with the Operating System files!) Is it ok to just copy the folders in the Windows XP Explorer to the new partition? Could anything be lost this way (hidden folders, metadata, ..)? What is the best way to clone a data partition in Windows XP?

  The answers are unclear wherever I look. I have two 2TB drives for a RAID1 and I want to mirror them while having two partitions on the drives. One partition will be 100GB and contain programs, the other partition will be 1.8TB and contain personal files. Some may ask why? The answer is that my programs are currently on another older drive and I want to save time and pain uninstalling and re-installing critical programs while merely copying them to the new drives via Shadowcopy. When I create the RAID1, will both partitions be mirrored? Is this possible? I am sorry if I am being confusing or unclear.

• Windows boot manager and two hard disks

  here's my situation: I had an HDD with Windows 8 installed (UEFI mode). I bought a SSD and wanted to do a clean install of Windows, so I thought that disabling the HDD and leaving the SSD as the only drive when installing was the right procedure to install the boot manager on the SSD. Unfortunately, after I plugged the HDD back in, the computer won't boot unless I select from the BIOS directly the SSD as the boot device. I guess the problem is that I have two Windows Boot Managers on two separate drives and they conflict. How would I solve this problem (excluding a format of the HDD, because I need to access data on the old Windows partition and, ideally, I would like to be able to boot that partition)?

• RAID 0 disk failure, how to recover the RAID?

  Situation is this. A PC with 2 hard disks, in an RAID 0 Array. The electronics on one of the disks has failed. I can not find the same board for the disk (I've tried this, removed board from the OK disk, and the second, the damaged one, works fine). I've made an image with "dd" on linux on a new hard drive (same size, not same model) and now I get "Offline member" in the RAID config screen. Will I succeed to recover the data which is stored on the drives, any help, any experience with this kind of problem. And surly, I know it was stupid to put the disks in RAID 0 and store data on them :(

• Recover snap server data

  Hi I have a snap server 110 the machine powers on ok and the healthcheck passes but unable to connect no responce on the assigned ip or any ability to reach the device via the snap server manager. Believe the device is powering on but not loading the OS. Tried pulling the disk running and hooking up to a windows PC via USB, and using disk internals linux reader I am unable to access two of the partitions. ( one of which is the large data partition). There are three partitions on the the drice only one is accessible via Linux reader. I am looking to recover the data of the drive can anyone suggest a DIY option please?

  Help please! My backup method of choice is to clone my "working" drive to another identical drive. I have 2 windows drives and I clone my working one to the other one once per month. No problem - each will boot if I select it. Now with the lack of future support for XP, I am getting familiar with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. I have it on one drive and I have a second identical drive that I want to be able to clone it to once/month. Not as necessary to do this with Ubuntu as with windows, I know, but I'm anal. So I have followed #47209 MestreLion's procedure with just the two Ubuntu drives "on line". I.e., boot my "working" drive with Live CD, use Gparted to be sure I know what's what, open terminal and enter and execute the dd command, Go to bed till the clone is done, shut down the computer, disconnect the input/source drive, boot up using BIOS to select the remaining output drive. The drive starts fine but all is not OK. It puts up a screen that says I'm on a Guest Session and asks for a password. Well, for one thing I have my Ubuntu set up to start without a password being entered. I have one, of course, I put it in but it isn't accepted. I can't get by this Guest Session screen. I am fine, of course. I can disconnect this drive, hook up my "main" ubuntu drive and all the rest, and go on with my business. But I don't have the desired "emergency backup" drive working where I could jump on and use it immediately if I needed it. Can someone give me some guidance here?? What (else) do I need to do.   I've just looked at the health status of my old 2,5 inch 500 Gb Fujitsu drive with a popular "HD Tune" utility. It shows a warning for the "Reallocated Event Count" property. How serious is that? The thing is that the drive is practically new. I pulled it out of a new laptop over a year ago and never used it since. Right now it only has 53 "Power On" hours which sounds about right since I only had it running a few evenings overnight before switching it for something more performant. Does this warning indicate that the drive is likely to fail some time in the future? I'm somewhat perplexed since the drive is effectively unused. What is more, I have arranged with somebody to buy off this drive since I don't really need. It is 12,5 mm thick (with 3 plates) meaning it doesn't fit into an external enclosure which makes it quite useless to me. Can I give away the drive without having it on my conscience or better cancel the deal? In other words, can the drive be used safely for years to come or better throw it away? I'm running a sector test now to see if there are any real problems. Will post the results as soon as they're available.

• How to play VOB files that were inside a DVD disc?

  I just downloaded a DVD which is for a movie. After uncompressing the DVD file I see .VOB, .IFO and .BUP files. If I open the first .VOB file it shows me the DVD menu but I can't interact with it. So, my question is... is Totem able to play those kind of files? If so, how can I achieve that? What other app could I use in order to reproduce those files? Edit Using VLC didn't work neither. I forgot to mention I have already tried that. Let me rephrase: if I open the first video file it shows the DVD menu, BUT I can't interact with it.

• Help understanding my hard drive / partitioning situation... Pictures Included! :)

  So I have installed windows 7, and two different distros of linux... I have read and tried to understand things like "spanned" "extended" "primary" "swap" "dev/dev2/" "GRUB" "Windows Boot Loader/Manager" etc.... I have a very very limited understanding of all of it! :) I am trying to figure out how to get all OS boot options on one Boot manager (I'm thinking it will be GRUB), because at this point when i turn on my computer, I basically get two booting options (excluding the memtest options etc)... One options is to boot one of my Linux Distros and the second option is to boot my Windows 7. When i go with the first option, Linux boots up... when i go with the second Windows 7 option, I get the "windows boot manager screen" and I can choose Windows 7 or my other installation of Linux (Ubuntu)... In addition, I did not have swap partition from my first installation of Linux, I created it during the installation of my second distro... This is a lot of info for me, but I'm guessing that you linux Gurus, pretty much understand what is going on! Hope my question makes sense.. i will try and simplify... Can i get all 3 OS's optioned to boot from one GRUB? Can i get both Linux distros to use one swap file (I have seen this possible in other threads, but because of how my disk is partitioned, i dont know if i can do this) I hope that i dont have to start all over installing one after the other. Ive got some pics that may help understand my hard drive situation! • Looking for USB Network Attached Storage (NAS) Adapter that supports multiple drives, NTFS/FAT32 fil

  I'm looking for a NAS Adapter that supports attaching multiple USB devices to the network. Here's what I'd like to see in a NAS adapter: Under $100.00. Support for multiple devices. This can be through a USB hub or through multiple USB connectors on the device itself. Bittorrent support would be nice, but this isn't a deal-breaker. Filesystem support for at least NTFS or FAT32. I'd prefer to not have to reformat to use the device, but this is also not a deal-breaker. Here is what I am NOT looking for: I'm NOT looking for a NAS enclosure. I already have a couple of spare external USB drives that I'd like to use. I'm NOT looking for a networked USB hub like the one mentioned here. Network USB hubs only allow access to a drive from one PC at a time. I'm NOT looking for a wireless router with a NAS built in. I already have a wireless router, and I'd rather not go through the hassle of replacing it if possible. What I've looked at so far PogoPlug: This supports multiple devices via a USB hub, but there's not Bittorrent support. It's $99.00, so I may end up going with this and hope that they patch in Bittorrent support later. Addonics NAS Adapter: This supports only one device per adapter, so it's a non-starter. SimpleNET NAS Head USB 2.0 Portable Dongle: I'm not 100% sure this supports multiple devices. Plus there doesn't seem to be any Bittorrent support. I'll try to update this post as I explore other devices.

My initial suspicion was that the disk was dying. However, on further examination it appears that Ubuntu, which doesn't write to the volume frequently like Windows does, was able to read the disk properly and retrieve all the data intact, saving me from having to use an older backup. Finally, running the Seatools DOS diagnostic reported that the disk has no problems, ie. SMART errors and no bad sectors, apparently. This, in combination with the relative youth of the disk, suggests that something else is broken. The cable? The PSU? The integrated disk controller? But what would be a good way to diagnose the problem without risking damaging the data? I intend to extract the disk and try it in an external eSATA enclosure and see if the write errors cease, but in the event of the disk appearing to be fine, I would like to be able to confirm what part of the hardware is actually broken here in order to know just what needs replacing. Are there any good ways to go about this?

• Reinserted a RAID disk. Defined as foreign. Is import or clear the correct choice?

  I have re-inserted a RAID disk, on a DELL server with Windows Server 2008. The drive-status indicator was changing between a green and amber light, and the monitor gave the following message: There are offline or missing virtual drives with preserved cache. Please check the cables and ensure that all drives are present. Press any key to enter the configuration utility. I pressed a key and the PERC 6/I Integrated BIOS Configuration Utility showed that the RAID Status for that disk was Offline. After reinsertion of the disk the monitor is giving the following message: Foreign configuration(s) found on adapter. Press any key to continue or ‘C’ load the configuration utility, or press ‘F’ to import foreign configuration(s) and continue. After checking around on the net I am uncertain if I should choose import or clear. I cannot find out if an import means importing information from the array/system to the now foreign disk or the other way, i.e. importing information from the foreign disk to the array/system that was actually working fine. Also; if clear is a necessary thing to do ahead of a rebuild of that disk, or if clear means to clear the system to somehow make it ready to import the information from the foreign disk to the array/system, which is not what I want. I imagine that making the wrong choice here might be fatal. Please help clearing this out by telling what to choose and why.

• Where do I connect the HDD LED wires on my RAID adapter?

  I'm using a Promise FastTrak TX8660 with RAID 5. The manual (and Google) just doesn't seem to explain how exactly to connect a standard two-pin HDD LED wire to the eight available pins on the card. The Manual just says - To connect your LED, follow the following diagram: The card itself resembles the diagram: But it doesn't make any sense to me. All I have is a two-pin connecter for HDD LED on the front of my computer case. I don't need anything fancy like the fault LED or seperate indicators for each drive. I just want to be able to see when my RAID 5 array is working, that's all. I don't know what the "R" and "G" stand for, but my HDD LED wires are red and white. I tried connecting the red wire to the "R" pin and the white wire to the "G" pin, but that just makes the LED on the front of my case light up indefinitely, even when the computer is idle. Which pins am I suppose to connect the HDD LED header to for basic activity indication?

• Can not copy files from NTFS partition

  I am experiencing a weird problem. I was running Xubuntu on my laptop until yesterday that I had to delete Xubuntu and install Windows. I had a NTFS partition on my Xubuntu that I kept some files on it. Today after installing windows I wanted to move all the files from that partition to an external HDD. I selected all files and folders and clicked on Copy, then I went to the HDD and clicked on paste but nothing happened. I can not do that. I do not know why. I copy the files, and wherever I click paste, nothing happens. If I try to copy the files and folders one by one, I can copy some of them, but some of them do not move. The other problem I have is that I can not open some files, in particular pdf files. When I click on pdf files I get this error: There was an error opening this document. This file cannot be found. Also, I cannot play some mp4 files. I can not open some jpg and txt files. I get this error The directory name is invalid. So in summary, after removing Xubuntu and installing windows 7 I have the following problems with one of the NTFS partitions on my internal drive: Can not copy or cut all folders and files from that partition to any other partition - I also do not get any errors. Can copy some folders and files Can not access some pdf, jpeg, txt and mp4 files and get the above errors. I should also mention I did not change anything for this partition during the installation or formatting the other partitions.

• QNAP NAS 509 (LINUX) - how to unmout busy volume and find physical disk?

  On my NAS QNAP TS 509 I do have a technical issue. I need to run e2fsck. This works fine for me on md0 (see below), but how can I unmount the busy devices md9 and sda4 in order to do the same. Whenever I try, I fail because the device is busy. [This part is solved, see below] In order to further track down the issue, I'd need to sort out the physical disk to device relationship. How can I find out this, e.g. md0 is a stripped volume on 2 disk (but I need to find out on what physical disk). Remark: As you can easily derive from my questions, I am not a Linux expert, but manage to get along. /dev/ram0 124.0M 94.1M 29.8M 76% / tmpfs 32.0M 80.0k 31.9M 0% /tmp /dev/sda4 310.0M 103.9M 206.1M 34% /mnt/ext /dev/md9 509.5M 39.2M 470.2M 8% /mnt/HDA_ROOT /dev/md0 1.8T 1.4T 444.7G 76% /share/MD0_DATA tmpfs 32.0M 0 32.0M 0% /.eaccelerator.tmp -- Added -- QNAP seems to be based on Busybox. I do not find something like init / telinit / runlevel. At busybox docs it says that I need to run the below. But in /var/service sv is not available. I want to go to single user mode to unmount the devices. # cd /var/service # sv d * # sv u getty* -- Added, thanks A4L -- This QNAP Box runs a special flavor of Linux, so not all SOPs do apply. In my particular case I found a services.sh script, stopping all services. After that the drive could be unmounted. The information passed by A4L is valid and worth reading it, maybe I'll profit from it next time.
