Some URLs fail to load on Windows web portal

I’m working in a large data center and have been assigned to troubleshoot and issue with a windows (IIS) web server that acts as a portal for a customer of the data center. This portal server is on a DMZ at the local data center. I don’t have access to the portal desktop and am relying on an off-site administrator to work with me to do testing and report the condition of the portal. He tells me there are no software firewalls or other filtering configured. While most of the remote web pages work fine, several of the URSs the portal is suppose to serve up fail to load. I had wireshark installed on the portal system and had a capture taken of one of the failures. I used IE to access one of the remote web servers at issue. I could see the TCP SYN-ACK coming back from the remote server, but after several HTTP GETs fail to get a response the portal server sends a reset. The webmaster of the remote web server assures me that no sites are being blocked. I had a capture taken outside the local firewall, so there should be no issue there. Another tech set up a laptop and used the IP address of the portal (we took the portal off-line for the test). The laptop loads the URL as expected. I tried having Firefox loaded to make sure that the HTTP GET was not mal-formed. Same failure as with IE. So, it seems it is not the remote web server or the network, because there was no problem with the laptop. At this point, I’m not sure what other questions to ask or tests to do.

Disk Error on Boot (Possible boot sector issue)

I own a 4-5 year old Dell Dimension E510 with Windows XP: Media Center Edition. I have 2 drives installed: C Drive: Windows XP: Media Center Edition G Drive: 2 partitions: Windows 7 (beta) Windows XP (professional) That is also the order they are connected. The C Drive is my primary drive. When I attempt to boot the computer, the bios loading screen appears normally; the progress bar moves and it's fine. The very next page, however, supposed to be a boot choice. When I installed Windows 7 onto the G Drive in context of the C drive it added a boot selector to the C drive's boot sequence. It gives me the option of booting Windows 7 or Windows XP: Media Center Edition. However, my problem is now this: After the bios screen I previously mentioned, instead of a boot selector, I receive the following error: A disk read error occurred. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart. The drive is spinning up normally. I hear no odd noises/clicks/scraping coming from it, even after disabling the other drive to listen to it carefully. According to me, it's a boot sector issue. I have never experienced this before, but maybe during a recent shutdown, Windows XP: MCE errored out and ruined the boot sector. Dilemma! I don't have the Windows XP: MCE disc, because it was installed by the factory. I have accessed the hidden partition on the drive before (you hit a key combination on the bios screen and it comes up with an interface to fix your drive). However, I don't want to reformat the drive (which is what the interface gives me the option to do). I want to possibly fix the boot sector. How can I achieve that?

Canvas rotate from bottom center image angle?

Get current timepoint from Totem application

I want to find the exact time where a media file is currently paused at (or playing) in a running Totem instance using D-Bus. To be precise, what I want is available from the Totem python console (if the plugin exists and is enabled) by the following command: >>> print totem_object.props.current_time 732616 which I understand is milliseconds. So far: I've never used D-Bus before, so I'm in the process of going through D-Bus and python-dbus documentation. I've also fired up D-Feet and found that the org.gnome.Totem bus name and the /Factory object I can use the org.freedesktop.DBus.Properties interface methods. CSS / jQuery Vertically and Horizontally Center DIV

I'm trying to vertically and horizontally center this div even when there is content to scroll and the user is scrolling down the page. The following test works fine in IE, but in Firefox I get a weird flickering affect when hovering over the thumbnail image. Help me re-center a ModalPopup within an iframe when the iframe's parent window scrolls

I have a web page with an iframe in it (I don't like it, but that's the way it has to be). It's not a cross-domain iframe so there's nothing to worry about there. I have written a jQuery extension that does the centering of a ModalPopup (which is called from an overridden AjaxControlToolkit.ModalPopupBehavior._layout method) based on the width and height of the iframe's parent, so that it looks centered even though the iframe is not in the center of the page. It's a lot of tricky stuff, especially since the web page I added the iframe to runs in quirks mode. Now, I've also overridden AjaxControlToolkit.ModalPopupBehavior._attachPopup, so that when the parent window resizes or scrolls, the ModalPopup inside of the iframe recenter's itself relative to the new size of the parent window. However, the same code that attaches the popup to the parent window's resize event does NOT work for the parent window's scroll event. Cursor image to the center on mouseout

Hi all! I'm a real noobie with flash and I was wondering if somebody could help me with this one. I have this actionsript 3 code, where the cursor image "ball_mc" follows the mouse's position with a slight delay: stage.addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME,followBall); function followBall(event:Event):void { var dx:int = ball_mc.x - mouseX; var dy:int = ball_mc.y - mouseY; ball_mc.x -= dx / 5; ball_mc.y -= dy /5; } 1) How can I get the cursor image automatically return to the center of the stage on mouseout? As of now, it stays at the position where the mouse leaves the stage. 2) How can I reverse the movement of the mouse? So that when I, for example, move mouse to the right, the cursor image would move to the left? And when moving the mouse up, the image would go down. The stage is 800 x 250 pixels, in case that makes any difference.

Horizontally and Vertically Center Modal Div IE Issue

I'm trying to horizontally and vertically center a modal window inside a div. I want it to be cross browser compatible. You can see from the picture below that when I resize IE8 then click, "show modal" button it displays not exactly horizontally centered. This does not seem to be an issue with Chrome. Any thoughts? Center aligned form with equal width labels

I have a very simple web form which consists of labels and input fields, however I can not seem to find a way of aligning the form in the center of the page and for the labels to have an equal width so that they appear neatly next to each other, one under the other. Also I am not able to set the width of the page (or any containing divs) as the page will be displayed on mobile devices with different screen sizes. Any suggestions as to how best style the form? URGENT: Firefox circular-dependency hell - Linux Mint 13 (based on Ubuntu 12.04)

Having difficulty re-installing Firefox, after an installation to resolve places.sqlite issues. It appears that I'm trapped in circular dependency hell. Need to resolve firefox dependency hell to attempt to resolve Tomcat6 project dependencies (don't ask), ASAP. Have been trying for hours. JRockit R28/JRockit Mission Control 4.0 is out!

The next major release of JRockit is finally out! Here are some highlights: Includes the all new JRockit Flight Recorder – supersedes the old JRockit Runtime Analyser. The new flight recorder is inspired by the “black box” in airplanes. It uses a highly efficient recording engine and thread local buffers to capture data about the runtime and the application running in the JVM. It can be configured to always be on, so that whenever anything “interesting” happens, data can be dumped for some time back. Think of it as your own personal profiling time machine. Automatic shortest path calculation in Memleak – no longer any need for running around in circles when trying to find your way back to a thread root from an instance. Memleak can now show class loader related information and split graphs on a per class loader basis. More easily configured JMX agent – default port for both RMI Registry and RMI Server can be configured, and is by default the same, allowing easier configuration of firewalls. Up to 64 GB (was 4GB) compressed references. Per thread allocation profiling in the Management Console. Native Memory Tracking – it is now possible to track native memory allocations with very high resolution. The information can either be accessed using JRCMD, or the dedicated Native Memory Tracking experimental plug-in for the Management Console (alas only available for the upcoming 4.0.1 release). JRockit can now produce heap dumps in HPROF format. Cooperative suspension – JRockit is no longer using system signals for stopping threads, which could lead to hangs if signals were lost or blocked (for example bad NFS shares). Now threads check periodically to see if they are suspended. VPAT/Section 508 compliant JRMC – greatly improved keyboard navigation and screen reader support. Control Your Favorite Music Player from Firefox

Do you love listening to music while you browse? Now you can access and control your favorite music player directly from Firefox with the FoxyTunes extension. FoxyTunes in Action Once you have installed the extension and restarted Firefox you will see the FoxyTunes Toolbar located in the “Status Bar”. The default media app is Windows Media Player but can be easily changed. Here are the buttons/items available with the default settings: Search, FoxyTunes Main Menu, Show Player, Select Player, Previous Track, Play, Next Track, Mute On/Off, Volume, Play File, Twitty Tunes, Foxy Tunes Search/Explore, Open FoxyTunes Planet, & Toggle Visibility/Drag and drop to move. Note: You can hide or show individual buttons/items using the “FoxyTunes Menus”. Curious about the media players that FoxyTunes works with? Here is a complete listing…that definitely looks terrific! Notice that the currently selected media app is “bold and blue”. For our example we chose Spotify which we have previously covered. Keep in mind that you may or may not need to have your favorite media app open prior to “starting” FoxyTunes up (i.e. Play Button). Here is a good look at the “FoxyTunes Main Menu” and “Controls Sub-Menu”. The “Extras Menu”…if you click on skins you will be taken to the FoxyTunes Skins webpage. Here is a closer look into the “Configurations Menu” and one of the sub-menus. You do not need to look for options in the “Add-ons Manager Window”…everything you need is contained in these menus. If you do not like having FoxyTunes in the “Status Bar” you can easily drag and drop it to another toolbar. You can also condense the appearance of FoxyTunes using the small “triangle buttons” that are located in different spots throughout the “FoxyTunes Toolbar”. With just a click or two you can greatly reduce its’ impact on your UI. Conclusion If you love listening to music while browsing then the FoxyTunes extension will let you take care of everything right from your browser. Who should control navigation in an MVVM application?

Example #1: I have a view displayed in my MVVM application (let's use Silverlight for the purposes of the discussion) and I click on a button that should take me to a new page. Example #2: That same view has another button that, when clicked, should open up a details view in a child window (dialog). We know that there will be Command objects exposed by our ViewModel bound to the buttons with methods that respond to the user's click. But, what then? How do we complete the action? Even if we use a so-called NavigationService, what are we telling it? To be more specific, in a traditional View-first model (like URL-based navigation schemes such as on the web or the SL built-in navigation framework) the Command objects would have to know what View to display next. That seems to cross the line when it comes to the separation of concerns promoted by the pattern. On the other hand, if the button wasn't wired to a Command object and behaved like a hyperlink, the navigation rules could be defined in the markup. But do we want the Views to control application flow and isn't navigation just another type of business logic? (I can say yes in some cases and no in others.) To me, the utopian implementation of the MVVM pattern (and I've heard others profess this) would be to have the ViewModel wired in such a way that the application can run headless (i.e. no Views). This provides the most surface area for code-based testing and makes the Views a true skin on the application. And my ViewModel shouldn't care if it displayed in the main window, a floating panel or a child window, should it? According to this apprach, it is up to some other mechanism at runtime to 'bind' what View should be displayed for each ViewModel. But what if we want to share a View with multiple ViewModels or vice versa? So given the need to manage the View-ViewModel relationship so we know what to display when along with the need to navigate between views, including displaying child windows / dialogs, how do we truly accomplish this in the MVVM pattern?

I want be able to connect the shell to everything socat can handle (socks5, udp, openssl), but also to have a nice shell which correctly interprets all keys, various Ctrl+C/Ctrl+Z and jobs control. Update: Found "setsid" socat option. It fixes "no job control". Now trying to fix Ctrl+D.

how do you document your development process?

My current state is a mixture of spreadsheets, wikis, documents, and dated folders for my input/configuration and output files and bzr version control for code. I am relatively new to programming that requires this level of documentation, and I would like to find a better, more coherent approach. update (for clarity): My inputs are data used to generate configuration files with parameter values and my outputs are analyses of model predictions. I would really like to have an approach that allows me to associate particular configuration(s) with particular outputs, so that I can ask questions of my documentation such as "what causes over/under estimates?" or "what causes error 'X'"?

How should I manage "reverting" a branch done with bookmarks in mercurial?

I have an open source project on bitbucket. Recently, I've been working on an experimental branch which I (for whatever reason) didn't make an actual branch for. Instead what I did was use bookmarks. So I made two bookmarks at the same revision test --the new code I worked on that should now be abandoned(due to an experiment failure) main -- the stable old code that works I worked in test. I also pushed from test to my server, which ended up switching the tip tag to the new unstable code, when I really would've rather it stayed at main. I "switched" back to the main bookmark by doing a hg update main and then committing an insignificant change. So, I pushed this with hg push -f and now my source control is "correct" on the server. I know that there should be a cleaner way to "switch" branches. What should I do in the future for this kind of operation?

Bitbucket and a small development house

I am in the process of finally rolling Mercurial as our version control system at work. This is a huge deal for everyone as, shockingly, they have never used a VCS. After months of putting the bug in management's ears, they finally saw the light and now realise how much better it is than working with a network of shared folders! In the process of rolling this out, I am thinking of different strategies to manage our stuff and I am leaning towards using Bitbucket as our "central" repository. The projects in Bitbucket will solely be private projects and everyone will push and pull from there. I am open to different suggestions, but has anyone got a similar setup? If so, what caveats have you encountered?

In the last case the conversion will not be detected as a move operation, so as far as I can tell it'll be difficult to trace the file history across the commit. Although I'd instinctively prefer the last solution, I can't help thinking that tracing history should be given very high priority in version control. What is the best thing to do here?

How to ensure apache2 reads htaccess for custom expiry?

I have a site with Apache 2.2.22 . I have enabled the mod-expires and mod-headers modules seemingly correctly: $ apachectl -t -D DUMP_MODULES … expires_module (shared) headers_module (shared) … Settings include: ExpiresActive On ExpiresDefault "access plus 10 minutes" ExpiresByType application/xml "access plus 1 minute" Checking the headers of requests, I see that max-age is set correctly both for the generic case and for xml files (which are auto-generated, but mostly static). I would like to have different expiries for xml files in a directory (e.g. /data), so http://site/data/sample.xml expires 24 hours later. I enter the following in data/.htaccess: ExpiresByType application/xml "access plus 24 hours" Header set Cache-control "max-age=86400, public" but it seems that apache ignores this. How can I ensure apache2 uses the .htaccess directives? I can provide further information if requested.

How to discriminate commented code and documentation comments

After using version control tools, it is no longer necessary to comment out old code. However, some team members still comment out old code. Therefore, I want to clean them up. I want to mark commented lines which are really comments / documentation, so that every time I do not need to re-read all commented regions. The unmarked lines left are new commented code. How do I achieve this? Any existing tools or need to write on my own? Similar concept: in git, we have 'partial commit' to select some lines to commit. However, the lines marked in 'partial commit' is valid once only.

Would you make your website's source code public?

Back story: My best friend is a self-taught coder for a community art site, written in PHP. Some time ago he mentioned he wanted to make the source code of the site public, to which my response was total horror - surely it was going to be full of security holes waiting to be found, and it was going to lead to hacking and errors on a huge scale. He never ended up doing it. Current story: I'm starting development of a community website built in Rails, and for ease of use I was going to use Github for version control. Then I realized it was pretty much exactly the same thing as my friend making his source code public - which made me stop and think. Would you make your website's completely-custom source code public? Or is this a case of open source gone too far? (note: I don't think this applies to people who run things like Wordpress. Or does it?)

Execute code at specific intervals, only once?

I am having an issue with XNA, where I want to execute some code in my Update method, but only at a given interval, and only once. I would like to avoid booleans to check if I've already called it once, if possible. My code is here: if ((gameTime.TotalGameTime.TotalMilliseconds % 500) == 0) { Caret.Visible = !Caret.Visible; } As you may have guessed, it's for a TextBox control, to animate the caret between invisible and visible states. I just have reason to believe that it is called twice or maybe even 3 times in a single update-call, which is bad, and makes it look unstable and jumpy.

Is reference to bug/issue in commit message considered good practice?

I'm working on a project where we have the source control set up to automatically write notes in the bug tracker. We simply write the bug issue ID in the commit message and the commit message is added as a note to the bug tracker. I can see only a few downsides for this practice. If sometime in the future the source code gets separated from the bug tracking software (or the reported bugs/issues are somehow lost). Or when someone is looking in the history of commits but doesn't have access to our bug tracker. My question is if having a bug/issue reference in the commit message is considered good practice? Are there some other downsides?

Why does Clang/LLVM warn me about using default in a switch statement where all enumerated cases are covered?

Consider the following enum and switch statement: typedef enum { MaskValueUno, MaskValueDos } testingMask; void myFunction(testingMask theMask) { switch theMask { case MaskValueUno: {}// deal with it case MaskValueDos: {}// deal with it default: {} //deal with an unexpected or uninitialized value } }; I'm an Objective-C programmer, but I've written this in pure C for a wider audience. Clang/LLVM 4.1 with -Weverything warns me at the default line: Default label in switch which covers all enumeration values Now, I can sort of see why this is there: in a perfect world, the only values entering in the argument theMask would be in the enum, so no default is necessary. But what if some hack comes along and throws an uninitialized int into my beautiful function? My function will be provided as a drop in library, and I have no control over what could go in there. Using default is a very neat way of handling this. Why do the LLVM gods deem this behaviour unworthy of their infernal device? Should I be preceding this by an if statement to check the argument?
