  • Executing Windows administrative shell commands on Windows using Python

    I have a batch script using Windows shell commands to perform several administrative actions. The script is running great on Windows 7 but when i try launching it from Python 2.6 nothing happens: import os a = os.popen("somebatchfile.bat") I assume that this is because the bat file uses several commands that require an administrative privileges but i don't want to prompt to a password using runas.exe or embedding the password within the code. Is there any way to make UAC prompt for user approval or something?

  • Wiimote accelerometer input on Windows? (in 2013 - Glovepie alternative?)

    There were a few options for getting accelerometer input into Windows using a Nintendo Wiimote. As of mid 2013, these projects seem to be dead, corrupted with malware, or both. Are there any tools out there that can do this that are still available (and not full of malware)? Quick roundup of the options that used to exist, or that still exist but aren't suitable: Glovepie, which used to be the most recommended option, appears to be dead: it's own website hacked, its creator's googlepages page full of strange stuff that sounds like hacker-humour about the end of the world... (I'd rather not link to them, very dubious stuff...), and lots of forum threads asking if it's a dead project with comments along the lines of "I heard that the author intends to return to it" dated 2011... Wiiuse seems to be dead: its sourceforge page simply says "Error.", its own website has turned into a squatter page. There apparently was an extension for Autohotkey that allowed Wiimote input, but I've seen warnings that this too is now full of malware (see final commentin above link) Everything else I can find about using Wiimotes as input on Windows - for example, Johnny Lee Cheng's work - seems to be exclusively about using infrared or sensor bar, or tied to a specific purpose (e.g. FPS gaming). My main interest is in the accelerometer, and buttons if possible (although something that supports the IR stuff too would be ideal). Is there anything that works for getting Wiimote accelerometer input into Windows that is reliable and not a malware-fest? If anyone's interested in "Why?", it's to use the Wiimote as an audio / midi controller: to use movement, pitch, roll etc to modulate lots of different sound variables at once with one hand. Wiimotes are great for this, and Glovepie used to be the standard way to make this work (e.g. see for example this tutorial, and this one, ignore the unrelated video; I've also seen musicians using wiimote/glovepie setups at gigs, creating some really unique sounds). As of 2013, however, Glovepie seems to be a dead and thoroughly hacked project, sadly. Is there anything else? With or without MotionPlus is fine (with would be better).   • Does Windows 7 allow advanced skinning like Windows XP?

    The Windows 7 Aero interface looks great, but after looking at it for months it gets boring. So I was wondering - is it possible to create advanced skins for Windows 7 that use full Aero capabilities but are redesigned from ground up, including common controls, animations, effects, etc? Windows XP allowed that, although only with a patched uxtheme.dll. Or do you have to implement a custom shell for that?

  • Saving blog items as pdf's

    I know of FireShot, a firefox extension, for saving up whole pages of images. And I love it. Great idea, and a very good implementation. But unfortunatelly, often on this kind of sites, you have links which get lost that way. So I'm wondering, is there a way to save in the same manner whole blog posts, wiki posts, StackOverflow posts :), as PDF files, so the links get saved as well ?

    I am looking for lightweight MS SQL Server Managmenet Studio (2005) alternative (open source/freeware is a bonus). Something more like HeidiSQL for MySQL. LINQPad is not an option (although it's great for learning Linq). It can only query database (and has many cons for my needs). I am looking for management/alteration functionality also, not only making queries and viewing the results.

  • How do I make Mail.app quit after iCal sends an alert?

    iCal uses a built in script file to email reminders through Mail.app. It works great, but I don't use Mail.app for my main email account, just for sending calendar notifications. So, Mail.app opens and sends the alert, but then it stays open. I've tried to edit the applescript file to make it quit Mail, but that doesn't seem to work. Can anyone offer some advice? Thanks :-)

I've noticed my server (lamp set up) being slow at times, but by the time I log in as root and run a PS command, everything may have returned to normal. It would be great to review a log of what resources different parts of the server consumed.

    I need an alternative to Visio for making diagrams (particularly signal processing block diagrams) that includes some kind of custom stencils + connection points. I just spent 2 hrs learning bits and pieces of Dia only to find that it has no rotational capabilities, not even 90 degree rotations. Otherwise it's great. Any suggestions?

  • Custom Windows hotkey to refresh browser window

    I work in a double screen environment where I write code on one screen and preview the results in the other (containing Firefox, Chrome etc.). It would be great if I could somehow make the browser window refresh without manually switching to the browser. So while I write code, I would like to push, for example, Ctrl+Alt+R and the browser window would refresh without any extra effort on my side. Is there any software that could help me to set up such custom hotkey?

  • Mounting an FTP as a virtual disk (FTPDrive analogue)

    FTPDrive has been a great utility for me, but it does not support 64bit Windows 7. The feature of FTPDrive that is useful for me is accesing files from an FTP as local files without pre-downloading so that I can preview and watch movies from a local FTP server without waiting for a full movie to get downloaded first. Do you know of any software which allows accessing files over FTP without pre-downloading? Thanks!

    my new seagate sata drive keeps showing as a 249gb drive but in the setup part when i press del at the boot up it states there a 3000gb drive and i have searched for a solution but havent found one yet. I havent tried in a different pc yet and I have an asus gaming board with 2 video cards sli'ed and i have windows 7 ultimate 64 bit with 8gb ram and a hp 23" widescreen monitor and the sniper gaming case and a salitek lighted up gaming keyboard and a razor death adder gaming mouse and a corsair 850 watt power supply.     Hello, currently I have dual boot with 2 windows 7. (dont ask why, long story, I need them for each with different settings involving Audio Recording) I am very keen to install the new Ubuntu and get into a new OS, out of interest but I don't want to mess with my current 2 windows installations? If I install Ubuntu, will this simply add to my list of OS boot options when you set it, like I did when I install my 2nd Windows 7 Any comments or help would be great? Thanks Bill

    Hi, I'm trying to determine how to set up dual NICs on my Server 2008 box (not R2). I want all web traffic on one NIC and all Hyper-V traffic on the other. Is this possible?     Hi, I've done a far bit of research on this via Google and there seems to be quite a few ways of possibly doing this. I'm looking to incrementally backup new and updated files in two directories on my Plesk run Centos 5.2 server: /backups and /var/www/vhosts (preferable only httdocs within each vhost) Has anyone got some great feedback from using the various solutions - seems to be various Java, Perl and Ruby based solutions out there.   • automated emails from php using google apps?

    I've got google apps setup, with the mx records working. Any emails to [email protected] now go to my google apps, great. Now i want to use google apps for sending automated emails (ie lost password, registration) How do i set it up so that php's mail() using googleapps? is this correct? also, is there anyway for test (sending myself multiple emails) without google thinking im spamming?
